Abstract

Many studies have explored alternative assessment practices that focus on students and their learning. In this paper, we present a survey study that analyses lecturers' perceptions of their assessment practices. Special attention is paid to assessment tasks developed to monitor student learning and those designed to promote active student participation in the assessment process. Lecturers' perceptions of the importance, perceived competence and implementation of such assessment tasks are considered throughout the paper. Responses showed that lecturers assigned importance to the monitoring of student learning and felt reasonably capable of implementing assessment tasks for that purpose. Much less importance was placed on student participation in such assessments; lecturers perceived their abilities to implement assessment tasks to promote student participation to be poor and they rarely used such tasks.

Estos se suelen manejar de manera conservadora, sin embargo, se pueden asociar a distintas etiologías las cuales los hacen recurrir. En este reporte presentamos dos casos de neumoencéfalo tardío post quirúrgico asociado a fístulas de LCR de bajo flujo, donde se discute su clínica, etiología y manejo posterior.

Abstract

Resumen El neumoencéfalo corresponde a la presencia de aire intracraneal y, en general, es asintomático y autolimitado. Puede ocurrir posterior a trauma, cirugía craneofacial, defectos congénitos, infección, neoplasia o de forma espontánea. El neumoencéfalo a tensión es una emergencia neuroquirúrgica, en la que se acumula aire intracraneal de forma continua que genera un efecto de masa. Clínicamente, se caracteriza por cefalea y un deterioro neurológico marcado. A pesar de ser poco frecuente, es relevante considerar el neumoencéfalo a tensión como una posible complicación en pacientes con antecedente de neurocirugía y/o cirugía otorrinolaringológica, debido a que es una patología potencialmente grave. El diagnóstico es clínico e imagenológico, y requiere de un alto índice de sospecha. Un manejo oportuno es relevante para prevenir la herniación y la muerte.

212. Tumor inflamatorio de Pott en escolar de 7 años: a propósito de un caso

Abstract

Resumen El tumor inflamatorio de Pott (PPT) es una osteomielitis del hueso frontal con un absceso subperióstico concomitante, principalmente secundario a sinusitis frontal complicada. Es infrecuente, pero puede tener consecuencias fatales debido a su alta asociación con complicaciones intracraneales. Presentamos el caso de una escolar de 7 años sin antecedentes, que consulta en el Servicio de Urgencia por un cuadro de 5 semanas de rinorrea mucopurulenta derecha y aumento de volumen frontal progresivo, habiendo recibido antibioticoterapia sin respuesta. Se realizan neuroimágenes que confirman el diagnóstico de rinosinusitis aguda fronto-etmoidal complicada con absceso subperióstico frontal compatible con PPT, asociado a un absceso epidural. Se manejó con antibiótico endovenoso prolongado y aseo quirúrgico mediante craniectomía por abordaje bi-coronal con drenaje de ambas colecciones y reconstrucción de base de cráneo con colgajo de pericráneo, evolucionando favorablemente. El diagnóstico del tumor inflamatorio de Pott es clínico y radiológico, siendo el aumento de volumen frontal el signo cardinal. La tomografía computarizada es útil para establecer el diagnóstico diferencial con otras entidades y la resonancia magnética permite con mayor sensibilidad y especificidad detectar complicaciones intracraneales. El tratamiento es médico y quirúrgico mediante antibioticoterapia endovenosa y aseo quirúrgico oportuno.

213. Déjà vu: on the use of meat resources by sabretooth cats, hominins, and hyaenas in the Early Pleistocene site of Fuente Nueva 3 (Guadix-Baza Depression, SE Spain)

Abstract

The late Early Pleistocene archaeological site of Fuente Nueva 3 (Orce, Guadix-Baza Depression, SE Spain), dated to ~1.4 Ma, provides evidence on the subsistence strategies of the first hominin population that dispersed in Western Europe. The site preserves Oldowan tool assemblages associated with abundant remains of large mammals. A small proportion of these remains show cut marks and percussion marks resulting from defleshing and bone fracturing, and a small proportion of bones also show tooth marks. Previous taphonomic studies of FN3 suggested that the hominins had secondary access to the prey leftovers abandoned by sabretooth cats and other primary predators. However, a recent analysis by Yravedra et al. (2021) of the frequency of anthropogenic marks and tooth marks has concluded that the hominins had primary access to the carcasses of a wide variety of ungulate prey, even though the frequency of evisceration marks is strikingly low. In this rebuttal, we analyse the patterns of bone preservation in FN3, which show that the exploitation of bone marrow by the hominins after hammerstone breakage was a usual activity at the site. Our study also reviews the evidence available on the lesser abilities of sabretooth cats for carcass processing compared to pantherine felids. This reinforces the hypothesis that primary predators provided the hominins the opportunity to scavenge sizeable chunks of meat and bone marrow of their prey carcasses before the arrival of hyaenas. Finally, we also provide new inferences on resource availability and competition intensity among the members of the carnivore guild in FN3, which reinforce our interpretation that a secondary access by the Oldowan hominins to the prey leftovers of sabretooth cats was an optimal foraging strategy in the Guadix

Abstract

Additive Manufacturing techniques represent a revolution for the design of certain engineering components traditionally subject to a design highly influenced by the manufacturing process linked to the manufacture of the component. Additive Manufacturing techniques therefore allow components with different internal and external structures to be manufactured. Thus, components formed by an internal microstructure are of special interest due to their high strength-to-weight and high stiffness-to-weight properties. This work investigates the hybrid fabrication of curved thin-walled Inconel 718 with internal microstructural supports fabricated by laser powder bed fusion (LPBF). The outer walls are made up of solid surfaces with a fixed curvature and thickness, while the internal structure of the pieces is made up of internal microstructures that vary at different angles of inclination. Finally, the outer surfaces of the piece have been milled. Eventually, the dimensional quality of the components and their internal microstructure has been analysed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This experimental mathematical work aims to analyse the results obtained from the heat transfer of a typical automotive disc brake and thus compare the behaviour of heat dissipation of this mechanical element under different operating conditions. The results demonstrate that the disc brakes can be used effectively in severe operational conditions with a speed of 36 km/h and an ambient temperature of 25°C, without affecting the safety of the occupants or the braking system. The use of semi-metallic pads increases the temperature over the wear track superficial temperature by around 20% more than the asbestos pad, but the material removal during sliding is around ~2.5 times more for the asbestos pad due to the coupling in the tribosystem (pad and disc brake). The heat dissipation in the disc brakes depends on the geometry of the disc, the material from which it is manufactured, the material of the pad, the weight of the vehicle, and the operating conditions, as it could be verified with the mathematical and experimental results, thus validating the contribution of the effectiveness of the braking process during its real operation.
