Coronary artery disease (CAD) mortality and morbidity is present in the European continent in a four-fold gradient across populations, from the South (Spain and France) with the lowest CAD mortality, towards the North (Finland and UK). This observed gradient has not been fully explained by classical or single genetic risk factors, resulting in some cases in the so called Southern European or Mediterranean paradox. Here we approached population genetic risk estimates using genetic risk scores (GRS) constructed with single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) from nitric oxide synthases (NOS) genes. These SNPs appeared to be associated with myocardial infarction (MI) in 2165 cases and 2153 controls. The GRSs were computed in 34 general European populations. Although the contribution of these GRS was lower than 1% between cases and controls, the mean GRS per population was positively correlated with coronary incidence explaining 65-85% of the variation among populations (67% in women and 86% in men). This large contribution to CAD incidence variation among populations might be a result of colinearity with several other common genetic and environmental factors. These results are not consistent with the cardiovascular Mediterranean paradox for genetics and support a CAD genetic architecture mainly based on combinations of common genetic polymorphisms. Population genetic risk scores is a promising approach in public health interventions to develop lifestyle programs and prevent intermediate risk factors in certain subpopulations with specific genetic predisposition.

The diversity of ferns and lycophytes of Corrientes province, Argentina is not well understood. Our field work in the Mburucuyá National Park in Corrientes province as well as a literature review finds 29 genera and 48 infrageneric taxa of ferns and lycophytes for this Park. A comparison of the Park's species diversity with other protected areas in northeastern Argentina using Jaccard's similarity coefficient and the infrageneric taxa biodiversity index proposed by Squeo et al. (1998) are analized. A key to the Park's ferns and lycophytes genera is provided.

LiOsO
3 undergoes a continuous transition from a centrosymmetric R 3 ¯ c structure to a polarR 3c structure atT = 140 K. By combining transport measurements and first-principles calculations, we find thats T is enhanced by applied pressures, and it reaches a value of ∼250 K at ∼6.5 GPa. The enhancement is due to the fact that the polars R 3c structure of LiOsO3 has a smaller volume than the centrosymmetric R 3 ¯ c structure. Pressure generically favors the structure with the smallest volume, and therefore further stabilizes the polarR 3c structure over the R 3 ¯ c structure, leading to the increase inT . - Abstract
Statin therapy reduces low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol levels and the risk of cardiovascular events, but whether the addition of ezetimibe, a nonstatin drug that reduces intestinal cholesterol absorption, can reduce the rate of cardiovascular events further is not known. We conducted a double-blind, randomized trial involving 18,144 patients who had been hospitalized for an acute coronary syndrome within the preceding 10 days and had LDL cholesterol levels of 50 to 100 mg per deciliter (1.3 to 2.6 mmol per liter) if they were receiving lipid-lowering therapy or 50 to 125 mg per deciliter (1.3 to 3.2 mmol per liter) if they were not receiving lipid-lowering therapy. The combination of simvastatin (40 mg) and ezetimibe (10 mg) (simvastatin-ezetimibe) was compared with simvastatin (40 mg) and placebo (simvastatin monotherapy). The primary end point was a composite of cardiovascular death, nonfatal myocardial infarction, unstable angina requiring rehospitalization, coronary revascularization (≥30 days after randomization), or nonfatal stroke. The median follow-up was 6 years. The median time-weighted average LDL cholesterol level during the study was 53.7 mg per deciliter (1.4 mmol per liter) in the simvastatin-ezetimibe group, as compared with 69.5 mg per deciliter (1.8 mmol per liter) in the simvastatin-monotherapy group (P<0.001). The Kaplan-Meier event rate for the primary end point at 7 years was 32.7% in the simvastatin-ezetimibe group, as compared with 34.7% in the simvastatin-monotherapy group (absolute risk difference, 2.0 percentage points; hazard ratio, 0.936; 95% confidence interval, 0.89 to 0.99; P=0.016). Rates of prespecified muscle, gallbladder, and hepatic adverse effects and cancer were similar in the two groups. When added to statin therapy, ezetimibe resulted in incremental lowering of LDL cholesterol levels and improved cardiovascular outcomes. Moreover, lowering LDL cholesterol to levels below previous targets provided additional benef

FRPs are often used in reinforced concrete, since concrete has a low modulus of elasticity and is more susceptible to exhibit cracks and brittle behavior. However, FRPs are not frequently used to repair steel structures because they are more ductile and have a

Fresh and dried raspberries prepared by freeze drying (FD), microwave-vacuum (MIVAC), hot-air drying (HAD), and a combination of hot-air drying and microwave-vacuum (HAD/MIVAC) drying methods were evaluated for polyphenol retention, total polyphenol and anthocyanin contents, total antioxidant capacity, and antiadipogenic activity (the inhibition of fat cell development). Ellagic acid and quercetin were present in the largest concentrations in fresh and dehydrated raspberries. Dehydration led to a loss of polyphenols and anthocyanins and antioxidant capacity. Polyphenols (aglycone form) were retained in the greatest amount: 20% (freeze dried) to 30% (HAD/MIVAC) (fresh = 100%). A total of 30% of polyphenols (glycoside form) were retained in raspberries dried by the HAD/MIVAC methods with 5% of retention observed for raspberries dried by FD, HAD, or MIVAC. FD and MIVAC resulted in higher retention of anthocyanins (aglycone form) than other drying methods. It was also observed that antioxidant activity was reduced by dehydration. Adipogenesis was inhibited by polyphenolic glycosides (30%) and aglycones (30% to 40%) in fresh and HAD/MIVAC raspberries. Extracts from dried raspberries by HAD/MIVAC methods were relatively more effective at inhibiting adipogenesis compared to HAD and FD dried raspberries.

FIT3D is a Toolbox built for Matlab that aims at unifying and distributing a set of tools that will allow the researcher to obtain a complete 3D model from a set of calibrated images. In this paper we motivate and present the structure of the toolbox in a tutorial and example based approach. Given its flexibility and scope we believe that FIT3D represents an exciting opportunity for researchers that want to apply one particular method with real data without the need for extensive additional programming.

ComputingMethodologies_IMAGEPROCESSINGANDCOMPUTERVISION - Abstract
We study the problem of mapping a large indoor environment using an omnivideo camera. Local features from omnivideo images and epipolar geometry are used to compute the relative pose between pairs of images. These poses are then used in an Extended Information Filter using a trajectory based representation where only the robot poses corresponding to captured images are reconstructed. The features with the geometric constraints also give a robust similarity measure that is used for data association. Our experiments show that an accurate map can be built in real time of a small office environment. For large environments, big loops can be closed and a map can be built in nearly linear time.

Blueberries (Vaccinium corymbosum L.) were dried combining microwave-vacuum, hot-air drying and freeze drying technologies to retain their nutritional value. Polyphenol retention, total polyphenols, anthocyanins, and antioxidant activity were evaluated in dried blueberries. Glycoside compounds for ellagic acid, quercetin, and kaempferol exhibited a higher retention than phloridzin, and R- and S-naringin in dried blueberries following dehydration. Freeze and HA-MIVAC® dried blueberries had a higher retention of total polyphenols and anthocyanins. Freeze dried blueberries had higher antioxidant activity, followed by the combination of HA-MIVAC®, MIVAC® and HA drying methods. FD, HA-MIVAC® and MIVAC® treated blueberries had a higher retention of individual polyphenols than HA treated blueberries, indicating that the nutritional properties of berries may be retained to a greater extent when these processes are employed.

Robotics - Abstract
SLAMstands for Simultaneous Localization AndMapping. It is a fundamental topic in Autonomous Systems and Robotics as it represents one of the most basic skills that any robot requires in order to be truly autonomous. This skill will allow a robot placed in an unknown environment at an unknown location to simultaneously build a consistent spatial representation (a map) and determine its location within this map. The classical approach to solve the SLAM problem was presented long ago [21] and many alternative solutions have been published since. The objective of any SLAM algorithm is to estimate as accurately as possible both the map and the robot location and their uncertainties based on the information conveyed by one or more sensors. The potential application of SLAM is incredibly wide, ranging from indoor and outdoor robots to underwater and aerial vehicles. Despite the fact that the SLAM problem is considered theoretically solved, many new developments are published every year that aim at the definition of a simple, practical and affordable solution, and try to overcome many of the practical issues that remain unsolved.

We present here a mean-value theorem that generalizes the Taylor-Lagrange formula. The result arises in a natural way when one studies the asymptotic behavior of the remainder term of the formula. As an application of our result, we derive several numerical schemes to approximate the solution to initial-valued first order differential equations

The issue is closed by a fourth article in which Juli Esteban reflects about the capacity, the tools and the ways in which physical planning can influence the dynamics of location of industrial estates. Starting with the definition of a set of guiding principles that seek to promote coexistence with other activities and to rationalize their settlement, the author refers the spatial and temporal difficulties that arise when a range of territorial plans attempt to establish guidelines for the choice of sites, sizes and mixed-used patterns, as well as to impose an urban model of concentration and proximity. In order to go beyond these difficulties he proposes some planning techniques, such as the regulation of the spatial distribution of both already-known processes and unexpected opportunities for the siting of new activities., Cierra esta edición un cuarto artículo, donde Juli Esteban reflexiona sobre la capacidad, las herramientas y las formas como la planificación física puede incidir en las dinámicas de localización de la actividad económica. Així doncs, si per a estudiar el canvi climàtic es fan servir dades indirectes provinents de la vegetació, com ara el pol·len o els carbons vegetals, cal tenir en compte la influència humana com a factor distorsionador del senyal climàtic., Pollen analysis of the sedimentary record of Lake Burg (Pyrenees, Spain) indicates a significant climatic oscillation during the Holocene, which, in addition to determining plant development, played a fundamental role in the development of anthropic activities and in human occupation of the High Pyrenees. This analysis has also been used to show how different degrees of human perturbation have repeatedly modified the environment. It is therefore not possible to study the current dynamics of the vegetation landscape without taking into account the combined effect of past human impacts responsible for its evolution. Consequently, when vegetation proxies, such as pollen or charcoal, are used to study climate change, it is also necessary to consider human influence as a distorting factor of the climate signal.

The genus Ophioglossum has around 25 species with a nearly cosmopolitan distribution. It has historically posed a number of taxonomic problems due to the lack of morphological characters upon which to base species delimitations. In order to address this, we analyzed the sculpture patterns of spores from ten critical taxa from southern South America. Palynological data was compared with the morphology of the sporophyte. The sculpturing pattern was the most valuable and consistent taxonomic character upon which to base species delimitation in Ophioglossum. Nomenclatural types of studied species were examined. The name Ophioglossum melipillense is reinstated and the other species recognized to the genus Ophioglossum s.s. in this region are the following: O. crotalophoroides, O. nudicaule, O. opacum, and O. vulgatum. Ophioglossum fernandezianum appears to be a doubtful species. Ophioglossum lusitanicum is excluded from the study area, but the lectotype of O. lusitanicum is designated, and a revised synonymy is presented., Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Museo

[EN]In this communication, an analysis of winter mean minimum temperatures at high elevation sites of the Eastern Pyrenees is carried out, indicating a likely disruption of the warming detected in mid-twentieth century. The results also detect a noticeable negative oscillation, in close relation to the inflection of the North Atlantic Oscillation index highlighted from 1990 until 2006.

Despite phytoliths having been used to understand past human use of plants and palaeoenvironment in Middle Paleolithic sites, little is known on this aspect in the well-documented central region of Mediterranean Iberia. This paper presents the first phytolith and mineralogical study conducted at Abrigo de la Quebrada (Chelva, Valencia). Forty-one samples were analyzed through phytoliths and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) from different areas, stratigraphic levels, and archeological contexts (hearth, hearth-related, and non-hearth-related sediments) of the shelter. The results obtained point towards a different pattern of preservation in the site depending firstly on the stratigraphy and secondly on the area where the samples were collected. Postdepositional processes that may have chemically affected phytolith preservation are discussed. Grasses are the main plant component identified in all the samples while woody plants are scarce. The abundance of grasses in the non-hearth-related sediments might be related, at least partially, to the dispersion of ashes from hearths, as indicated by the FTIR results. The results are indicative of an occupation of the site during the spring-autumn season. At this time, the area would be dominated by a semi-open environment with supramediterranean vegetation. Background Metformin is an anti-hyperglycaemic agent used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. Type 2 diabetes may present long-term complications: micro- (retinopathy, nephropathy and neuropathy) and macrovascular (stroke, myocardial infarction and peripheral vascular disease). Two meta-analyses have been published before, although only secondary outcomes were assessed. Objectives To assess the effects of metformin monotherapy on mortality, morbidity, quality of life, glycaemic control, body weight, lipid levels, blood pressure, insulinaemia, and albuminuria in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Search strategy Studies were obtained from computerised searches of multiple electronic databases and hand searches of reference lists of relevant trials identified. Date of last search: September 2003. Selection criteria Trials fulfilling the following inclusion criteria: Diabetes mellitus type 2, metformin versus any other oral intervention, assessment of relevant clinical outcome measures, use of random allocation. Data collection and analysis Two reviewers extracted data, using a standard data extraction form. Data were summarised under a random effects model. Dichotomous data were expressed as relative risk. We calculated the risk difference (RD), and the Number Needed to Treat, when it was possible. We collected data of mean and standard deviation from changes to baseline. However many trials reported end point data. This limitation lead to the expression of the results as standardised mean differences (SMD) and an overall SMD was calculated. Heterogeneity was tested for using the Z score and the I-squared statistic. Subgroup, sensitivity analysis and meta-regression were used to explore heterogeneity. Main results We included for analysis 29 trials with 37 arms (5259 participants), comparing metformin (37 arms and 2007 participants) with sulphonylureas (13 and 1167), placebo (12 and 702), diet (three and 493), thiazolidinediones (three and 132), insulin (two and 439), meglitinides (two and 208), and glucosidase inhibitors (two and 111). Nine studies reported data on primary outcomes. Obese patients allocated to intensive blood glucose control with metformin showed a greater benefit than chlorpropamide, glibenclamide, or insulin for any diabetes-related outcomes (P = 0.009), and for all-cause mortality (P = 0.03). Obese participants assigned to intensive blood glucose control with metformin showed a greater benefit than overweight patients on conventional treatment for any diabetes-related outcomes (P = 0.004), diabetes-related death (P = 0.03), all-cause mortality (P = 0.01), and myocardial infarction (P = 0.02). Patients assigned to metformin monotherapy showed a significant benefit for glycaemia control, weight, dyslipidaemia, and diastolic blood pressure. Metformin presents a strong benefit for HbA1c when compared with placebo and diet; and a moderated benefit for: glycaemia control, LDL cholesterol, and BMI or weight when compared with sulphonylureas. Authors' conclusions Metformin may be the first therapeutic option in the diabetes mellitus type 2 with overweight or obesity, as it may prevent some vascular complications, and mortality. Metformin produces beneficial changes in glycaemia control, and moderated in weight, lipids, insulinaemia and diastolic blood pressure. Sulphonylureas, alpha-glucosidase inhibitors, thiazolidinediones, meglitinides, insulin, and diet fail to show more benefit for glycaemia control, body weight, or lipids, than metformin.

Authors' conclusions: Metformin may be the first therapeutic option in the diabetes mellitus type 2 with overweight or obesity, as it may prevent some vascular complications, and mortality. © 2015 The Cochrane Collaboration.

The thymus undergoes an age-dependent degenerative process which is mainly characterized by a progressive loss of lymphoid tissue. Thymic involution is particularly important in relation to immunosenescence and its various associated diseases; this fact has prompted many studies aimed at understanding the causes and mechanisms of thymic degeneration which may, ultimately, lead to the possibility of manipulating it. In this sense, one of the aspects which has deserved most attention is the thymic microenvironment, and more precisely, the many growth factors to which the cells present in the organ are exposed. Thus, the levels of several of such factors have been reported to undergo age-dependent changes in the thymus, which may point at an influence on the regression of the organ. In this article we consider which growth factors and growth factor receptors occur in the vertebrate thymus. Then, focusing on those whose influences are better documented, i.e., neurotrophins, cytokines and IGFs, we discuss their potential role in the organ and the possibility of their being involved in thymic involution.

The flows of people and goods take place according to the distribution of housing and economic activities over the territory, that is in a clearly supramunicipal logic. Therefore, planning instruments with the appropriate scale are needed, in order to influence the main causes of the mobility, and in order to orient its evolution. Besides, we are in a moment when housing and jobs are likely to increase in a way that mobility patterns may be substantially modified. The article claims the necessity of the formulation of the repeatedly proposed regional planning, as an essential instrument to reach a use of space as efficient as possible, which is the base of a rational mobility., Los movimientos de personas y mercancías se producen en función de la distribución de la vivienda i las actividades sobre el territorio que tiene una lógica claramente supramunicipal.
