Abstract

In this paper, we present preliminary scientific results obtained from the analysis of VIMS (Visible and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer) lunar images and spectra. These data were obtained during the Cassini Earth flyby in August 1999. Spectral ratios have been produced in order to derive lunar mineralogical maps. Some spectra observed at the north-east lunar limb, show few unusual absorption features located at 0.357, 0.430 and 0.452 ìm, the origin of which is presently unknown.

Abstract

[1] Starting from the recent discovery of chlorine ions in Io's plasma torus, we searched for evidence of Cl-bearing species at the surface of the satellite. We have identified Cl2SO2, with possible contribution by ClSO2, as candidates for the absorber(s) of the 3.92 μm band locally present in NIMS/Galileo spectra of the reddish deposits south of Marduk's volcanic center. Low-temperature laboratory measurements of the infrared spectra of several Cl and S-bearing molecules in the solid state, coupled with radiative transfer modeling, first allowed us to select four candidate molecules. Their abundance and stability at Io's surface have been tested through formation, condensation, and destruction scenarios using volcanic and atmospheric models completed with chemical and thermodynamical data. In particular, the sublimation rates of solid Cl2SO2 and SO2 have been measured to study the selective condensation of these species. Cl2SO2 diluted at ∼1% in a millimeter thick layer of solid SO2 is the favorite candidate for the 3.92 μm band. We strongly favor a formation process of this molecule by heterogeneous reaction of Cl atoms on SO2 ice condensing on plume particles or at Io's surface. The high Cl2SO2 abundance observed implies that a Cl-rich volcanic eruption ([Cl − (Na + K)]/S > 0.015) occurred at Marduk. ClSO2 is a potential additional contributor to the band. Pure H2S is safely discarded as it is extremely unstable at Io's surface but an upper limit of 0.01% is derived for H2S diluted in SO2. Finally, chemical constraints allow us to firmly exclude H2S2. We also suggest that Cl2S may be an alternative explanation for the reddish coloration of some volcanic deposits.

Abstract

After the correction for the instrumental effect, Mariner-9 IRIS data were analysed to retrieve water vapour abundance in the southern hemisphere in late summer. Seasonal, latitudinal and diurnal variability of water vapour is studied. The major detected effect is the diurnal peak of Hz0 abundance, which decreases during the period from L, =293’ to L, = 345”.

Abstract

PFS, a Fourier spectrometer for the study of the Martian atmosphere, will fly on Mars Express. For the first time the study of the 15 mm CO2 absorption band, which gives the vertical temperature-pressure profile, will be carried out simultaneously with the retrieval of the aerosols number density vertical profile using multi bands approach and using the measured ground pressure from the 2 mm CO2 absorption band. It will enable us to get the vertical structure of the Martian atmosphere, the water vapour column abundance and vertical distribution, and the vertical distribution of the dust. A comparison with all the previously flown spectrometers will be presented.

219. Martian winter atmosphere at north high latitudes: Mariner 9 IRIS data revisited

Abstract

Several hundred spectra were obtained at latitudes > 65N in late northern winter (Ls = 322° -352°). Solar zenith angles ranged from 75° to 125°; however most of these spectra were observed in polar darkness. The data reveal complex spectral features, including a complex shape in the 15 mm CO2 band. Temperature profiles and aerosol opacities were retrieved in a self- consistent way. Temperature profiles show an inversion in the lowest 5 km above the local surface(below 0 km altitude). At higher levels the temperature decreases with altitude, reaching a minimum at 10 - 20 km, in such a way that the altitude of the minimum increases with latitude; above that level the temperature increases again up to 40-50 km. At latitudes j 80N and in some cold areas at 70-80N.

The O+ parameters and the Ez component behavior are shown to be consistent with that expected from the topology of the electric field lines in the tail as mapped from the ionosphere. 238. Measurement of the potential drop across the earth's collisionless bow shock

Abstract

The normal component of the dc electric field measured on ISEE-1 ordinarily exhibits an enhancement of a few mV/m over both upstream and downstream values at the earth's bow shock. Using the measured relative velocity between the shock and the spacecraft (from the ISEE-1/2 time delay in the magnetometer data), it is possible to transform the observed E enhancement to a potential drop (delta phi). For a subcritical shock the potential drop is found to be very close to the measured change of particle kinetic energy (delta phi, approximately 280 V on day 330, 1977), whereas for a supercritical shock the potential drop is only a fraction of the measured change of kinetic energy (delta phi, approximately 140 V on day 324, 1977).

239. The fine structure of the front side magnetopause during two successive crossings

The magnetopause crossings of November 10, 1977, which are considered to be representative of a class of structures, are investigated, and a procedure is developed to derive approximate surface currents near the magnetopause from ISEE 1 magnetic field data by assuming a constant speed of the magnetopause along its normal for each crossing of the magnetopause layer. Changes in the magnetic field indicate that current sheets exist on each side of the magnetopause layer, which is characterized by an irregular magnetic field and a magnetosheath-like energy distribution. No boundary layer plasma is observed on the magnetospheric field lines inside the magnetopause, and electromagnetic energy is found to be dissipated at the two edges of the magnetopause layer where the current layers are observed.

240. A statistical study of the upstream wave boundary outside the earth's bow shock

Abstract

The location of the forward boundary of the upstream wave region ahead of the earth's bow shock is investigated statistically using plasma and magnetic-field data obtained by Heos 1. The analysis is conducted on the assumption that the waves are produced by protons reflected from the bow shock and traveling upstream with an effective velocity equal to the product of a parameter, p, and the solar-wind bulk velocity. The data-reduction methods are summarized, and uncertainties in the determination of the value of p are discussed. It is found that the overall average boundary corresponds to a velocity of approximately twice the solar-wind velocity for protons reflected from the daytime sector of the bow shock. More refined analysis of the data shows that the value of p is approximately 1.6 near the subsolar point and greater than 2 along the daytime flanks of the bow shock.

241. Collisionless shock waves in space - A very high beta structure

Measurements from six OGO-5 particle and field experiments are used to examine the structure of the earth's bow shock during a period of extremely high beta (the ratio of plasma thermal to magnetic energy density), as determined from simultaneous measurements of the upstream plasma on board the HEOS satellite. Even though the interplanetary field is nearly perpendicular to the shock normal, the shock is extremely turbulent. Large field increases are observed up to a factor of 20 above the upstream values. Ahead of these large enhancements, smaller magnetic effects accompanied by electrostatic noise, electron heating, and ion deflection are observed for several minutes. These observations suggest that a steady-state shock may not be able to form at very high beta. Further, they show that while the magnetic energy density may be relatively unimportant in the upstream flow, it can become very significant within the shock structure, and hence the magnetic field should not be ignored in theoretical treatments of very high beta shocks.

242. Structure of the quasi-perpendicular laminar bow shock

It was found that low solar wind parameters M (less than or around 2.5) and beta (much less than 1) and high angles to the local shock normal, theta (greater than or around 65 deg), produced oblique laminar shock profiles as expected from theory, with marginal or vanishing upstream standing whistlers probably damped by acoustic or other plasma wave instabilities. The whistler mode appeared to dominate the electromagnetic spectrum. The laminar shock ramp thickness was several hundred kilometers and equal to (2-4)c/omega-pi. Composition of the shock as an accumulation of near-standing waves and an evidently reproducible varying flux pattern was discernible. Electron thermalization occurred early in, or just before, the magnetic ramp, while proton thermalization appeared to occur later in the ramp. Instantaneous shock velocities derived from the standing whistler wavelength were consistent with average velocities derived from the elapsed time estimates and were as high as 200 km/sec.

243. Evidence for magnetic field line reconnection in the solar wind

The basic scheme of Petschek's (1963) models for slow and fast magnetic reconnection in the solar wind is reviewed in order to determine what sort of results one would expect from satellite observations of possible reconnection processes. Data from HEOS 1 and OGO 5 are then analyzed, in which four observations of neutral sheet structures with large change of magnetic field direction were made. All four may be interpreted as indicating magnetic line reconnections rather than as D-sheets because they all show two distinct discontinuities which bound a lower magnetic field intensity region. The geometry of the magnetic field in the reconnection region appears to be similar to that described by Petschek. In one case the reconnection rate is in agreement with Petschek's prediction, but in the other three cases it is much larger than his limit. The reconnection rates observed do, however, agree with Sonnerup's (1972) limit.

A preliminary study is presented of two sets of data obtained by HEOS 1 and OGO 5 in the solar wind, which reveal the internal structure of two neutral sheets and their two-dimensional structure. HEOS 1 observations of the effects of the tearing mode instability in one of the sheets are described, including complicated structures connected with the sector boundary, sharp increases and decreases in the magnetic field intensity, and the presence of closed loops. HEOS 1 and OGO 5 observations of large oscillations due to plasma pressure imbalances are discussed, and it is concluded that an interchange instability may have been observed.

A thick quasi-parallel bow shock structure was observed on February 14, 1969, with field and particle detectors of both Heos 1 and Ogo 5. The typical magnetic pulsation structure was at least 1-2 R-E thick radially and was accompanied by irregular but distinct (average) plasma distributions characteristic of neither the solar wind nor the magnetosheath. There appeared to be a separate 'interpulsation' regime occurring between bursts of large amplitude oscillations. This regime was magnetically similar to the upstream wave region but was characterized by disturbed plasma flux and enhanced noise around the ion plasma frequency. The shock structure appeared to be largely of an oblique whistler type, probably complicated by counterstreaming high-energy protons.

The shock structure appeared to be largely of an oblique, whistler type, probably complicated by counterstreaming high energy protons.
