Abstract

Relaxin is a substance that is found in breast milk and in the blood during and just after pregnancy. Relaxin is thought to help the dilation of the cervix during delivery. Although the source and role of relaxin in the breast is not understood, it is thought to be involved in the development of breast tissue. There is speculation that relaxin is synthesized in the breast milk for use by the breast tissue itself. Measurements of relaxin in the breast milk and blood were made in 12 women three days after a term delivery and in 16 women who delivered early (preterm). Relaxin concentrations remained similar in both delivery groups in breast milk and maternal blood. Relaxin was not found in the mother's blood six weeks after birth but was found in the breast milk of six out of eight term deliveries. A higher amount of relaxin, found in five out of six preterm deliveries, may be the consequence of a small patient sample. Relaxin was originally thought to be produced by the corpus luteum produced at conception. However, because relaxin is still present six weeks after the degeneration of the corpus luteum, it is hypothesized that relaxin must be produced elsewhere, namely in the breast.

Abstract

IgE switching requires the prior induction of Ce germline transcripts which is mediated by the concerted binding of STAT-6 and NFkB to the Ce promoter. These transcription factors are regulated by IL-4 and CD40, respectively. However the latter can effect other signaling pathways and the present study explores the role of p38 MAPK in induction of Ce germline transcripts. CD40 and IL-4, both alone and in synergy, were initially shown to activate the Ce promoter in a B cell lymphoma cell line. Under the same conditions CD40 caused activation of p38 MAPK, whereas IL-4 was ineffective. The p38 MAPK inhibitor, SB203580, and a dominant negative form of p38 MAPK decreased the CD40 activation of the Ce promoter by reducing the ability of CD40 to increase the transactivation potential of NFkB. This study suggests that p38 MAPK is crucially important in mediating CD40 activation of NFkB which acts to induce Ce germline transcripts, ultimately facilitating IgE switching.

Abstract

Overtone spectroscopy is used to observe the rovibrational spectra of the hydrogen isotopologues H 2 , HD, and D 2 adsorbed in the metal–organic framework known as MOF-5. It is shown that the overtone spectrum facilitates the identification of hydrogen modes which are obscured in the fundamental region by the presence of MOF-5 features. Further, the overtone spectrum of H 2 at the primary adsorption site is greatly enhanced relative to other sites, and thus ambiguities about feature assignment can be avoided. The frequency (wavenumber) of the overtone modes are in good agreement with a Buckingham perturbative model while the relative intensity of the Q 2 (0) pure vibrational mode is found to be anomalously large, most likely arising through mode coupling to the MOF-5 framework. Abstract

The article examines how the bringing together of transformative learning and appreciative inquiry may lead to serious organizational change within a firm. The article explains that the convergance of these two concepts has been dubbed Appreciative Transformative Learning. It is suggested that organizational change begins at the individual level and then expands to a group as a direct outcome of the individual and collective transformative learning. In the article transformation includes cognitive, emotional, and social components of knowledge and behavioral change.

Abstract

The enormity of the challenges involved in building relationships and developing understanding, trust, and collaboration in strategic alliances has been well documented (e.g., Doz, 1996; Doz & Hamel, 1998; Fedor & Werther Jr., 1996; Ghosh, 1996; Kanter, 1994; Kumar 1998; Levinson & Asahi, 1996). Organization development and change technologies (OD), including Appreciative Inquiry (Ai), are uniquely suited to dealing effectively with these challenges, yet the OD and strategic alliance literatures provide little guidance on effective methods or interventions. This comparative case study begins to address those gaps in the literature by comparing the impact of Ai with that of a management education (ME) intervention on the development of"relational capital" in a US-India biotech alliance. The definition of relational capital is expanded from "the goodwill and trust that partners accumulate in a relationship as they gain mutual confidence" (Kale, 1998) to include the development of mutual understanding, trust, relationships, and collaboration. Participants in the Ai intervention reported significantly greater increases in levels of relationship and collaboration (p<.05) than did participants in the ME intervention both immediately after the sessions and four months later. Participants in both interventions reported growth in their understanding of their partner's business and their leadership's expectations for the Alliance. However, the levels of understanding and trust did not significantly differ between the Ai and ME sessions. Overall, Ai was found to support building relational capital in this transcultural strategic alliance. Abstract

Abstract: A composite softball bat and two different softball constructions were investigated using experimental and finite element (FE) methods. Softball characterizations were completed using COR (coefficient of restitution against a flat wall), CCOR (cylindrical coefficient of restitution), compression, and dynamic stiffness. The composite bat characterization included barrel compression and modal analysis. FE analyses were completed in LS-DYNA to explore the capabilities for the experimentally determined material parameters for the softballs to be used in predicting bat performance as quantified by BBS (batted-ball speed). Softballs were modeled using the viscoelastic material models, and the composite softball bat model was constructed per the ply stack-up and ply properties as provided by the manufacturer. The model showed mixed results for its ability to predict the relative batted-ball speed as a function of ball type for the two softballs considered in the study. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

246. Magic and Ultra in the China-Burma-India Theater

Abstract

The United States broke the Japanese diplomatic cipher "Purple," code-named "MAGIC," prior to Pearl Harbor. Decoding success with the various Japanese military codes, code-named "ULTRA," was not achieved until 1943. MAGIC and military (as distinct from naval) ULTRA were the responsibility of the U.S. Army. All MAGIC and ULTRA decrypts were shared with the British. MAGIC and ULTRA were made available to major commanders in the China-Burma-India Theater as they became available. This study makes use of the official U.S. Army history of the theater, intelligence histories, the daily "Magic Summaries," and ULTRA material to examine the operational use of MAGIC and ULTRA. The study focuses on the Second Burma and North Burma Campaigns while making observations about the Salween Campaign and the British defense of India. The study concludes that neither ULTRA nor MAGIC were able to consistently fathom Japanese intentions in Burma and that the ultimate importance of MAGIC and ULTRA was to confirm intelligence obtained from other sources. Nevertheless, as the war went on, ULTRA revealed more and more of Japanese operational goals.

Abstract

Though we noted that TSH levels are a sensitive indicator of overt thyroid dysfunction, we did not mean to reassure practitioners that checking TSH levels should be the first step in clinical decision making. Physiologically, TSH levels do respond to the levels of thyroid hormones, but in the therapeutic situation just as in a "controlling" situation, any TSH level will correspond to a range of thyroid hormone values in the population ([7]). Only if we knew the TSH level that corresponded with mid-range thyroid hormone levels in a given individual, and we knew that TSH physiology had not been altered by the replacement therapy, would we have a suitable TSH target level for that individual, for that replacement therapy.
