This study explored the electrocortical correlates of conscious and nonconscious perceptions of emotionally laden faces in neurotypical adult women with varying levels of autistic-like traits (Autism Spectrum Quotient-AQ). Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded during the viewing of backward-masked images for happy, neutral, and sad faces presented either below (16 ms-subliminal) or above the level of visual conscious awareness (167 ms-supraliminal). Sad compared to happy faces elicited larger frontal-central N1, N2, and occipital P3 waves. We observed larger N1 amplitudes to sad faces than to happy and neutral faces in High-AQ (but not Low-AQ) scorers. Additionally, High-AQ scorers had a relatively larger P3 at the occipital region to sad faces. Regardless of the AQ score, subliminal perceived emotional faces elicited shorter N1, N2, and P3 latencies than supraliminal faces. Happy and sad faces had shorter N170 latency in the supraliminal than subliminal condition. High-AQ participants had a longer N1 latency over the occipital region than Low-AQ ones. In Low-AQ individuals (but not in High-AQ ones), emotional recognition with female faces produced a longer N170 latency than with male faces. N4 latency was shorter to female faces than male faces. These findings are discussed in view of their clinical implications and extension to autism.

Besides the prominent motor syndrome, some patients affected by amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) complain of many non-motor symptoms during the disease course, in particular chronic pain that significantly reduces the patients' quality of life. Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a rare painful condition, rarely described in ALS patients. We present the clinical case of a patient affected by spinal-onset ALS, who developed a type I CRPS (CRPS-I) at the upper limbs. To the best of our knowledge, only five cases of ALS-CRPS-I have been reported and they share some peculiar features: ALS spinal-onset with classic phenotype, rapid deterioration of quality of life, and a poor prognosis. Different mechanisms have been supposed in the pathogenesis of both CRPS and ALS, resulting in distinctive clinical presentations. Altered plasticity of brain sensory and motor areas might represent a common feature that seems to influence negatively ALS progression and prognosis.

The main pathological feature of the neurodegenerative diseases is represented by neuronal death that represents the final step of a cascade of adverse/hostile events. Early in the neurodegenerative process, glial cells (including astrocytes, microglial cells, and oligodendrocytes) activate and trigger an insidious neuroinflammatory reaction, metabolic decay, blood brain barrier dysfunction and energy impairment, boosting neuronal death. How these mechanisms might induce selective neuronal death in specific brain areas are far from being elucidated. The last two decades of neurobiological studies have provided evidence of the main role of glial cells in most of the processes of the central nervous system, from development to synaptogenesis, neuronal homeostasis and integration into, highly specific neuro-glial networks. In this mini-review, we moved from in vitro and in vivo models of neurodegeneration to analyze the putative role of glial cells in the early mechanisms of neurodegeneration. We report changes of transcriptional, genetic, morphological, and metabolic activity in astrocytes and microglial cells in specific brain areas before neuronal degeneration, providing evidence in experimental models of neurodegenerative disorders, including Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases. Carbon nanostructures (CN) are emerging valuable materials for the assembly of highly engineered multifunctional nanovehicles for cancer therapy, in particular for counteracting the insurgence of multi-drug resistance (MDR). In this regard, carbon nanotubes (CNT), graphene oxide (GO), and fullerenes (F) have been proposed as promising materials due to their superior physical, chemical, and biological features. The possibility to easily modify their surface, conferring tailored properties, allows different CN derivatives to be synthesized. Although many studies have explored this topic, a comprehensive review evaluating the beneficial use of functionalized CNT vs G or F is still missing. Within this paper, the most relevant examples of CN-based nanosystems proposed for MDR reversal are reviewed, taking into consideration the functionalization routes, as well as the biological mechanisms involved and the possible toxicity concerns. The main aim is to understand which functional CN represents the most promising strategy to be further investigated for overcoming MDR in cancer.

Background and Objectives: Laparoscopy is the preferred method when operating in the abdomen. In this study, we evaluated systemic and morphological peritoneal cytokine modifications (RANTES/CCL5 and MCP-1/CCL2) due to CO 2 pneumoperitoneum in rats., Methods: Twenty-five prepubertal Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized into three groups. Pneumoperitoneum lasting 30 minutes, was induced with a flow of 0.5 L/min, in two groups (S1 and S2, n = 20), at a P/CO 2 of 6 and 10 mm Hg, respectively. In the control group (C, n = 5), only anesthesia was carried out. All animals were sacrificed after 24 hours. The serum of the rats was collected for ELISA, and the levels of the cytokines RANTES and MCP-1 were investigated. An immunohistochemical analysis of RANTES and MCP-1 was performed on samples of the peritoneum, and the morphological evaluation was conducted with a blinded evaluation by two independent, experienced pathologists by using a grading system (0, 1+, 2+, 3+: no, faint, moderate, and strong reactivity, respectively)., Results: RANTES mean levels were significantly different in the S1, S2, and C groups (70.3 ± 2.26, 58.23 ± 4.32, 29.66 ± 4.03, respectively, P = .0001). The levels of MCP-1 were 32.1 ± 1.63 in the S1 group, 27.0 ± 9.26 in the S2 group, and 16.4 ± 9.55 in the C group ( P = .159). We first investigated in obese children the protective role of the hydroxysteroid 17-beta dehydrogenase 13 (HSD17B13) rs72613567:TA variant in liver damage. Six hundred eighty-five obese children were genotyped for HSD17B13, patatin-like phospholipase domain containing 3 (PNPLA3), transmembrane 6 superfamily member 2 (TM6SF2), and membrane bound O-acyltransferase domain containing 7 (MBOAT7) polymorphisms and underwent anthropometrical, ultrasonographic, and biochemical evaluation. Indirect measurement of liver fibrosis (Pediatric NAFLD Fibrosis Index [PNFI]) was calculated. The population was clustered in 2 genetic risk groups based on the numbers of steatogenic alleles (low: carriers up to 3 risk alleles, high: 4-6 risk alleles). Carriers of the HSD17B13 rare A allele showed lower percentage of hepatic steatosis and both lower serum transaminase and PNFI levels than noncarriers, even after adjustments for confounders. These findings were also confirmed in both risk groups. We demonstrated the protective effect of the rs72613567:TA HSD17B13 variant in reducing liver damage in obese children regardless of genetic predisposition.

Purpose: Solid tumors exhibit an altered redox state in comparison with normal tissues due to tumor hypoxia, lower pH, and elevated levels of the tripeptide glutathione. This study describes the preparation of functional redox-responsive nanoparticles proposed as delivery vehicle of Doxorubicin in adrenocortical cancer in vitro., Methods: Curcumin and Lipoic acid were conjugated to Human Serum Albumin and nanoparticle systems were prepared via a modified desolvation method. Scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transmission IR, dynamic light scattering and differential scanning calorimetry analyses were used to characterize the nanoparticles. Balb3T3 and H295R were used as in vitro models of health and cancer cells, respectively., Results: Nanoparticles with a spherical shape and a mean diameter of 70 nm were observed, increasing up to ten-folds upon exposure to glutathione 10 mM. Redox responsive Doxorubicin release was recorded, with loaded nanoparticles significantly enhancing the drug cytotoxicity against H295R adrenocortical tumor cells. Cell uptake experiments revealed a rapid and efficient internalization of the nanoparticles., Conclusions: A valuable tools to actively improve the in vitro anticancer activity of Doxorubicin against adrenocortical cancer was proposed. The effectiveness of the delivery vehicle is related to the presence of both Lipoic acid and Curcumin moieties, enhancing the glutathione responsivity, and the drug cytotoxicity, respectively.

Self-assembling prodrug containing pH- and redox-responsive functional groups was prepared by covalent conjugation of Doxorubicin (Dox) and lipoic acid (LA) to a polyaldehyde Dextran (PAD). The resultant amphiphilic DoxPADLA forms, in a single step, hemocompatible vesicular systems able to respond to intracellular signals without using external crosslinking agents. Camptothecin (CPT) was encapsulated exploiting the hydrophobic interactions with the vesicle membrane, and release experiments, carried out in media mimicking the physiological and endolysosomial compartments, in the absence or presence of Glutathione, proved the ability of the system to modulate drug release in relation to the variation of pH and redox potential. Cytotoxicity assays and confocal experiments demonstrated the efficacy of the vesicle formulation in enhancing the synergistic anticancer effect of the delivered Dox and CPT and a rapid and significant internalization of the carrier in cancer cells., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. With the aim to effectively deliver methotrexate (MTX) to breast cancer cells, we designed a nanocarrier system (DC) derived from the self-assembly of a dextran-curcumin conjugate prepared via enzyme chemistry with immobilized laccase acting as a solid biocatalyst. Nanoparticles consisted of homogeneously dispersed nanospheres with a mean diameter of 290 nm, as characterized by combined transmission electron microscopy and dynamic light scattering investigations. DC was able to control the MTX release overtime (t 1/2 value of 310 min), with cell internalization studies proving its presence inside MCF-7 cytoplasm. Finally, improved MTX efficacy was obtained in viability assays, and attributed to the synergy of curcumin moieties and loaded MTX as underlined by a combination index (CI) < 1.

Introduction: Despite the well-described clinical efficacy of long-term subcutaneous immunoglobulin (LT-SCIg) in chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP) patients, the neurophysiological effects of SCIg have been followed only for a short time and were not correlated with clinical parameters., Methods: Fourteen CIDP patients were evaluated at baseline and after LT-SCIg administration for 24 to 48 months. Nerve conduction studies were performed and clinical features were assessed for: (a) overall strength, by Medical Research Council sum score; (b) sensory function, by Inflammatory Neuropathy Cause And Treatment score; (c) disability, by Rasch-built overall disability scale; (d) quality of life (QoL), by the EuroQol Visual Analog Scale., Results: LT-SCIg treatment improved clinical and neurophysiological features, preserving strength and improving sensory deficits, disability, and QoL. Background: PNPLA3 I148M polymorphism has an effect on modulation of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in nonobese nondiabetic adults and in children with histologically confirmed nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)., Objectives: The objective of the study is to explore the impact of PNPLA3 I148M polymorphism on eGFR in children with obesity with and without NAFLD., Methods: We genotyped 591 patients with obesity for PNPLA3 I148M polymorphism. Anthropometrical, biochemical, and instrumental data were collected. NAFLD was defined by the presence of ultrasound-detected liver steatosis and/or ALT levels greater than 40 IU/L., Results: Patients with NAFLD showed significantly lower eGFR levels compared with subjects without NAFLD. Children with PNPLA3 MM genotype showed lower eGFR levels compared with those with either PNPLA3 IM or II genotypes both in the presence and absence of NAFLD. A general linear model for eGFR variance, including gender, duration of obesity, PNPLA3 genotypes, HOMA, BMI-SDS, LDL-C, and triglycerides as covariates, confirmed an inverse association between eGFR and PNPLA3 genotype only in the presence of NAFLD., Conclusions: Children with obesity and PNPLA3 MM genotype show lower eGFR levels compared with other genotypes, with a major effect of this polymorphism in the presence of NAFLD., (© 2019 World Obesity Federation.)

The interest in injectable hydrogels for cancer treatment has been significantly growing over the last decade, due to the availability of a wide range of starting polymer structures with tailored features and high chemical versatility. Many research groups are working on the development of highly engineered injectable delivery vehicle systems suitable for combined chemo-and radio-therapy, as well as thermal and photo-thermal ablation, with the aim of finding out effective solutions to overcome the current obstacles of conventional therapeutic protocols. Within this work, we have reviewed and discussed the most recent injectable hydrogel systems, focusing on the structure and properties of the starting polymers, which are mainly classified into natural or synthetic sources. Moreover, mapping the research landscape of the fabrication strategies, the main outcome of each system is discussed in light of possible clinical applications.

A hybrid system composed of multi-walled carbon nanotubes coated with chitosan was proposed as a pH-responsive carrier for the vectorization of methotrexate to lung cancer. The effective coating of the carbon nanostructure by chitosan, quantified (20% by weight) by thermogravimetric analysis, was assessed by combined scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (N1 s signal), respectively. Furthermore, Raman spectroscopy was used to characterize the interaction between polysaccharide and carbon counterparts. Methotrexate was physically loaded onto the nanohybrid and the release profiles showed a pH-responsive behavior with higher and faster release in acidic (pH 5.0) vs. neutral (pH 7.4) environments. Empty nanoparticles were found to be highly biocompatible in either healthy (MRC-5) or cancerous (H1299) cells, with the nanocarrier being effective in reducing the drug toxicity on MRC-5 while enhancing the anticancer activity on H1299.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) represents the most common cause of chronic liver disease in childhood. To date, the "multiple-hit" hypothesis is largely recognized as an explanation of NAFLD pathogenesis and progression. Obesity and features of the metabolic syndrome have been closely linked to NAFLD development. Due to the increased prevalence of obesity worldwide, NAFLD has reached epidemic proportions over time. Given its unfavorable cardiometabolic burden (such as cardiovascular and metabolic consequences), it represents a worrying phenomenon needing a more comprehensive and successful management. Laboratory tests and classical imaging techniques play a pivotal role in NAFLD diagnosis, but novel noninvasive alternative methods to diagnose and monitor NAFLD have been investigated. Currently, lifestyle modifications remain the mainstay treatment, although its efficacy is poor because of the lack of compliance. Pediatric research is focusing on multiple alternative treatments targeting the main pathogenic factors such as insulin-resistance, dyslipidemia, gut-liver axis and microbiota, oxidative stress, and proinflammatory pathways. Results from these studies are promising but larger validation is needed. Innovative therapeutic approaches might add an important piece in the complex knowledge of pediatric NAFLD. Phenoxodiol, an isoflavene anti-tumor agent, was conjugated on the polysaccharide dextran using immobilized laccase as biocatalyst. The success of the enzymatic conjugation was determined by UV-vis spectrophotometry and its functionalization degree was assessed by 1 H NMR and was found to be 3.25 mg phenoxodiol/g of conjugate. An accelerated stability test showed that the resultant conjugate was nine times more stable than the free phenoxodiol when tested for its residual anti-oxidant activity with the Folin-Ciocalteu assay. The in vitro anti-proliferative activity of the conjugate was evaluated against neuroblastoma SKN-BE(2)C, triple-negative breast cancer MDA-MB-231, and glioblastoma U87 cancer cells. The conjugate was shown to be generally more potent than phenoxodiol against all three cell types tested. Additionally, the cytotoxicity and anti-angiogenic activity of the conjugate were also evaluated against non-malignant human lung fibroblast MRC-5 and human microvascular endothelial cells HMEC-1, respectively. The conjugate was found to be 1.5 times less toxic than phenoxodiol while mostly retaining 62% of its anti-angiogenic activity in the conjugate form. This study provides further evidence that the conjugation of natural product-derived drugs onto polysaccharide molecules such as dextran can lead to better stability and enhanced biological activity of the conjugate compared to the free drug alone.

The development of hybrid materials, which combine inorganic with organic materials, is receiving increasing attention by researchers. As a consequence of carbon nanostructures high chemical versatility, they exhibit enormous potential for new highly engineered multifunctional nanotherapeutic agents for cancer therapy. Whereas many groups are working on drug delivery systems for chemotherapy, the use of carbon nanohybrids for radiotherapy is rarely applied. Thus, nanotechnology offers a wide range of solutions to overcome the current obstacles of conventional chemo- and/or radiotherapies. Within this review, the structure and properties of carbon nanostructures (carbon nanotubes, nanographene oxide) functionalized preferentially with different types of polymers (synthetic, natural) are discussed. In short, synthesis approaches, toxicity investigations and anticancer efficacy of different carbon nanohybrids are described.

Selective vectorization of Cisplatin (CisPt) to Glioblastoma U87 cells was exploited by the fabrication of a hybrid nanocarrier composed of magnetic γ-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles and nanographene oxide (NGO). The magnetic component, obtained by annealing magnetite Fe 3 O 4 and characterized by XRD measurements, was combined with NGO sheets prepared via a modified Hummer's method. The morphological and thermogravimetric analysis proved the effective binding of γ-Fe 2 O 3 nanoparticles onto NGO layers. The magnetization measured under magnetic fields up to 7 Tesla at room temperature revealed superparamagnetic-like behavior with a maximum value of M S = 15 emu/g and coercivity H C ≈ 0 Oe within experimental error. The nanohybrid was found to possess high affinity towards CisPt, and a rather slow fractional release profile of 80% after 250 h. Negligible toxicity was observed for empty nanoparticles, while the retainment of CisPt anticancer activity upon loading into the carrier was observed, together with the possibility to spatially control the drug delivery at a target site.

The recognition that neurogenesis does not stop with adolescence has spun off research towards the reduction of brain disorders by enhancing brain regeneration. Adult neurogenesis is one of the tougher problems of developmental biology as it requires the generation of complex intracellular and pericellular anatomies, amidst the danger of neuroinflammation. We here review how a multitude of regulatory pathways optimized for early neurogenesis has to be revamped into a new choreography of time dependencies. Distinct pathways need to be regulated, ranging from neural growth factor induced differentiation to mitochondrial bioenergetics, reactive oxygen metabolism, and apoptosis. Requiring much Gibbs energy consumption, brain depends on aerobic energy metabolism, hence on mitochondrial activity. Mitochondrial fission and fusion, movement and perhaps even mitoptosis, thereby come into play. All these network processes are interlinked and involve a plethora of molecules. Organ shortage and increasing donor age in liver transplant are stimulating transplant centers to accept otherwise discarded grafts due to donor age or vascular abnormalities; nevertheless, the use of nonagenarian donor grafts is uncommon because advanced age is associated with a higher risk of ischemic-type biliary lesions and worse long-term graft survival. We herein report the case of a 90-year-old donor with fully replaced right hepatic artery. After back-table vascular assessment, the donor right hepatic artery was anastomosed end-to-end with the gastroduodenal artery with 2 polypropylene 8/0 running sutures. Even if the back-table reconstruction of a replaced right hepatic artery is not associated with an enhanced risk of posttransplant vascular complications, vascular abnormalities might discourage the use of otherwise acceptable elderly grafts. The present case underscores that elderly liver grafts should not be discarded per se even in the presence of vascular variants.

Selective neuronal death in neurodegenerative disorders represents the final step of a cascade of events, including neuroinflammation, regional-specific reactive gliosis, changes of brain-blood barrier structure and functions, metabolic failure and mitochondrial energy impairment. Bilateral striatal necrosis is usually reported in inherited mitochondrial disorders, suggesting a pathogenetic role of the energy impairment by mitochondrial dysfunction. We investigated mechanisms of the selective striatal degeneration, comparing clinical findings of a patient with an acquired bilateral striatal necrosis and experimental data of a selective basal ganglia degenerative model in rats. In a 70-year-old patient affected by severe parkinsonian syndrome triggered by persistent metabolic acidosis, brain MRI revealed bilateral cystic-lacunar necrosis of basal ganglia. Immunohistochemistry of rat brain sections after single intraperitoneal administration (60 mg/kg) of the mitochondrial toxin 3-nitropropionic acid (3-NP) revealed (i) selective bilateral striatal necrotic/cavitary lesions, (ii) degeneration of striatal medium spiny neurons, (iii) evidence of synaptic and transcriptional dysfunction, and (iv) reactive gliosis (activated microglia and astrocytes) in the striatum. Our data provide an intriguing hypothesis for the selective neuronal degeneration in the striatum, claiming that selective mitochondrial energy impairment associated to loco-regional neuroinflammation and reactive gliosis might contribute to synaptic dysfunction and excitotoxicity that ultimately lead to neuronal degeneration.

Bruton's tyrosine-kinase (BTK) is a non-receptor tyrosine kinase recently associated with glioma tumorigenesis and a novel prognostic marker for poor survival in patients with glioma. The p65BTK is a novel BTK isoform involved in different pathways of drug resistance of solid tumors, thus we aimed to investigate the expression and the putative role of p65BTK in tumors of the central nervous system (CNS). We selected a large cohort of patients with glial tumors ( n = 71) and analyzed the expression of p65BTK in different histotypes and correlation with clinical parameters. Sections were stained with glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), p53, epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR), S100, vimentin, and epithelial membrane antigen (EMA) antibodies. Glioma stem cell (GSC) lines, isolated from glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), were treated with different concentrations of ibrutinib, a specific inhibitor of BTK, in order to evaluate their metabolic activity, mitotic index and mortality. Moreover, an orthotopic xenotransplant of GSC from human GBM was used to evaluate the expression of p65BTK in the brain of immunodeficient mice. p65BTK was expressed in GSC and in gemistocytes in human gliomas at different histological grade. We found a significant correlation between BTK expression and low-grade (LG) tumors ( p ≤ 0.05) and overall survival (OS) of patients with grade III gliomas ( p ≤ 0.05), suggestive of worst prognosis. Interestingly, the expression of p65BTK remained restricted exclusively to gemistocytic cells in the xenograft mouse model. Ibrutinib administration significantly reduced metabolic activity and mitotic index and increased mortality in GSC, highlighting the specific role of p65BTK in cell proliferation and survival. In conclusion, our data demonstrated that p65BTK is expressed in glioma tumors, restricted to gemistocytic cells, has a key role in GSC and has a bad prognostic value, thus highlighting the importance of future research for targeted therapy of human gliomas.

With the aim to obtain a site-specific doxorubicin (DOX) delivery in neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells, we designed an hybrid nanocarrier combining graphene oxide (GO) and magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (MNPs), acting as core elements, and a curcumin⁻human serum albumin conjugate as functional coating. The nanohybrid, synthesized by redox reaction between the MNPs@GO system and albumin bioconjugate, consisted of MNPs@GO nanosheets homogeneously coated by the bioconjugate as verified by SEM investigations. Drug release experiments showed a pH-responsive behavior with higher release amounts in acidic (45% at pH 5.0) vs. neutral (28% at pH 7.4) environments. Cell internalization studies proved the presence of nanohybrid inside SH-SY5Y cytoplasm. The improved efficacy obtained in viability assays is given by the synergy of functional coating and MNPs constituting the nanohybrids: while curcumin moieties were able to keep low DOX cytotoxicity levels (at concentrations of 0.44⁻0.88 µM), the presence of MNPs allowed remote actuation on the nanohybrid by a magnetic field, increasing the dose delivered at the target site.

Given the strong clinical evidence that copper levels are significantly elevated in a wide spectrum of tumors, copper homeostasis is considered as an emerging target for anticancer drug design. Monitoring copper levels in vivo is therefore of paramount importance when assessing the efficacy of copper-targeting drugs. Herein, we investigated the activity of the copper-targeting compound Dextran-Catechin by developing a [ 64 Cu]CuCl 2 PET imaging protocol to monitor its effect on copper homeostasis in tumors. Methods: Protein expression of copper transporter 1 (CTR1) in tissue microarrays representing 90 neuroblastoma patient tumors was assessed by immunohistochemistry. Western blotting analysis was used to study the effect of Dextran-Catechin on the expression of CTR1 in neuroblastoma cell lines and in tumors. A preclinical human neuroblastoma xenograft model was used to study anticancer activity of Dextran-Catechin in vivo and its effect on tumor copper homeostasis. PET imaging with [ 64 Cu]CuCl 2 was performed in such preclinical neuroblastoma model to monitor alteration of copper levels in tumors during treatment. Results: CTR1 protein was found to be highly expressed in patient neuroblastoma tumors by immunohistochemistry. Treatment of neuroblastoma cell lines with Dextran-Catechin resulted in decreased levels of glutathione and in downregulation of CTR1 expression, which caused a significant decrease of intracellular copper. No changes in CTR1 expression was observed in normal human astrocytes after Dextran-Catechin treatment. In vivo studies and PET imaging analysis using the neuroblastoma preclinical model revealed elevated [ 64 Cu]CuCl 2 retention in the tumor mass. Following treatment with Dextran-Catechin, there was a significant reduction in radioactive uptake, as well as reduced tumor growth. Ex vivo analysis of tumors collected from Dextran-Catechin treated mice confirmed the reduced levels of CTR1. Interestingly, copper levels in blood were not affected by treatment, demonstrating potential tumor specificity of Dextran-Catechin activity. Conclusion: Dextran-Catechin mediates its activity by lowering CTR1 and intracellular copper levels in tumors. This finding further reveals a potential therapeutic strategy for targeting copper-dependent cancers and presents a novel PET imaging method to assess patient response to copper-targeting anticancer treatments., Competing Interests: Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interest exists.

Objectives: Existing studies usually do not measure the free vitamin D in pediatric patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and not consider the effect of inflammation on vitamin D levels. The aim of our study was to evaluate the concentrations of vitamin D-binding protein (VDBP), total and free 25-hydroxyvitamin-D (25(OH)D), and to correlate these values with the disease activity markers., Methods: Newly diagnosed children with IBD and a group of healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled. VDBP and total and free 25(OH)D levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and compared using the Student t test. In each patient with IBD, the activity scores of disease and the main inflammation markers were correlated to total and free 25(OH)D levels. C-reactive protein was also measured in the control group, and it was related to VDBP by a linear regression test for all the groups., Results: Fifty-one consecutive children were enrolled: IBD = 33, HC = 18. Levels of total 25(OH)D were higher in HC than in patients with IBD (P = 0.01). The free/total 25(OH)D ratio was, however, higher in patients with IBD compared to HC (P < 0.001). Finally, levels of VDBP were lower in patients with IBD than in HC (P = 0.001). A significant direct correlation was found between the free/total 25(OH)D ratio and the activity index of disease (r: 0.17; P = 0.01). Moreover, in patients with IBD and controls we found a significant indirect correlation between VDBP and C-reactive protein (r: 0.12; P = 0.01)., Conclusions: Inflammation inversely correlates to VDBP concentrations and patients with IBD, despite their deficiency in total 25(OH)D, have normal or even higher levels of free 25(OH)D.

PNPLA3 and MTP genes have been associated with liver steatosis and chronic hepatitis C. We studied the influence of MTP and PNPLA3 polymorphisms in 114 Italian patients with chronic hepatitis C, evaluating the histological and clinical presentation of liver disease. The study confirmed the association of PNPLA3 polymorphisms with liver steatosis (p=0.041), but did not show any additive effect of MTP polymorphisms in the development of steatosis. MTP polymorphisms do not seem to influence PNPLA3 in the development of liver steatosis. Further studies with a larger number of patients are required.

Objective: To report the clinical features and the neurophysiological approach of a patient with Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS), highlighting the diagnostic role of the stimulated single fiber electromyography (sSFEMG)., Case Report: A 60-year-old woman presenting with the LEMS triad (proximal and axial weakness, autonomic dysfunction and areflexia) was evaluated by neurophysiological tests (electroneuromyography, repetitive stimulation test (TSR), voluntary and stimulated SFEMG). We reported: 1 ) increase of compound muscle action potential (CMAP) amplitude (>60%) following brief isometric exercise compared to the rest (baseline); 2 ) decremental/incremental response of CMAP amplitude at low- (3 Hz) and high-frequency (30 Hz) repetitive stimulation test (RST), respectively; 3 ) increased neuromuscular jitter and blocking at voluntary single-fiber electromyography (vSFEMG); 4 ) stimulation rate-dependent reduction of the neuromuscular jitter and blocking at sSFEMG. Diagnosis was confirmed by serological demonstration of circulating voltage gated calcium channels (VGCC) antibodies., Significance: The present case highlights the role of the sSFEMG in the diagnosis of LEMS, underling the stimulation rate-dependency of both neuromuscular jitter and blocks.

A free radical polymerization method was adopted for the fabrication of hybrid hydrogel films based on acrylamide and polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate as plasticizing and crosslinking agents, respectively, to be employed as smart skin bandages. Electro-sensitivity, biocompatibility and proteolytic properties were conferred to the final polymer networks by introducing graphene oxide (0.5% w/w), gelatin or trypsin (10% w/w) in the polymerization feed. The physical chemical and mechanical characterization of hybrid materials was performed by means of determination of protein content, Raman spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis and measurement of tensile strength. The evaluation of both water affinity and curcumin release profiles (analyzed by suitable mathematical modelling) upon application of an external electric stimulation in the 0-48 voltage range, confirmed the possibility to modulate the release kinetics. Proper proteolytic tests showed that the trypsin enzymatic activity was retained by 80% upon immobilization. Moreover, for all samples, we observed a viability higher than 94% in normal human fibroblast cells (MRC-5), while a reduction of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus CFU mL -1 (90%) was obtained with curcumin loaded samples., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. pH-responsive polymersomes were obtained by self-assembling of a carboxyl-terminated PEG amphiphile achieved via esterification of PEG diacid with PEG40stearate. The obtained vesicular systems had spherical shape and a mean diameter of 70 nm. The pH sensitivity was assessed by measuring the variations of particles mean diameter after incubation in media mimicking the physiological (pH 7.4) or tumor (pH 5.0) conditions, recording a significant increase of the vesicles dimensions at acidic pH. The ability of the polymersomes to carry both hydrophobic and hydrophilic drugs was evaluated by loading the vesicles with curcumin and methotrexate, respectively, obtaining high encapsulation efficiencies and pH-dependent release profiles. The drug-loaded polymeric vesicles exhibited improved cytotoxic potential against MCF-7 cancer cell line and were found to be highly hemocompatible. Finally, cellular uptake experiments on MCF-7 cancer cells were conducted to demonstrate the ability of the designed polymersomes to enhance drug penetration inside the cells., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. Background: The rs641738 polymorphism in the membrane-bound O-acyltransferase domain containing protein 7 (MBOAT7) gene has been associated with increased risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)., Objectives: To investigate the association between the MBOAT7 rs641738 polymorphism and both hepatic steatosis and biochemical markers of liver damage and to evaluate the potential additive effect of this variant and the I148M patatin-like phospholipase domain-containing 3 (PNPLA3) and the rs58542926 transmembrane 6 superfamily member 2 (TM6SF2) polymorphisms., Methods: One thousand and 2 obese children were genotyped for MBOAT7, PNPLA3, and TM6SF2 polymorphisms and underwent anthropometrical, ultrasonographic, and biochemical evaluation. Indirect measurement of liver fibrosis (Pediatric NAFLD Fibrosis Index [PNFI]) and a genetic risk score from these polymorphisms were calculated., Results: Carriers of the MBOAT7 T allele showed both higher alanine transaminase (ALT) (P = 0.004) and PNFI values (P = 0.04) than noncarriers. These findings were confirmed also for the carriers of the MBOAT7 T allele polymorphism with hepatic steatosis compared with noncarriers. A higher genetic risk score was associated with higher ALT (P = 0.011) and with an odds ratio (OR) to show elevated ALT of 3.4 (95% CI 1.3-5.5, P = 0.003). Patients belonging to genetic risk score 3 group had an OR to present steatosis of 2.6 (95% CI 1.43-4.83, P = 0.0018) compared with those belonging to lower genetic risk score group., Conclusions: We first demonstrated in childhood obesity the role of the MBOAT7 rs641738 variant on serum ALT and the combined effect of the MBOAT7, PNPLA3, and TM6SF2 variants on NAFLD risk. We also provided the first pediatric association of the MBOAT7 polymorphism with indirect markers of liver fibrosis.

Objective: The World Health Organization, the United Nations Children's Fund, and the International Council for the Control of Iodine Deficiency Disorders recommend a median urinary iodine concentration (UIC) in pregnant women between 150 µg/L and 249 µg/L. In the present study, we evaluated whether in the urban area of Cassino (central Italy), after a national salt iodination program (30 mg/kg) was introduced in 2005, the increased demand of iodine during pregnancy was satisfied., Methods: Between January 2016 and April 2017, 99 pregnant women were enrolled to evaluate UIC in spot urine samples, serum level of thyrotropin, free thyroxine, antithyroglobulin and antithyroperoxidase autoantibodies, and thyroid volume by ultrasonography. Eighty clinically healthy non-pregnant women were evaluated as controls., Results: The median UIC was of 97.7 µg/L and 110.3 µg/L, respectively, in control and pregnant women. A significant increase (P < 0.001) of median thyroid volume was found in pregnant women, relative to control women, being, respectively, 10.4 mL (range 3.68-19.49 mL) and 7.16 mL (range 2.57-14.00 mL). A positive correlation was found between thyroid volume and anthropometric parameters, and an inverse correlation was identified between free thyroxine serum levels and anthropometric parameters., Conclusions: This observational study found that the majority of pregnant women and their fetuses appear not to be protected from the detrimental consequences of iodine deficiency. Objective: To assess the long-term effects of subcutaneous immunoglobulin (SCIg) on neurophysiological and clinical parameters in patients affected by chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyradiculoneuropathy (CIDP)., Methods: 16 drug-naïve CIDP patients, fulfilling the clinical and neurophysiological criteria for typical CIDP, were treated with one cycle of intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIg) (0.4 g/kg/day for 5 consecutive days) and then shifted to the subcutaneous treatment (SCIg) (0.4 g/kg/week) after 4 weeks. Patients were evaluated (i) at the diagnosis (t 0 ), (ii) after 4 weeks since the last IVIg infusion (t 1 ), and (iii) after long-term treatment with SCIg (t 2  = 12 months; t 3  = 24 months) by (1) neurophysiological parameters of nerve conduction studies and (2) clinical assessment scales for evaluation of (a) strength, by medical research council (MRC) sum score, (b) sensory functions, by inflammatory neuropathy care and treatment (INCAT) sensory sum score and (c) disability, by overall disability sum score (ODSS)., Results: Long-term SCIg treatment induced a significant improvement of neurophysiological parameters, in particular primary demyelinating features of nerve conduction, and clinical variables. Correlation analysis showed (1) a direct positive correlation between the MRC sum score and the amplitude of the distal compound muscle action potential (dCMAP) amplitude, (2) an inverse correlation between dCMAP amplitude and ODSS score, and (3) an inverse correlation between sensory nerve action potential (SNAP) amplitude and the INCAT sensory sum score., Conclusions: Our findings revealed a significant long-term effect of the SCIg treatment on the neurophysiological parameters, associated with improvement of global strength, sensory deficits and overall disability in patients with CIDP., Significance: Early start of the SCIg treatment after IVIg infusions induced a significant and long-term improvement of clinical and neurophysiological parameters in CIDP patients., (Copyright © 2018 International Federation of Clinical Neurophysiology. Purpose: Recently, mutations of makorin RING-finger protein 3 (MKRN3) have been described in familial central precocious puberty. Serum levels of this protein decline before the pubertal onset in healthy girls and boys. The aim of the study is to investigate MKRN3 circulating levels in patients with central precocious puberty., Methods: We performed an observational cross-sectional study. We enrolled 17 patients with central precocious puberty aged 7 years (range: 2-8 years) and breast development onset <8 years; 17 prepubertal control age-matched patients aged 6.3 years (2-8.2); and 10 pubertal stage-matched control patients aged 11.4 years (9-14). Serum values of MKRN3, gonadotropins, (17)estradiol and Anti-Müllerian Hormone were evaluated and the MKRN3 genotyped in central precocious puberty patients., Results: No MKRN3 mutation was found among central precocious puberty patients. MKRN3 levels were lower in patients with central precocious puberty compared to prepubertal age-matched ones (p: 0.0004) and comparable to those matched for pubertal stage. MKRN3 levels were inversely correlated to Body Mass Index Standard Deviations (r:-0.35; p:0.02), Luteinizing Hormone (r:-0.35; p:0.03), FSH (r:-0.37; p:0.02), and (17)estradiol (r: -0.36; p:0.02)., Conclusions: We showed that girls with central precocious puberty had lower peripheral levels of MKRN3 compared to age-matched pairs and that they negatively correlated to gonadotropins, estrogen, and BMI. Our findings support the MKRN3 involvement in central precocious puberty also in absence of deleterious mutations, although our sample size is small. In addition our data suggest the role of MKRN3 in the complex mechanism controlling puberty onset and its interaction with other factors affecting puberty such as nutrition.

Hybrid nanocarrier consisting in nanographene oxide coated by a dextran-catechin conjugate was proposed in the efforts to find more efficient Neuroblastoma treatment with Doxorubicin chemotherapy. The dextran-catechin conjugate was prepared by immobilized laccase catalysis and its peculiar reducing ability exploited for the synthesis of the hybrid carrier. Raman spectra and DSC thermograms were recorded to check the physicochemical properties of the nanohybrid, while DLS measurements, SEM, TEM, and AFM microscopy allowed the determination of its morphological and dimensional features. A pH dependent Doxorubicin release was observed, with 30 and 75% doxorubicin released at pH 7.4 and 5.0, respectively. Viability assays on parental BE(2)C and resistant BE(2)C/ADR cell lines proved that the high anticancer activity of dextran-catechin conjugate (IC 50 19.9 ± 0.6 and 18.4 ± 0.7 µg mL -1 ) was retained upon formation of the nanohybrids (IC 50 24.8 ± 0.7 and 22.9 ± 1 µg mL -1 ). Combination therapy showed a synergistic activity between doxorubicin and either bioconjugate or nanocarrier on BE(2)C. More interestingly, on BE(2)C/ADR we recorded both the reversion of doxorubicin resistance mechanism as a consequence of decreased P-gp expression (Western Blot analysis) and a synergistic effect on cell viability, confirming the proposed nanohybrid as a very promising starting point for further research in neuroblastoma treatment., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. Serum levels of this protein decline before the pubertal onset in healthy girls and boys and are lower in patients with CPP compared to prepubertal matched pairs. The aim of our study was to investigate longitudinal changes in circulating MKRN3 levels in patients with CPP before and during GnRH analogs (GnRHa) treatment., Methods: We performed a longitudinal prospective study. We enrolled 15 patients with CPP aged 7.2 years (range: 2-8) with age at breast development onset < 8 years and 12 control girls matched for the time from puberty onset (mean age 11.8 ± 1.2 years). Serum values of MKRN3, gonadotropins, and 17β-estradiol were evaluated before and during treatment with GnRHa (at 6 and 12 months). The MKRN3 gene was genotyped in CPP patients. In the girls from the control group, only basal levels were analyzed., Results: No MKRN3 mutations were found among CPP patients. MKRN3 levels declined significantly from baseline to 6 months of GnRHa treatment (p = 0.0007) and from 6 to 12 months of treatment (p = 0.003); MKRN3 levels at 6 months were significantly lower than in the control girls (p < 0.0001)., Conclusions: We showed that girls with CPP had a decline in peripheral levels of MKRN3 during GnRHa treatment. Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) has long been considered a well-defined, recognizable monogenic disorder, with neurofibromas constituting a pathognomonic sign. This dogma has been challenged by recent descriptions of patients with enlarged nerves or paraspinal tumors, suggesting that neurogenic tumors and hypertrophic neuropathy may be a complication of Noonan syndrome with multiple lentigines (NSML) or RASopathy phenotype. We describe a 15-year-old boy, whose mother previously received clinical diagnosis of NF1 due to presence of bilateral cervical and lumbar spinal lesions resembling plexiform neurofibromas and features suggestive of NS. NF1 molecular analysis was negative in the mother. The boy presented with Noonan features, multiple lentigines and pectus excavatum. Next-generation sequencing analysis of all RASopathy genes identified p.Ser548Arg missense mutation in SOS1 in the boy, confirmed in his mother. Brain and spinal magnetic resonance imaging scans were negative in the boy. No heart involvement or deafness was observed in proband or mother. This is the first report of a SOS1 mutation associated with hypertrophic neuropathy resembling plexiform neurofibromas, a rare complication in Noonan phenotypes with mutations in RASopathy genes. Our results highlight the overlap between RASopathies, suggesting that NF1 diagnostic criteria need rethinking. The mammalian hippocampus is particularly vulnerable to chronic stress. Adult neurogenesis in the dentate gyrus is suppressed by chronic stress and by administration of glucocorticoid hormones. Post-natal and adult neurogenesis are present in the avian hippocampal formation as well, but much less is known about its sensitivity to chronic stressors. In this study, we investigate this question in a commercial bird model: the broiler breeder chicken. Commercial broiler breeders are food restricted during development to manipulate their growth curve and to avoid negative health outcomes, including obesity and poor reproductive performance. Beyond knowing that these chickens are healthier than fully-fed birds and that they have a high motivation to eat, little is known about how food restriction impacts the animals' physiology. Chickens were kept on a commercial food-restricted diet during the first 12 weeks of life, or released from this restriction by feeding them ad libitum from weeks 7-12 of life. To test the hypothesis that chronic food restriction decreases the production of new neurons (neurogenesis) in the hippocampal formation, the cell proliferation marker bromodeoxyuridine was injected one week prior to tissue collection. Corticosterone levels in blood plasma were elevated during food restriction, even though molecular markers of hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activation did not differ between the treatments. The density of new hippocampal neurons was significantly reduced in the food-restricted condition, as compared to chickens fed ad libitum, similar to findings in rats at a similar developmental stage. Food restriction did not affect hippocampal volume or the total number of neurons. These findings indicate that in birds, like in mammals, reduction in hippocampal neurogenesis is associated with chronically elevated corticosterone levels, and therefore potentially with chronic stress in general. This finding is consistent with the hypothesis that the response to stressors in the avian hippocampal formation is homologous to that of the mammalian hippocampus.

Nanotechnology can offer different solutions for enhancing the therapeutic efficiency of polyphenols, a class of natural products widely explored for a potential applicability for the treatment of different diseases including cancer. While possessing interesting anticancer properties, polyphenols suffer from low stability and unfavorable pharmacokinetics, and thus suitable carriers are required when planning a therapeutic protocol. In the present review, an overview of the different strategies based on polymeric materials is presented, with the aim to highlight the strengths and the weaknesses of each approach and offer a platform of ideas for researchers working in the field.

Background: Bisphenol A (BPA) exposure has been associated with increased incidence of diabetes and obesity in adults., Objectives: To evaluate whether an association between BPA urinary levels and insulin resistance as well as adiponectin and resistin production and serum concentrations may occur in obese children., Methods: Clinical and biochemical features of 141 obese children were collected. Serum resistin and adiponectin were evaluated. Insulin resistance and urinary BPA levels were assessed. Moreover, the effect of BPA on adiponectin and resistin gene expression in adipocytes from eight normal weight prepubertal children was investigated by quantitative real-time RT-PCR (qPCR)., Results: Direct association between BPA and homeostasis model assessment (r = 0.23; p: 0.0069) and a strong inverse association between BPA and adiponectin have been found (r = -0.48; p < 0.0001). In adipocytes, resistin expression was detected only after BPA treatment, while adiponectin expression resulted down-regulated after BPA exposure (p < 0.05 at both 10 and 100 nM BPA concentrations)., Conclusions: We suggest the involvement of BPA in the development of insulin resistance in childhood obesity highlighting that urinary BPA levels are directly associated with insulin resistance regardless of BMI. Background: The N-acetyltransferase 2 ( NAT2 ) A803G polymorphism has been associated with decreased insulin sensitivity in a large adult population with the A allele associated with insulin-resistance-related traits., Objective: Evaluate the association of this polymorphism with anthropometric and metabolic parameters in obese children and adolescents., Subjects: A total of 748 obese children and adolescents were enrolled., Methods: Anthropometric and laboratory data were collected. During oral glucose tolerance test, the presence of a possible exaggerated plasma glucose excursion at 1 h (1HPG) or impaired glucose tolerance (IGT) was considered. Homeostasis model assessment, oral disposition index (oDI) and insulinogenic index (IDI) were calculated. Patients were genotyped for the NAT2 A803G polymorphism., Results: The prevalence of both IGT and elevated-1HPG was higher in children carrying the A803 allele (P = .02 and P = .03). Moreover, this allele was associated with both oDI and IGI reduction (P = .01). No differences among the NAT2 A803G genotypes for the other parameters were shown. Children homozygous for the A allele presented an odds ratio (OR), to show IGT of 4.9 (P = .01). Children both homozygous and heterozygous for the A allele had higher risk to show elevated-1HPG (OR of 2.7, P = .005; and OR = 2.3, P = .005) compared with patients homozygous for the NAT2 803G allele., Conclusions: NAT2 A803 allele seems to play a role in worsening the destiny of obese children carrying it, predisposing them to elevated-1HPG and IGT and then to a possible future type 2 diabetes mellitus throughout an impairment of pancreatic β-cellular insulin secretion as suggested by oDI and IGI reduction., (© 2016 John Wiley & Sons A/S. Formation of blood vessels, or angiogenesis, is crucial to cancer progression. Thus, inhibiting angiogenesis can limit the growth and spread of tumors. The natural polyphenol catechin has moderate anti-tumor activity and interacts with copper, which is essential for angiogenesis. Catechin is easily metabolized in the body and this limits its clinical application. We have recently shown that conjugation of catechin with dextran (Dextran-Catechin) improves its serum stability, and exhibits potent anti-tumor activity against neuroblastoma by targeting copper homeostasis. Herein, we investigated the antiangiogenic activity of Dextran-Catechin and its mechanism. We found that Dextran-Catechin displayed potent antiangiogenic activity in vitro and in vivo. We demonstrated Dextran-Catechin generates reactive oxygen species which in turns disrupts copper homeostasis by depleting the copper importer CTR-1 and copper trafficking ATOX-1 protein. Mechanistically, we showed that disrupting copper homeostasis by knockdown of either CTR-1 or ATOX-1 protein can inhibit angiogenesis in endothelial cells. This data strongly suggests the Dextran-Catechin potent antiangiogenic activity is mediated by disrupting copper homeostasis. Thus, compounds such as Dextran-Catechin that affects both tumor growth and angiogenesis could lead the way for development of new drugs against high copper levels tumors.

pH/redox dual-responsive nanogels (DEX-SS) were prepared by precipitation polymerization of methacrylated dextran (DEXMA), 2-aminoethylmethacrylate (AEMA) and N,N'-bis(acryloyl)cystamine (BAC), and then loaded with methotrexate (MTX). Nanogels were spherical and exhibited homogeneous size distribution (460nm, PDI<0.30) as observed using dynamic light scattering (DLS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). DEX-SS were sensitive to the variations of pH and redox environment. Nanogels incubated in buffer pH 5.0 containing 10mM glutathione (GSH) synergistically increased the mean diameter and the PDI to 750nm and 0.42, respectively. In vitro release experiments were performed at pH 7.4 and 5.0 with and without GSH. The cumulative release of MTX in pH 5.0 medium with 10mMGSH was 5-fold higher than that recorded at pH 7.4 without GSH. Fibroblasts and tumor cells were used to tests the effects of blank DEX-SS and MTX@DEX-SS nanogels on cell viability. We validated the anticancer potential of a nanoformulation made by (+)-catechin, gelatin and carbon nanotubes in terms of inhibition of cancer cell proliferation, migration and associated neo-angiogenesis. Gelatin was selected to stabilize the catechin without compromising its anti-oxidant potential and the carbon nanotubes were used to increase its intracellular bioavailability. The anticancer potential of the resulting nanohybrid was validated on an aggressive melanoma cell line, in vitro and in zebrafish xenotransplants. The nanohybrid strongly enhances the cytotoxic effect of (+)-catechin. At a concentration of (+)-catechin 50μg/ml, the nanohybrid inhibited the ability of melanoma cells to proliferate (100% increase of cell doubling time and severe impairment in zebrafish xenotransplants), to migrate (totally inhibition in vitro and 50% reduction of cell motility in zebrafish xenotransplants) and to induce neo-angiogenesis (100% inhibition in zebrafish xenotransplants). Conversely, the free (+)-catechin and carrier (CNT:gel) had no statistically significant effects over the control, at any concentration tested. Cancer is one of the leading non-communicable diseases with highest mortality rates worldwide. About half of all cancer patients receive radiation treatment in the course of their disease. However, treatment outcome and curative potential of radiotherapy is often impeded by genetically and/or environmentally driven mechanisms of tumor radioresistance and normal tissue radiotoxicity. While nanomedicine-based tools for imaging, dosimetry and treatment are potential keys to the improvement of therapeutic efficacy and reducing side effects, radiotherapy is an established technique to eradicate the tumor cells. In order to progress the introduction of nanoparticles in radiooncology, due to the highly interdisciplinary nature, expertise in chemistry, radiobiology and translational research is needed. In this report recent insights and promising policies to design nanotechnology-based therapeutics for tumor radiosensitization will be discussed. An attempt is made to cover the entire field from preclinical development to clinical studies. Hence, this report illustrates (1) the radio- and tumor-biological rationales for combining nanostructures with radiotherapy, (2) tumor-site targeting strategies and mechanisms of cellular uptake, (3) biological response hypotheses for new nanomaterials of interest, and (4) challenges to translate the research findings into clinical trials., (Copyright © 2016 Elsevier Ltd.
