We describe a 56-year-old Caucasian man with history of multiple regressed basal cell carcinomas. During the last 20 years approximately 200 histologically proven basal cell carcinomas preferentially localized on the face were surgically treated. Several large skin grafts were necessary to cover the extensive tissue defects on the face and scalp. Although all excised tissues were histologically proven to be basal cell carcinomas with tumor-free margins, new tumors developed in proximity to the skin graft margins. The dissemination of the new tumors made it difficult to perform additional invasive operation procedures without influencing the cosmetic result. Thus, we used photodynamic diagnosis to improve detection and demarcation of the neoplastic tissues. This procedure facilitated surgical planning and enabled primary in toto excisions. Surgical trauma and a number of interventions were thus minimized with the consequence of improved cosmetic and functional results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Many factors affect the rate of deterioration of a fat used for deep fat frying. Because of the complexity of the problem, there is no single procedure which will yield reliable results in all situations. Determination of total polar materials in a frying fat provides the most reliable measure of the extent of deterioration in most cases. For monitoring a frying operation in which there is no dilution of the frying fat by the fat in the food being fried, the change in the dielectric constant is the simplest of the methods judged reliable. Free fatty acid determinations by titration and peroxide value are not recommended procedures for measuring frying fat deterioration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Alkali refined palm oil and hydrogenated cotton-seed oil were stabilized with butylated hydroxytoluene, butylated hydroxyanisole, and tertiary butylhydroquinone. Under bulk storage temperatures significant reductions in the peroxide formation of palm oil were obtained only with tertiary butyl-hydroquinone. The reduction in peroxide formation with tertiary butylhydroquinone was much greater than anticipated from the active oxygen method results. The stability improvement of a snack product fried in palm oil stabilized with tertiary butylhydroquinone depended greatly on the frying conditions used. Under mild frying conditions tertiary butyl-hydroquinone had somewhat greater carry-through than butylated hydroxytoluene. Under more severe frying conditions tertiary butylhydroquinone provided less protection than butylated hydroxytoluene. Both palm oil and hydrogenated cottonseed oil stabilized with only butylated hydroanisole had higher active oxygen stabilities than the unstabilized controls; however, no reduction in peroxide formation of the butylated hydroxyanisole oils compared to the controls was found during storage of the oil or the snack product at 50-60 C. Abstract Pigmentary abberations of the skin, mucosa and epidermal appendages are common side-effects after systemic treatment with chemotherapeutic agents. These pigment changes appear in different patterns and are partly quite typical for the applied chemotherapeutic drug. The pathogenesis of the different skin pigmentations are not well known. The most often discussed causes are the stimulation of melanocytes, involvement of the tyrosinase enzyme system and thrombophlebitis with postinflammatory hyperpigmentation by the aggressive substances. Nail discolorations are mainly due to direct toxic effects and stimulation of the matrix melanocytes. We report a rare event of supravenous hyperpigmentation, transverse leuconychia and melanonychia after chemotherapy of a patient suffering from Hodgkin’s disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In ultrasound imaging with arrays the frame rate is limited by the number of insonifications of the inspected medium. In the limit, a single omnidirectional or plane wave insonification (OWI or PWI, respectively) would provide the maximum frame rate. However, since focusing is applied in reception only, this method yields a poor image quality (resolution, SNR, sidelobe levels, etc.). By contrast, multi-insonification techniques, such as the Total Focusing Method (TFM) or Multi-Plane Wave Imaging (M-PWI) provide the highest quality images, although they require more acquisition time. This work tries to achieve the image quality of TFM and M-PWI with a single plane-wave insonification to provide ultra-fast imaging at frame rates of tens of KHz. This is achieved by weighting the plane wave image with a phase coherence factor that keeps in-focus indications and suppresses spurious signals. The bases of the new Plane Wave with Phase Coherence Imaging (PWPCI) are described. Experimental work is also carried out to contrast the image quality with that provided by the well established gold standard TFM. This work demonstrates that the proposed PWPCI technique provides similar or superior image quality than TFM at significantly higher frame rates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ultrasound detection and evaluation of flaws in materials showing structural noise (austenitic steels, titanium alloys, composites, etc.) is difficult because of the low flaw-to-grain noise ratio. Much research has been performed looking for methods to improve flaw detection in grained materials. Many approaches require a cumbersome tuning process to select the correct parameter values or to use iterative techniques. In this work, the technique of phase coherence imaging is proposed to improve the flaw-to-grain noise ratio. The technique weights the output of a conventional beamformer with a coherence factor obtained from the aperture data phase dispersion. It can be simply implemented in real-time and it operates automatically, without needing any parameter adjustment. This paper presents the theoretical basis of phase coherence imaging to reduce grain noise, as well as experimental results that confirm the expected performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
