Abstract

Plusieurs programmes numériques permettent, aujourd'hui, de déterminer les flux d'échanges d'air entre locaux d'un bâtiment et avec l'extérieur, en fonction des conditions de pression. Bien que précis et détaillés, ces programmes ont pour principal inconvénient de ne pas pouvoir prendre en compte le comportement des occupants en matière d'aération (ouvertures des portes et fenêtres). Différentes études ont montré que ce comportement avait une influence prépondérante sur le renouvellement d'air des bâtiments, et par là sur leur consommation énergétique. Son intégraton aux programmes de dimensionnement, en particulier, s'avère donc indispensable.

Abstract

Airflow rates, hence energy consumption, are directly affected by the amount of open area and consequently by the inhabitant behavior with respect to window opening. This report describes stochastic models using Markov chains, and used to generate time series of window and door openings or window opening angles. It is based on data measured on one hand at he LESO and on the other hand by the TNO Delft on 80 identical, 16 openings dwellings located at Schiedam (NL). The models are validated by a comparison of the real and generated data. The use of these models within building air infiltration design programmes should improve significantly the likelihood of the latter.

Abstract

Nowadays it is possible to unravel complex information at all levels of cellular organization by obtaining multi-dimensional image information. at the macromolecular level, three-dimensional (3D) electron microscopy, together with other techniques, is able to reach resolutions at the nanometer or subnanometer level. The information is delivered in the form of 3D volumes containing samples of a given function, for example, the electron density distribution within a given macromolecule. The same situation happens at the cellular level with the new forms of light microscopy, particularly confocal microscopy, all of which produce biological 3D volume information. Furthermore, it is possible to record sequences of images over time (videos), as well as sequences of volumes, bringing key information on the dynamics of living biological systems. It is in this context that work on bioimage started two years ago, and that its first version is now presented here. In essence, Bioimage is a database specifically designed to contain multi-dimensional images, perform queries and interactively work with the resulting multi-dimensional information on the World Wide Web, as well as accomplish the required cross-database links. 248. Education and income: which is more important for mental health?

Abstract

Study objective: To assess which indicators of socioeconomic status are associated with an increased prevalence of common mental disorders. Design: Cross sectional household survey. Setting: Santiago, Chile. Participants: Random sample of adults aged 16-65 residing in private households. Main results: Less education (odds ratio 2.44, 95% confidence intervals 1.50 to 3.97), a recent income decrease (odds ratio 2.14, 1.70 to 2.70), and poor housing (odds ratio 1.53, 1.05 to 2.23), were the only socioeconomic status variables that remained significantly associated with an increased prevalence of common mental disorders after adjustments. The prevalence of common mental disorders was also higher among people with manual unskilled occupations, overcrowded housing, and lower per capita income but these associations disappeared after adjustment for other explanatory and confounding variables. Conclusions: There is a strong, inverse, and independent association between education and common mental disorders. However, income was not associated with the prevalence of common mental disorders, after adjusting for other socioeconomic variables. Similar results have been found in other Latin American studies but British studies tend to find the opposite, that income but not education is associated with common mental disorders. Understanding the impact of socioeconomic factors on mental health requires research in poor as well as rich countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Abstract Background Depression is common and can have devastating effects on the life of adolescents. Psychological interventions are the first-line for treating or preventing depression among adolescents. This proposal aims to evaluate a school-based, universal psychological intervention to reduce depressive symptoms among student's aged 13-14 attending municipal state secondary schools in Santiago, Chile. Study design This is a cluster randomised controlled trial with schools as the main clusters. We compared this intervention with a control group in a study involving 22 schools, 66 classes and approximately 2,600 students. Students in the active schools attended 11 weekly and 3 booster sessions of an intervention based on cognitive-behavioural models. The control schools received their usual but enhanced counselling sessions currently included in their curriculum. Mean depression scores and indicators of levels of functioning were assessed at 3 and 12 months after the completion of the intervention in order to assess the effectiveness of the intervention. Direct and indirect costs were measured in both groups to assess the cost-effectiveness of this intervention. Discussion As far as we are aware this is the first cluster randomised controlled trial of a school intervention for depression among adolescents outside the Western world. Abstract

Abstract Background Daphniids, commonly known as waterfleas, serve as important model systems for ecology, evolution and the environmental sciences. The sequencing and annotation of the Daphnia pulex genome both open future avenues of research on this model organism. As proteomics is not only essential to our understanding of cell function, and is also a powerful validation tool for predicted genes in genome annotation projects, a first proteomic dataset is presented in this article. Results A comprehensive set of 701,274 peptide tandem-mass-spectra, derived from Daphnia pulex, was generated, which lead to the identification of 531 proteins. To measure the impact of the Daphnia pulex filtered models database for mass spectrometry based Daphnia protein identification, this result was compared with results obtained with the Swiss-Prot and the Drosophila melanogaster database. To further validate the utility of the Daphnia pulex database for research on other Daphnia species, additional 407,778 peptide tandem-mass-spectra, obtained from Daphnia longicephala, were generated and evaluated, leading to the identification of 317 proteins. Conclusion Peptides identified in our approach provide the first experimental evidence for the translation of a broad variety of predicted coding regions within the Daphnia genome. Furthermore it could be demonstrated that identification of Daphnia longicephala proteins using the Daphnia pulex protein database is feasible but shows a slightly reduced identification rate. Data provided in this article clearly demonstrates that the Daphnia genome database is the key for mass spectrometry based high throughput proteomics in Daphnia.
