Introduction We report the case of a patient who developed a severe post-exertional heat stroke with consecutive multiple organ dysfunction resistant to conventional antipyretic treatment, necessitating the use of a novel endovascular device to combat hyperthermia and maintain normothermia. Methods A 38-year-old male suffering from severe heat stroke with predominant signs and symptoms of encephalopathy requiring acute admission to an intensive care unit, was admitted to a ten-bed neurological intensive care unit of a tertiary care hospital. The patient developed consecutive multiple organ dysfunction with rhabdomyolysis, and hepatic and respiratory failure. Temperature elevation was resistant to conventional treatment measures. Aggressive intensive care treatment included forced diuresis and endovascular cooling to combat hyperthermia and maintain normothermia. Results Analyses of serum revealed elevation of proinflammatory cytokines (TNF alpha, IL-6), cytokines (IL-2R), anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-4) and chemokines (IL-8) as well as signs of rhabdomyolysis and hepatic failure. Aggressive intensive care treatment as forced diuresis and endovascular cooling (CoolGard® and CoolLine®) to combat hyperthermia and maintain normothermia were used successfully to treat this severe heat stroke. Conclusion In this case of severe heat stroke, presenting with multiple organ dysfunction and elevation of cytokines and chemokines, which was resistant to conventional cooling therapies, endovascular cooling may have contributed significantly to the reduction of body temperature and, possibly, avoided a fatal result.

Apoptotic cell death plays an important role in the cascade of neuronal degeneration after traumatic brain injury (TBI), but the underlying mechanisms are not fully understood. However, increasing evidence suggests that expression of Fas and its ligand (FasL) could play a major role in mediating apoptotic cell death in acute and chronic neurologic disorders. To further investigate the temporal pattern of Fas and FasL expression after experimental TBI in the rat, male Sprague Dawley rats were subjected to unilateral cortical impact injury. The animals were killed and examined for Fas and FasL protein expression and for immunohistologic analysis at intervals from 15 minutes to 14 days after injury. Increased Fas and FasL immunoreactivity was seen in the cortex ipsilateral to the injury site from 15 minutes to 72 hours after the trauma, respectively. Immunohistologic investigation demonstrated a differential pattern of Fas and FasL expression in the cortex, respectively: increased Fas immunoreactivity was seen in cortical astrocytes and neurons from 15 minutes to 72 hours after the injury. In contrast, increased expression of FasL was seen in cortical neurons, astrocytes, and microglia from 15 minutes to 72 hours after impact injury. Concurrent double-labeling examinations using terminal deoxynucleotidyl tranferase-mediated deoxyuridine-biotin nick end labeling identified Fas- and FasL-immunopostive cells with high frequency in the cortex ipsilateral to the injury site. In contrast, there was no evidence of Fas- and FasL-immunopositive cells in the hippocampus ipsilateral to the injury site up to 14 days after the trauma. Further, Fas and FasL immunoreactivity was absent in the contralateral cortex and hippocampus at all time points investigated. These results reveal induction of Fas and FasL expression in the cortex after TBI in the rat. Further, these data implicate an involvement of Fas and FasL in the pathophysiologic mechanism of apoptotic neurodegeneration after TBI. Last, these data suggest that strategies aimed to repress posttraumatic Fas- and FasL-induced apoptosis may open new perspectives for the treatment of TBI.

Aerial parts of Daphne pontica were collected from Ilgaz-Çankırı, and D. oleoides subsp. oleoides was collected from 2 different localities (Ayrancı-Karaman and Ilgaz-Çankırı) in Turkey. The samples were subjected to hydrodistillation and microdistillation. The resulting volatile samples were analyzed both by gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), respectively. The main components for D. pontica were identified as hexahydrofarnesyl acetone (8.6%), carvacrol (8.5%), dihydroedulane II (4.7%), (E)-geranyl acetone (4.6%), and thymol (4.5%), while nonacosane (42.5% and 27.2%), hexadecanoic acid (24.4% and 20.0%), phytol (12.3%), and carvacrol (5.0%) were identified as the main components of D. oleoides subsp. oleoides obtained by hydrodistillation. Carvacrol (12.0%), thymol (7.7%), dihydroactinidiolide (7.2%), bicyclosesquiphellandrene (5.5%), and (Z)-3-hexenal (4.1%) were the major components in D. pontica, while carvacrol (27.2% and 25.4%), nonacosane (24.6%), (Z)-3-hexenal (18.5% and 2.5%), decane (7.4%), hexahydrofarnesyl acetone (7.4% and 2.2%), hexanal (6.6% and 1.5%), heptacosane (6.1%), nonanal (5.6% and 1.9%), thymol (5.1% and 2.3%), and phytol (5.0%) were identified in the D. oleoides subsp. oleoides isolated by microdistillation, respectively. In addition, the volatile components were evaluated for their ability to scavenge 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radicals using a bioautographic thin layer chromatography (TLC) method, and the samples showed activity comparable with that of the tested standards, vitamins C and E.

Der erste Eindruck, dass die mit dem „Friedrichsgiebel“ beginnende Giebelreihe von St. Ste- phan eine gebaute Krone sein könnte, die „Erzherzogskrone“ von Rudolf IV. (1339-1365), wurde in dieser Arbeit überprüft. Da die Giebelreihe gleichzeitig ein Baukörper des hohen Dachs und der Fassade des Langhauses ist, wurden mögliche Vorbilder für das Hallendach mit Querdächern und die Maßwerkgiebel gesucht. Dabei ergab sich, dass die Elisabethkir- che in Marburg ursprünglich über jedem der fünf Joche des Hallenlanghauses ein zur Traufe abgewalmtes Querdach besaß. Diese „Coppen“, wir nennen sie Gauben oder Gaupen, erin- nerten mit ihren Zacken über der Dachtraufe bereits an eine Krone. Da auch die nachfolgen- den Deutschenordenskirchen von Mühlhausen in Thüringen, der Marienburg in Preußen (heute Polen) und wahrscheinlich auch die Kirche St. Elisabeth in Wien Maßwerkgiebel über der Fassade hatten, findet sich hier möglicherweise der Ausgangspunkt einer Entwicklungs- reihe bis zum „Friedrichsgiebel“ von St. Stephan in Wien. Wobei auf die sehr engen Bezie- hungen des Hauses Habsburg zum Deutschen Orden hinzuweisen ist. Thomas EBENDORFER berichtet in aller Kürze über den Neubau von St. Stephan, seinen „ersten Meister“ unter Rudolf IV., bzw. die Turmabtragung wegen Abweichung von dessen ursprünglicher Planung. Meiner Meinung nach war der Grund für den Eingriff, der bei diesem Planwechsel vorgesehene Entfall der Giebelreihe bzw. des „Friedrichsgiebels“, eines ganz wesentlichen Details im „Gesamtplan“ des „ersten Meisters“. Die in Architektur umgesetzte „Erzherzogskrone“ dokumentierte den Bauwillen von Erzherzog Rudolf IV., dem Stifter. Den Plan legte er wahrscheinlich 1359 bei der Grundsteinlegung für die Erweiterung von St. Ste- phan vor. Die von Thomas EBENDORFER berichtete Turmabtragung fand möglicherweise 1404 statt und wurde sehr wahrscheinlich von den „Steirischen“ Herzogen Wilhelm und Leo- pold IV. veranlasst, welche großen Wert auf den Erzherzogstitel legten. Meister Michael (von Wiener Neustadt) wurde in der Literatur ab 1931 als Verfasser des „Gesamtplans“ von St. Stephan bezeichnet. Ab 1970 wurde dies vehement in Frage gestellt. Durch Überprüfung ergab sich, dass von einer exakten, auf Dokumente gestützten, Ermitt- lung des Geburtsjahres keine Rede sein kann. Wahrscheinlich hat Meister Michael 1359 für Herzog Rudolf IV. den Gesamtplan für St. Stephan in Wien entworfen. Da er auch Bauten in Wiener Neustadt für den Steirischen Herzog Leopold III. und Bauten in Laxenburg für den Österreichischen Herzog Albrecht III. errichtete, war er für drei Habsburger tätig und aus die- sem Grund bezeichnet man ihn zu Recht als Baumeister der Herzoge von Österreich. Vier gotische Originalpläne wurden bereits 1967 erstmals in den Kontext mit dem „Friedrichs- giebel“ gebracht. Diese für unser Thema so wesentliche Argumentation hat die nachfolgende 98 Literatur weder erwähnt, noch konnte man stichhaltige Beweise dagegen vorbringen, sie wurde einfach ignoriert ! Auf Basis gründlicher Planbesprechungen ergab sich, dass die An- gaben von Marlene ZYKAN zur Rekonstruktion des ursprünglichen Turmplans von Meister Michael, die Rückkehr zum Plan des „ersten Meisters“ und die Einfügung des „Friedrichsgie- bels“ in das abweichende Konzept des Wenzel Parler durch Peter von Prachatitz aus diesen Originalplänen herauszulesen sind.352 353 Die nachfolgende Literatur hat dieses Thema ge- mieden. Offenbar wollte man St. Stephan kein „rudolfinisches“ kein „vorparlerisches“ Kon- zept zugestehen. Man hat die mit dem „Friedrichsgiebel“ beginnende Giebelreihe, die doch so eindeutig den Bauwillen Erzherzog Rudolfs IV. ausdrückt, einfach ignoriert ! Der „Friedrichsgiebel“ wurde sicher fast gleichzeitig mit dem Beginn der Regierungszeit Friedrichs III. (1440-1493) errichtet. Dafür spricht dessen Verehrung für Rudolf IV., seine so- fortige Anerkennung des „Privilegium Majus“ und seine Wertschätzung des Erzherzogstitels. Das kann man daraus schließen, dass er sich 1453 auf der Wappenwand der Burg in Wiener Neustadt als Erzherzog darstellen ließ, obwohl er damals schon Römisch-Deutscher Kaiser war.354 Auch die Verwendung von „altertümlichen“ Maßwerkformen, welche an das Zister- zienserstift Salem denken lassen, wäre ein Indiz dafür. Der Kaiser wollte so bald als möglich und nach alten Plänen den Bauwillen seines Vorfahren Rudolf IV. verwirklichen, den von ihm vorgelegten „Gesamtplan“ und die mit dem „Friedrichsgiebel“ beginnende Giebelreihe als Symbol für die „Erzherzogskrone“., The first impression that the row of gables on St. Steven, starting with “Friedrich’s Gable” could be the deliberate construction of a crown, namely the crown of Archduke Rudolf IV (1339-1365), is examined in this study. As this row of gables forms part of the structures of the high roof as well as of the façade of the nave, a search for examples for a high roof of a hall type church, cross roofs and traceried gables was undertaken. It turned out that originally the Elisabeth Church in Marburg had similar cross roofs over each of the five bays of the ais- les which were hipped towards the eaves. These dormers were called “Coppen”, in German known as “Gauben” or “Gaupen”, with their spikes above the eaves evocating the appearan- ce of a crown. The fact that subsequently erected churches of the German Knights Order in Muehlhausen in Turingia, the Marienburg in Prussiana (today Poland), and possibly also the Church of St. Elisabeth in Vienna had traceried gables above the façade, may signify the starting point for an architectural trend, leading to “Friedrich’s Gable” of St. Steven. In this context it should be recalled that the House of Habsburg had entertained a very close rela- tionship with the German or Teutonic Knights Order. Thomas EBENDORFER reported briefly about the new construction of St. Steven and its “First Master” under Rudolf IV, and the partial dismantling of the (South) Tower because its construction deviated from the original planning. According to the author’s opinion, the rea- son for this intervention was the intended omission of the row of gables, including “Friedrich’s Gable”, which had been an essential detail of the “First Master’s” original overall plan (Ge- samtplan). The architectural realization of the Archduke’s crown conformed with „the will to build“ of Archduke Rudolf IV “The Founder”. Very plausibly he presented his plans at the oc- casion of laying the foundation stone for the enlargement of St. Steven in 1359. The partial dismantling of the(South) Tower reported by EBENDORFER took place in about 1404, pro- bably at the behest of the “Styrian” Dukes Wilhelm and Leopold IV, who placed great impor- tance in the rank and title Archduke. Master Michael (of Wiener Neustadt) was named in literature since 1931 as author of the overall plan (Gesamtplan) of St. Steven. As from 1970 onwards this thesis was vehemently questioned. The examination in this study brought up that the exact determination of Master Michael’s birthday was lacking any documentary evidence. Therefore, it remains highly pro- bable that in 1359 Master Michael designed the overall plan (Gesamtplan) of St. Steven for Archduke Rudolf IV. It should be recalled that he also built for the Styrian Duke Leopold III in Wiener Neustadt and for the Austrian Duke Albrecht III in Laxenburg. Having worked for three ruling Habsburgs he rightfully is called “Architect of the Dukes of Austria“. 111 For the first time in 1967, Marlene ZYKAN brought four original plans of the gothic period into context with the „Friedrich’s Gable“. Her essential argumentation for our topic was totally ignored in recent literature, nor does the latter contain any evidence to the contrary. On the basis of detailed discussions of the plans it became clear that the description by Marlene ZYKAN and the reconstruction of the South Tower according to the original plan by Master Michael, in other words: the return to the overall plan(Gesamtplan) of the “First Master” con- firmed the reintroduction of the “Friedrich’s Gable” by Peter von PRACHATITZ into Wenzel PARLER’s deviating concept..355 356 Subsequent literature has avoided this topic. Evidently, there was no interest in conceding a “Rudolfinian” or “Pre-Parlerian” conception for St. Ste- ven. The row of gables, starting with the “Friedrich’s Gable”, which so clearly demonstrate „the will to build“ of Archduke Rudolf IV, was just ignored. The “Friedrich’s Gable” was built certainly at the beginning of the reign of Emperor Friedrich III (1440-1493). Favoring this approximate date are Friedrich’s admiration for Rudolf IV, his immediate confirmation of the “Privilegium Majus”, and his high esteem for the title “Archdu- ke.” This can be deduced also from the fact that he had himself depicted in 1453 as Archdu- ke at the heraldic wall (Wappenwand) of the Castle in Wiener Neustadt, even though he was already Holy Roman Emperor at the time.357A further indication may be the use of antiquated tracery reminiscent of those in the Cisterciansian monastery of Salem. Evidently, the Empe- ror wanted to realize the architectural intentions of his ancestor Rudolf IV according to the original plan (Gesamtplan), including the row of gables starting with the “Friedrich’s Gable”, symbolizing the “Archduke’s Crown.”

Se describen nuevos afloramientos de la Formación Bajo Pobre hallados en el sector oriental del Macizo del Deseado, provincia de Santa Cruz, Patagonia Argentina. Esta unidad, junto con el Grupo Bahía Laura, corresponden al evento más importante magmático-piroclástico del Jurásico medio a superior del Macizo del Deseado. Se trata de lavas melanocráticas porfíricas a afaníticas, con fenocristales de plagioclasa, piroxeno y ocasional biotita, en una pasta de textura intersertal con microlitos de plagioclasa, piroxeno, opacos y en ocasiones con olivina. Las plagioclasas son de composición An53 a An85 (labradorita a bitownita) y los piroxenos son augita (Wo39 En48 Fs13), y pigeonita (Wo11 En54 Fs35) en los microlitos de las rocas con olivina (Fo51-45 Fa49-55). Son rocas intermedias a básicas, de composición andesita basáltica a andesita y con afinidades calcoalcalinas. Se describen lavas de la Formación Bajo Pobre con relaciones estratigráficas infra y suprayacentes respecto de rocas volcánicas ácidas del Grupo Bahía Laura. En las andesitas basálticas suprayacentes al Grupo Bahía Laura se obtuvo una edad K-Ar en roca total de 151,3 ± 3,4 Ma y para las andesitas infrayacentes se asume una edad Ar-Ar en plagioclasa de 177 ± 4 Ma. Estos estudios corroboran la extensión de los afloramientos de la Formación Bajo Pobre hacia la región costera del Macizo del Deseado y la combinación de las observaciones estratigráficas y geocronológicas confirman la relación de coetaneidad y posible intercalación entre las lavas de la Formación Bajo Pobre y las volcanitas ácidas del Grupo Bahía Laura, avalando la bimodalidad del magmatismo jurásico en el Macizo del Deseado., New Bajo Pobre Formation outcrops found in the eastern sector of the Deseado Massif, Santa Cruz province, Patagonia, are described. This unit, together with the Bahía Laura Group, is the most important magmato-pyroclastic event of the Deseado Massif. They are melanocratic, porphyric to aphanitic lava flows, with plagioclase, pyroxene and occasionally biotite phenocrysts in an intersertal matrix with plagioclase, pyroxene, opaque and occasionally with olivine microlites. Plagioclases are An53 to An85 (labradorite – bytownite) and pyroxenes are augite (Wo39 En48 Fs13), and pigeonite microlites (Wo11 En54 Fs35) in the rocks with olivine (Fo51-45 Fa49-55) microlites. They are intermediate to basic rocks, basaltic andesite to andesite in composition with calc-alkaline affinities. Underlying and overlying stratigraphic relationships of the Bajo Pobre Formation lava flows with the Bahía Laura Group acid volcanics are described. In the basaltic andesites overlying the Bahía Laura Group it was determined a 151.3 ± 3.4 Ma whole-rock K-Ar age and an assumed plagioclase Ar-Ar age of 177 ± 4 Ma for the underlying andesitic rocks.
