Abstract

Many television shows provide audiences with a sense of how people in romantic relationships should act and behave and often reinforce traditional views of gender norms and roles. TV is also one of the most influential factors in society - it impacts the perceptions and values that adolescents, amongst other age groups, hold in relation to a variety of issues and topics. We investigated whether participants would perceive any changes in the way that representations in television shows portray gender stereotypes within heterosexual romantic relationships across time. To test this, we conducted two studies in which participants viewed two shows from 2017-2018 along with two shows from 1985-1986, then completed a series of survey items that measured whether perceptions of gender stereotypes in mainstream TV shows have changed over time.

Abstract

The present study used multilevel structural equation modeling to examine relationships between sexual minority status and college belonging concerns, academic outcomes, and psychological health. We expect LGB students to experience more belonging concerns in college, compared to their straight peers and that these concerns will predict poorer academic and psychological health outcomes.

Abstract

Six evidence-based principles for remedial vocabulary instruction are developed and described. Implementation of the principles was undertaken by twenty tutors, all of who were experienced classroom teachers, in a university clinical reading program that used one-to-one instruction. Successful strategies and the tutor's reactions are described using three case studies of students from grades two, five and eight.

Abstract

The effectiveness of state enterprise zone programs was examined by using a hypothetical-firm model called the Tax and Incentives Model-Enterprise Zones (TAIM-ez) model to analyze the value of enterprise zone incentives to businesses across the United States and especially in the 13 states that had substantial enterprise zone programs by 1990. The study raised considerable doubts regarding state enterprise zone programs' benefits to states, businesses, and targeted workers. The following policy suggestions were offered: (1) exempt some percentage of zone income from state corporate income taxation; (2) think of enterprise zones as concentrations of the hard-to-employ, and base criteria for creating zones entirely on residents' demographics; and (3) integrate enterprise zones with transportation and social policy to provide better access to jobs for those most in need of them. (Forty-seven tables/figures are included. The following are among the items appended: detailed description of the TAIM-ez model; a comparison of the TAIM and TAIM-ez models; discussions of the tax elasticity of employment and fiscal break-even; information about the Standard Statistical Establishment List data; guidelines for translating enterprise zone boundaries and tax characteristics of zones; detailed study results; information on gravity-based commuting models; and a discussion of enterprise zones and commuting. Abstract

Objective Care for fear of cancer recurrence (FCR) is considered the most common unmet need among cancer survivors. Yet the prevalence of FCR and predisposing factors remain inconclusive. To support targeted care, we provide a comprehensive overview of the prevalence and severity of FCR among cancer survivors and patients, as measured using the short form of the validated Fear of Cancer Recurrence Inventory (FCRI-SF). We also report on associations between FCR and clinical and demographic characteristics. Methods This is a systematic review and individual participant data (IPD) meta-analysis on the prevalence of FCR. In the review, we included all studies that used the FCRI-SF with adult (≥18 years) cancer survivors and patients. Date of search: 7 February 2020. Risk of bias was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute critical appraisal tool. Results IPD were requested from 87 unique studies and provided for 46 studies comprising 11,226 participants from 13 countries. 9311 respondents were included for the main analyses. On the FCRI-SF (range 0–36), 58.8% of respondents scored ≥13, 45.1% scored ≥16 and 19.2% scored ≥22. FCR decreased with age and women reported more FCR than men. FCR was found across cancer types and continents and for all time periods since cancer diagnosis. Conclusions FCR affects a considerable number of cancer survivors and patients. It is therefore important that healthcare providers discuss this issue with their patients and provide treatment when needed. Further research is needed to investigate how best to prevent and treat FCR and to identify other factors associated with FCR. The protocol was prospectively registered (PROSPERO CRD42020142185).
