Abstract

The eighteenth century was obsessed with the physiology and pathology of respiration and the necessity of clean air and strong winds for health and well-being. Air referred not only to the air we breathe, but also to the natural environments that produce (i.e., breathe) and determine the quality of air. Knoeff’s essay is concerned with the question of how the (psycho) pathology of respiration is bound up (conspires) with natural environments, not only in the literal sense (in urban spaces as well as the countryside) but also as represented in the material and visual culture of households, most notably in landscape paintings in living rooms. It was thought that the viewing of spacious landscapes would stimulate the imagination and literally give breathing space.

© 2021, The Author(s). Respiratory insufficiency is a leading cause of death due to drug overdose or neuromuscular disease. We hypothesized that a stimulation paradigm using temporal interference (TI) could restore breathing in such conditions. Following opioid overdose in rats, two high frequency (5000 Hz and 5001 Hz), low amplitude waveforms delivered via intramuscular wires in the neck immediately activated the diaphragm and restored ventilation in phase with waveform offset (1 Hz or 60 breaths/min). Following cervical spinal cord injury (SCI), TI stimulation via dorsally placed epidural electrodes uni- or bilaterally activated the diaphragm depending on current and electrode position. In silico modeling indicated that an interferential signal in the ventral spinal cord predicted the evoked response (left versus right diaphragm) and current-ratio-based steering. We conclude that TI stimulation can activate spinal motor neurons after SCI and prevent fatal apnea during drug overdose by restoring ventilation with minimally invasive electrodes.

243. Implant Removal Due to Infection After Open Reduction and Internal Fixation: Trends and Predictors

Abstract

BACKGROUND: Implant removal due to infection is one of the major causes failure following open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). The aim of this study was to determine trends and predictors of infection-related implant removal following ORIF of extremities using a nationally representative database. METHODS: Nationwide Inpatient Sample data from 2006 to 2017 was used to identify cases of ORIF following upper and lower extremity fractures, as well as cases that underwent infection-related implant removal following ORIF. Multivariate analysis was performed to identify independent predictors of infection-related implant removal, controlling for patient demographics and comorbidities, hospital characteristics, site of fracture, and year. RESULTS: For all ORIF procedures, the highest rate of implant removal due to infection was the phalanges/hand (5.61%), phalanges/foot (5.08%), and the radius/ulna (4.85%). Implant removal rates due to infection decreased in all fractures except radial/ulnar fractures. Tarsal/metatarsal fractures (odds ratio (OR)=1.45, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.02-2.05), and tibial fractures (OR=1.82, 95% CI: 1.45-2.28) were identified as independent predictors of infection-related implant removal. 249. Implications of the Cattell-Horn-Carroll theory on ethnic differences in IQ

Abstract

The Cattell-Horn-Carroll theory of intelligence and the Spearman-Jensen hypothesis were applied to help interpret mean IQ differences among ethnic groups. The Cattell-Horn-Carroll theory classifies cognitive abilities on three strata, which differ by magnitude of generality including specific, broad, and general abilities. The Spearman-Jensen hypothesis advances the belief that mean IQ differences between African Americans and Euro-Americans occur as a function of the test's g loadings. Although IQ differences between African Americans and Euro Americans occur, the differences should be larger on tests with higher g loadings and smaller on tests with lower g loadings. The analysis described in this paper may serve as the catalyst to encourage all intelligence test publishers to supply test users with data regarding mean IQ differences among various ethnic groups.
