We develop an analytical ringdown waveform model, including both the fundamental and the overtone quasinormal modes, for charged black holes and show that it is precise enough to analyze current gravitational wave data. Applying this waveform model to GW150914, the charge to mass ratio of the remnant black hole ($\lambda_f$) has been constrained with the sole ringdown gravitational wave data for the first time and the $90\%$ upper limit is $\lambda_f\leq 0.38$. Correspondingly, the deviation parameter of the scalar-tensor vector gravity ($\alpha_{\rm s}$) is limited to be $\alpha_{\rm s}\leq 0.17$. Gravitational-wave (GW) data can be used to test general relativity in the highly nonlinear and strong field regime. Modified gravity theories such as Einstein-dilation-Gauss-Bonnet and dynamical Chern-Simons can be tested with the additional GW signals detected in the first half of the third observing run of Advanced LIGO/Virgo. Specifically, we analyze gravitational-wave data of GW190412 and GW190814 to place constraints on the parameters of these two theories. Our results indicate that dynamical Chern-Simons gravity remains unconstrained. For Einstein-dilation-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, we find $\sqrt{\alpha_{\rm EdGB}}\lesssim 0.40\,\rm km$ when considering GW190814 data, assuming it is a black hole binary. Very recently, the Fermi-Lab reported the new experimental combined results on the magnetic momentum of muon with a 4.2$\sigma$ discrepancy compared with the expectation of the Standard Model \cite{Fermi_Lab}. A new light gauge boson $X$ in the $L_{\mu}-L_{\tau}$ model provides a good explanation for the $g-2$ anomaly. A Dirac fermion dark matter with a large $L_{\mu}-L_{\tau}$ charge can explain both the $g-2$ anomaly and the dark matter relic density \cite{Asai_2021}. In this work, we focus on the case that the mass of the dark matter is larger than the mass of muon (i.e. $m_{\Psi} > m_{\mu}$) for which the channel $\Psi \Psi \rightarrow \mu^- \mu^+$ opens. Although the cross section $(\sigma v)_{\mu^{-}\mu^{+}}$ is smaller by a factor of $1/q_{\Psi}^2$ ($q_{\Psi}$ represents the $L_{\mu}-L_{\tau}$ charge of the dark matter) compared with the channel $\Psi\Psi \rightarrow XX \rightarrow \nu\nu\bar{\nu}\bar{\nu}$, the resulting secondary electrons and positrons could imprint on their spectra above GeV energies due to the reacceleration effect of cosmic ray propagation. We use the AMS-02 measurements of electrons and positrons to constrain the annihilation cross section of the channel $\Psi\Psi \rightarrow \mu^{-}\mu^{+}$, which rules out part of the parameter space of the large $L_{\mu}-L_{\tau}$ charged dark matter model to account for the muon $g-2$ anomaly., Comment: 5 pages,3 figures

We develop a new method based on Gaussian process to reconstruct the mass distribution of binary black holes (BBHs). Instead of prespecifying the formalisms of mass distribution, we introduce a more flexible and nonparametric model with which the distribution can be mainly determined by the observed data. We first test our method with simulated data, and find that it can well recover the injected distribution. Then we apply this method to analyze the data of BBHs' observations from LIGO-Virgo Gravitational-Wave Transient Catalog 2. By reconstructing the chirp mass distribution, we find that there is a peak or a platform locating at $20-30\,M_{\odot}$ rather than a single-power-law-like decrease from low mass to high mass. Moreover, one or two peaks in the chirp mass range of $\mathcal{M}<20\,M_{\odot}$ may be favored by the data. Assuming a mass-independent mass ratio distribution of $p(q)\propto q^{1.4}$, we further obtain a distribution of primary mass, and find that there is a feature locating in the range of $(30, 40)\,M_{\odot}$, which can be related to \textsc{Broken Power Law} and \textsc{Power Law + Peak} distributions described in The LIGO Scientific Collaboration et al. (2020). Besides, the merger rate of BBHs is estimated to $\mathcal{R} = 26.29^{+14.21}_{-8.96}~{\rm Gpc^{-3}~yr^{-1}}$ supposing there is no redshift evolution.

The supersymmetric model is one of the most attractive extensions of the Standard Model of particle physics. In light of the most recently reported anomaly of the muon g-2 measurement by the FermiLab E989 experiment, and the excesses of gamma rays at the Galactic center observed by Fermi-LAT space telescope, as well as the antiproton excess observed by the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer, we propose to account for all these anomalies or excesses in the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. Considering various experimental constraints including the Higgs mass, B-physics, collider data, dark matter relic density and direct detections, we find that a $\sim 60$ GeV bino-like neutralino is able to successfully explain all these observations. We analyze the LIGO/Virgo GWTC-2 catalog to study the primary mass distribution of the merging black holes. We perform hierarchical Bayesian analysis, and examine whether the mass distribution has a sharp cutoff for primary black hole masses below $65 M_\odot$, as predicted in pulsational pair instability supernova model. We construct two empirical mass functions. One is a piece-wise function with two power-law segments jointed by a sudden drop. The other consists of a main truncated power-law component, a Gaussian component, and a third very massive component. Both models can reasonably fit the data and a sharp drop of the mass distribution is found at $\sim 50M_\odot$, suggesting that the majority of the observed black holes can be explained by the stellar evolution scenarios in which the pulsational pair-instability process takes place. We study the influence of solid boundaries on dynamics and structure of active fluids as the height of the container, $z$, changes. Along the varying dimension, the geometry systematically increases, therefore, the confinement ($z$) transits from "strong confinement", to "intermediate confinement" and to "weak confinement" (close to "unconfined"). In horizontal dimensions ($x,y$), the system remains "unconfined". Through tracking the tracers dispersed in the active fluids in three dimensions we observed that activity level, characterized by velocity fluctuations of flow tracers, increases as system size increases. Concomitantly, the velocity-velocity temporal correlation changes from weak correlation to strong positive correlation, indicating "memory" in active flows. We estimate the characteristic size of the flow structure by integrating the velocity-velocity spatial correlation function. The integral increases as confinement becomes weaker and saturates at approximately 400 microns as the system becomes "unconfined". This saturation indicates an intrinsic length scale which, along with the small-scale isotropy, demonstrates the multi-scale nature of this kinesin-driven bundled microtubule system.

We develop a new nonparametric method to reconstruct the Equation of State (EoS) of Neutron Star with multimessenger data. As an universal function approximator, the Feed-Forward Neural Network (FFNN) with one hidden layer and a sigmoidal activation function can approximately fit any continuous function. Thus we are able to implement the nonparametric FFNN representation of the EoSs. This new representation is validated by its capabilities of fitting the theoretical EoSs and recovering the injected parameters. Then we adopt this nonparametric method to analyze the real data, including mass-tidal deformability measurement from the Binary Neutron Star (BNS) merger Gravitational Wave (GW) event GW170817 and mass-radius measurement of PSR J0030+0451 by {\it NICER}. We take the publicly available samples to construct the likelihood and use the nested sampling to obtain the posteriors of the parameters of FFNN according to the Bayesian theorem, which in turn can be translated to the posteriors of EoS parameters. Combining all these data, for a canonical 1.4 $M_\odot$ neutron star, we get the radius $R_{1.4}=11.83^{+1.25}_{-1.08}$ km and the tidal deformability $\Lambda_{1.4} = 323^{+334}_{-165}$ (90\% confidence interval).Furthermore, we find that in the high density region ($\geq 3\rho_{\rm sat}$), the 90\% lower limits of the $c_{\rm s}^2/c^2$ ($c_{\rm s}$ is the sound speed and $c$ is the velocity of light in the vacuum) are above $1/3$, which means that the so-called conformal limit (i.e., $c_{\rm s}^2/c^2<1/3$) is not always valid in the neutron stars., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

Axion-like particles (ALPs) provide a feasible explanation for the observed lower TeV opacity of the Universe. If the anomaly TeV transparency is caused by ALPs, then the fluxes of distant extragalactic sources will be enhanced at photon energies beyond TeV, resulting in an enhancement of the observed extragalactic gamma-ray background (EGB) spectrum. In this work, we have investigated the ALP modulation on the EGB spectrum at TeV energies. Our results show that in the most optimistic case, the existence of ALPs can cause the EGB spectrum to greatly deviate from the prediction of a pure extragalactic-background-light (EBL) absorption scenario. The deviation occurs at approximately $\gtrsim$1 TeV, and the current EGB measurements by Fermi-LAT cannot identify such an effect. We also find that most of the sensitive ALP parameters have been ruled out by existing constraints, leaving only a small region of unrestricted parameters that can be probed using the EGB effect investigated in this work. Cosmic rays are important probe of a number of fundamental physical problems such as the acceleration of high and very high energy particles in extreme astrophysical environments. The Galactic center is widely anticipated to be an important cosmic-ray source and the observations of some Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes did successfully reveal a component of TeV-PeV cosmic rays in the vicinity of the Galactic center. Here we report the identification of GeV-TeV cosmic rays in the central molecular zone with the $\gamma$-ray observations of the Fermi Large Area Telescope, whose spectrum and spatial gradient are consistent with that measured by the Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes but the corresponding cosmic-ray energy density is substantially lower than the so-called cosmic-ray sea component, suggesting the presence of a high energy particle accelerator at the Galactic center and the existence of a barrier that can effectively suppress the penetration of the particles from the cosmic-ray sea to the central molecular zone., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, matches version published in Nature Communications

GW190426_152155 was recently reported as one of the 39 candidate gravitational wave (GW) events in \citet{2020arXiv201014527A}, which has an unusual source-frame chirp mass $\sim 2.4M_{\odot}$ and may be the first GW signal from a neutron star-black hole (NSBH) merger. Assuming an astrophysical origin, we reanalyze GW190426_152155 using several waveforms with different characteristics, and consider two different priors for the mass ratio of the binary (Uniform and LogUniform). We find that the results are influenced by the priors of mass ratio, and this candidate could also be from the merger of two low mass black holes (BH). In the case for a binary black hole (BBH) merger, the effective spin is likely negative and the effective precession spin is non-negligible. As for the NSBH merger, supposing the mass of the light object follow the distribution of current neutron stars (NSs) with a reasonably measured/constrained mass, the spin of the low mass BH is so small that is hard to generate bright electromagnetic emission. Finally, we estimate a merger rate of GW190426\_152155-like systems to be $59^{+137}_{-51}~{\rm Gpc}^{-3}~{\rm yr}^{-1}$., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

The equation of state (EoS) of the neutron star (NS) matter remains an enigma. In this work we perform the Bayesian parameter inference with the gravitational wave data (GW170817) and mass-radius observations of some NSs (PSR J0030+0451, PSR J0437-4715, and 4U 1702-429) using the phenomenologically constructed EoS models to search for a potential first-order phase transition. Our phenomenological EoS models take the advantages of current widely used parametrizing methods, which are flexible enough to resemble various theoretical EoS models. We find that the current observation data are still not informative enough to support/rule out phase transition, due to the comparable evidences for models with and without phase transition. However, the bulk properties of the canonical $1.4\,M_\odot$ NS and the pressure at around $2\rho_{\rm sat}$ are well constrained by the data, where $\rho_{\rm sat}$ is the nuclear saturation density. Moreover, strong phase transition at low densities is disfavored, and the $1\sigma$ lower bound of transition density is constrained to $1.84\rho_{\rm sat}$., Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures, published in PRD

The sample of neutron stars with a measured mass is growing quickly. With the latest sample, we adopt both a flexible Gaussian mixture model and a Gaussian plus Cauchy-Lorentz component model to infer the mass distribution of neutron stars and use the Bayesian model selection to explore evidence for multimodality and a sharp cutoff in the mass distribution. The two models yield rather similar results. Consistent with previous studies, we find evidence for a bimodal distribution together with a cutoff at a mass of $M_{\rm max}=2.26_{-0.05}^{+0.12}M_\odot$ (68% credible interval; for the Gaussian mixture model). If such a cutoff is interpreted as the maximum gravitational mass of nonrotating cold neutron stars, the prospect of forming supramassive remnants is found to be quite promising for the double neutron star mergers with a total gravitational mass less than or equal to 2.7$M_\odot$ unless the thermal pions could substantially soften the equation of state for the very hot neutron star matter. These supramassive remnants have a typical kinetic rotational energy of approximately $1-2\times 10^{53}$ ergs. Together with a high neutron star merger rate approximately $10^{3}~{\rm Gpc^{-3}~yr^{-3}}$, the neutron star mergers are expected to be significant sources of EeV($10^{18}$eV) cosmic-ray protons., Comment: 17 pages, 9 figures, and 1 table. With the black hole mass function (BHMF; assuming an exponential cutoff at a mass of $\sim 40\,M_\odot$) of coalescing binary black hole systems constructed with the events detected in the O1 run of the advanced LIGO/Virgo network, Liang et al.(2017) predicted that the birth of the lightest intermediate mass black holes (LIMBHs; with a final mass of $\gtrsim 100\,M_\odot$) is very likely to be caught by the advanced LIGO/Virgo detectors in their O3 run. The O1 and O2 observation run data, however, strongly favor a cutoff of the BHMF much sharper than the exponential one. In this work we show that a power-law function followed by a sudden drop at $\sim 40\,M_\odot$ by a factor of $\sim $a few tens and then a new power-law component extending to $\geq 100M_\odot$ are consistent with the O1 and O2 observation run data. With this new BHMF, quite a few LIMBH events can be detected in the O3 observation run of advanced LIGO/Virgo. The first LIMBH born in GW190521, an event detected in the early stage of the O3 run of advanced LIGO/Virgo network, provides additional motivation for our hypothesis., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Dark matter might be in the form of a dark plasma in the Milky Way halo. Specifically, we consider here a hidden sector consisting of a light `dark electron' and a much heavier `dark proton', each charged under an unbroken $U(1)'$ gauge symmetry. These self-interacting dark sector particles can also interact with ordinary matter via the kinetic mixing interaction, and lead to a signal in dark matter direct detection experiments. Indeed, keV electron recoils can arise quite naturally in such models from dark electron scattering off loosely bound atomic electrons. Here we examine the recently reported XENON1T excess in the context of such a plasma dark matter model. We find that the observed excess can be explained if kinetic mixing is in the approximate range: $10^{-12} \lesssim \epsilon \lesssim 10^{-10}$. The allowed parameter space is consistent with astrophysical and cosmological constraints and consistent also with other direct detection experiments., Comment: about 6 pages

Massive bosons, such as light scalars and vector bosons, can lead to instabilities of rotating black holes by the superradiance effect, which extracts energy and angular momentum from rapidly-rotating black holes effectively. This process results in spinning-down of black holes and the formation of boson clouds around them. In this work, we used the masses and spins of supermassive black holes measured from the ultraviolet/optical or X-ray observations to constrain the model parameters of the light bosons. We find that the mass range of light bosons from $10^{-22}$ eV to $10^{-17}$ eV can be largely excluded by a set of supermassive black holes (including also the extremely massive ones OJ 287, Ton 618 and SDSS J140821.67+025733.2), particularly for the vector boson scenario, which eliminates a good fraction of the so-called fuzzy dark matter parameter regions. For the scalar bosons with self-interaction, most part of the mass range from $\sim 3 \times 10^{-19}$ eV to $10^{-17}$ eV with a decay constant $f_a > 10^{15}$ GeV can be excluded, which convincingly eliminate the QCD axions at these masses., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Recently the AMS-02 reported the precise measurements of the energy spectra of medium-mass compositions (Neon, Magnesium, Silicon) of primary cosmic rays, which reveal different properties from those of light compositions (Helium, Carbon, Oxygen). Here we propose a nearby source scenario, together with the background source contribution, to explain the newly measured spectra of cosmic ray Ne, Mg, Si, and particularly their differences from that of He, C, O. Their differences at high energies can be naturally accounted for by the element abundance of the nearby source. Specifically, the abundance ratio of the nearby source to the background of the Ne, Mg, Si elements is lower by a factor of $\sim1.7$ than that of the He, C, O elements. Such a difference could be due to the abundance difference of the stellar evolution of the progenitor star or the acceleration process/environment, of the nearby source. This scenario can simultaneously explain the high-energy spectral softening features of cosmic ray spectra revealed recently by CREAM/NUCLEON/DAMPE, as well as the energy-dependent behaviors of the large-scale anisotropies. It is predicted that the dipole anisotropy amplitudes below PeV energies of the Ne, Mg, Si group are smaller than that of the He, C, O group, which can be tested with future measurements., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures; accepted for publication in Frontiers of Physics

Recently, the XENON1T experiment has reported the possible detection of an excess in the electronic recoil spectrum. Such an excess may indicate the presence of new physics. In this work, we suggest that the scattering of mirror electrons with ordinary electrons through photon$-$mirror photon kinetic mixing with parameter $\epsilon \sim 10^{-12}(n_{\rm e'}/0.2{\rm cm^{-3}})^{-1/2}({v_{\rm c}^0/5\times 10^{9}~{\rm cm~s^{-1}}})^{1/2}$ may account for the excess electronic recoil events in XENON1T, where $n_{\rm e'}$ is the density of mirror electron and $v_{\rm c}^0$ is the cutoff velocity of the mirror electron arriving at the earth. Interestingly, this parameter to interpret the excess of XENON1T electronic recoil spectrum are consistent with the constrains of Darkside50., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

High-redshift blazars are valuable tools to study the early Universe. So far only a handful of $\gamma$-ray blazars have been found at redshifts above 3. $\gamma$-ray signals are detected in the direction of PMN J2219-2719 ($z=3.63$) and PMN J2321-0827 ($z=3.16$) by analyzing the 10-year $Fermi$-LAT Pass 8 data. PMN J2219-2719 is not distinguished from the background in the global analysis. During the 5-month epoch, the TS value is 47.8 and the flux is more than 10 times of the 10-year averaged flux. In addition, the angular distance between the $\gamma$-ray position and the radio position of PMN J2219-2719 is only ${0.04}^{\circ}$. Moreover, the $\gamma$-ray and infrared light curves of long time scale are very similar, which support the association between the $\gamma$-ray source and PMN J2219-2719. The global analysis of PMN J2321-0827 suggest a new $\gamma$-ray source, during the flare phase, the TS value is 61.4 and the $\gamma$-ray flux increased significantly. The association probability suggests that PMN J2321-0827 may be the counterpart of the new $\gamma$-ray source. In the future, the number of high-redshift $\gamma$-ray sources will increase by combining $Fermi$-LAT and the upcoming Large Synoptic Survey Telescope., Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures. The post-merger gravitational wave (GW) radiation of the remnant formed in the binary neutron star (BNS) coalescence has not been directly measured, yet. We show in this work that the properties of the BNS involved in GW170817, additionally constrained by PSR J0030+0451, the lower limit on the maximum gravitational mass of non-rotating neutron star (NS) and some nuclear data, are in favor of strong post-merger GW radiation. This conclusion applies to the mergers of Galactic BNS systems as well. Significant post-merger GW radiation is also preferred to improve the consistency between the maximum gravitational mass of the non-rotating NS inferred from GW170817/GRB170817A/AT2017gfo and the latest mass measurements of pulsars. The prominent post-merger gravitational radiation of GW170817-like events are expected to be detectable by advanced LIGO/Virgo detectors in the next decade and then shed valuable lights on the properties of the matter in the extremely high density., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures, Published in ApJ
