Abstract

An improved effective medium approximation (EMA) is presented that accounts for higher order interactions between metal nanoparticles in metal-dielectric composite materials and compared to experimental results. The theoretical results of this formalism are applied to a composite material consisting of spherical gold nanoparticles randomly distributed in a dielectric matrix, which has been extensively characterized with respect to its structural and optical properties. The experimental results and theoretical predictions are compared and the results are discussed. It is shown that the modified theory expands the range to which EMA can be applied to a metal filling fraction of ∼20% at very little additional computational expenses. The improved theory also allows extracting more information from the optical characterization of the composite material such as the distribution of the interparticle distances in a composite. Abstract

The combination of organic chemistry and chemical vapor deposition enables a unique way to deposit conformal, high quality polymer thin films from the vapor phase. Particularly initiated chemical vapor deposition (iCVD) has recently shown its great potential in many different application fields. With the ever-increasing demands on the process, the need for additional process refinement is also growing. In this study the enhancement of the iCVD process by in-situ mass spectrometry is presented. The approach enables insight into real-time reaction kinetics during the deposition process as well as identification of reaction pathways. Furthermore, the composition of the gas phase can be precisely controlled and spontaneously adjusted if necessary. Particularly the deposition of thin films with thicknesses in the low nanometer range and the deposition of copolymers can benefit from this approach. The presented approach enables enhanced process control as well as the ability to perform extensive kinetic studies.

Abstract

Oral presentation given at the DGP Verhandlungen, held in Berlin (Germany) on March 15-20th, 2015., The reproducible low-cost fabrication of functional polymer-metal-nanocomposites with tailored optoelectronic properties remains a major issue in applied nanotechnology. In order to obtain full control over the nanostructural evolution at the metal-polymer interface and its impact on optoelectronic properties, we employed the combination of in-situ time-resolved GISAXS [1] with in-situ surface differential reflectivity spectrometry during sputter deposition of gold on thin polystyrene films. We correlate the evolution of the metallic layer morphology with changes in the key scattering. This enabled us to identify the different growth regimes with their specific thresholds and permits a better understanding of the growth kinetics of gold clusters on polymer substrates. Our study opens up the opportunity to improve nanofabrication of tailored metal-polymer nanostructures for organic electronics like photovoltaic applications and plasmonic-based technologies.

Poster presented at the DGP Verhandlungen, held in Berlin (Germany) on March 15-20th, 2015., Although it is well established in industry and important for many applications the sputter deposition of metals onto organic surfaces is yet to be completely understood. Due to the inherent complexity (e.g. bombardment of the organic surfaces by energetic ions) of the sputtering process the basic mechanisms determining the final microstructure are still to be identified. The complexity of sputter deposition and the post-deposition changes which are to be expected necessitate the use of in-situ methods. In-situ grazing incidence small angle scattering (GISAXS) has been used to extract structural information with high spatial and temporal resolution from a growing Au-film deposited via RF-sputter deposition onto a P(VDF-TrFE)-film. The Au-P(VDF-TrFE) system has been chosen as a model system of a relatively inert metal-polymer pair. Analysis of the GISAXS data yields information about the morphology of the growing Au-film. Comparing these results to simulated scattering data provides further information about the basic growth mechanisms acting at different stages of the growth of the metal film.

Abstract

The reproducible low-cost fabrication of functional metal-polymer nanocomposites with tailored optoelectronic properties for advanced applications remains a major challenge in applied nanotechnology. To obtain full control over the nanostructural evolution at the metal-polymer interface and its impact on optoelectronic properties, we employed combined in situ time-resolved microfocus grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering (μGISAXS) with in situ UV/vis specular reflectance spectroscopy (SRS) during sputter deposition of gold on thin polystyrene films. On the basis of the temporal evolution of the key scattering features in the real-time μGISAXS experiment, we directly observed four different growth regimes: nucleation, isolated island growth, growth of larger aggregates via partial coalescence, and continuous layer growth. Moreover, their individual thresholds were identified with subnanometer resolution and correlated to the changes in optical properties. During sputter deposition, a change in optical reflectivity of the pristine gray-blue PS film was observed ranging from dark blue color due to the presence of isolated nanoclusters at the interface to bright red color from larger Au aggregates. We used simplified geometrical assumptions to model the evolution of average real space parameters (distance, size, density, contact angle) in excellent agreement with the qualitative observation of key scattering features. A decrease of contact angles was observed during the island-to-percolation transition and confirmed by simulations. Furthermore, a surface diffusion coefficient according to the kinetic freezing model and interfacial energy of Au on PS at room temperature were calculated based on a real-time experiment. The morphological characterization is complemented by X-ray reflectivity, optical, and electron microscopy. Our study permits a better understanding of the growth kinetics of gold clusters and their self-organization into complex nanostructures on polymer substrates. Abstract

Au nanoparticle (NP) decorated heterogeneous TiO2catalysts are known to be effective in the degradation of various organic pollutants. The photocatalytic performance of such Au–TiO2structures remarkably depends on the size, morphology, and surface coverage of the Au NPs decorating TiO2. Here we propose an effective way of preparing a highly active Au nanocluster (NC) decorated TiO2thin film by a novel photodeposition method. By altering the solvent type as well as the illumination time, we achieved well-controlled surface coverage of TiO2by Au NCs, which directly influences the photocatalytic performance. Here the Au NCs coverage affects both the electron store capacity and the optical absorption of the hybrid Au–TiO2system. At low surface coverage, 19.2–29.5%, the Au NCs seem to enhance significantly the optical adsorption of TiO2at UV wavelengths which therefore leads to a higher photocatalytic performance.

226. Frequency Dependency of the Delta-E Effect and the Sensitivity of Delta-E Effect Magnetic Field Sensors.

Abstract

In recent years the delta-E effect has been used for detecting low frequency and low amplitude magnetic fields. Delta-E effect sensors utilize a forced mechanical resonator that is detuned by the delta-E effect upon application of a magnetic field. Typical frequencies of operation are from several kHz to the upper MHz regime. Different models have been used to describe the delta-E effect in those devices, but the frequency dependency has mainly been neglected. With this work we present a simple description of the delta-E effect as a function of the differential magnetic susceptibility χ of the magnetic material. We derive an analytical expression for χ that permits describing the frequency dependency of the delta-E effect of the Young's modulus and the magnetic sensitivity. Calculations are compared with measurements on soft-magnetic (Fe90Co10)78Si12B10 thin films. We show that the frequency of operation can have a strong influence on the delta-E effect and the magnetic sensitivity of delta-E effect sensors. Overall, the delta-E effect reduces with increasing frequency and results in a stiffening of the Young's modulus above the ferromagnetic resonance frequency. The details depend on the Gilbert damping. Whereas for large Gilbert damping the sensitivity continuously decreases with frequency, typical damping values result in an amplification close to the ferromagnetic resonance frequency. Abstract

Plasmons have facilitated diverse analytical applications due to the boosting signal detectability by hot spots. In practical applications, it is crucial to fabricate straightforward, large-scale, and reproducible plasmonic substrates. Dewetting treatment, viaapplying direct thermal annealing of metal films, has been used as a straightforward method in the fabrication of such plasmonic nanostructures. However, tailoring the evolution of the dewetting process of metal films poses considerable experimental complexities, mainly due to nanoscale structure formation. Here, we use grazing-incidence small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering for the in situinvestigation of the high-power impulse magnetron sputter deposition of Ag on self-assembled Au nanoparticle arrays at low-temperature dewetting conditions. This approach allows us to examine both the direct formation of binary Au/Ag nanostructure and the consequential impact of the dewetting process on the spatial arrangement of the bimetallic nanoparticles. It is observed that the dewetting at 100 °C is sufficient to favor the establishment of a homogenized structural configuration of bimetallic nanostructures, which is beneficial for localized surface plasmon resonances (LSPRs). The fabricated metal nanostructures show potential application for the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) detection of rhodamine 6G molecules. As SERS platform, bimetallic nanostructures formed with dewetting conditions turn out to be superior to those without dewetting conditions. The method in this work is envisioned as a facile strategy for the fabrication of plasmonic nanostructures.

230. Low-Temperature Solution Synthesis of Au-Modified ZnO Nanowires for Highly Efficient Hydrogen Nanosensors

Abstract

In this research, the low-temperature single-step electrochemical deposition of arrayed ZnO nanowires (NWs) decorated by Au nanoparticles (NPs) with diameters ranging between 10 and 100 nm is successfully demonstrated for the first time. The AuNPs and ZnO NWs were grown simultaneously in the same growth solution in consideration of the HAuCl4concentration. Optical, structural, and chemical characterizations were analyzed in detail, proving high crystallinity of the NWs as well as the distribution of Au NPs on the surface of zinc oxide NWs demonstrated by transmission electron microscopy. Individual Au NPs-functionalized ZnO NWs (Au-NP/ZnO-NWs) were incorporated into sensor nanodevices using an focused ion bean/scanning electron microscopy (FIB/SEM) scientific instrument. The gas-sensing investigations demonstrated excellent selectivity to hydrogen gas at room temperature (RT) with a gas response, Igas/Iair, as high as 7.5–100 ppm for Au-NP/ZnO-NWs, possessing a AuNP surface coverage of ∼6.4%. The concentration of HAuCl4in the electrochemical solution was observed to have no significant impact on the gas-sensing parameters in our experiments. This highlights the significant influence of the total Au/ZnO interfacial area establishing Schottky contacts for the achievement of high performances. The most significant performance of H2response was observed for gas concentrations higher than 500 ppm of H2in the environment, which was attributed to the surface metallization of ZnO NWs during exposure to hydrogen. For this case, an ultrahigh response of about 32.9 and 47 to 1000 and 5000 ppm of H2was obtained, respectively. Spin-polarized periodic density functional theory calculations were realized on Au/ZnO bulk and surface-functionalized models, validating the experimental hypothesis. The combination of H2gas detection at RT, ultralow power consumption, and reduced dimensions makes these micro-nanodevices excellent candidates for hydrogen gas leakage detection, including hydrogen gas monitoring (less than 1 ppm).

An optically driven metamaterial with a photoswitchable weak and strong molecular‐plasmonic coupling is demonstrated. In this active perfect absorber, the absorption band can be broadened more than 150 nm (split with an energy difference of 780 meV) by UV irradiation, which demonstrates a new class of optically tunable metamaterial absorber for visible frequencies.

Abstract: Hierarchical gold (Au) structures with sharp edges garner a strong interest for nanoelectronics, nanoenergy harvesting devices, and nano‐biomedical applications due the exceptional strong electric field (hot spot) enhancement at their tips. Herein, a facile method to synthesize hierarchical Au needle clusters (HAuNCs) on highly active titanium oxide (TiO2) thin film is reported. Different from surfactant‐directed photochemical‐assisted synthesis methods, a photocatalytic deposition approach is demonstrated, which allows positioning and patterning of HAuNCs on TiO2 target without using any surfactant or stabilizer. This green synthesis approach enables to control the size and the geometry of deposited HAuNCs by simply altering the photocatalytic activity of TiO2 target, UV light intensity, and irradiation time. 244. Nanogenerator and piezotronic inspired concepts for energy efficient magnetic field sensors

Abstract

Inspired by recent developments in the field of nanogenerators and piezotronics, two different approaches for the improvement of magnetic field sensing are discussed and their feasibility has been experimentally demonstrated. In the first concept, it could be shown that a piezotronic read-out eliminates the need for an external pre-amplifier in MEMS type cantilever sensors. This leads to reduced noise and lower power consumption, which makes the sensors interesting for self-powered applications. Furthermore, the lower noise is measured at short integration times, which reveals further application strategies for piezotronic sensor read-out. In the second concept, a new nanogenerator inspired utilization of electret film allows a reduction of the resonance frequency of cantilever sensors. This reduction is accompanied by higher amplitudes and lower Q-factors allowing energy efficient broadband measurements. A theoretical model has been developed based on an anharmonic oscillator, which is in good agreement with the observed experimental results. Both the demonstrated strategies can help to improve the energy efficiency of the presented magnetic field sensors, allowing lower power consumption and a decreased noise level.

Abstract

In recent years, semiconductor photocatalysts such as zinc oxide (ZnO) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) have been studied to utilize solar light for energy production and environmental remediation. However, their wide band gap energy and fast charge recombination limit their practical applications. So far, various approaches, such as noble metal incorporation, metal oxide coupling, and the design of Z-scheme photocatalyst systems, among others, have been explored to enhance the lifetime of photogenerated charge carriers in ZnO and TiO2. In this study, a novel TiO2-Ag-ZnO nanocomposite photocatalyst has been successfully synthesized by a combination of wet chemistry, photochemistry, and plasma-based processes. Simple spin coating of ZnO thin films was coupled with subsequent photodeposition of metallic Ag nanoparticles (NPs). Afterward, well-uniform TiO2NPs (roughly 18 nm) were deposited on this unique Ag-ZnO surface via a gas cluster aggregation source (GAS) process. The results showed that the activity of the ZnO photocatalyst under mixed UV-visible light was significantly increased by the TiO2and Ag contributions. A single mechanism to be responsible for the photocatalytic activity can be excluded. Instead, a critical assessment of the possible mechanisms corresponding to the different interfaces present at the TiO2-Ag-ZnO surface including a Z–scheme is provided.
