Abstract

The use of detailed spectroscopy to understand the processes which create and destroy 22Na was discussed. A reduction in the yield of 22Na was inferred from the hydrodynamical calculations incorporating the upper and lower limits. The accuracy of the excitation energy of the previous states was improved and the new states were identified in the relevant excitation region. A reduction in the maximum detectability distance for 22Na gamma rays from the novae was also shown.

Abstract

Experimental studies of the cluster structures in 9,10Be and 13,14C have been performed. Evidence for the α+5He decay of 9Be excited states, α+6He decays of 10Be∗ , α+9Be decay of 13C ∗ and for the decays of 14C ∗ into α+10Be were found. These decay processes indicate the cluster structures of the excited states. The results are compared with recent suggestions for the presence of molecule-like structures based upon α-particles and valence neutrons in Be and C isotopes., Eksperimentalno smo proučavali nakupinske strukture u 9,10Be i 13,14C. Našli smo α+5He raspad uzbuđenog stanja 9Be, α+6He raspad 10Be∗ , α+9Be raspad 13C ∗ te raspad 14C ∗ u α+10Be. Ovi procesi ukazuju na nakupinske strukture uzbuđenih stanja tih jezgri. Ishode mjerenja uspoređujemo s novim objašnjenjima o prisutnosti molekulama-sličnih struktura zasnovanim na α-česticama i valentnim neutronima u izotopima Be i C.

Abstract

The structure of 10Be has been investigated by inelastic scattering to states above the breakup threshold using the reaction 12C(10Be, 10Be*-->6He+4He)12C at Ebeam = 302 MeV. Excited states in 10Be were observed at 9.6&plusmn ; ; 0.1 and 10.2&plusmn ; ; 0.1 MeV. No evidence was observed for the population of the 4+ member of the ground-state band of 10Be indicating the shell-model-like structure of the ground state. In addition, the decay of 8Be, 10B, and 11B, populated in the two-neutron, proton pickup, breakup and 1p pickup reactions, was reconstructed through the detection of coincident 4He+4He, 4He+6Li, and 4He+7Li particles. Cross sections for the formation of the 8Be, 9Be, 10B, and 11B were also deduced. Contrary to expectations, the two-neutron removal results in the production of 8Be predominantly (80%) in the first excited (2+) state. This suggests that dynamical excitations play an important role in the neutron removal process.

Abstract

The experimental studies of the alpha-decaying excited states in 11, 13, 14C and 11, 12B have been performed using resonant particle spectroscopy techniques. Numerous excited states are observed in these nuclei. The results are in agreement with recent predictions of the presence of exotic cluster structures in these nuclei.

Abstract

Measurements of the neutron removal and cluster breakup cross sections for the neutron-rich nuclei 14Be and 14B have been performed at 34.4 and 40.8 MeV/nucleon, respectively. Enhancement of the first chance cluster breakup cross section for 14Be compared to that of 14B provides evidence for a well-developed He cluster structure of the ground state of 14Be. Measurements of both the cross sections and decay-particle velocities suggest that multistep processes play an important role in the excitation and decay of both 14B and 14Be.

Abstract

The alpha+6He decay of 10Be has been studied via the 7Li(7Li, alpha 6He)alpha reaction at 58 MeV. The excitation energy of the 10Be nucleus was determined following the coincident detection of the alpha and 6He decay products. A study of the fragment angular correlations has provided a spin assignment consistent with the previously reported value of 3- for the 10.15 MeV state in 10Be. A tentative assignment of (4+), 6+ is proposed for the 11.76 MeV state.

Abstract

A study of the 7Li(9Be,4He9Be)3H reaction at E{beam}=70 MeV has been performed using resonant particle spectroscopy techniques and provides a measurement of alpha-decaying states in 13C. Excited states are observed at 12.0, 13.4, 14.1, 14.6, 15.2, 16.8, 17.9, 18.7, 21.3 and 23.9 MeV. This study provides the first measurement of the three highest energy states. Angular distribution measurements have been performed and have been employed to indicate the transferred angular momentum for the populated states. Abstract

For many years the term nuclear molecule has been synonymous with the resonances found in interactions of two 12C nuclei at low energies. Similar behavior has been observed in the 12C+16O and 16O+16O systems. Those phenomena may be deemed to be molecular in nature owing to the deformations associated with an underlying two-body cluster structures. Recently, the term nuclear molecule has been used for the class of nuclear systems which show a behavior closely linked to that of covalently bonded atomic molecules. Such structures owe their existence to the dominant alpha-alpha cluster structure of the 8Be and other A=4n conjugate nuclei, which produces a two-, three- or many-centre potential in which the valence neutrons move. Theoretical considerations within the Antisymmetrized Molecular Dynamics and Molecular Orbit method validate this molecular interpretation of some light nuclei. Here I will report on recent experimental work of the Catania - Zagreb and Charissa collaborations in the study of structures of Be and C isotopes. Kinematically complete measurements of the many-body 7Li+7Li and 7Li+9Be reactions have employed charged particle break-up reactions as a tool with which to probe the molecular/cluster states. The observation of decay to final states with large overlaps with the cluster structure indicates special structure of these states. Perspectives and directions for future work on the topic, with emphasis on neutron rich nuclei will be given.

Abstract

The population and decay of excited states in 24Mg have been investigated using the 12C(16O, 12C12C)alpha reaction at beam energies of 135 and 160 MeV . This measurement permitted the decay spectrum to be measured up to 24Mg excitation energies of 70 MeV . Resonance structures were observed up to an excitation energy of 49.4 MeV and spin J = 18[h-bar] . The results are discussed in terms of the termination of a deformed 12C+12C cluster band.

Abstract

Postojeci rezultati daju dovoljno dokaza za razvijenu klastersku gradju ^8, 9, 10Be kao i njene indikacije za ^11, 12, 14Be. 3a klasterska gradja 12C omogucuje proširenje te slike na teže jezgre. Detaljna spektroskopska mjerenja tehnikama za reakcije prijenosa i raspada daju podatke o gradji jezgara u podrucju energija pobudjenja u kojima se javljuju klasterske strukture. Mjerenja su izvršena na tandem Van de Graaff akceleratoru Australskog nacionalnog sveucilišta u Canberri. Upotrebljeni detektorski sustav omogucio je da zanimljiva konacna stanja reakcije budu jednoznacno odredjena. U spektrima pobudjenja ^14C iz reakcije ^7Li(^9Be, ^14C*->^10Be+alfa)^2H po prvi put su detektirana stanja koja se raspadaju emisijom alfa-cestice. U mjerenjima su nadjeni raspadi u osnovno i pobudjena stanja ^10Be. Reakcija ^7Li(^9Be, ^13C*->^9Be+alfa)^3H omogucila je mjerenje pobudjenih stanja ^13C koja se raspadaju u alfa+^9Be(gs). Mjerenja daju prve rezultate alfa-raspada za visoko-pobudjena stanja. Detektirani procesi raspada stanja ^13, 14C su upotrebljeni za odredjivanje njihove moguce klasterske gradje. Rezultati su usporedjeni s predvidjanjima lancane gradje izotopa ugljika.

Abstract

The breakup reaction 9Be(4He, 3α)n was measured using an array of four double-sided silicon strip detectors at beam energies of 22 and 26 MeV. Excited states in 9Be up to 12 MeV were populated and reconstructed through the measurement of the charged reaction products. It is proposed that limits on the spins and parities of the states can be derived from the way that they decay. Various breakup paths for excited states in 9Be have been explored including the 8Beg.s. + n, 8Be2+ + n and 5Heg.s. + 4He channels. By imposing the condition that the breakup proceeded via the 8Be ground state, clean excitation spectra for 9Be were reconstructed. The remaining two breakup channels were found to possess strongly-overlapping kinematic signatures and more sophisticated methods (referenced) are required to completely disentangle these other possibilities. Emphasis is placed on the development of the experimental analysis and the usefulness of Monte-Carlo simulations for this purpose. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

4 pages, 3 figures.-- PACS nrs.: 27.20.+n, 24.30.Gd, 25.60.Dz, 25.60.Gc., The two-neutron halo nucleus Be-14 has been investigated in a kinematically complete measurement of the fragments (Be-12 and neutrons) produced in dissociation at 35 MeV/nucleon on C and Pb targets. Two-neutron removal cross sections, neutron angular distributions, and invariant mass spectra were measured, and the contributions from electromagnetic dissociation (EMD) were deduced. Comparison with three-body model calculations suggests that the halo wave function contains a large nu(2s(1/2))(2) admixture. The EMD invariant mass spectrum exhibited enhanced strength near threshold consistent with a nonresonant soft-dipole excitation., The authors are grateful to the support provided by the technical and operations staff of LPC and GANIL. This approach provides for the combined treatment of both the n-n and core-n interactions in the exit channel. As an example, the breakup of Be-14 into Be-12 + n + n by Pb and C targets has been analyzed and the halo n-n separation extracted. Evidence for a finite delay between the emission of the neutrons in the reaction on the C target was observed and is attributed to Be-13 resonances populated in sequential breakup., This work was funded under the auspices of the IN2P3-CNRS (France) and EPSRC (United Kingdom). Comparison with three-body model predictions indicate that the halo wavefunction contains a large 2s1/2^2 admixture. The EMD invariant mass spectrum exhibited a relatively narrow structure near threshold (Edecay=1.8+/-0.1 MeV, Gamma = 0.8+/-0.4 MeV) consistent with a soft-dipole excitation.

Abstract

We have studied the effects of electrode fabrication and detector capacitance on the time resolution of large area electronic grade polycrystalline chemical vapour deposited diamond sensors that are suitable for time of flight measurements of heavy ions at relativistic velocities. Sensors were prepared both in house, with Al or Au metal contacts, and commercially fabricated with Au/diamond-like carbon contacts. He, Ar and a mixture of Ne and O beams at 16.3, 33.5 and 21-23 MeV/u, respectively were used on these devices whilst arranged in transmission geometry. Signal processing only began over one meter away from the sensors. The present approach, where we have large-area/large capacitance multi-strip detectors with processing electronics at some distance from the target, is compatible with anticipated space limitations in particle- identification and tracking setups at existing and planned nuclear fragmentation facilities. In a systematic study under these conditions, we demonstrate that the time resolution is limited by detector capacitance and energy deposition in the sensors. An intrinsic time resolution σ = (44±5) ps was achieved for a diamond detector of ∼ 14 pF capacitance. We conclude that, once further refinements are made, a large area time of flight detection system using polycrystalline diamond detectors would be able to provide time resolutions better than 40 ps, approaching the requirement for particle-identification in relativistic fragmentation experiments, such as those at the facility for antiproton and ion research, FAIR. © 2012 IOP Publishing Ltd and Sissa Medialab srl.

Abstract

An experiment has been performed by the R3B collaboration aiming at the investigation of light neutron-rich nuclei utilizing kinematically complete measurements of reactions at relativistic energies with the R3 B-LAND reaction setup at Cave C. The physics topics to be studied comprise the measurement of astrophysical reaction rates relevant for r-process nucleosynthesis using heavy-ion induced electromagnetic excitation and quasi-free knockout reactions to study the evolution of shell and cluster structures close to and beyond the dripline.

Abstract

A compact, quasi-4 pi position sensitive silicon array. TIARA, designed to study direct reactions induced by radioactive beams in inverse kinematics is described here. The Transfer and Inelastic All-angle Reaction Array (TIARA) consists of 8 resistive charge division detectors forming an octagonal barrel around the target and a set of double-sided silicon-strip annular detectors positioned at each end of the barrel. The detector was coupled to the gamma-ray array EXOGAM and the spectrometer VAMOS at the GANIL Laboratory to demonstrate the potential of such an apparatus with radioactive beams. The N-14(d,p)N-15 reaction, well known in direct kinematics, has been carried out in inverse kinematics for that purpose. The observation of the N-15 ground state and excited states at 7.16 and 7.86 MeV is presented here as well as the comparison of the measured proton angular distributions with DWBA calculations. Transferred l-values are in very good agreement with both theoretical calculations and previous experimental results obtained in direct kinematics.

Abstract

International audience; The two nuclei 12Be and 14Be have been studied using breakup reactions on p, 12C and 208Pb targets. The decay of 12Be into two helium clusters (6He+6He and 4He+8He) was observed from a series of excited states between 10 and 25 MeV, with spins in the range 4+ to 8+. The single neutron angular distributions for 14Be exhibit the narrow forward peak characteristic of a halo. The widths of these distributions in coincidence with 12Be fragments are ΓL = 78±6 and 80±1 MeV/c for breakup on carbon and lead.

Abstract

International audience; The reaction 11Be(p,d)10Be has been studied for the first time, using a secondary 11Be beam of 35.3 MeV/nucleon. Angular distributions up to about 15cmo were measured by detecting 10Be in a spectrometer and coincident deuterons in a position sensitive silicon detector array. Preliminary analysis provides evidence for a large core excitation component in the structure of 11BeGS.
