203. How different amounts of leaves added during the extraction process affect the biochemical composition of Chemlaliolive oil cultivar?

Abstract

Olive leaves are rich in antioxidant compounds. During harvest, they reached about 10% of the total weight which can affect the olive oil quality. So, this work aimed to study the effect of adding different amounts of leaves (1, 2, 5, 10 and 20%) during the olive oil extraction of cv. Chemlali. Changes in physico-chemical indices, oil stability, fatty acid composition, antioxidant contents and volatile composition were evaluated. The obtained olive oils with the addition of less than 10% leaves were classified as Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO). Polyphenols and bitterness index were the highest for treatments with addition of less than 10% leaves. Twenty-nine volatile compounds were identified. Total aldehydes and C6 compounds, responsible of the positive attributes, were the most abundant and were strongly affected by the addition of leaves. Olive oils with 2 and 5% added leaves were rich with aldehydes responsible of green and fruity flavor and in polyphenols.

Abstract

In this work, in order to explore a new Algerian medicinal plant used in traditional medicine, the essential oil of the leaves of Cachrys sicula L. (Apiaceae) collected from Algeria, obtained by hydrodistillation, was analyzed by GC/MS. Thirty-two compounds were identified accounting for 98.6% of the total oil, which is characterized by a high content of monoterpene hydrocarbons (74.8%). The main constituents of the essential oil were β-pinene (17.9%), sabinene (17.8%), myrcene (12%), and α-pinene (11.4%). In vitro antioxidant activity of the essential oil was assayed by three methods, namely ABTS•+, metal chelating, and DPPH• assays. The antioxidant activity of the oil was higher in the ABTS•+ method. Anticholinesterase activity was screened by the Ellman method against acetylcholinesterase (AChE) and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) which are the chief enzymes of Alzheimer's disease. The results showed mild acetylcholinesterase and good butyrylcholinesterase inhibitory effects. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The present study focused on the comparison the chemical composition of virgin olive oil samples obtained from fruits of the main Tunisian olive cultivar (Chemlali) grown in four planting densities (156, 100, 69, and 51 trees ha−1). Despite the variability in the triacylglycerols and volatile compounds composition, the quality indices (free fatty acids, peroxide value, and spectrophotometric indices K232 and K270) all of the virgin olive oils samples studied met the commercial standards. Decanal was the major constituent, accounting for about 30% of the whole volatiles. Moreover, the chemical composition of the volatile fraction of the oil from fruits of trees grown at the planting density of 156, 100, and 51 trees ha−1 was also characterised by the preeminence of 1-hexanol, while oils from fruits of trees grown at the planting density of 69 trees ha−1 had higher content of (E)-2-hexenal (20.3%). Our results confirm that planting density is a crucial parameter that may influence the quality of olive oils.

Abstract

Aroma is one of the essential parameters for the evaluation of fruit quality and consumer acceptance, with volatile components being determinant for this characteristic. During this work, the volatile profile of fresh fruits (pulp and peel) and leaves of Tunisian Ficus carica L. white (‘‘Bither Abiadh”, ‘‘Bidi”) and dark (‘‘Bither Kholi”, ‘‘Himri”, ‘‘Kholi” and ‘‘Tchich Asal”) varieties were characterised by GC and GC-MS. The major components detected among the volatiles of leaves were cedrol (38.9%), manoyl oxide (24.8%), α-terpineol acetate (21.7%), abietatriene (11.8%), γ-muurolene (7.4%), α-pinene (6.1%), pentadecanal (5.2%) and nonadecanal (2.3%). The major components detected in the volatiles of the fruits were cedrol (43.8%), α-terpinyl acetate (22.5%), manoyl oxide (12.9%), α-pinene (9.3%), abietadiene (8.1%),trans-calamenene (3.9%) and n-heneicosane (3.5%).The results suggest that the varieties could be distinguished on the basis of their volatile fractions composition.

Abstract

This work presents the volatile compounds and phenolic profile investigation of the leaves of Brassica oleracea L. growing in Tunisia, together with antioxidant and antibacterial properties. Volatile constituents were determined by HS-SPME coupled to GC/MS, and the results showed that α-pinene (31.6%) and limonene (16.9%) were the main volatiles. The phenolic profile was determined by HPLC analysis, the methanol extract revealed the presence of four hydroxycinnamic acids (chlorogenic, ferulic, p-coumaric and sinapic acids), two hydroxybenzoic acids (syringic and gallic acids), and four flavonoids (catechol, catechin hydrate, epigallocatechin and epicatechin 3-O-gallate). The methanol extract showed the best significantly antiradical activity by DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) and ABTS ((2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)) antioxidant assays, with EC50 of 0.32 and 0.45 mg/mL, respectively. For antibacterial activity, the methanol extract inhibits all the tested strains. It can be concluded that kohlrabi leaves are rich in bioactive compounds and are a potential source of natural antioxidants and antibacterials. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The hydrodistilled essential oils from eighteen samples of Salvia rosmarinus Spenn. collected in six localities of Elba Island (Tuscany, Italy) during three different seasonal periods were analyzed by GC-MS for the first time. Fifty-five components were identified, representing 96.8–99.6% of the total chemical composition. All the tested essential oils were characterized by a high content of monoterpenes (oxygenated 49.2–80.3%; hydrocarbons 18.7–48.3%). Among them, 1,8-cineole (26.4–49.1%), α-pinene (4.5–34.8%), camphor (1.1–18.8%) and borneol (1.7–16.2%) were the main constituents. The high amount of 1,8-cineole/α-pinene/camphor/borneol may suggest the presence of an intermediate rosemary chemotype. Statistical analysis was also performed on the essential oil (EO) composition evidenced an expected difference depending on the collection seasons, to the geographical areas and soil composition. A comparison with the essential oil composition from S. rosmarinus collected in all the other islands of Tuscan Archipelago (Italy) was also reported, together with a Multivariate Statistical Analysis.
