202. Promoting L2 writing development via a concept-based approach to teaching genre: A sociocultural intervention study in Chinese EFL writing classrooms

Abstract

This article investigates the effect of concept-based instruction (CBI), a pedagogy based on Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory, on second language (L2) learners’ writing development. A quasi-experimental intervention lasting 16 weeks was conducted involving 88 first-year Chinese university students of English. The participants were assigned to three conditions: Full CBI (F-CBI) treatment, Partial CBI (P-CBI) treatment (i.e. CBI without peer–peer talk) and control. A definition task and two writing tasks (a narrative and an argumentative task) were used to measure students’ knowledge and understanding of genre and their writing performance, respectively. The results indicated that the F-CBI intervention generated significantly larger gains in learners’ understanding of genre as well as their overall writing performance than did the control group. In addition, a significant difference was also observed between the F-CBI group and the P-CBI group in the definition task and the argumentative task, which further suggests that peer–peer talk plays a crucial role in enhancing learners’ conceptual development. This study highlights the feasibility and effectiveness of integrating CBI in L2 writing instruction and the importance of engaging learners to talk through their understanding and use of concepts in the classroom. Theoretical contributions to Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory of mind are also discussed.

Abstract

The KamLAND-Zen experiment has provided stringent constraints on the neutrinoless double-beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay half-life in $^{136}$Xe using a xenon-loaded liquid scintillator. We report an improved search using an upgraded detector with almost double the amount of xenon and an ultralow radioactivity container, corresponding to an exposure of 970 kg yr of $^{136}$Xe. These new data provide valuable insight into backgrounds, especially from cosmic muon spallation of xenon, and have required the use of novel background rejection techniques. We obtain a lower limit for the $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay half-life of $T_{1/2}^{0\nu} > 2.3 \times 10^{26}$ yr at 90% C.L., corresponding to upper limits on the effective Majorana neutrino mass of 36-156 meV using commonly adopted nuclear matrix element calculations., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

We report the result of a search for neutrinos in coincidence with solar flares from the GOES flare database. The search was performed on a 10.8 kton-year exposure of KamLAND collected from 2002 to 2019. This large exposure allows us to explore previously unconstrained parameter space for solar flare neutrinos. We found no statistical excess of neutrinos and established 90% confidence level upper limits of 8.4 × 107 cm-2 (3.0 × 109 cm-2) on the electron antineutrino (electron neutrino) fluence at 20 MeV normalized to the X12 flare, assuming that the neutrino fluence is proportional to the X-ray intensity.

207. Disorder-driven ferromagnetic insulator phase in manganite heterostructures

Abstract

Ferromagnetic insulator plays a pivotal role in various emerging spintronic effects and can be integrated as an essential component into future spintronic devices. However, ferromagnetic insulating perovskite oxides are rather scarce due to the strong coupling between ferromagnetism and metallicity via double exchange and superexchange mechanisms, severely restricting the development for oxide-based spintronic devices. Here, the disorder of manganite La2/3Sr1/3MnO3 (LSMO) films grown on MgAl2O4 substrates is utilized to decouple ferromagnetism and metallicity, thereby inducing a ferromagnetic insulating state over a rather broad temperature and thickness range. These films are non-crystalline with enormous disorder. The films with thicknesses less than 16 nm are in completely insulating state, and the films with thicknesses larger than 16 nm are in essentially insulating state with high resistivity. This insulating state is ascribed to the disorder in LSMO films and can be fitted by a localization model. In contrast, all LSMO films exhibit ferromagnetic transitions with considerable saturated magnetic moments and the Curie temperatures near room temperature, leading to the ferromagnetic insulator phase in our manganite heterostructures over a large temperature and thickness interval. Our results broaden the mind for inducing new ferromagnetic insulating state for potential applications in spintronic devices.

208. Interface engineering of phase separation in SrRuO3/SrTiO3 hybrid superlattices

Abstract

Most observed phase separation phenomena in complex oxides occur in systems with chemical dopants or structural defects, and theories have established the strong connection between phase separation and the random distribution of chemical dopants. Recent experiments on fabricated high-quality oxide superlattices also confirmed that the phase separation is suppressed in the clean systems without chemical disorders. Thus far, phase separation in strongly correlated oxides without the need of chemical dopants or structural defects has not been fully demonstrated. Here, we have built chemically ordered hybrid superlattices using prototypical SrRuO3 and SrTiO3 perovskite oxides. Contrary to previous understandings, we observe phase separation of two magnetic phases with different spin easy axes. We elucidate this phenomenon through first-principles calculations that the hybrid superlattices have a spontaneous structural instability, leading to a coexistence of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases. Our findings provide an alternative pathway other than chemical doping to introduce phase separation in correlated oxides and imply that phase separation can exist in clean systems without the need of chemical disorders.

Abstract

PURPOSE: Advanced-stage mucinous ovarian carcinoma (MOC) has poor chemotherapy response and prognosis and lacks biomarkers to aid stage I adjuvant treatment. Differentiating primary MOC from gastrointestinal (GI) metastases to the ovary is also challenging due to phenotypic similarities. Clinicopathologic and gene-expression data were analyzed to identify prognostic and diagnostic features. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Discovery analyses selected 19 genes with prognostic/diagnostic potential. Validation was performed through the Ovarian Tumor Tissue Analysis consortium and GI cancer biobanks comprising 604 patients with MOC (n = 333), mucinous borderline ovarian tumors (MBOT, n = 151), and upper GI (n = 65) and lower GI tumors (n = 55). RESULTS: Infiltrative pattern of invasion was associated with decreased overall survival (OS) within 2 years from diagnosis, compared with expansile pattern in stage I MOC [hazard ratio (HR), 2.77; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.04-7.41, P = 0.042]. Increased expression of THBS2 and TAGLN was associated with shorter OS in MOC patients (HR, 1.25; 95% CI, 1.04-1.51, P = 0.016) and (HR, 1.21; 95% CI, 1.01-1.45, P = 0.043), respectively. ERBB2 (HER2) amplification or high mRNA expression was evident in 64 of 243 (26%) of MOCs, but only 8 of 243 (3%) were also infiltrative (4/39, 10%) or stage III/IV (4/31, 13%). CONCLUSIONS: An infiltrative growth pattern infers poor prognosis within 2 years from diagnosis and may help select stage I patients for adjuvant therapy. High expression of THBS2 and TAGLN in MOC confers an adverse prognosis and is upregulated in the infiltrative subtype, which warrants further investigation. Anti-HER2 therapy should be investigated in a subset of patients. MOC samples clustered with upper GI, yet markers to differentiate these entities remain elusive, suggesting similar underlying biology and shared treatment strategies.

Abstract

The development of LiFePO4 (LFP) in high-power energy storage devices is hampered by its slow Li-ion diffusion kinetics. Constructing the composite electrode materials with vanadium substitution is a scientific endeavor to boost LFP's power capacity. Herein, a series of xLiFePO4·yLi3V2(PO4)3 (xLFP·yLVP) composites were fabricated using a simple spray-drying approach. We propose that 5LFP·LVP is the optimal choice for Li-ion battery promotion, owning to its excellent Li-ion storage capacity (material energy density of 413.6 W·h·kg-1), strong machining capability (compacted density of 1.82 g·cm-3) and lower raw material cost consumption. Furthermore, the 5LFP·LVP||LTO Li-ion pouch cell also presents prominent energy storage capability. After 300 cycles of a constant current test at 400 mA, 75% of the initial capacity (379.1 mA·h) is achieved, with around 100% of Coulombic efficiency. A capacity retention of 60.3% is displayed for the 300th cycle when discharging at 1200 mA, with the capacity fading by 0.15% per cycle. This prototype provides a valid and scientific attempt to accelerate the development of xLFP·yLVP composites in application-oriented Li-ion batteries.

Abstract

We present the results of a time-coincident event search for low-energy electron antineutrinos in the KamLAND detector with gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) from the Gamma-ray Coordinates Network and Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor. Using a variable coincidence time window of ±500 s plus the duration of each GRB, no statistically significant excess above the background is observed. We place the world’s most stringent 90% confidence level upper limit on the electron antineutrino fluence below 17.5 MeV. Assuming a Fermi–Dirac neutrino energy spectrum from the GRB source, we use the available redshift data to constrain the electron antineutrino luminosity and effective temperature.

Abstract

Abstract We present the results of a search for MeV-scale electron antineutrino events in KamLAND coincident with the 60 gravitational wave events/candidates reported by the LIGO/Virgo collaboration during their second and third observing runs. We find no significant coincident signals within a ±500 s timing window from each gravitational wave and present 90% C.L. upper limits on the electron antineutrino fluence between 108 and 1013 cm−2 for neutrino energies in the energy range of 1.8–111 MeV.

213. Limits on Astrophysical Antineutrinos with the KamLAND Experiment

Abstract

We report on a search for electron antineutrinos (${\bar{\nu }}_{e}$) from astrophysical sources in the neutrino energy range 8.3–30.8 MeV with the KamLAND detector. In an exposure of 6.72 kton-year of the liquid scintillator, we observe 18 candidate events via the inverse beta decay reaction. Although there is a large background uncertainty from neutral current atmospheric neutrino interactions, we find no significant excess over background model predictions. Assuming several supernova relic neutrino spectra, we give upper flux limits of 60–110 cm−2 s−1 (90% confidence level, CL) in the analysis range and present a model-independent flux. We also set limits on the annihilation rates for light dark matter pairs to neutrino pairs. These data improve on the upper probability limit of 8B solar neutrinos converting into ${\bar{\nu }}_{e}$, ${P}_{{\nu }_{e}\to {\bar{\nu }}_{e}}\lt 3.5\times {10}^{-5}$ (90% CL) assuming an undistorted ${\bar{\nu }}_{e}$ shape. This corresponds to a solar ${\bar{\nu }}_{e}$ flux of 60 cm−2 s−1 (90% CL) in the analysis energy range.

Abstract We report the result of a search for neutrinos in coincidence with solar flares from the GOES flare database. The search was performed on a 10.8 kton-year exposure of KamLAND collected from 2002 to 2019. This large exposure allows us to explore previously unconstrained parameter space for solar flare neutrinos. We found no statistical excess of neutrinos and established 90% confidence level upper limits of 8.4 × 107 cm−2 (3.0 × 109 cm−2) on the electron antineutrino (electron neutrino) fluence at 20 MeV normalized to the X12 flare, assuming that the neutrino fluence is proportional to the X-ray intensity.

These drawbacks are attributed to a variety of factors, including inoculation of heterogeneous tumor cells from patients with different pathological histories, and use of poorly defined Matrigel®. In this study, we aimed to tissue-engineer a pancreatic cancer model that could readily cultivate a pancreatic tumor derived from highly homogenous CD24+CD44+ pancreatic cancer stem cells delivered by a well defined electrospun scaffold of poly(glycolide-co-trimethylene carbonate) and gelatin. The scaffold supported in vitro tumorigenesis from CD24+CD44+ cancer stem cells for up to 7 days without inducing apoptosis. Moreover, CD24+CD44+ cancer stem cells delivered by the scaffold grew into a native-like mature pancreatic tumor within 8 weeks in vivo and exhibited accelerated tumorigenesis as well as a higher incidence of tumor formation than the traditional model. In the scaffold model, we discovered that oxaliplatin-gemcitabine (OXA-GEM), a chemotherapeutic regimen, induced tumor regression whereas gemcitabine alone only capped tumor growth. The mechanistic study attributed the superior antitumorigenic performance of OXA-GEM to its ability to induce apoptosis of CD24+CD44+ cancer stem cells. Compared with the traditional model, the scaffold model demonstrated a higher incidence of tumor formation and accelerated tumor growth. Use of a tiny population of highly homogenous CD24+CD44+ cancer stem cells delivered by a well defined scaffold greatly reduces the variability associated with the traditional model, which uses a heterogeneous tumor cell population and poorly defined Matrigel. The scaffold model is a robust platform for investigating the antitumorigenesis mechanism of novel chemotherapeutic drugs with a special focus on cancer stem cells.Keywords: pancreatic cancer, cancer stem cell, electrospun scaffold, gemcitabine, oxaliplatin

Abstract

BACKGROUND: The cytotoxic T lymphocyte-associated molecules-4 (CTLA-4) is related to the relapse of Graves’ disease (GD) after anti-thyroid drugs (ATDs) withdrawal. We performed a meta-analysis to generate large-scale evidence on whether the CTLA-4 exon 1+49A/G polymorphism can predict the relapse of GD after ATDs withdrawal. METHODS AND RESULTS: The PubMed, EMBASE,the Cochrane Library and reference lists of relevant studies were searched to identify eligible studies from inception to Jan, 2021. Ten eligible studies consisting of 1450 GD patients with a total of 848 relapsed patients were included in the meta-analysis. In Caucasians patients, the CTLA-4 exon 1+49A/G polymorphism significantly elevated the relapse risk of GD in additive (OR = 2.07, 95% CI: 1.18-3.62, P=0.011), dominant (OR = 2.52, 95% CI: 1.17-5.41, P=0.02), homozygote model(OR = 3.264, 95% CI: 1.25-8.52, P=0.016), except recessive (OR = 2.18, 95% CI = 0.98-4.86, P = 0.062) and heterozygote model (OR = 2.141, 95% CI = 0.958-4.786, P = 0.064). In Asian subgroup, none of these genotypes show any associations with the relapse of GD after ATDs withdrawal. CONCLUSION: This meta-analysis suggests that the CTLA-4 exon1 +49A/G polymorphism is associated with the relapse risk of GD after ATDs withdrawal in Caucasians, not Asians. Compared with the AA genotype, Caucasian patients with GG genotype have 3.264 times risk of relapse. A more aggressive treatment such as radioactive iodine or thyroidectomy, or longer periods treatment of ATDs should be recommended in Caucasian patients with the GG genotype.

Abstract

Objective Evidence on the association between sleep duration and obesity among adults is inconsistent. Prospective studies investigating the association in Chinese adults have been limited. This study aims to prospectively evaluate sleep duration in relation to subsequent weight gain and general and central obesity risk among Chinese adults. Methods A total of 21,958 participants aged 30 to 79 years reported their daily sleep duration. Obesity indicators were objectively measured; then significant weight gain (≥ 5 kg) and general and central obesity were modeled as the outcome. Logistic regression models were used to estimate odds ratios and 95% CIs. Results Average sleep duration was 7.5 hours at baseline. During 8.0 ± 0.8 years of follow‐up, participants who reported sleeping ≤ 6 hours had higher risk for significant weight gain than those who slept 7 hours (multivariable‐adjusted odds ratio: 1.13; 95% CI: 1.02‐1.29). The association was stronger among those who were physically inactive at baseline (P = 0.04 for interaction). Short sleep duration was also associated with subsequent incident central obesity, with odds ratio of 1.13 (95% CI: 1.00‐1.28), but not with incident general obesity (P = 0.31). Conclusions Compared with those who slept 7 hours per day, short sleepers had an increased risk of significant weight gain and central obesity.

244. Air film evolution during droplet impact onto a solid surface

Abstract

Recent years see increasing studies of air entrapment during droplet impacting on a solid surface with many results. The dynamics of trapped air film during a droplet impact on a solid surface is investigated in this work by the phase field method in combination with a dynamic contact angle (DCA) model. The DCA model is established experimentally by capturing the droplet dynamics in analogy to the entrapped air evolution. By using the DCA model as the input, the simulation can accurately reproduce the experimental results. The effects of droplet viscosity and surface tension on the dynamics of the air film are then studied, and three possible regimes are identified, demarcated by an effective Ohnesorge number (Ohe). Regime 1 is the case where no daughter droplet is generated and the air bubble is always attached to the substrate, corresponding to the classical case at a high Ohe number (Ohe > 0.073). Regime 3 is a newly discovered regime in this work where a daughter droplet is generated and the air bubble is always detached from the substrate, corresponding to a low Ohe number (Ohe < 0.019) due to combined strong surface tension and vortex effects. Regime 2 is for moderate Ohe numbers where a daughter droplet is generated and the air bubble can either detach from or attach to the substrate. Different from conventional thought that the detachment in this regime is decided by a static contact angle, the DCA plays a leading role in determining the volume ratio of the daughter droplet to the gas bubble, and the combined effects determine the fate of the bubble. Such finding provides better insight on the entrapped air dynamics upon droplet impacting on a solid surface, an area of high engineering importance.

Abstract

The Cryogenic Underground Observatory for Rare Events (CUORE) is the first bolometric experiment searching for neutrinoless double beta decay that has been able to reach the 1-ton scale. In this talk we present the neutrinoless doube beta decay results of CUORE from examining a total TeO2 exposure of 86.3 kg yr, characterized by an effective energy resolution of 7.7 keV FWHM and a background in the region of interest of 0.014 counts/(keV kg yr). In this physics run, CUORE placed a lower limit on the decay half-life of 130Te > 1.3×1025 yr (90% C.L.). We then discuss the additional improvements in the detector performance achieved in 2018 and the latest update on the evaluation of the background budget.
