Abstract: © 2017 IOP Publishing Ltd. The measured D-D neutron rate of neutral beam heated JET baseline and hybrid H-modes in deuterium is found to be between approximately 50% and 100% of the neutron rate expected from the TRANSP code, depending on the plasma parameters. A number of candidate explanations for the shortfall, such as fuel dilution, errors in beam penetration and effectively available beam power have been excluded. As the neutron rate in JET is dominated by beam-plasma interactions, the 'neutron deficit' may be caused by a yet unidentified form of fast particle redistribution. Modelling, which assumes fast particle transport to be responsible for the deficit, indicates that such redistribution would have to happen at time scales faster than both the slowing down time and the energy confinement time. Sawteeth and edge localised modes are found to make no significant contribution to the deficit. There is also no obvious correlation with magnetohydrodynamic activity measured using magnetic probes at the tokamak vessel walls. Modelling of fast particle orbits in the 3D fields of neoclassical tearing modes shows that realistically sized islands can only contribute a few percent to the deficit. In view of these results it appears unlikely that the neutron deficit results from a single physical process in the plasma.

Abstract: In this paper, the variation of the nuclear matter properties during the fusion reaction and also its relationship with the hindrance phenomenon are examined in the 64Ni+64Ni reaction. For this purpose, the inter-nuclear potential is calculated by using the Skyrme energy density functional formalism in which the used forces are in a wide range of the incompressibility values. The obtained results indicate that by increasing bombarding energy the nuclear matter incompressibility is increasing. Also, this variation shows that nuclear matter exhibits a very soft behavior when moving from the sub-barrier to the deep sub-barrier region in this reaction, which can cause a large overlapping between the interacting nuclei. Since the repulsion arising from the Pauli exclusion principle affects this large overlapping, so it can lead to the fusion hindrance and the fall-off of the cross-sections in the 64Ni+64Ni reaction. Abstract: High user interaction capability of mobile devices can help improve the accuracy of mobile visual search systems. At query time, it is possible to capture multiple views of an object from different viewing angles and at different scales with the mobile device camera to obtain richer information about the object compared to a single view and hence return more accurate results. Motivated by this, we developed a mobile multi-view object image search system, using a client-server architecture. Multi-view images of objects acquired by the mobile clients are processed and local features are sent to the server, which combines the query image representations with early/late fusion methods based on bag-of-visual-words and sends back the query results. We performed a comprehensive analysis of early and late fusion approaches using various similarity functions, on an existing single view and a new multi-view object image database. A DT neutron generator, based on the 3H(2H,n)a fusion reaction, produces 14 MeV neutrons which are tagged both in direction and time with an embedded alpha detector. Prompt neutrons and gamma rays emitted during neutron-induced fissions are detected by plastic scintillators, in coincidence with the alpha particle. Nuclear materials are differentiated from non-nuclear materials and crosstalk events using high multiplicity coincidences. The data acquisition electronics is made of compact FPGA boards. Experiments performed with a mock-up of the measurement system are reported and compared to calculations to validate numerical simulation and post-processing tools. Measurements have been performed with different targets made of iron, lead, or uranium, placed in metallic or wood cargo matrixes. The performances of a full scale cargo container inspection system, with a larger number of detectors optimized for container inspection, are also studied by numerical simulation. Random background due to neutrons which are not correlated with an alpha particle, counting statistics, time and energy resolutions of the data acquisition system, are all taken into account to model the measurements as realistically as possible. A wide range of inspections, with the suspicious item in different positions in different cargo matrixes, have been studied.

Abstract: Recent JET experiments have been dedicated to the studies of fusion reactions between deuterium (D) and Helium-3 (3He) ions using neutral beam injection (NBI) in synergy with third harmonic ion cyclotron radio-frequency heating (ICRH) of the beam. This scenario generates a fast ion deuterium tail enhancing DD and D3He fusion reactions. Modelling and measuring the fast deuterium tail accurately is essential for quantifying the fusion products. This paper presents the modelling of the D distribution function resulting from the NBI+ICRF heating scheme, reinforced by a comparison with dedicated JET fast ion diagnostics, showing an overall good agreement. Finally, a sawtooth activity for these experiments has been observed and interpreted using SPOT/RFOF simulations in the framework of Porcelli's theoretical model, where NBI+ICRH accelerated ions are found to have a strong stabilizing effect, leading to monster sawteeth. Abstract: Combined ICRF and NBI heating played a key role in achieving the world-record fusion yield in the first deuterium-tritium campaign at the JET tokamak in 1997. The current plans for JET include new experiments with deuterium-tritium (D-T) plasmas with more ITER-like conditions given the recently installed ITER-like wall (ILW). In the 2015-2016 campaigns, significant efforts have been devoted to the development of high-performance plasma scenarios compatible with ILW in preparation of the forthcoming D-T campaign. Good progress was made in both the inductive (baseline) and the hybrid scenario: a new record JET ILW fusion yield with a significantly extended duration of the high-performance phase was achieved. This paper reports on the progress with the hybrid scenario which is a candidate for ITER longpulse operation (∼1000 s) thanks to its improved normalized confinement, reduced plasma current and higher plasma beta with respect to the ITER reference baseline scenario. The combined NBI+ICRF power in the hybrid scenario was increased to 33 MW and the record fusion yield, averaged over 100 ms, to 2.9x1016 neutrons/s from the 2014 ILW fusion record of 2.3x1016 neutrons/s. Impurity control with ICRF waves was one of the key means for extending the duration of the high-performance phase. Abstract: During the 2015-2016 JET campaigns many efforts have been devoted to the exploration of high performance plasma scenarios envisaged for ITER operation. In this paper we model the combined ICRF+NBI heating in selected key hybrid discharges using PION. The antenna frequency was tuned to match the cyclotron frequency of minority hydrogen (H) at the center of the tokamak coinciding with the second harmonic cyclotron resonance of deuterium. The modelling takes into account the synergy between ICRF and NBI heating through the second harmonic cyclotron resonance of deuterium beam ions which allows us to assess its impact on the neutron rate RNT. We evaluate the influence of H concentration which was varied in different discharges in order to test their role in the heating performance. According to our modelling, the ICRF enhancement of RNT increases by decreasing the H concentration which increases the ICRF power absorbed by deuterons. We find that in the recent hybrid discharges this ICRF enhancement was in the range of 10-25%. Abstract: ICRH was extensively used in the 2015-16 JET-ILW (ITER like wall) experimental campaign; bulk heating together with high-Z impurity chase-out from plasma centre importantly contributed to the good DD fusion performance obtained recently in JET. Power up to 6 MW was launched in H-mode deuterium plasmas and 8 MW during the hydrogen campaign. The ILA was re-installed and contributed positively to the availability of ICRH power. The ILA produces slightly less high-Z impurities than the A2's and the PWI measured via Be line emission on limiters is in the same ballpark. Specific experiments were conducted to optimise ICRH scenarios in preparation for DT in particular the dual frequency scheme, (H)D and (He)D were tested. 211. Overview of ASDEX Upgrade results

Abstract: The ASDEX Upgrade (AUG) programme is directed towards physics input to critical elements of the ITER design and the preparation of ITER operation, as well as addressing physics issues for a future DEMO design. Since 2015, AUG is equipped with a new pair of 3-strap ICRF antennas, which were designed for a reduction of tungsten release during ICRF operation. As predicted, a factor two reduction on the ICRF-induced W plasma content could be achieved by the reduction of the sheath voltage at the antenna limiters via the compensation of the image currents of the central and side straps in the antenna frame. There are two main operational scenario lines in AUG. Experiments with low collisionality, which comprise current drive, ELM mitigation/suppression and fast ion physics, are mainly done with freshly boronized walls to reduce the tungsten influx at these high edge temperature conditions. Full ELM suppression and non-inductive operation up to a plasma current of Ip = 0.8 MA could be obtained at low plasma density. Plasma exhaust is studied under conditions of high neutral divertor pressure and separatrix electron density, where a fresh boronization is not required. Substantial progress could be achieved for the understanding of the confinement degradation by strong D puffing and the improvement with nitrogen or carbon seeding. Inward/outward shifts of the electron density profile relative to the temperature profile effect the edge stability via the pressure profile changes and lead to improved/decreased pedestal performance. Seeding and D gas puffing are found to effect the core fueling via changes in a region of high density on the high field side (HFSHD). The integration of all above mentioned operational scenarios will be feasible and naturally obtained in a large device where the edge is more opaque for neutrals and higher plasma temperatures provide a lower collisionality. The combination of exhaust control with pellet fueling has been successfully demonstrated. Abstract: The opening of island chains in magnetically confined fusion plasma is a natural, quite common process. The effects on transport, however, are difficult to assess because of the complexity of the phenomenon, which often happens in a dynamic way. In this work we investigate a basic way in which transport may be altered due to the presence of magnetic islands: the modification of the ambipolar radial electric field Er due to the distortion of the flux surfaces and the presence of a separatrix. For the latter, we modify the flux-surface averaged metric coefficients of an ideal magnetic configuration consisting of nested tori. The new radial coordinate excludes the island region. Once the geometry is modified, we also perturb the original Er with a neoclassical scaling taken from Shaing's theory [Phys. Plasmas 9 3470 (2002)]. Figure 1 shows an example application to TJ-II plasmas in a configuration-scan discharge where the 5/3 low-order rational of the rotational transform moves through the plasma minor radius. From the experimental data, the variations of electron temperature with respect to the mean indicate an increment around the resonant location (left), while the model indicates a decrement (right). It is suggested that a more profound modification of transport properties is necessary in order to explain the experimental results.

For the future fusion power plant project DEMO, a NBI wall plug efficiency at least of 0.45 is required, while efficiency of present NBI project is about 0.25. The D(-) beam from a negative ion source is partially neutralized by a gas cell, which leaves more than 40% of energy in residual beams (D(-) and D(+)), so that an ion beam energy recovery system can significantly contribute to optimize efficiency. Recently, the test negative ion source NIO1 (60 keV, 9 beamlets with 15 mA H(-) each) has been designed and built at RFX (Padua) for negative ion production efficiency and the beam quality optimization. In this paper, a study proposal to use the NIO1 source also for a beam energy recovery test experiment is presented and a preliminary design of a negative ion beam collector with simulations of beam energy recovery is discussed.

To do so, the SmartCo injects the generated OMTDR signal at an extremity of the cable and then listens to the echoes created at each discontinuity of the cable characteristic impedance. Since soft defects result in faint reflected energy, they are hard to distinguish from the noise. Hence, the SmartCo uses an innovative approach based on advanced post-processing methods data fusion to eliminate false alarms and to determine the small soft fault position.

Abstract: The s-process is responsible of the synthesis of most of the nuclei in the mass range 90 ≤ A ≤ 208. It consists in a series of neutron capture reactions on seed nuclei followed by β-decays, since the neutron accretion rate is slower than the β-decay rate. Such small neutron flux is supplied by the 13C(α,n)16O reaction. It is active inside the helium-burning shell of asymptotic giant branch stars, at temperatures < 108 K, corresponding to an energy interval of 140–230 keV. In this region, the astrophysical S (E)-factor is dominated by the −3 keV sub-threshold resonance due to the 6.356 MeV level in 17O. In this work, we have applied the Trojan Horse Method (THM) to the 13C(6Li,n16O)d quasi-free reaction to extract the 6.356 MeV level resonance parameters, in particular the asymptotic normalization coefficient . A preliminary analysis of a partial data set has lead to , slightly larger than the values in the literature. However, the deduced 13C(α, n)16O reaction rate is in agreement with most results in the literature at ~ 108 K, with enhanced accuracy thanks to our innovative approach merging together ANC and THM.

Abstract: Megavolt ITER Injector Concept Advancement is the full scale prototype of the heating and current drive neutral beam injectors for ITER, to be built at Consorzio RFX (Padova). The engineering design of its components is challenging: the total heat loads they will be subjected to (expected between 2 and 19 MW), the high heat fluxes (up to 20 MW/m(2)), and the beam pulse duration up to 1 h, set demanding requirements for reliable active cooling circuits. In support of the design, the thermo-hydraulic behavior of each cooling circuit under steady state condition has been investigated by using one-dimensional models. The final results, obtained considering a number of optimizations for the cooling circuits, show that all the requirements in terms of flow rate, temperature, and pressure drop are properly fulfilled.

Abstract: For measuring fusion excitation functions, the activation technique with a stack of targets offers the considerable advantage that several reaction energies may be simultaneously measured by using one beam energy. However, its main drawback is the degradation of the beam quality as it passes through the stack due to statistical nature of energy loss processes and any non-uniformity of the stacked targets. If not taken properly into account, this degradation can lead to a wrong determination of the fusion excitation function. In this contribution some results of the investigation of this problem are reported.

Abstract: Marine bacteria (Bacillus cereus, Bacillus sphericus, Vibrio furnisii, and Brevundimonas vesicularis) were shown to degrade nylon 6 and 66 in mineral salt medium at 35 �C and pH of 7.5 under submerged enrichment conditions with the polymer as the sole carbon source. The degradation led to the formation of new functional groups NHCHO, CH3, CONH2, CHO and COOH. Maximum degradation was observed with Bacillus cereus for both the nylons. Average molecular weight decreased by 42% and 31% and weight decreased by 7% and 2% in the case of nylon 66 and nylon 6, respectively, over a period of three months. Differential scanning calorimetry showed a reduction in melting temperature (? of 1 �C) and enthalpies of fusion indicating decrease in crystallinity. Epi-fluorescent microscope of the degraded samples showed surface stripping and groves. The extent of degradation observed with the marine organisms was better than soil organisms reported in the literature. � 2007 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract: International audience; The study of the decay modes competition of the compound systems produced in thecollisions 78Kr+40Ca and 86Kr+48Ca at 10AMeV is presented. In particular, the N/Z entrance channelinfluence on the decay paths of the compound systems, directly connected to the isospin influence, isinvestigated. The experiment was performed at the INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Sud (LNS) inCatania by using the 4π multi-detector CHIMERA. Charge, mass, angular distributions andkinematical features of the reaction products were studied. The analysis shows some differences in thecontribution arising from the various reaction mechanisms for the neutron poor and neutron richsystems. Comparison with theoretical statistical and dynamical models are presented for the twosystems. Besides a study of the influence of the energy on the entrance channel is performed for the78Kr+40Ca reaction, by comparing the results of this experiment to those obtained for the same systemat 5.5 AMeV with the INDRA device at GANIL.

Abstract: A detection technique for high-efficiency measurements of fusion reactions with low-intensity radioactive beams was developed. The technique is based on a Multi-Sampling Ionization Chamber (MUSIC) operating as an active target and detection system, where the ionization gas acts as both target and counting gas. In this way, we can sample an excitation function in an energy range determined by the gas pressure, without changing the beam energy. The detector provides internal normalization to the incident beam and drastically reduces the measuring time. Abstract: A novel method for solving wave equations with spatial dispersion is presented, suitable for applications to ion cyclotron resonance heating. The method splits the wave operator into a dispersive and a non-dispersive part. The latter can be inverted with e.g. finite element methods. The spatial dispersion is evaluated using a wavelet representation of the dielectric kernel and added by means of iteration. Abstract: The interaction between fast particles and core turbulence has been established as a central issue for a tokamak reactor. Recent results predict significant enhancement of electromagnetic stabilisation of ITG turbulence in the presence of fast ions. However, most of these simulations were performed with the assumption of equivalent Maxwellian distributed particles, whereas to rigorously model fast ions, a non-Maxwellian background distribution function is needed. To this aim, the underlying equations in the gyrokinetic code GENE have been re-derived and implemented for a completely general background distribution function. After verification studies, a previous investigation on a particular JET plasma has been revised with linear simulations. The plasma is composed by Deuterium, electron, Carbon impurities, NBI fast Deuterium and ICRH 3He. Fast particle distributions have been modelled with a number of different analytic choices in order to study the impact of non-Maxwellian distributions on the plasma turbulence: slowing down and anisotropic Maxwellian. Linear growth rates are studied as a function of the wave number and compared with those obtained using an equivalent Maxwellian. Generally, the choice of the 3He distribution seems to have a stronger impact on the microinstabilities than that of the fast Deuterium., QC 20170308

Abstract: The tungsten enriched surface layers in two fusion-relevant EUROFER steel model samples, consisting of an iron-tungsten mixture exposed to sputtering by deuterium ions, were studied by Rutherford backscattering spectrometry and medium energy ion scattering. Exposure conditions were the same for the two samples and the total amount of tungsten atoms per unit area in the enriched layers were similar (2e15 and 2.4e15 atoms/cm2 respectively), despite slightly different initial atomic compositions. A depth profile featuring exponential decrease in tungsten content towards higher depths with 10-20 atomic percent of tungsten at the surface and a decay constant between 0.05 and 0.08 Å-1 was indicated in one sample, whereas only the total areal density of tungsten atoms was measured in the other. In addition, two different beams, iodine and chlorine, were employed for elastic recoil detection analysis of the deposited layer on a polished graphite plate from a test limiter in the TEXTOR tokamak following experiments with tungsten hexafluoride injection. The chlorine beam was preferred for tungsten analysis, mainly because it (as opposed to the iodine beam) does not give rise to problems with overlap of forward scattered beam particles and recoiled tungsten in the spectrum., QC 20171027

Abstract: Molybdenum mirrors were irradiated with Mo and He ions to simulate the effect of neutron irradiation on diagnostic first mirrors in next-generation fusion devices. Up to 30 dpa were produced under molybdenum irradiation leading to a slight decrease of reflectivity in the near infrared range. After 3×1017 cm-2 of helium irradiation, reflectivity decreased by up to 20%. Combined irradiation by helium and molybdenum led to similar effects on reflectivity as irradiation with helium alone. Ion beam analysis showed that only 7% of the implanted helium was retained in the first 40nm layer of the mirror. The structure of the near-surface layer after irradiation was studied with scanning transmission electron microscopy and the extent and size distribution of helium bubbles was documented. Abstract: i-vector modeling techniques have been successfully used for speaker clustering task recently. In this work, we propose the extraction of i-vectors from short-and long-term speech features, and the fusion of their PLDA scores within the frame of speaker diarization. Two sets of i-vectors are first extracted from short-term spectral and longterm voice-quality, prosodic and glottal to noise excitation ratio (GNE) features. Then, the PLDA scores of these two ivectors are fused for speaker clustering task. Experiments have been carried out on single and multiple site scenario test sets of Augmented Multi-party Interaction (AMI) corpus. Abstract: Recent JET experiments have been dedicated to the studies of fusion reactions between deuterium (D) and Helium-3 (3He) ions using neutral beam injection (NBI) in synergy with third harmonic ion cyclotron radio-frequency heating (ICRH) of the beam. This scenario generates a fast ion deuterium tail enhancing DD and D3He fusion reactions. Modelling and measuring the fast deuterium tail accurately is essential for quantifying the fusion products. This paper presents the modelling of the D distribution function resulting from the NBI+ICRF heating scheme, reinforced by a comparison with dedicated JET fast ion diagnostics, showing an overall good agreement. Finally, a sawtooth activity for these experiments has been observed and interpreted using SPOT/RFOF simulations in the framework of Porcelli's theoretical model, where NBI+ICRH accelerated ions are found to have a strong stabilizing effect, leading to monster sawteeth., This work has been carried out within the framework of the EUROfusion Consortium and has received funding from the Euratom research and training programme 2014-2018 under grant agreement No 633053. Abstract: The present paper reports the feasibility studies on joining low density steel powder metallurgical (PM) preforms with wrought copper. In joining of these materials by tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding, the welding current, pulse frequency and the density of the PM preforms were found to have a strong influence in controlling the weld strength. When welded with lower welding currents (continuous current), copper infiltrated into the PM steel and with higher currents, thermal effects dominated in controlling the weld strength. Through the application of a pulsed current, grains became more equiaxed due to dendrite fragmentation. Microstructural refinement was found to be at a maximum at an optimum pulse frequency, which resulted in maximum tensile strength. ? 2004 Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining.

Abstract: For low energy reaction studies involving radioactive ion beams, the experimental reaction yields are generally small due to the low intensity of the beams. For this reason, the stacked target technique has been often used to measure excitation functions. This technique offers considerable advantages since the reaction cross-section at several energies can be simultaneously measured. In a further effort to increase yields, thick targets are also employed. The main disadvantage of the method is the degradation of the beam quality as it passes through the stack due to the statistical nature of energy loss processes and any nonuniformity of the stacked targets. This degradation can lead to ambiguities of associating effective beam energies to reaction product yields for the targets within the stack and, as a consequence, to an error in the determination of the excitation function for the reaction under study. A thorough investigation of these ambiguities is reported, and a best practice procedure of analyzing data obtained using the stacked target technique with radioactive ion beams is recommended. Using this procedure a re-evaluation is reported of some previously published sub-barrier fusion data in order to demonstrate the possibility of misinterpretations of derived excitation functions. In addition, this best practice procedure has been used to evaluate, from a new data set, the sub-barrier fusion excitation function for the reaction Li-6+ Sn-120.

Abstract: First principle calculations of the gamma-ray energy spectrum arising from thermonuclear reactions without intrinsic broadening in fusion plasmas are presented, extending the theoretical framework needed to interpret measurements up to the accuracy level enabled by modern high resolution instruments. An analytical formula for the spectrum from Maxwellian plasmas, which extends to higher temperatures than the results previously available in the literature, has been derived and used to discuss the assumptions and limitations of earlier models. In case of radio-frequency injection, numerical results based on a Monte Carlo method are provided, focusing in particular on improved relations between the peak shift and width from the d(p, gamma)He-3 reaction and the temperature of protons accelerated by radio-frequency heating. The results presented in this paper significantly improve the accuracy of diagnostic information that can be extracted from the gamma-ray emission spectrum of fusion reactions without intrinsic broadening and are of relevance for applications to high performance plasmas of present and next generation devices.

Abstract: Spin distribution measurements were performed for the reaction 64 Ni + 100 Mo at three beam energies ranging from 230 to 260 MeV. Compound nucleus (CN) spin distributions were obtained channel selective for each evaporation residue populated by the de-excitation cascade. A comparison of the spin distribution at different beam energies indicates that its slope becomes steeper and steeper with increasing beam energy. This change in slope of the spin distribution is mainly due to the onset of fission competition with particle evaporation at higher beam energies.

Abstract: The energy and angular distributions of 3He and 4He ions produced in the 7Be+58Ni reaction at a bombarding energy of 22 MeV have been measured for the first time. The yield of the heavier helium isotope was four to five times more abundant than that of its lighter counterpart, ruling out the possibility that in this energy range the 7Be reaction dynamics is dominated by the exclusive breakup process 7Be → 3He + 4He (Sα = 1.586 MeV). Extensive kinematic and theoretical calculations suggest that the 3He ions mostly originate from the 4He-stripping process and the 4He production is mainly triggered by the fusion-evaporation channel. The role played by the breakup, 3He-stripping, 1n-stripping, and 1n-pickup processes is also discussed.

Abstract: The interaction between neutron-rich nuclei plays an important role for understanding the reaction mechanism of the fusion process as well as for the energy production through pycnonuclear reactions in the crust of neutron stars. We have performed the first measurements of the total fusion cross sections in the systems 10,14,15C+12C using a new active target-detector system. In the energy region accessible with existing radioactive beams, a good agreement between the experimental and theoretical cross sections is observed. Abstract: The Dynamical Dipole mode is a pre-equilibrium collective dipole oscillation predicted to be excited in charge asymmetric heavy-ion collisions. It decays emitting prompt gamma–rays and gives important information on the reaction dynamics. Its study could allow us to probe the density dependence of the symmetry energy in the Equation of State at sub-saturation densities, where this oscillation is active. Furthermore, its prompt radiation could be of interest for the synthesis of super-heavy elements in hot fusion reactions as it cools down the formed nucleus on the fusion path through emission of prompt gamma–rays. We investigated the Dynamical Dipole in fusion-evaporation and fission reactions for a composite system in the mass region of lead, a mass region never studied before. For this research the reactions 40Ca + 152Sm and 48Ca + 144Sm have been performed at ELAB = 11 MeV/nucleon at the Laboratori Nazionali del Sud, (LNS, Italy). The gamma-rays and the light charged particles were detected by using the MEDEA apparatus, made of 180 BaF2 scintillators and 6 Parallel Plates Avalanche Counters for fission fragments and evaporation residues. Any difference in the gamma-ray multiplicity spectra and the gamma-ray angular distributions of the two investigated reactions constitutes the signature of a pre-equilibrium process, i.e. the Dynamical Dipole mode excitation and its subsequent decay. From the study of these observables in the two reactions it was shown, in a model independent way, that the Dynamical Dipole survives in such a heavy composite system with similar features in both evaporation and fission events. Our results were compared with theoretical calculations performed within a BNV transport model, based on a collective bremsstrahlung analysis of the entrance channel reaction dynamics.

Abstract: A new measurement of the dynamical dipole emission was performed in the system O-16 + Sn-116 at 12 MeV/nucleon. These data, together with those measured at 8.1 MeV/nucleon and 15.6 MeV/nucleon on the same system, provide the dependence of the dynamical dipole total emission yield on the beam energy. The energy removed by preequilibrium charged particles emission was directly measured and this made possible the direct estimation of the compound nucleus excitation energy. The experimental results show a weak increase of the dynamical dipole total yield with beam energy and they are in agreement both in trend and in absolute values with the predictions of the theoretical model based on the Boltzmann-Nordheim-Vlasov approach. The measured gamma-ray angular distribution has a dipole character but with a strong quenching probably owing to the rotation of the dipolar axis during the fusion and thermalization processes.

Abstract: One of the main approaches to thermonuclear fusion relies on confining high temperature plasmas with properly shaped magnetic fields. The determination of the magnetic topology is, therefore, essential for controlling the experiments and for achieving the required performance. In Tokamaks, the reconstruction of the fields is typically formulated as a free boundary equilibrium problem, described by the Grad-Shafranov equation in toroidal geometry and axisymmetric configurations. Unfortunately, this results in mathematically very ill posed problems and, therefore, the quality of the equilibrium reconstructions depends sensitively on the measurements used as inputs and on the imposed constraints. In this paper, it is shown how the different diagnostics (Magnetics Measurements, Polarimetry and Motional Stark Effect), together with the edge current density and plasma pressure constraints, can have a significant impact on the quality of the equilibrium on JET. Results show that both the Polarimetry and Motional Stark Effect internal diagnostics are crucial in order to obtain reasonable safety factor profiles. The impact of the edge current density constraint is significant when the plasma is in the H-mode of confinement. In this plasma scenario the strike point positions and the plasma last closed flux surface can change even by centimetres, depending on the edge constraints, with a significant impact on the remapping of the equilibrium-dependent diagnostics and of pedestal physics studies. On the other hand and quite counter intuitively, the pressure constraint can severely affect the quality of the magnetic reconstructions in the core. These trends have been verified with several JET discharges and consistent results have been found. An interpretation of these results, as interplay between degrees of freedom and available measurements, is provided. The systematic analysis described in the paper emphasizes the importance of having sufficient diagnostic inputs and of properly validating the results of the codes with independent measurements.
