Abstract: An approach is presented to experimentally constrain previously unreachable (p, γ) reaction rates on nuclei far from stability in the astrophysical rp process. Energies of all critical resonances in the (57)Cu(p,γ)(58)Zn reaction are deduced by populating states in (58)Zn with a (d, n) reaction in inverse kinematics at 75 MeV/u, and detecting γ-ray-recoil coincidences with the state-of-the-art γ-ray tracking array GRETINA and the S800 spectrograph at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory. The results reduce the uncertainty in the (57)Cu(p,γ) reaction rate by several orders of magnitude. The effective lifetime of (56)Ni, an important waiting point in the rp process in x-ray bursts, can now be determined entirely from experimentally constrained reaction rates.

Abstract: The properties of pygmy dipole states in Pb-208 were investigated using the Pb-208(O-17, O-17'gamma) reaction at 340 MeV and measuring the gamma decay with high resolution with the AGATA demonstrator array. Cross sections and angular distributions of the emitted gamma rays and of the scattered particles were measured. The results are compared with (gamma, gamma') and (p, p') data. The data analysis with the distorted wave Born approximation approach gives a good description of the elastic scattering and of the inelastic excitation of the 2(+) and 3(-) states. For the dipole transitions a form factor obtained by folding a microscopically calculated transition density was used for the first time. This has allowed us to extract the isoscalar component of the 1(-) excited states from 4 to 8 MeV.

Abstract: The Gamow-Teller strength in the β(+) direction to (46)Sc was extracted via the (46)Ti(t,(3)He + γ) reaction at 115 MeV/u. The γ-ray coincidences served to precisely measure the very weak Gamow-Teller transition to a final state at 991 keV. Although this transition is weak, it is crucial for accurately estimating electron-capture rates in astrophysical scenarios with relatively low stellar densities and temperatures, such as presupernova stellar evolution. Shell-model calculations with different effective interactions in the pf shell-model space do not reproduce the experimental Gamow-Teller strengths, which is likely due to sd-shell admixtures. Calculations in the quasiparticle random phase approximation that are often used in astrophysical simulations also fail to reproduce the experimental Gamow-Teller strength distribution, leading to strongly overestimated electron-capture rates. Because reliable theoretical predictions of Gamow-Teller strengths are important for providing astrophysical electron-capture reaction rates for a broad set of nuclei in the lower pf shell, we conclude that further theoretical improvements are required to match astrophysical needs.

Abstract: Expérience GANIL/MUST2; International audience; We have measured the 72Zn(d, 3He) 71Cu proton pickup reaction in inverse kinematics at 38 MeV/u. A dedicated setup was developed to overcome the experimental challenges posed by the low cross section of the reaction and the low energy of the outgoing 3He particles. The excitation-energy spectrum was reconstructed and spectroscopic factors were obtained after analysis of the angular distributions in the finite-range Distorted-Wave Born Approximation (DWBA). The results show that unlike for the πf5/2 orbital, the πf7/2 single-particle strength is not appreciably affected by the addition of neutrons beyond N = 40.

Abstract: In this work we present the fully digital Front End Electronics (FEE) read out system developed for the GALILEO array. The system, developed in collaboration with the Advanced Gamma Tracking Array (AGATA) collaboration, is composed of three main blocks: preamplifiers, digitizers and preprocessing electronics. The slow control system contains a custom Linux driver, a dynamic library and a server implementing network services. The digital processing of the data from the GALILEO germanium detectors has demonstrated the capability to achieve an energy resolution of 1.53‰ at an energy of 1.33 MeV.

Abstract: The reduced transition probability B(E2;0(+)→2(+)) has been measured for the neutron-rich nucleus (74)Ni in an intermediate energy Coulomb excitation experiment performed at the National Superconducting Cyclotron Laboratory at Michigan State University. The obtained B(E2;0(+)→2(+))=642(-226)(+216) e(2) fm(4) value defines a trend which is unexpectedly small if referred to (70)Ni and to a previous indirect determination of the transition strength in (74)Ni. This indicates a reduced polarization of the Z=28 core by the valence neutrons. Calculations in the pfgd model space reproduce well the experimental result indicating that the B(E2) strength predominantly corresponds to neutron excitations. The ratio of the neutron and proton multipole matrix elements supports such an interpretation.

Abstract: The transition rates from the yrast ${2}^{+}$ and ${4}^{+}$ states in the self-conjugate $^{72}\mathrm{Kr}$ nucleus were studied via lifetime measurements employing the GRETINA array with a novel application of the recoil-distance method. The large collectivity observed for the ${4}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{2}^{+}$ transition suggests a prolate character of the excited states. The reduced collectivity previously reported for the ${2}^{+}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{0}^{+}$ transition was confirmed. The irregular behavior of collectivity points to the occurrence of a rapid oblate-prolate shape transition in $^{72}\mathrm{Kr}$, providing stringent tests for advanced theories to describe the shape coexistence and its evolution.

Abstract: The level structure of neutron-deficient 58 Zn has been extracted experimen- tally. This nucleus is important for the rapid proton-capture process. 58 Zn was produced by using a (d,n)-type transfer reaction on 57 Cu in inverse kinematics at beam energies of 75 MeV/u. Several -ray transitions have been identified. The experiment utilized the state-of-the-art GRETINA -ray energy tracking array in conjunction with the large- acceptance spectrometer S800 at NSCL. The excitation energies of the identified low- lying states in 58 Zn are important for constraining the 57 Cu(p, ) 58 Zn reaction rate under X-ray burst conditions.

Abstract: The degree of isospin mixing in the hot compound nucleus 80Zr has been extracted by statistical-model analysis of the γ-decay spectrum emitted in fusion reactions 40Ca+40Ca at Ebeam = 200 MeV and 37Cl+44Ca at Ebeam = 153 MeV. In the case of 40Ca+40Ca reaction an hindrance of first-step γ-decay is expected because in self-conjugate nuclei the E1 selection rules forbid the decay between states with isospin I=0. The results obtained at finite temperature (T ~ 2 MeV) have been used to extrapolate the degree of mixing at zero temperature

Abstract: A measurement of the high-lying states in 208Pb has been made using 17O beams at 20 MeV/u. The gamma decay following inelastic excitation was measured with the detector system AGATA Demonstrator based on segmented HPGe detectors, coupled to an array of large volume LaBr3:Ce scintillators and to an array of Si detectors. Preliminary results in comparison with (γ,γ’) data, for states in the 5-8 MeV energy interval, are presented.

Abstract: The nucleus 35S has been studied by in-beam ?-ray spectroscopy using the 24Mg(14N,3p) fusion-evaporation reaction at Elab=40 MeV. A level scheme extended up to J?=17/2+ at 8023 keV and J?=13/2- at 6352 keV has been established. Lifetimes of six excited states have been determined by applying the Doppler shift attenuation method. The experimental data have been compared with the results of large-scale shell model calculations performed using different effective interactions and model spaces allowing particle-hole excitations across the N=Z=20 shell gap. © 2014 American Physical Society.

Abstract: An angular correlation experiment was carried out for 33 S at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro with the gamma-ray detector array GASP. The reaction used was 24Mg(14N,α p)33S at a beam energy of 40MeV. An analysis of DCO ratios and triple gamma coincidences was performed. So far, a new level depopulated by 3 γ -ray transitions has been found and its spin was determined. The work for further extension of the level scheme is in progress.

Abstract: 14-bit Analog-to-Digital Converter ADC1413D as operated at 100 MS/s is here evaluated for high-resolution gamma-ray spectroscopy using the germanium crystals of the AGATA/GALILEO detectors. The performance of the chip in terms of noise is studied as a function of the amount of analog DC offset applied before digitization. Such a DC offset is considered for the purpose of dynamic range optimization. The quality of the ADC voltage reference is found to be paramount in this regard. Best results are obtained using an external voltage reference as strongly filtered for noise suppression. The in-chip voltage reference is found to be almost adequate for the considered application but a stronger internal filter would help. In fact when using the internal voltage reference the energy resolution as evaluated on the 59.54 keV line of 241Am worsens by up to 18%, when a DC offset of −36% Full Scale is enforced. No such effect is observed when using the filtered external reference.

Abstract: The ability of a cluster of three segmented Ge crystals (“AGATA module”) acting as a Compton polarimeter to measure the linear polarization of gamma rays has been investigated at an energy close to 511 keV. Partially polarized gamma rays have been produced by Coulomb excitation of the first excited state of 104 Pd a and 108 Pd.

Abstract: The fragmentation of relativistic uranium projectiles has been exploited at the Gesellschaft fur Schwerionenforschung laboratory to investigate the β decay of neutron-rich nuclei just beyond 208Pb. This paper reports on β-delayed γ decays of 211-213Tl, 215Pb, and 215-219Bi de-exciting states in the daughters 211-213Pb, 215Bi, and 215-219Po. The resulting partial level schemes, proposed with the help of systematics and shell-model calculations, are presented. The role of allowed Gamow-Teller and first-forbidden β transitions in this mass region is discussed. © 2014 American Physical Society.

223. Evolution of collectivity in 72Kr: evidence for rapid shape transition

Abstract: The transition rates from the yrast 2+ and 4+ states in the self-conjugate 72Kr nucleus were studied via lifetime measurements employing the GRETINA array with a novel application of the recoil-distance method. The large collectivity observed for the 4+→2+ transition suggests a prolate character of the excited states. The reduced collectivity previously reported for the 2+→0+ transition was confirmed. The irregular behavior of collectivity points to the occurrence of a rapid oblate-prolate shape transition in 72Kr, providing stringent tests for advanced theories to describe the shape coexistence and its evolution.

Abstract: Lifetimes of the low-lying (11/2-) states in 63,65Co have been measured employing the recoil distance doppler shift method (RDDS) with the AGATA γ-ray array and the PRISMA mass spectrometer. These nuclei were populated via a multinucleon transfer reaction by bombarding a 238U target with a beam of 64Ni. The experimental B(E2) reduced transition probabilities for 63,65Co are well reproduced by large-scale shell-model calculations that predict a constant trend of the B(E2) values up to the N=40 67Co isotope

Abstract: The K hindrance to the gamma decay is studied in the warm rotating W-174 nucleus, focusing on the weakening of the selection rules of the K quantum number with increasing excitation energy. W-174 was populated by the fusion reaction of Ti-50 (at 217 MeV) on a Te-128 target, and its gamma decay was detected by the AGATA Demonstrator array coupled to a BaF2 multiplicity filter at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro of INFN. A fluctuation analysis of gamma coincidence matrices gives a similar number of low-K and high-K discrete excited bands. The results are compared to simulations of the gamma-decay flow based on a microscopic cranked shell model at finite temperature in which the K mixing is governed by the interplay of Coriolis force with the residual interaction. Agreement between simulations and experiment is obtained only by hindering the E1 decay between low-K and high-K bands by an amount compatible with that determined by spectroscopic studies of K isomers in the same mass region, with a similar trend with excitation energy. The work indicates that K mixing due to temperature effects may play a leading role for the entire body of discrete excited bands, which probes the onset region of K weakening.

Abstract: International audience; The new-generation spectrometer AGATA, the Advanced GAmma Tracking Array, requires sub-nanosecond clock synchronization among readout and front-end electronics modules that may lie hundred meters apart. We call GTS (Global Trigger and Synchronization System) the infrastructure responsible for precise clock synchronization and for the trigger management of AGATA. It is made of a central trigger processor and nodes, connected in a tree structure by means of optical fibers operated at 2Gb/s. The GTS tree handles the synchronization and the trigger data flow, whereas the trigger processor analyses and eventually validates the trigger primitives centrally. Sub-nanosecond synchronization is achieved by measuring two different types of round-trip times and by automatically correcting for phase-shift differences. For a tree of depth two, the peak-to-peak clock jitter at each leaf is 70 ps; the mean phase difference is 180 ps, while the standard deviation over such phase difference, namely the phase equalization repeatability, is 20 ps. The GTS system has run flawlessly for the two-year long AGATA campaign, held at the INFN Legnaro National Laboratories, Italy, where five triple clusters of the AGATA sub-array were coupled with a variety of ancillary detectors.

Abstract: WOS: 000327494600037, gamma Rays and neutrons, emitted following spontaneous fission of Cf-252, were measured in an AGATA experiment performed at INFN Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro in Italy. The setup consisted of four AGATA triple cluster detectors (12 36 fold segmented high purity germanium crystals), placed at a distance of 50 cm from the source, and 16 HELENA BaF2 detectors. The aim of the experiment was to study the interaction of neutrons in the segmented high purity germanium detectors of AGATA and to investigate the possibility to discriminate neutrons and gamma rays with the gamma-ray tracking technique. The BaF2 detectors were used for a time measurement, which gave an independent discrimination of neutrons and gamma rays and which was used to optimise the gamma-ray tracking based neutron rejection methods. It was found that standard gamma-ray tracking, without any additional neutron rejection features, eliminates effectively most of the interaction points clue to recoiling Ge nuclei after elastic scattering of neutrons. Standard Cracking rejects also a significant amount of the events due to inelastic scattering of neutrons in the germanium crystals. Further enhancements of the neutron rejection was obtained by setting conditions on the following quantities, which were evaluated for each event by the Cracking algorithm: energy of the first and second interaction point, difference in the calculated incoming direction of the gamma ray, and figure-of-merit value. Abstract: International audience; The neutron-rich isotopes of tungsten, osmium and platinum have different shapes in their ground states and present also shape transitions phenomena. Spectroscopic information for these nuclei is scarce and often limited to the gamma rays from the decay of isomeric states. For the neutron-rich even-even osmium isotopes Os-194 and Os-198, a shape transition between a slightly prolate deformed to an oblate deformed ground state was deduced from the observed level schemes. For the even-even nucleus lying in between, Os-196, no gamma ray transition is known. In order to elucidate the shape transition and to test the nuclear models describing it, this region was investigated through gamma-ray spectroscopy using the AGATA demonstrator and the large acceptance heavy-ion spectrometer PRISMA at LNL, Italy. A two-nucleon transfer from a Pt-198 target to a stable Se-82 beam was utilized to populate medium-high spin states of Os-196. The analysis method and preliminary results, including the first life-time measurement of isomeric states with AGATA, are presented.

Abstract: Data from the highly segmented High-Purity Germanium (HPGe) detectors of the AGATA spectrometer show that segments are more sensitive to neutron damage than the central core contact. Calculations on the collection efficiency of charge carriers inside the HPGe detector were performed in order to understand this phenomenon. The trapping sensitivity, an expression based on the collection efficiencies for electrons and holes, is put forward to quantify the effect of charge carrier trapping. The sensitivity is evaluated for each position in the detector volume with respect to the different electrodes and the collected charge carrier type. Using the position information obtained by pulse shape analysis from the position-sensitive AGATA detectors, it is possible to correct for the energy deficit employing detector specific sensitivity values. We report on the successful correction of the energy peaks from heavily neutron-damaged AGATA detectors for core and segment electrode signals. The original energy resolution can optimally be recovered up to a certain quantifiable limit of degradation due to statistical fluctuations caused by trapping effects.

Abstract: Built-in redundancies in highly segmented high-purity Ge detectors are exploited to increase the energy resolution of these semiconductor devices for detection of electromagnetic radiation in the X-ray and γ-ray regime. The information of the two electronically decoupled independent measurements, the cathode and the anode electrodes, provides an improved signal-to-noise ratio through a combination of the individually measured signals performed on an event-by-event basis. The average energy resolution values of the AGATA triple cluster detector for an energy deposition of 60keV was measured to be 1.1 keV (FWHM) for the 36 segments and 1.2 keV for the core. The averaged signals of the core and the segments show an improved resolution value of 0.87 keV which is close to the expected theoretical limit. At higher γ-ray energy the averaging technique allows for an enhanced energy resolution with a FWHM of 2.15keV at 1.3MeV. By means of the position sensitive operation of AGATA a new value for the Fano factor was determined and the noise contributions to the FWHM of a γ-ray peak separated.

Abstract: Background: The FAST was a factorial trial in first-line treatment of advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), addressing the role of replacing cisplatin with a non-platinum agent. The prognostic and predictive effect of ERCC1/BRCA1 expression and ERCC1/XPD/XRCC1-3 gene polymorphisms on outcomes of patients was examined.Methods:Patients were randomised to receive treatment with or without cisplatin. ERCC1/BRCA1 expression was determined by immunohistochemistry. ERCC1 (C8092A, C118T), XPD (Lys751Gln), XRCC1 (Arg399Gln) and XRCC3 (Thr241Met) gene polymorphisms were evaluated on tumour DNA by TaqMan allelic discrimination assay.Results:Tumour samples were available from 110 of 433 patients enrolled: 54.7% were ERCC1 positive and 51.4% were BRCA1 positive. Overall, ERCC1-negative patients had better response rate (P=0.004), progression-free survival (P=0.023) and overall survival (P=0.012) compared with positive ones, with no statistically significant treatment interaction. The BRCA1-positive patients showed numerically better outcomes, although not statistically significant, with no treatment interaction. Among DNA repair gene polymorphisms, only XRCC1 Gln/Gln genotype evidenced a potential prognostic role (P=0.036).Conclusion:This study confirms the prognostic role of ERCC1 expression and XRCC1 (Arg399Gln) polymorphism in advanced NSCLC treated with first-line chemotherapy. Abstract: The A ≃ 60-70 mass region of neutron-rich nuclei with Z ≤ 28 presents several interesting properties when approaching N = 40. At this subshell closure a new region of deformation develops. From the experimental side, these nuclei can be populated by means of multi-nucleon and deep inelastic collisions. Recent results on the gamma-ray spectroscopy of the neutron-rich nuclei in this mass region are discussed. In particular, the evolution of the nuclear shape is studied in 65,67Co isotopes, populated by bombarding a 238U target with a 460 MeV 70Zn beam at the Legnaro National Laboratory. A shape-coexistence structure is observed in 67Co. The experimental results are interpreted within the shell model framework in a very large model space. These calculations are able to describe with good accuracy the excited states observed in 65,67Co, at the edge of the island of inversion at N=40.

Abstract: The low-spin level scheme of ${}^{68}$Ni was investigated following two-neutron-knockout and multinucleon-transfer reactions. The energy of the first excited state was determined to be ${E}_{x}({0}_{2}^{+})=1603.5(3)$ keV. Relative $B(E2)$ transition probabilities were deduced and compared with shell-model calculations using several modern effective interactions. Theory reproduces the data well, but indicates substantial mixing of multi-particle, multi-hole configurations for the lowest observed ${0}^{+}$ and ${2}^{+}$ states.

Abstract: International audience; Neutron-rich chlorine isotopes were populated in the Ar-40 + Pb-208 multiple transfer reaction via the -1p channels in a fragment-gamma coincident measurement employing the Prisma-Clara setup. New gamma transitions have been identified and, together with already available data, level schemes have been revised and compared with the results of large-scale sd-pf shell-model calculations. The evolution of the energy splitting between the s(1/2) and d(3/2) orbitals and the increased mixing of different proton configurations in the populated Cl isotopic chain have been deduced by inspecting the shell-model wave functions.

Abstract: Neutron-rich nuclei in the lead region, beyond N = 126, have been studied at the FRS-RISING setup at GSI, exploiting the fragmentation of a primary uranium beam. Two isomeric states have been identified in Hg-210: the 8(+) isomer expected from the seniority scheme in the vg(9/2) shell and a second one at low spin and low excitation energy. The decay strength of the 8(+) isomer confirms the need of effective three-body forces in the case of neutron-rich lead isotopes. The other unexpected low-lying isomer has been tentatively assigned as a 3(-) state, although this is in contrast with theoretical expectations. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: WOS: 000314826000009, The response of AGATA segmented HPGe detectors to gamma rays in the energy range 2-15 MeV was measured. The 15.1 MeV gamma rays were produced using the reaction d(B-11,n gamma)C-12 at E-beam=19.1 MeV, while gamma rays between 2 and 9 MeV were produced using an Am-Be-Fe radioactive source. The energy resolution and linearity were studied and the energy-to-pulse-height conversion resulted to be linear within 0.05%.Experimental interaction multiplicity distributions are discussed and compared with the results of Geant4 simulations. It is shown that the application of gamma-ray tracking allows a suppression of background radiation caused by n-capture in Ge nuclei. Finally the Doppler correction for the 15.1 MeV gamma line, performed using the position information extracted with Pulse-shape analysis is discussed. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Abstract: The nuclear structure of neutron-rich nuclei close to the double-magic nucleus 78Ni has been investigated by measuring the lifetime of excited states. In this contribution, it will be presented the lifetime of the Jπ = 7=2 excited state at 981 keV of the 71Cu isotope, measured using the AGATA Demonstrator coupled to the PRISMA spectrometer and the Köln plunger setup. Abstract: International audience; The revival of transfer reaction studies benefited from the construction of the new generation large solid angle spectrometers, coupled to large gamma arrays. The recent results of gamma-particle coincident measurements in Ca-40+Zr-96 and Ar-40+Pb-208 reactions demonstrate a strong interplay between single-particle and collective degrees of freedom that is pertinent to the reaction dynamics. The development of collectivity has been followed in odd Ar isotopes populated in the Ar-40+Pb-208 reaction through the excitation of the 11/2(-) states, understood as the coupling of single particle degrees of freedom to nuclear vibration quanta. Pair transfer modes is another important degree of freedom which is presently being studied with Prisma in inverse kinematics at energies far below the Coulomb barrier. First results from the Zr-96+Ca-40 reaction elucidate the role played by nucleon-nucleon correlation.

Abstract: Excited states of the $N=Z=33$ nucleus ${}^{66}$As have been populated in a fusion-evaporation reaction and studied using $\ensuremath{\gamma}$-ray spectroscopic techniques. Special emphasis was put into the search for candidates for the $T=1$ states. A new 3${}^{+}$ isomer has been observed with a lifetime of 1.1(3) ns. This is believed to be the predicted oblate shape isomer. The excited levels are discussed in terms of the shell model and of the complex excited Vampir approaches. Coulomb energy differences are determined from the comparison of the $T=1$ states with their analog partners. The unusual behavior of the Coulomb energy differences in the $A=70$ mass region is explained through different shape components (oblate and prolate) within the members of the same isospin multiplets. This breaking of the isospin symmetry is attributed to the correlations induced by the Coulomb interaction.

Abstract: We report on the observation of a new isomeric state in $^{68}$Ni. We suggest that the newly observed state at 168(1) keV above the first 2$^+$ state is a $\pi(2p-2h)$ 0$^{+}$ state across the major Z=28 shell gap. Comparison with theoretical calculations indicates a pure proton intruder configuration and the deduced low-lying structure of this key nucleus suggests a possible shape coexistence scenario involving a highly deformed state., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review C

Abstract: The heavy-ion reaction 22Ne+208Pb at 128 MeV beam energy has been studied using the PRISMA-CLARA experimental setup at Legnaro National Laboratories. Elastic, inelastic, and one-nucleon transfer differential cross sections are measured and global agreement is obtained with semiclassical and distorted-wave Born approximation (DWBA) calculations. In particular, the angular distribution of the 2+ state of 22Ne is analyzed by DWBA and a similar calculation is performed for the unstable 24Ne nucleus, using existing data from the reaction 24Ne+208Pb at 182 MeV (measured at SPIRAL with the VAMOS-EXOGAM setup). In both cases the DWBA model gives a good reproduction of the experiment, pointing to a strong reduction of the β2(C) charge deformation parameter in 24Ne. This follows the trend predicted for the evolution of the quadrupole deformation along the Ne isotopic chain.

Abstract: Multinucleon transfer reaction 40Ar+208Pb has been investigated with the PRISMA-CLARA experimental setup in LNL, INFN, Italy. The experimental differential cross sections have been obtained for different transfer channels by measuring more than Δθlab = 20° covered by three angular settings of PRISMA. Results have been compared with the semiclassical calculation GRAZING. Since the understanding of the reaction mechanism depends strongly on the determination of absolute cross section, effect of transport of ions through PRISMA has been studied via a Monte Carlo simulation code.

Abstract: The 14N(p,γ)15O reaction is the slowest process of the CN cycle, and thus it is of high astrophysical interest since it regulates the total rate of energy and neutrinos production through the cycle. The 14N+p ground state capture is strongly influenced by a sub-threshold resonance corresponding to the 6.79 MeV state in 15O. The width of this resonance is a major source of uncertainty in the extrapolation of the reaction cross section in the Gamow energy window. Preliminary results of a new Doppler Shift Attenuation measurement of the lifetime of the 6.79 MeV state in 15O are discussed. The level of interest was populated via the 2H(14N,n)15O reaction in inverse kinematics at 32 MeV beam energy. The gamma-rays emitted in the decay of the 6.79 MeV level to the ground state were detected with the AGATA Demonstrator array of high-purity germanium detectors. Abstract: WOS: 000300864200005, The Advanced GAmma Tracking Array (AGATA) is a European project to develop and operate the next generation gamma-ray spectrometer. AGATA is based on the technique of gamma-ray energy tracking in electrically segmented high-purity germanium crystals. This technique requires the accurate determination of the energy, time and position of every interaction as a gamma ray deposits its energy within the detector volume. Reconstruction of the full interaction path results in a detector with very high efficiency and excellent spectral response. The realisation of gamma-ray tracking and AGATA is a result of many technical advances. These include the development of encapsulated highly segmented germanium detectors assembled in a triple cluster detector cryostat, an electronics system with fast digital sampling and a data acquisition system to process the data at a high rate. The full characterisation of the crystals was measured and compared with detector-response simulations. This enabled pulse-shape analysis algorithms, to extract energy, time and position, to be employed. In addition, tracking algorithms for event reconstruction were developed. The first phase of AGATA is now complete and operational in its first physics campaign. In the future AGATA will be moved between laboratories in Europe and operated in a series of campaigns to take advantage of the different beams and facilities available to maximise its science output. 250. Shape coexistence far from stability

Abstract: Recent results on the gamma-ray spectroscopy of the neutron-rich nucleus 67Co, populated through multi-nucleon transfer reactions by bombarding a 238U target with a 460 MeV 70Zn beam at the Legnaro National Laboratory, are presented. The development of deformation in Co isotopes approaching the N=40 subshell closure is discussed within the shell model framework in a very large model space. These calculations are able to describe with good accuracy the excited states observed in 67Co, at the edge of the island of inversion at N=40, where a low lying highly deformed band coexists with a spherical structure.
