- Abstract
Inclusion in research systems (specifically, research training, universities, and the publishing and funding environment within higher education) is increasingly identified as a problem. An inclusive body of researchers is better equipped to produce relevant, actionable scholarship that accounts for diversity and difference. Why? There's a strong link between the background, interests, and life experiences of a researcher and the questions and research topics they pursue. Inclusion does not just mean incorporating phenotypically different researchers into existing mechanisms of knowledge production. Researchers with unique life experiences will bring with them unique ways of thinking, identifying problems and questions, developing models of research, and contributing to the field. True inclusion efforts move beyond "representing" diversity and instead will create space for diverse ways of observing, thinking, theorizing, hypothesizing, testing, interpreting, and validating in research systems. This report discusses how inclusion affects knowledge production, societal and economic consequences of non-inclusion in research systems, factors that can shape inclusion, and inclusion in the researcher pipeline.

BackgroundBurn injuries are common in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and their associated disability is tragic. This study is the first to explore burn scars in rural communities in Mozambique. This work also validated an innovate burn assessment tool, the Morphological African Scar Contractures Classification (MASCC), used to determine surgical need.MethodsUsing a stratified, population-weighted survey, the team interviewed randomly selected households from September 2012 to June 2013. Three rural districts (Chókwè, Nhamatanda, and Ribáuè) were selected to represent the southern, central and northern regions of the country. Injuries were recorded, documented with photographs, and approach to care was gathered. A panel of residents and surgeons reviewed the burn scar images using both the Vancouver Scar Scale and the MASCC, a validated visual scale that categorizes patients into four categories corresponding to levels of surgical intervention.ResultsOf the 6104 survey participants, 6% (n = 370) reported one or more burn injuries. Burn injuries were more common in females (57%) and most often occurred on the extremities. Individuals less than 25 years old had a significantly higher odds of reporting a burn scar compared to people older than 45 years. Based on the MASCC, 12% (n = 42) would benefit from surgery to treat contractures.ConclusionUntreated burn injuries are prevalent in rural Mozambique. Our study reveals a lack of access to surgical care in rural communities and demonstrates how the MASCC scale can be used to extend the reach of surgical assessment beyond the hospital through community health workers.

Type 2 diabetes (T2D) is associated with increased risk of fractures. However, it is unclear whether current osteoporosis treatments reduce fractures in individuals with diabetes. The aim of the study was to determine whether presence of T2D influences the efficacy of antiresorptive treatment for osteoporosis using the Foundation for the National Institutes of Health (FNIH)-American Society for Bone and Mineral Research (ASBMR)-Study to Advance Bone Mineral Density (BMD) as a Regulatory Endpoint (SABRE) cohort, which includes individual patient data from randomized trials of osteoporosis therapies. In this study we included 96,385 subjects, 6.8% of whom had T2D, from nine bisphosphonate trials, two selective estrogen receptor modulator (SERM) trials, two trials of menopausal hormone therapy, one denosumab trial, and one odanacatib trial. We used Cox regression to obtain the treatment hazard ratio (HR) for incident nonvertebral, hip, and all fractures and logistic regression to obtain the treatment odds ratio (OR) for incident morphometric vertebral fractures, separately for T2D and non-DM. We used linear regression to estimate the effect of treatment on 2-year change in BMD (n = 49,099) and 3-month to 12-month change in bone turnover markers (n = 12,701) by diabetes status. In all analyses, we assessed the interaction between treatment and diabetes status. In pooled analyses of all 15 trials, we found that diabetes did not impact treatment efficacy, with similar reductions in vertebral, nonvertebral, all, and hip fractures, increases in total hip and femoral neck BMD, and reductions in serum C-terminal cross-linking telopeptide (CTX), urinary N-telopeptide of type I collagen/creatinine (NTX/Cr) and procollagen type 1 N propeptide (P1NP) (all interactions p > 0.05). We found similar results for the pooled analysis of bisphosphonate trials. However, when we considered trials individually, we found a few interactions within individual studies between diabetes status and the effects of denosumab and odanacatib on fracture risk, change in BMD or bone turnover markers (BTMs). In sum, these results provide strong evidence that bisphosphonates and most licensed antiresorptive drugs are effective at reducing fracture risk and increasing BMD irrespective of diabetes status. © 2022 The Authors. melanoma ,training ,self-efficacy ,evaluation ,feedback - Abstract
Whack-a-Mole is a melanoma identification training game developed at the University of Miami to evaluate the effectiveness of different identification training techniques using immediate personalized feedback. Two widely implemented training systems are used to identify malignant melanoma through a skin exam: ABCDE, a mnemonic for the five factors that increase likely diagnoses, and the ugly duckling sign (UDS). The game system randomized the training types the player received, in addition to a hybrid approach and a control condition. The game delivered standard and motivational feedback to a subset of players in each of these conditions as they identified moles. Both the standard feedback and motivational feedback led to higher perceived self-efficacy as compared to conditions with no feedback, regardless of whether or not the player was successful at identifying malignant moles.

- Abstract
Literacy today relies on a readers' ability to analyse text critically. This case study investigated preservice teachers' critical analysis of media text containing visuals and representations. In particular, the analysis focused on mathematical factors that impact on readers' interpretation of diverse visuals. Data was gathered from the 23 preservice teachers, enrolled in the Graduate Diploma program at one Australian university. They participated in a series of mathematics learning sessions focused on the critical analysis of a selection of media items. The paper argues that the ability to critically analyse graphs and visuals relies on mathematical knowledge and that the ability to critically analyse such representations is a necessary component of mathematical literacy and everyday literacy. Mathematics teachers require well-developed critical analysis competencies to enable them, and ultimately their students, to critically analyse representations in everyday text. The paper illustrates that drawing on diverse visuals from the media can be productively used to develop critical analysis competencies.

General Relativity and Quantum Cosmology - Abstract
Results are presented for a semi-coherent search for continuous gravitational waves from the low-mass X-ray binary Scorpius X-1, using a hidden Markov model (HMM) to allow for spin wandering. This search improves on previous HMM-based searches of Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) data by including the orbital period in the search template grid, and by analyzing data from the latest (third) observing run (O3). In the frequency range searched, from 60 to 500 Hz, we find no evidence of gravitational radiation. This is the most sensitive search for Scorpius X-1 using a HMM to date. For the most sensitive sub-band, starting at $256.06$Hz, we report an upper limit on gravitational wave strain (at $95 \%$ confidence) of $h_{0}^{95\%}=6.16\times10^{-26}$, assuming the orbital inclination angle takes its electromagnetically restricted value $\iota=44^{\circ}$. The upper limits on gravitational wave strain reported here are on average a factor of $\sim 3$ lower than in the O2 HMM search. This is the first Scorpius X-1 HMM search with upper limits that reach below the indirect torque-balance limit for certain sub-bands, assuming $\iota=44^{\circ}$., Comment: 23 pages, 5 figures

Zeon algebras have proven to be useful for enumerating structures in graphs, such as paths, trails, cycles, matchings, cliques, and independent sets. In contrast to an ordinary graph, in which each edge connects exactly two vertices, an edge (or, "hyperedge") can join any number of vertices in a hypergraph. In game theory, hypergraphs are called simple games. Hypergraphs have been used for problems in biology, chemistry, image processing, wireless networks, and more. In the current work, zeon ("nil-Clifford") and "idem-Clifford" graph-theoretic methods are generalized to hypergraphs. In particular, zeon and idem-Clifford methods are used to enumerate paths, trails, independent sets, cliques, and matchings in hypergraphs. An approach for finding minimum hypergraph transversals is developed, and zeon formulations of some open hypergraph problems are presented.

We present results of an all-sky search for continuous gravitational waves which can be produced by spinning neutron stars with an asymmetry around their rotation axis, using data from the third observing run of the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors. Four different analysis methods are used to search in a gravitational-wave frequency band from 10 to 2048 Hz and a first frequency derivative from $-10^{-8}$ to $10^{-9}$ Hz/s. No statistically-significant periodic gravitational-wave signal is observed by any of the four searches. As a result, upper limits on the gravitational-wave strain amplitude $h_0$ are calculated. The best upper limits are obtained in the frequency range of 100 to 200 Hz and they are ${\sim}1.1\times10^{-25}$ at 95\% confidence-level. The minimum upper limit of $1.10\times10^{-25}$ is achieved at a frequency 111.5 Hz. We also place constraints on the rates and abundances of nearby planetary- and asteroid-mass primordial black holes that could give rise to continuous gravitational-wave signals., Comment: 23 main text pages, 17 figures

In trace-free Einstein gravity, the stress-energy tensor of matter is not necessarily conserved and so the theory offers a natural framework for interacting dark energy models where dark energy has a constant equation of state $w=-1$. We derive the equations of motion for linear cosmological perturbations in interacting dark energy models of this class, focusing on the scalar sector. Then, we consider a specific model where the energy-momentum transfer potential is proportional to the energy density of cold dark matter; this transfer potential has the effect of inducing an effective equation of state $w_{\rm eff}\neq0$ for cold dark matter. We analyze in detail the evolution of perturbations during radiation domination on super-Hubble scales, finding that the well-known large-scale instability that affects a large class of interacting dark energy models is absent in this model. To avoid a gradient instability, energy must flow from dark matter to dark energy. Finally, we show that interacting dark energy models with $w=-1$ are equivalent to a class of generalized dark matter models., Comment: 23 pages + references; accepted for publication in PRD

Isolated neutron stars that are asymmetric with respect to their spin axis are possible sources of detectable continuous gravitational waves. This paper presents a fully-coherent search for such signals from eighteen pulsars in data from LIGO and Virgo's third observing run (O3). For known pulsars, efficient and sensitive matched-filter searches can be carried out if one assumes the gravitational radiation is phase-locked to the electromagnetic emission. In the search presented here, we relax this assumption and allow the frequency and frequency time-derivative of the gravitational waves to vary in a small range around those inferred from electromagnetic observations. We find no evidence for continuous gravitational waves, and set upper limits on the strain amplitude for each target. These limits are more constraining for seven of the targets than the spin-down limit defined by ascribing all rotational energy loss to gravitational radiation. In an additional search we look in O3 data for long-duration (hours-months) transient gravitational waves in the aftermath of pulsar glitches for six targets with a total of nine glitches. We report two marginal outliers from this search, but find no clear evidence for such emission either. The resulting duration-dependent strain upper limits do not surpass indirect energy constraints for any of these targets., Comment: 37 pages, 9 figures, submitted to ApJ

The ever-increasing number of detections of gravitational waves (GWs) from compact binaries by the Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo detectors allows us to perform ever-more sensitive tests of general relativity (GR) in the dynamical and strong-field regime of gravity. We perform a suite of tests of GR using the compact binary signals observed during the second half of the third observing run of those detectors. We restrict our analysis to the 15 confident signals that have false alarm rates $\leq 10^{-3}\, {\rm yr}^{-1}$. In addition to signals consistent with binary black hole (BH) mergers, the new events include GW200115_042309, a signal consistent with a neutron star--BH merger. We find the residual power, after subtracting the best fit waveform from the data for each event, to be consistent with the detector noise. Additionally, we find all the post-Newtonian deformation coefficients to be consistent with the predictions from GR, with an improvement by a factor of ~2 in the -1PN parameter. We also find that the spin-induced quadrupole moments of the binary BH constituents are consistent with those of Kerr BHs in GR. We find no evidence for dispersion of GWs, non-GR modes of polarization, or post-merger echoes in the events that were analyzed. We update the bound on the mass of the graviton, at 90% credibility, to $m_g \leq 1.27 \times 10^{-23} \mathrm{eV}/c^2$. The final mass and final spin as inferred from the pre-merger and post-merger parts of the waveform are consistent with each other. The studies of the properties of the remnant BHs, including deviations of the quasi-normal mode frequencies and damping times, show consistency with the predictions of GR. In addition to considering signals individually, we also combine results from the catalog of GW signals to calculate more precise population constraints. We find no evidence in support of physics beyond GR.

224. Real Practical Policies for Real-World Learning: Lessons from America's New Business Plan

Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation
- Abstract
The nation's workforce demands look vastly different today than they did just a few years ago. The COVID-19 pandemic, economic challenges, and complex technological developments across all industries continue to change the way America works. Unfortunately, labor market demand has not coincided with similar shifts in America's education systems, leaving today's youth unprepared to enter the workforce upon receiving their high school degree and, in some cases, even bachelor's or graduate degrees. Instead, an over-emphasis on higher education as the gold standard has led to a workforce vacuum in which students lack real-world skills upon graduation. Policymakers must meet the moment by improving workforce programs and practices to tackle the greatest workforce challenges in recent times -- this brief provides some recommendations on how to do just that.

Accurately quantifying high-resolution field-scale soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks is challenging yet crucial for improving site-specific land management and carbon accounting. This challenge is even greater when the study units are large heterogenous ranches. This study utilizes a digital soil mapping (DSM) approach and a U.S. legacy soil dataset, combined with soil, climate, biotic, and topographic covariate datasets, to design a targeted soil sampling plan for acquiring local samples. The resulting local samples were then used in combination with the legacy data to build optimal ranch-scale SOC stock models. We provide an example of this approach using ranch units in the western U.S. as a case study. In our approach we first applied a clustering analysis to generate spatial clusters. This was followed by adopting a conditioned Latin hypercube sampling scheme within each cluster, to generate sets of strategically selected local sampling points. The local samples required for improved estimates of SOC stocks were determined to have a sample size of 15 and 40 soil cores, within the respective 13 and 36 km2 parcels. While our modeling results for SOC concentrations at a relatively homogeneous site in eastern Montana showed a significant two-fold improvement in model fit when using individually selected calibration datasets for each point, as opposed to selecting the calibration dataset as a whole at the ranch level, the disparity between the pixel- and ranch-based models was inconsequential for the other two ranch sites in Colorado that were more spatially diverse in terms of land management and vegetation cover. Compared to SOC concentration models (R2 between 0.3 and 0.7), the performance of models for bulk density (BD) (R2

Abstract Dust dynamics influence planetary atmospheres. However, the settling velocity of dust—and thus its residence time in the atmosphere—is often mispredicted. Challenging, indirect experiments involving few ideal particles revealed that dust settling velocity deviates from Stokes' law under rarefied atmospheres. While useful, such experiments are inadequate to simulate more complex scenarios, including variable particles sizes and shapes. Here, we present direct measurements of settling velocity for spherical particles under Earth‐to‐Mars atmospheric pressures using time‐resolved particle image velocimetry (TR‐PIV), and validate their robustness with existing models. Our results demonstrate that TR‐PIV provides a relatively simple approach to quantifying dust settling velocity from direct observations of over 10,000 particles, enabling systematic investigations of dust settling under realistic scenarios. Such experiments will have significant implications for our understanding of Mars' past, present, and future ‐ from providing a tool to decipher its sedimentary record to enhancing predictive capabilities of atmospheric models.

Surgery ,RD1-811 - Abstract
Background:. Few dedicated, funded clinical research fellowship positions exist in plastic surgery. This study provides insights from an established clinical research fellowship, highlighting its educational impact and confirming the impact of positive institutional support and a collaborative-first approach. Methods:. All research fellows within the program from 2008 to 2020 were examined during their year of employment and subsequent 2 years. Internal and external collaboration trends were assessed using PubMed affiliations. Correlation between external collaborations and research impact were examined. Research impact was characterized by publication count, journal impact factor, and journal diversity. Results:. Thirty-one research fellows were identified, with a 100% match rate. Four phases of development were identified, and a three-period cycle of productivity was noted to occur every 3 years. A shift toward more external collaborations occurred after 2016 (P = 0.008). A positive correlation was observed between external collaborations and academic output (r = 0.72, P = 0.004), journal diversity (r = 0.74, P = 0.004), and journal impact (r = 0.63, P < 0.05). Significant growth was observed in the collaborative networks (P = 0.002), publications (P = 0.003), journal diversity (P < 0.001), and research personnel (P = 0.002). Conclusions:. As a result of our strategic decision to engage collaborators across multiple disciplines, there is discernible improvement in measurable impact, contributing to the growth of our program. Dedicating resources to foster deeper collaborations can enrich the field of plastic surgery research, recognizing that this investment fuels the cycle of productivity, offering promising returns to the future.

AimTo review the international evidence base on interventions to support the mental health of family carers of children with brain injuries in low and middle income countries (LMIC).MethodsSearches were conducted with five electronic databases (Pubmed, Web of Science, Embase, PsycINFO, CINAHL) using search terms related to “family carers”, “brain injury”, “children” and “low and middle income countries”. Studies were independently screened using predetermined eligibility criteria by two authors. Data were extracted from included studies using standardised data extraction and quality appraisal tools. These data were then subjected to narrative synthesis. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines were used to govern the review process.FindingsOne study met our inclusion criteria and described an acquired brain injury called nodding syndrome which occurs in Sub-Saharan Africa. The study was conducted in Ghana and provided group-based psychotherapy to carers and their children. As such we found no study which sought to solely support the mental health of family carers.ConclusionsThere has been a lack of focus in the literature on the mental health of family carers of children with brain injuries in LMIC. Considering the vital importance of caregivers in supporting their children it is imperative that service providers and researchers devise programmes to better meet their needs. The mental health of family carers should be better supported to improve their overall wellbeing, which will in turn improve the wellbeing of their children.

Cyclospora cayetanensis is a coccidian parasite of the phylum Apicomplexa that causes cyclosporiasis, a human-specific gastrointestinal disease. Unlike most enteric pathogens, C. cayetanensis does not infect via direct fecal–oral transmission between humans because shed oocysts must be exposed to environmental triggers prior to becoming infectious. The development of specific and sensitive detection methods for C. cayetanensis is crucial to effectively address data gaps and provide regulatory support during outbreak investigations. In this study, new more specific molecular markers for the detection of C. cayetanensis were developed based on updated genomic databases of Apicomplexa mitochondrial sequences. Novel alternative reagents and supplies, as well as optimization protocols, were tested in spiked produce and agricultural water samples. The selected Mit1C primers and probe combined showed at least 13 mismatches to other related species. The new optimized qualitative real-time PCR assay with modifications to sample processing and replacement of discontinued items produced results comparable to the previously validated methods. In conclusion, the new optimized qualitative Mit1C real-time PCR assay demonstrated an increase in its specificity in comparison to other detection methods previously published, while it showed to be robust and as sensitive as the previously validated method at the FDA. This study has also expanded the array of PCR reagents that can be used to detect C. cayetanensis in produce and agricultural water samples and provided several improvements to the method for detection in agricultural water including replacements for discontinued items and a new dialysis filter for water filtration.

Dopamine axons are the only axons known to grow during adolescence. Here, using rodent models, we examined how two proteins, Netrin-1 and its receptor, UNC5C, guide dopamine axons toward the prefrontal cortex and shape behaviour. We demonstrate in mice (Mus musculus) that dopamine axons reach the cortex through a transient gradient of Netrin-1-expressing cells – disrupting this gradient reroutes axons away from their target. Using a seasonal model (Siberian hamsters; Phodopus sungorus) we find that mesocortical dopamine development can be regulated by a natural environmental cue (daylength) in a sexually dimorphic manner – delayed in males, but advanced in females. The timings of dopamine axon growth and UNC5C expression are always phase-locked. Adolescence is an ill-defined, transitional period; we pinpoint neurodevelopmental markers underlying this period.

Abstract Impact craters that form on every planetary body provide a record of planetary surface evolution. On heavily cratered surfaces, new craters that form often overlap antecedent craters, but it is unknown how the presence of antecedent craters alters impact crater formation. We use overlapping complex crater pairs on the lunar surface to constrain this process and find that crater rims are systematically lower where they intersect antecedent crater basins. The rim morphology of the new crater depends on the depth of the antecedent crater and the degree of overlap between the craters. Our observations suggest that new craters do not always obliterate underlying topography and that transient rim collapse is altered by antecedent topography. This study represents the first formalization of the influence of antecedent topography on rim morphology and provides process insight into a common impact scenario relevant to the geology of potential Artemis landing sites.

Objectives: We sought to compare the prevalence of serious bacterial infections (SBI; urinary tract infection, bacteremia, and/or meningitis) and invasive bacterial infections (IBI; bacteremia and/or meningitis) among infants with hypothermia with positive vs negative respiratory pathogen testing. Study design: We conducted a multicenter retrospective cohort study of infants ≤90 days presenting to an emergency department or directly admitted to a hospital from September 1, 2016, to May 5, 2021, with reported or documented hypothermia (≤36°C). Positive respiratory pathogen testing included positive single or multiplex nucleic acid amplification testing. The primary outcome was prevalence of SBI, defined as positive blood, urine, and/or cerebrospinal fluid culture and antibiotic treatment course; the prevalence of SBI and IBI was compared between infants with positive vs negative respiratory pathogen tests using the χ2 test. Results: Respiratory pathogen testing was obtained in 40.6% (446/1098) of infants with hypothermia; of those, 24.9% (111/446) had a positive respiratory pathogen result. Infants with a positive respiratory pathogen result were more often older, ill-appearing at presentation, and evaluated during fall/winter months. The prevalence of SBI in our cohort was 7.4%, and the prevalence of IBI was 4.5%. There were no associations between respiratory pathogen test result and SBI or IBI. Conclusions: Most young infants with hypothermia evaluated did not have respiratory pathogen testing performed. The diagnosis of SBI or IBI was not associated with a positive respiratory pathogen test. Further research is needed to understand the utility of respiratory pathogen testing in risk stratification for infants with hypothermia.

The question of whether SARS-CoV-2 is mainly transmitted by droplets or aerosols has been highly controversial. We sought to explain this controversy through a historical analysis of transmission research in other diseases. For most of human history, the dominant paradigm was that many diseases were carried by the air, often over long distances and in a phantasmagorical way. This miasmatic paradigm was challenged in the mid to late 19th century with the rise of germ theory, and as diseases such as cholera, puerperal fever, and malaria were found to actually transmit in other ways. Motivated by his views on the importance of contact/droplet infection, and the resistance he encountered from the remaining influence of miasma theory, prominent public health official Charles Chapin in 1910 helped initiate a successful paradigm shift, deeming airborne transmission most unlikely. This new paradigm became dominant. However, the lack of understanding of aerosols led to systematic errors in the interpretation of research evidence on transmission pathways. For the next five decades, airborne transmission was considered of negligible or minor importance for all major respiratory diseases, until a demonstration of airborne transmission of tuberculosis (which had been mistakenly thought to be transmitted by droplets) in 1962. The contact/droplet paradigm remained dominant, and only a few diseases were widely accepted as airborne before COVID-19: those that were clearly transmitted to people not in the same room. The acceleration of interdisciplinary research inspired by the COVID-19 pandemic has shown that airborne transmission is a major mode of transmission for this disease, and is likely to be significant for many respiratory infectious diseases.

Hispanic youth represent one of the fastest-growing minority groups. Yet, we know little about Hispanic adolescents' response to empirically-supported interventions for adolescent addiction, including motivational interviewing (MI). This randomized controlled trial (RCT) compared MI to an active educational treatment for adolescent alcohol and cannabis use (alcohol and cannabis education; ACE). Adolescents who regularly use substances (N = 448; n = 347 Hispanic; n = 101 non-Hispanic white; ages 13-18) were randomized to two 1-hr individual sessions of MI or ACE. We examined 6-month outcomes and mechanisms of change across Hispanic and non-Hispanic white youth. Treatment response was comparable across ethnicities (Hispanic vs. non-Hispanic white youth). Additionally, adolescents in the MI condition showed greater reductions in alcohol use compared to those in ACE, with support for motivation and self-efficacy as mechanisms of treatment response. Direct effects of MI on cannabis use were not observed; however, a significant indirect effect of motivation was observed for reductions in cannabis use. Data support the efficacy of MI in reducing adolescent alcohol use, through the vehicle of enhanced motivation and self-efficacy. While consistent treatment response was observed for adolescent alcohol use across ethnicities (Hispanic vs. non-Hispanic white), further exploration into potential underexplored mechanisms of Hispanic adolescents' treatment response is requisite to strengthening prevention and intervention programming for Hispanic adolescents' cannabis use. BackgroundAlthough a relatively large body of research has identified multiple factors associated with adolescent substance use, less is known about earlier substance-related factors during preadolescence, including curiosity to use substances. The present study examined individual-, peer-, and parent-level domains pertaining to substance use and how these domains vary by sociodemographic subgroups and substance type.MethodsParticipants were 11,864 9- and 10-year-olds from the baseline sample of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study. Youth-reported measures were curiosity to use substances and perceived peer substance use. Parent-reported measures were availability of and rules about substances. Generalized logistic mixed models (GLMM) were used to compare these measures across alcohol, nicotine, and marijuana and across sociodemographic subgroupings (sex, race/ethnicity, household income, and family history of alcohol problems). GLMM was then used to examine predictors of curiosity to use by substance type.ResultsThe most striking descriptive differences were found between race/ethnicity and income categories (e.g., positive associations between greater income and greater availability of alcohol). In multivariable analyses, greater curiosity to use alcohol was associated with being male, higher household income, perceived peer alcohol use, and easy alcohol availability; greater curiosity to use nicotine was associated with being male, perceived peer cigarette use, easy availability of cigarettes, and no parental rules about cigarette use.ConclusionsThis study identified substance use-related individual-, peer-, and parent-level factors among a diverse, national sample. Findings highlight the importance of considering sociodemographic and substance-specific variability and may help identify risk and protective factors preceding adolescent substance use.
