In the two previous papers in this miniseries about using Lewin's (1951) unfreeze-change- refreeze model for managing change, we identified how this model is well known and liked because it is easy to understand and apply (Ellis, 2023). We have covered the unfreeze and changes aspect of the model -- the final stage of Lewin's change model in refreezing, or what Lewin called 'freezing'. Abstract

Aim: This inquiry aimed to; (1) examine the psychosocial and emotional sequelae associated with cancer patient‐hood experience in healthcare professionals (HCPs) in Uganda, (2) generate evidence to inform clinical and nursing practice about the needs of HCP patients with cancer. Design: This was a qualitative phenomenological study. Methods: The study was conducted among HCP cancer patients and survivors recruited from oncology and palliative care settings in Uganda. Data were collected via audio‐taped, face‐to‐face or telephone open‐ended interviews. Interviews were transcribed verbatim. Thematic analysis was used. Results: Eight HCP cancer patients and survivors participated in the study. Their mean age was 56 years, range 29–85 years. Abstract

Disaster victim identification (DVI) entails a protracted process of evidence collection and data matching to reconcile physical remains with victim identity. Technology is critical to DVI by enabling the linkage of physical evidence to information. However, labelling physical remains and collecting data at the scene are dominated by low-technology paper-based practices. We ask, how can technology help us tag and track the victims of disaster? Our response to this question has two parts. First, we conducted a human–computer interaction led investigation into the systematic factors impacting DVI tagging and tracking processes. Through interviews with Australian DVI practitioners, we explored how technologies to improve linkage might fit with prevailing work practices and preferences; practical and social considerations; and existing systems and processes. We focused on tagging and tracking activities throughout the DVI process. Using insights from these interviews and relevant literature, we identified four critical themes: protocols and training; stress and stressors; the plurality of information capture and management systems; and practicalities and constraints. Second, these findings were iteratively discussed by the authors, who have combined expertise across electronics, data science, cybersecurity, human–computer interaction and forensic pathology. We applied the themes identified in the first part of the investigation to critically review technologies that could support DVI practitioners by enhancing DVI processes that link physical evidence to information. This resulted in an overview of candidate technologies matched with consideration of their key attributes. Abstract

What is meant by sustainability depends on what is sustained and at what level. Sustainable forest management, for example, requires maintenance of a variety of values not the least of which is sustained timber yields (STYs). For the 1 Bha of the world's forests subjected to selective or partial logging, failure to maintain yields can be hidden by regulatory requirements and questionable auditing practices such as increasing the number of commercial species with each harvest, reducing the minimum size at which trees can be harvested and accepting logs of lower quality. For assertions of STY to be credible, clarity is needed about all these issues, as well as about the associated ecological and economic tradeoffs. Lack of clarity about sustainability heightens risks of unsubstantiated claims and unseen losses. STY is possible but often requires cutting cycles that are longer and logging intensities that are lower than prescribed by law, as well as effective use of low-impact logging practices and application of silvicultural treatments to promote timber stock recovery. These departures from business-as-usual practices will lower profit margins but generally benefit biodiversity and ecosystem services.

220. The contribution of sex chromosome conflict to disrupted spermatogenesis in hybrid house mice

Abstract

Incompatibilities on the sex chromosomes are important in the evolution of hybrid male sterility, but the evolutionary forces underlying this phenomenon are unclear. House mice (Mus musculus) lineages have provided powerful models for understanding the genetic basis of hybrid male sterility. X chromosome-autosome interactions cause strong incompatibilities in Mus musculus F1 hybrids, but variation in sterility phenotypes suggests a more complex genetic basis. Additionally, X-Y chromosome conflict has resulted in rapid expansions of ampliconic genes with dosage-dependent expression that is essential to spermatogenesis. Here we evaluated the contribution of X-Y lineage mismatch to male fertility and stage-specific gene expression in hybrid mice. We performed backcrosses between two house mouse subspecies to generate reciprocal Y-introgression strains and used these strains to test the effects of X-Y mismatch in hybrids. Our transcriptome analyses of sorted spermatid cells revealed widespread overexpression of the X chromosome in sterile F1 hybrids independent of Y chromosome subspecies origin. Thus, postmeiotic overexpression of the X chromosome in sterile F1 mouse hybrids is likely a downstream consequence of disrupted meiotic X-inactivation rather than X-Y gene copy number imbalance. Y-chromosome introgression did result in subfertility phenotypes and disrupted expression of several autosomal genes in mice with an otherwise non-hybrid genomic background, suggesting that Y-linked incompatibilities contribute to reproductive barriers, but likely not as a direct consequence of X-Y conflict. Collectively, these findings suggest that rapid sex chromosome gene family evolution driven by genomic conflict has not resulted in strong male reproductive barriers between these subspecies of house mice.

231. Foster Youth Evaluate the Performance of Group Home Services in California

Abstract

In 2003 foster youth employed by a foster youth advocacy organization suggested that an evaluation of group home services to foster youth be conducted in Alameda County, California. This report presents the development and conduct of this evaluation study; how funding was obtained; and how foster youth were hired, trained, and employed to produce a timely and informative evaluation of the performance of 32 group homes where some of the foster youth formerly resided. The results of the study are described in another paper. This report contributes to evaluation practice in the newly emerging field of youth-led evaluations. The achievements of this project in utilizing group home clients to evaluate services with which they were familiar may stimulate other evaluators to develop similar projects, thereby enriching the development of our youth and promoting more informative evaluation findings.

232. Linking Structure, Process, and Outcome to Improve Group Home Services for Foster Youth in California

Abstract

The California Youth Connection obtained funding from two foundations to evaluate the performance of group homes serving foster youth in Alameda County, California, in order to inform state policy-making. The evaluation team initially included 14 foster youth that personally experienced group home living. Three inter-related aspects of service were studied: structure, process, and client outcomes, specifically residents' increase in developmental assets leading to the ability to transition successfully to independent living by the age of 18 years. Data were collected at 32 group homes from 127 residents and 72 staff members using three questionnaires. Both structural and process aspects of services influenced residents' satisfaction with services. However, only the process of care predicted changes in residents' developmental assets. State-level regulatory agencies learned from these results that auditing only structural aspects of services was not sufficient to promote effective services. Further, one structure item and two process items were identified as less consistently occurring in the group homes: timely distribution of clothing allowances, healthy communication between staff and youth, and staff support of regular exercise for the residents. Abstract

Incompatibilities on the sex chromosomes are important in the evolution of hybrid male sterility, but the evolutionary forces underlying this phenomenon are unclear. House mice (Mus musculus) lineages have provided powerful models for understanding the genetic basis of hybrid male sterility. X chromosome-autosome interactions cause strong incompatibilities in Mus musculus F1 hybrids, but variation in sterility phenotypes suggests a more complex genetic basis. Additionally, X-Y chromosome conflict has resulted in rapid expansions of ampliconic genes with dosage-dependent expression that is essential to spermatogenesis. Here we evaluated the contribution of X-Y lineage mismatch to male fertility and stage-specific gene expression in hybrid mice. We performed backcrosses between two house mouse subspecies to generate reciprocal Y-introgression strains and used these strains to test the effects of X-Y mismatch in hybrids. Our transcriptome analyses of sorted spermatid cells revealed widespread overexpression of the X chromosome in sterile F1 hybrids independent of Y chromosome subspecies origin. Thus, postmeiotic overexpression of the X chromosome in sterile F1 mouse hybrids is likely a downstream consequence of disrupted meiotic X-inactivation rather than X-Y gene copy number imbalance. Y-chromosome introgression did result in subfertility phenotypes and disrupted expression of several autosomal genes in mice with an otherwise non-hybrid genomic background, suggesting that Y-linked incompatibilities contribute to reproductive barriers, but likely not as a direct consequence of X-Y conflict. Collectively, these findings suggest that rapid sex chromosome gene family evolution driven by genomic conflict has not resulted in strong male reproductive barriers between these subspecies of house mice., Author's Accepted Manuscript
