There are on-going research studies and discussions on concepts such as focus on form, focus on forms, and explicit and implicit instructions in foreign language teaching. Basically, foreign language teaching methods and techniques show similarities in teaching different languages, but it is considered beneficial to take into account the typological features of the languages while the concepts are being discussed. This study covers form-focused foreign language instructions and language typologies in order to evaluate and discuss the concept of focus on form in terms of languages featuring distinct typological features and emphasizes that more effective and productive learning environments can be created with form-focused instruction in teaching Turkish as a foreign language. This article presents a two-semester study that examines the effectiveness of threaded discussions for foreign language teaching methods courses. In particular, this study focuses on how students view the role of asynchronous computer-mediated communication in the development of language pedagogy through an exchange with expert teachers from secondary schools. The author gathered data from 32 students who participated in weekly discussion boards, wrote monthly reflective logs, filled out surveys, and joined group interviews. The findings demonstrated that online discussions promoted scaffolding by which expert teachers assisted students in creating reflective messages. In addition, threaded discussions fostered learners' autonomy and accountability while supporting collaborative learning through social interaction. The study suggests three essential ingredients to maximize the potential benefits of discussion board for language teacher training: (1) use of carefully designed tasks that engage critical thinking, (2) scaffolding strategies for monitoring group discussions, and (3) inclusion of online etiquette to avoid confusion and reduce personal conflicts. This article presents information on a case study designed to explore the effectiveness of full-scale, authentic-text theater production for second language learning. Many aspects of foreign language theater production make it an effective means of teaching a foreign language and encouraging the continued study of the language and its culture. It involves students in a variety of communicative tasks on a daily basis throughout the numerous phases of production, auditions, rehearsals, textual analysis and discussion, set and costume preparation, performances, and post performance reflections. The Italian Theater Workshop (ITW) was a pilot study aiming to explore the various types of interaction and modes of communication that could take place between members of a foreign language theatrical troupe-actors, stage managers, designers, and directors. Drama techniques have comprised an important aspect of foreign language teaching methods for several decades. Generally speaking, teachers, researchers, textbook writers, and students alike find drama techniques beneficial because they provide learners with opportunities to speak in less controlled and more creative ways.

In the process of studying the Ukrainian language as a foreign language, Chinese students experience the greatest difficulties in learning the phonetic aspect of the language, which is due to significant differences between the typologically distant Chinese and Ukrainian languages. The study analyzed the peculiarities of the Ukrainian language from the point of view of teaching phonetics to students from China, and identified typical phonetic errors of Chinese students in the pronunciation of Ukrainian sounds. In order to methodically justify the selection of phonetic material, a comparative analysis of the phonetic systems of the Chinese literary (Putonghua) and Ukrainian languages was carried out, which made it possible to identify difficulties in teaching the Chinese to pronounce Ukrainian, which are caused by the peculiarities of the Chinese language, and to classify the pronunciation of Ukrainian sounds according to the difficulty of assimilation in comparison with Chinese sounds. The Curriculum for the phonetic course of the Ukrainian language for Chinese students and the methodological tools for its implementation are presented. The results of the conducted research and pedagogical experiment testify to the effectiveness of the developed nationally oriented method of studying the phonetics of the Ukrainian language by Chinese students based on taking into account the differences between the two languages. LANGUAGE teachers ,TEACHING methods ,FOREIGN language education - Abstract
Until recently, the question of the methodological role in the professional activity of a teacher, depending on the peculiarities of the performed functions, has remained unexplored. Also, a number of urgent problems have not been fully studied. What is the actual connection between teaching methodology and methodology? What is the influence of methodology on teaching methodology? How can methodology help teachers while implementing their multifunctional professional tasks? This study can be divided into several stages: identification of the connection between the general methodology of teaching foreign languages and methodology (the first stage of the research); clarification of the main directions of the methodological function implementation of the theory of teaching foreign languages (second stage of the research); specifying the conditions of the successful implementation of the methodological function of teaching foreign languages theory (third stage of the research). The study not only reveals the connections between teaching methodology with methodology, but also identifies the prospects for the development of methodological thought in relation to the professional training of foreign language teachers. This prospect is closely related to the methodological function of teaching methodology. The implementation of the present function is aimed at the research, reconstruction and description of certain methods and value-based objects of language education as well as methodological reflection of scientific research conducted within the framework of the given study and the educational activity. The consideration of the teaching methodology from the point of view of methodology allows us to reveal the content and direction of the methodological function realisation within the given science as well as to provide arguments for the significance of its inclusion into the scientific vocabulary of such categories as ‘methodological consciousness’ and ‘methodological culture’. The current study investigated the effect of EFL teachers' dialogic interactions on their online professional development (OPD). For this purpose, a group of 3 experienced and 5 novice teachers participated in the study. After the analysis of the teachers' written reflective narratives and interviews, the most significant themes of the teachers' OPD were found and categorized. Results showed that dialogic interaction navigated the teachers' OPD, but in different directions. Whereas the novice teachers exhibited a tendency toward more behaviorally oriented trajectories of development, the experienced teachers were more attitudinally and cognitively invested in the OPD process. This study invites teacher education programs and teacher educators to capitalize on dialogic interaction as a resource to promote teachers' OPD and to support the personalized and professional needs of teachers at different developmental stages. The question of text perception in a foreign language is considered. Cognitive operations to build a text projection used by recipients who are non-native speakers, as well as their ways to objectify the former in their own secondary texts of the fanfiction genre are presented and described. The article is relevant due to the need to research the processes of reception and production of a coherent text both in native and foreign languages, and to create a cognitive model of the text projection building process. Particular attention is paid to the correlations between the strategies and tactics of forming a projection of a text in a foreign language by the recipient with the types of cognitive operation used to interpret new knowledge (preservation, modeling, transfiguration). Data are given on the implementation of cognitive operations on all levels of the perceived text (macro-, schematic, stylistic level). Definitions are provided for the specific tactics used by recipients (non-native speakers) in the process of creating their own texts in a foreign language on various levels (plot preservation tactics, tropes imitation tactics, keyword transplantation tactics, etc.). The results of the study can be applied both in the field of language sciences (psycholinguistics, linguistics) and in the field of foreign language teaching methods to find ways to effectively develop reading and writing skills in language learners.

In this study, we aimed to determine the role of visual speech cues in the process of foreign language learning by hearing school-age children. Our experiments used Cued Speech, a method designed for people who are deaf or hard of hearing. We expected that the principles of the method might also be beneficial for people with normal hearing because they may help distinguish the sounds of foreign speech that are difficult to hear. This study mainly focused on the effects of speech perception. We tested 126 Polish junior high school students (66 girls and 60 boys) with a normal range of phonemic hearing and language aptitude. We envisaged that foreign language learners using visual speech cues would achieve a higher score on a test of foreign language than learners who had studied the language in the traditional manner. We also formulated a hypothesis concerning the interaction of training type and training conditions on the effectiveness of foreign language learning: that the difference in the effects of foreign language learning between participants who received visual or executive training and typical training would be more significant in the presence of auditory distractors than in their absence. We observed interactions between conditions and types of training for speech sound identification. Under conditions of auditory distraction, foreign language learners using Cued Speech scored significantly higher than learners who had traditional training. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article is devoted to considering podcast advertising as a means of monetizing. The podcast advertising types are characterized. An analysis of the domestic experience of using podcasts for advertising purposes was carried out. The purpose of the article is to consider the main types of podcast advertising and analyse their use in the Ukrainian segment of the media market. Podcasts of Radio NV, Suspilny, "The Ukrainians", "Ukrainian Pravda" have been analysed. Content analysis of podcasts was chosen as the main research method to identify the types of advertising used in domestic podcasts. The main characteristics of the classification of podcast advertisements and the types that are distinguished within these characteristics have been established. It was found that Ukrainian podcasts most often use self-promotion, but there are isolated cases of partnership and sponsorship (usually at the end of the podcast) and mentions that can be identified as native advertising. It was concluded that it is too early to talk about the monetization of podcasts thanks to advertising as a mass phenomenon, it is rather an exception to the rule than a regularity. An effective way of interacting with the audience is thematic projects and those ones, which are designed for a specific brand, which is their sponsors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

ENGLISH as a foreign language ,TEACHING methods ,CURRICULUM planning ,SCHOOL environment - Abstract
The Communicative Approach is believed to be the most successful current foreign or second language teaching method. Because of the need for development, using the Communicative Approach in the EFL classrooms in Albania, and incorporating it into the curriculum design is extremely beneficial, but establishing a climate conducive to the best learning and ensuring the desired results is quite complex and time consuming. Students are accustomed to being taught utilizing traditional teaching techniques in the challenging Albanian educational environment. Teachers must, however, move away from conventional approaches and toward more modern ones, such as the Communicative Approach. As a result, the focus will be on the learners' language requirements and assisting instructors in achieving their objectives. However, because more contact and engagement in class can lead to a significant increase in students' conversation time, this practice necessitates the use of effective classroom management measures. The purpose of this research is to see how the Communicative Approach may help students improve their communication skills. It addresses some of the issues and provides recommendations for successful application within the Albanian curriculum. Furthermore, it is hoped that the Communicative Approach would not only be presented as a positive approach regarding teaching and learning process, but that it will also equip educators and curriculum developers with some practical methods and processes for putting Communicative Language Teaching into practice. It is often assumed that colonial administrators across North Africa were involved, explicitly or implicitly, in the suppression of fuṣḥā (classical Arabic). This paper adds nuance to such generalisations by examining debates over Arabic language pedagogy during the French protectorate in Morocco. Drawing on official correspondence and internal notes exchanged between the Direction de l'instruction publique (DIP) and local school administrators, this article shows that, far from disregarding Arabic as a school subject, French colonial administrators actively attempted to reform and modernise Arabic language pedagogy by drawing on European pedagogical methodologies and new trends in foreign language teaching. I argue that these overlooked pedagogical reforms radically, if unintentionally, reframed classical Arabic from a divinely privileged language offering unique access to knowledge about the world, to merely one language amongst others, a token of a type, in need of being taught according to the universal rules of language pedagogy. In doing so, I suggest that protectorate-era Arabic classes in DIP-run schools helped lay the foundation for postcolonial debates over Arabisation and the status of Arabic dialects. Grasping varying purposes of English in scientific publications has become a critical point for many scholars (Cargill & Burgess, 2017). The present study examines the attitudes of Indonesian university teachers towards writing scholarly works in English for publication. It also explored whether teachers' perceptions varied based on gender and specific areas of expertise (English and non-English). Applying the convenience sampling technique, this research included 50 lecturers from public and private institutions in North Sumatra, Indonesia, separated into EFL and non-EFL instructors. Additionally, the participants were split into male and female subgroups. A survey method was utilized to collect the data, and SPSS version 23.0 was adopted to analyze the data. The findings demonstrated that the instructors had a favorable outlook on publishing scholarly works in English. Although there were no statistically substantial distinctions in responses between female and male lecturers or English and non-English lecturers, gender and their area of expertise in education influenced their views on the necessity of authoring academic papers in English for publication. Given that attitude strongly influences whether or not a person will change their behaviour, the degree to which a person has a positive attitude about writing may have a bearing on how effectively they write. Therefore, academics' constructive stances in composing journal articles must be bolstered. Such ideals can be accomplished through hands-on activities such as actual writing practices and participation in academic writing seminars and workshops. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The use of mother tongue to teach a second language has been a controversial issue in the field of second language acquisition. This study aims to compare the effectiveness of using mother tongue (Vietnamese) to teach a foreign language (English) under the pressure of the implementation of an English-only policy at the tertiary level in Vietnam where English is taught as a foreign language. The mixed-methods approach was conducted to contrast the perspectives of 11 teachers participating in semi-structured interviews, and 255 students answering 5-point Likert scale questionnaires. These research instruments were carefully designed by the researchers adopting the factual and behavioural criteria proposed by Dörnyei and Taguchi (2009). The results show that the minimal use of Vietnamese is utilized as a necessary pedagogical tool to teach English. The empirical results propose that the English-only policy can be effective if the actions such as more English learning time, English entry tests, English materials and teaching aids with techno-facilities are seriously taken into consideration. To adopt the English-only policy in EFL classes, school administrators have to renovate the foreign language regulations while teachers must adapt their teaching methodology to meet the requirements of the learner-centered approaches. The current study intended to have a brief understanding-based analysis of the Chinese university students' understanding of the traditional Chinese classroom teaching method and the PAD classroom teaching method to investigate the feasibility and efficiency of the two teaching methods in the Chinese university students' College English classes. Through applying a quantitative research design using the descriptive approach, questionnaires were distributed to thirty Chinese university students. The current study had revealed that the PAD classroom teaching method was much more favorable than the traditional Chinese classroom teaching method by most of the Chinese university students in their College English classes. Thus, the implication of the current study was that the PAD classroom teaching method was strongly suggested to be given more opportunities to be applied and practiced by the teachers in the Chinese university students' College English classes. Computer-aided language learning (CALL) is a teaching model in which the computer is used as a course tool in foreign language teaching. After the Second World War, with the introduction of the computer into our lives, the idea that these tools could be used for educational purposes emerged and these tools began to be used in educational environments. Language learning is one of the fields that benefit from computers. Because computers have features that can meet the needs of language learning with the content they offer. As a matter of fact, computers have started to be used in language learning classes. Achieving the desired success from computers depends on many different factors, but it is not possible not to gain success by using these tools with appropriate methods and techniques within the framework of teaching theories. For this reason, it is necessary to know well what the theoretical foundations of language learning activities carried out with computers are based on. In this study, computer-aided language learning is considered within the framework of teaching theories and the relationships between them are explored. In this way, it is aimed to contribute to course activities to be prepared based on teaching theories in computer-aided language learning. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article under discussion focuses on scientific works, dedicated to the development of language teaching methods. We have analysed the criteria for singling out the stages of contemporary scholars’ methods of development and created our own criteria regarding language teaching methods in Western Ukraine (1867-1939). According to the selected criteria, we have determined the basic stages of development methods on a particular territory, in a specific chronological framework: stage I – 1867–1890 – the emergence of the language teaching methods; stage II – 1890–1918 – the formation of foreign language teaching methods; stage III – 1918–1939 – further development of language teaching methods. These stages have been marked with certain innovative ideas of foreign language teaching approaches. They have also set certain scientific practice standards and theoretical postulates, preserving, at the same time, the teaching theories, concepts, approaches, principles, foreign language teaching methods, accepted by the professional community. Certain approaches to curricula development, in accordance with the peculiarities of each region, some principles of creating the educational materials, regarding the students’ age and interests, are inherent to each phase of the development of Linguistic Didactics in Western Ukraine. In our studies, we have proved that grammar translation, textual translation, direct and mixed methods of foreign language teaching have been implemented in accordance with the characteristic features of the outlined area and within the fixed chronological frames. We have highlighted the provisions of foreign language teaching methods that have remained unchangeable in the process of foreign language teaching in Western Ukraine. The latter methods have acquired new features and emerged in foreign language teaching methods on Western Ukrainian territories during their implementation within a specified period of time.

- Abstract
While discussions about the appropriate age of learning a second language are going on, as in many developed countries, in our country also, children are taught foreign languages starting from kindergarten. In foreign language learning, to hear the correct pronunciation of the speech sounds and words by means of audio-visual devices, to be able to repeat them, and know the culture of the target language is very important. In that case, the role of cartoons in foreign language learning is an important issue which needs to be addressed. In this study, the role of cartoons in learning a foreign language of children has been investigated. In this context, the age of foreign language learning and foreign language teaching methods have been considered theoretically; which type of cartoons are more effective and useful in foreign language learning at an early age has tried to be identified., İkinci dil öğrenme yaşına ilişkin tartışmalar sürerken, birçok gelişmiş ülkede olduğu gibi ülkemizde de anaokulundan itibaren yabancı dil öğretimi gerçekleştirilmektedir.

The present research tried to prompt self-regulated learning, autonomy, and self-efficacy of EFL learners through authentic assessment in Iranian EFL classrooms. To do so, 57 Iranian EFL learners were chosen and assigned to two equal groups; the Experimental Group (CG) and the Control Group (CG). Then, three questionnaires were administered to assess the respondents' self-regulated learning, autonomy, and self-efficacy before doing the treatment. After that, the EG received the treatment via using authentic assessments whereas the CG received the instruction through non-authentic assessments. After teaching 15 English passages to both groups, three post-tests were administered to them to determine the effects of the treatment on their self-regulated learning, autonomy, and self-efficacy. Lastly, the attitude questionnaire was given to the EG students to assess their attitudes toward implementing authentic assessments in EFL classes. The outcomes of ANCOVA revealed that there were significant differences between the post-tests of the EG and the CG. The results displayed that the EG noticeably outdid the CG in self-regulated learning, autonomy, and self-efficacy post-tests. In addition, the results showed that the EG held a positive attitude toward using authentic assessment in EFL classes. It can be concluded that applying authentic assessment in EFL classes can bring about constructive impacts for EFL learners. The findings of this investigation can be extremely valuable for EFL teachers and material designers to consider the impacts of authentic assessments and invest more in using these sorts of assessments. This research aims to identify grammatical errors made by the students of the English Literature department of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan and to describe the process of the occurrence of grammatical errors. This research is a descriptive study that uses a qualitative method. The data are the writing assignments of second-semester students of the English Literature department of Universitas Ahmad Dahlan of the 2018 - 2019 academic year. The researcher read the writings of the students, then wrote and classified the errors made by the students into types of errors due to interlingual and intralingual transfers. This research uses the descriptive analysis method to describe the types of errors. The results show that the types of errors due to the interlingual and intralingual transfer are omission errors, addition errors, misordering errors, and misformation errors. The results of this study are expected to be the basis for minimizing grammatical errors in the English teaching and learning process, especially for writing in English. The results can also be used as a basis for compiling course materials, writing textbooks or modules, especially for making exercises that focus on errors that often occur, to prevent similar errors that will occur in the future. In an era where the English language has become dominant in all fields and is the prevailing language worldwide, many Arab parents and intellectuals are wondering about the optimal age to start teaching their children English. Should they speak to their children in English at an early age? Should they enrol their children in a pre-school that teaches English only? What is the effect of teaching English to children in kindergarten on their learning of Arabic and their academic achievement in later stages? This study aimed to survey the opinions of a sample of mothers regarding the teaching of English to young children. The results of interviews with a sample of 300 mothers representing all segments of society showed that 70% of the mothers believe that the best age to teach children English is between four and five years old. 70% prefer to enrol their children in a kindergarten that teaches English, and 50% prefer to use a mix of English and Arabic languages when speaking with their children at home. About 70% believe that teaching English to children at an early age has no negative effect on their learning of Arabic simultaneously and has a positive effect on their academic achievement in later stages of education. The study also revealed some misconceptions among mothers about the optimal age for learning English, the effect of learning English on young children's Arabic language skills and academic achievement, and that the reason weakness of junior and senior high school students in English is due to not studying English at an early age. The researcher reviewed the results of previous studies on children and first and second language acquisition in several countries around the world acquiring a second foreign language alongside their mother tongue, the impact of learning a second language on their learning and acquisition of their mother tongue, academic achievement, and factors that lead to successful foreign language learning. This study aims to identify the factors influential in academic achievement in learning English. The study was conducted with the participation of 522 students who were the ninth, tenth and eleventh graders in an Anatolian High school located in Ankara city centre. The research data were collected with the Turkish version of personal and academic self-concept inventory (PASCI-Fleming & Whalen, 1984) and of strategy inventory for language learning (SILL-Oxford, 1990) (Cesur & Fer, 2007). The data were then analysed through bivariate correlation coefficient and multiple linear regression analysis. As a result, significant correlations were found between academic achievement in English and all sub-factors of learning strategies and of academic self-concept (p<.01). It was found that all the variables analysed (gender as male students, grade 11 as class variable, language learning strategies, academic self) predicted 42% of the variance in academic achievement in English. In the study, it was found that cognitive, compensatory and metacognitive strategies which are language learning strategies positively predicted English academic achievement while affective strategies predicted negatively. In the academic self-dimension of the study, it was found that academic ability and family acceptance positively predicted academic success in English while physical appearance and social anxiety predicted negatively. HERITAGE language speakers ,COMMUNITIES ,CLASSROOM environment ,EDUCATORS - Abstract
There is a foreign language deficit in the US – not only do Americans tend to speak only English, but US students do not always have the opportunity to learn additional languages, including heritage or family languages. On the other hand, most Americans have a heritage language in their background, and 70M in the US speak another language in the home. Independent learning is an important element in effectively addressing the foreign language deficit both in terms of Anglophone Americans learning additional languages and of heritage language speakers maintaining and re-acquiring their heritage language(s). This article examines how, in the classroom and beyond, language educators can play a valuable role in empowering and supporting independent self-directed learners to learn another language and in developing sustainable environments for language use in the home, community, and workplace. In addition, it is necessary to work to increase the accessibility and affordability of language learning so that those who are not in the educational system, especially adult learners, have access to learning new languages, including heritage languages. It is equally – and perhaps even more – important that parents and communities are supported in their efforts to maintain their family language and ensure that their children have an opportunity to learn and use their family language. Language educators can also work to develop materials for language learning freely accessible to all as well as opportunities for the use of different languages in their institutions and communities, as well as in the workplace. - Abstract
The past decades have witnessed the rise and boom of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL). As this dual-focused pedagogical approach continues to grow with remarkable vitality and sustainability, however, there is a paucity of knowledge regarding its development and application in China, necessitating a systematic review of previous research to apprise the academia of what has been done in the education and research agenda of CLIL. Grounded in four databases (i.e., Web of Science, Scopus, Education Resources Information Center, and Google Scholar), 28 research articles were extracted from 2013 to 2022 with certain exclusion and inclusion criteria considered. Thematic analyses primarily demonstrated that: (1) most studies were conducted in higher education providers, with English being the predominant instructional language; (2) diverse subject matters were embraced, denoting the coordination of "self" and "other" intercultural identities; (3) affective evidence concerning perceptions of CLIL and performance evidence regarding language learning outcomes tended to be the research nuclei, de-emphasizing the other research topics (e.g., assessment, translanguaging, heterogeneity in learning, learning materials, learning process); (4) the research findings were various, with most of them corroborating the benefits of CLIL to different aspects of learning; (5) CLIL learners were the principal source of data, and diverse research paradigms were displayed with appropriate designs as per the research objectives. These findings, by comparison with the knowledge and experience obtained from the Western world, imply that the scope of the CLIL agenda should be extended and deepened in China, encouraging educators and researchers to consider and probe a wider range of issues of interest.
