Abstract

Several Fe-Ce catalysts for FT synthesis were prepared following two different methods: coprecipitation from Fe and Ce nitrate solutions and a physical mixture of pure Fe and Ce precursors. The iron phases present in the activated catalysts were identified by XRD and Mössbauer spectroscopy. A good correlation between both techniques was found. The results revealed that the cerium oxide in the samples prepared by coprecipitation produces two effects: (i), stabilization of metastable species (Fe1-xO), and (ii), a decrease in the crystallite size of the iron species upon increasing Ce-contents, as inferred from an increase in superparamagnetic species. The catalysts were tested in CO hydrogenation in a flow reactor. It was found that selectivity towards light olefins increases for the coprecipitated Ce-containing catalysts, whereas CO conversion followed the opposite trend. Since the Fe1-xO phase was detected in these catalysts, it is suggested that the formation of the Fe1-xO phase would be responsible for the drop in catalytic activity. © 2005 American Institute of Physics [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) composed of resorcinol, 3-hydroxypyridine and tetraethylammonium bromide were used for the synthesis of hierarchical nitrogen-doped carbon molecular sieves. DESs played multiple roles in the synthetic process, as the liquid medium that ensures reagent homogenization, the structure-directing agent responsible for the achievement of the hierarchical structure, and the source of carbon and nitrogen for the solid sorbent obtained after carbonization. Thus, the synthesis offers an economy of reagents that emphasizes the green nature and low cost of conventional polycondensation. Interestingly, while macropores facilitated mass transport and access to the surface area, the combination of the molecular sieve structure and nitrogen functionalization provided, respectively, excellent CO[sub 2] adsorption capacities of up to 3.7 mmol g[sup -1] and outstanding CO[sub 2]-N[sub 2] selectivities of up to 14.4 from single component gas data. Nonetheless, the CO[sub 2]-N[sub 2] selectivity in the Henry law regime - representative of post-combustion flue-gas streams - of some of our carbons was particularly remarkable (e.g. 96), comparable to or even higher than those described for most recent carbons, and only surpassed by those of certain zeolites. 250. Electrocatalytic Activity of 3-Dimensional Ordered Macroporous Gold Electrode-Based Lactate Biosensors Platforms as a Function of Pore Layer Number.

Abstract

We report the electrocatalytic response of a lactate biosensor, based on a 3-dimensional ordered macroporous (3DOM) gold electrode, as a function of the pore layer number. The biosensor was developed by covalent immobilization of lactate oxidase (LOx) to a self-assembled monolayer of dithiobis- N-succinimidyl propionate (DTSP). The binding of DTSP to the gold surface was studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), indicating the existence of SAu bonds. The DTSP coverage and the different steps followed in the construction of the biosensor were examined by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). The catalytic response to a 14 mM lactate concentration, increased linearly with the pore layer number of the 3DOM gold electrode, reaching a value 3 times higher, than for polycrystalline gold electrodes, for 7.5 layers.
