NOMAD is a neutrino oscillation experiment designed to search for $\nu_\tau$ appearance in the CERN-SPS wide band $\nu_\mu$ beam. Signal detection relies on the identification of $\nu_\tau$ charge d current interactions using kinematic criteria. The analysis of the 1995 data sample yields no oscillation signal. Combining all studied $\tau$ decay modes, a limit of $\sin^22\theta_{\mu \tau}~< ~4.2\times10^{-3}$ is obtained for large $\Delta m^2$ at the 90\% confidence level.

The NOMAD experiment is a short base-line search for $\nu_{\mu}\rightarrow \nu_{\tau}$ oscillations in the CERN neutrino beam. The $\nu_{\tau}$'s are searched for through their charged-current interactions followed by the observation of the resulting $\tau^{-}$ through its electronic, muonic or hadronic decays. These decays are recognized using kinematical criteria necessitating the use of a light target which enables the reconstruction of individual particles produced in the neutrino interactions. This paper describes the various components of the NOMAD detector: the target and muon drift chambers, the electromagnetic and hadronic calorimeters, the preshower and transition radiation detectors, and the veto and trigger scintillation counters. The beam and data acquisition system are also described. The quality of the reconstruction of individual particles is demonstrated through the ability of NOMAD to observe K$^0_{\rm s}$'s, $\Lambda^0$'s and $\pi^0$'s. Finally, the observation of $\tau^{-}$ through its electronic decay being one of the most promising channels in the search, the identification of electrons in NOMAD is discussed.

The first combined test of an electromagnetic liquid argon accordion calorimeter and a hadronic scintillating-tile calorimeter was carried out at the CERN SPS. These devices are prototypes of the barrel calorimeter of the future ATLAS experiment at the LHC. The energy resolution of pions in the energy range from 20 to 300~GeV at an incident angle $\theta$ of about 11$^\circ$ is well-described by the expression $\sigma/E = ((46.5 \pm 6.0)\%/\sqrt{E} +(1.2 \pm 0.3)\%) \oplus (3.2 \pm 0.4)~\mbox{GeV}/E$. Shower profiles, shower leakage, and the angular resolution of hadronic showers were also studied.

- Abstract
The recent advances in the knowledge of the psychoneuroimmunological pathogenesis of human neoplasms have demonstrated the existence of feed-back mechanisms operating between interleukins and endocrine secretions, which play an important role in the regulation of the immune responses, including the anticancer immunity. In contrast, few studies only have been performed to investigate the possible relation between endocrine activities and hematopoietic growth factors. The present study was performed to analyze the acute endocrine effects of erythropoietin-alpha (EPO) on the main endocrine secretions. The study was carried out in 10 advanced solid tumor patients. EPO was injected subcutaneously at a dose of 10,000 U, and venous blood samples were collected before and 2, 4 and 6 h after EPO administration. No significant changes in mean serum levels of FSH, LH and TSH were seen in response to EPO. Cortisol and DHEAS concentrations increased after EPO injection, whereas those of PRL decreased, but none of these differences was statistically significant. Finally, mean serum levels of both growth hormone (GH) and somatomedin-C (IGF-1) significantly decreased after EPO administration. This preliminary study shows that EPO may inhibit GH secretion from the pituitary gland and IGF-1 production. Since GH would stimulate EPO release, the results of this study may suggest the existence of feedback mechanism operating between GH secretion and EPO production, with inhibitory effect of EPO on GH secretion, and stimulatory action of GH on EPO production. Therefore, this study would describe the first example of hemato-endocrine feedback mechanisms. Moreover, this study, by showing an inhibitory effect of EPO on IGF-1 secretion, would suggest a possible use of EPO in the medical oncology not only for the treatment of cancer related anemia, but also to counteract tumor growth by blocking IGF-1 production, which has been proven to be a growth factor for several tumor histotypes. The two-jet invariant mass spectrum as measured in the UA2 experiment is used to search for additional heavy vector bosons decaying to two-jets. The mass of an additional W boson that couples to fermions with a V + A form is constrained to be greater than 261 GeV to the 90% confidence level. A limit on the production cross section of additional W and Z bosons is given as a function of the boson mass. A limit on the production of excited quarks is also given as a function of the excited quark mass.

SCINTILLATING FIBER DETECTOR, STRUCTURE-FUNCTION F2(X - Abstract
A measurement of the gluon structure fusion using direct photon events observed with the UA2 detector in ppBAR collisions at square-root s = 630 GeV is presented. The x-range covered by this analysis is between 0.049 and 0.207 and the Q2 range is between 280 GeV2 and 3670 GeV2. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 7.14 pb-1. The results are found to be in good agreement with the gluon distributions measured in deep inelastic scattering experiments extrapolated to the UA2 Q2 values.

The process ppBAR --> e-nu-gamma + X is studied as square-root s = 630 GeV. The observed signal is used to extract a direct measurement of the parameters-kappa and lambda which define the magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole moments of the W boson and therefore the WW-gamma coupling. We find kappa = 1(-2.2)+2.6 and lambda = 0(-1.8)+1.7 and their 95% confidence limits -3.5 < kappa < 5.9 and -3.6 < lambda < 3.5. The results are model independent and in good agreement with the standard model values, kappa = 1 and lambda = 0.

A search has been made for scalar leptoquark pair production with the upgraded UA2 detector at the CERN ppBAR Coolider at square-root s = 630 GeV, investigating decays of the leptoquark into a quark and either an electron or an electron neutrino. From an event sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 13 pb-1 a lower limit has been determined for the mass of first generation leptoquarks, yielding 67 GeV (95% CL) for a scalar leptoquark decaying with a 50% branching ratio into a quark and an electron.

UA2 EXPERIMENT ,SCINTILLATING FIBER DETECTOR - Abstract
Results are given on a search for the decay W+/- --> pi+/--gamma with the UA2 detector in ppBAR collisions at square-root s = 630 GeV. No signal for such a process is observed and upper limits on the ratio R = GAMMA(W+/- --> pi+/--gamma)/GAMMA(W+/- --> e+/--nu) < 4.9 x 10(-3) and on the branching ratio BR(W+/- --> pi+/--gamma) < 5.4 x 10(-4) are derived at 95% confidence level.
