Abstract

El cultivo del agave azul es de importancia económica en el estado de Jalisco, genera gran cantidad de empleos y es la principal fuente económica de varios municipios como es el caso de Tonaya y Tuxcacuesco. No obstante, en la actualidad se desconoce el estado edafológico de los suelos, se exhibe un limitado conocimiento de los factores que regulan el crecimiento del cultivo, lo que propicia que los rendimientos en el cultivo no se consideren óptimos. En este sentido, el objetivo de esta investigación fue evaluar el estado de la fertilidad de los suelos cultivados con agave azul en parcelas con distintas características (vírgenes y con varios ciclos de siembra) y diagnosticar su estado, en los municipios de Tonaya y Tuxcacuesco, con el fin de proponer prácticas de manejo y nutrición eficientes. Se analizaron los suelos en laboratorio, encontrándose las siguientes características; los resultados obtenidos evidencian que en promedio los suelos presentaron valores de pH de 7.7, la concentración de materia orgánica con promedio de 2.19%, en la mayoría de los sitios se encontraron deficiencias de nitrógeno, fósforo y potasio, clasificando a los suelos en la categoría de bajos a pobres en cuanto al contenido nutricional. Con base en los análisis estadísticos se demostró que no existen diferencias significativas entre los tipos de parcelas evaluadas, su contenido de materia orgánica y nutrientes. En cuanto a las prácticas de manejo se recomienda utilizar abonos orgánicos y el sistema de policultivo frijol, maíz y agave cuando el contexto agrícola y económico lo permitan.

208. Thyroid arterial embolization in a patient with congenital heart disease and refractory amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis

Abstract

Introduction: Amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis (AIT) can sometimes lead to life-threatening complications, especially in patients with congenital heart disease (CHD). We report the case of a patient with refractory AIT that was successfully treated with thyroid arterial embolization (TAE). Case report: A 34-year-old man with complex cyanotic CHD complicated with heart failure (HF), pulmonary hypertension, and supraventricular tachyarrhythmias, was treated with amiodarone since 2013. In March 2019, he presented worsening of his cardiac condition and symptoms of thyrotoxicosis that were confirmed by laboratory assessment. Thiamazole 30 mg/day and prednisolone 40 mg/day were prescribed, but the patient experienced worsening of his cardiac condition with several hospital admissions in the next 5 months, albeit increasing dosages of thionamide and glucocorticoid and introduction of cholestyramine and lithium. Thyroidectomy was excluded due to the severity of thyrotoxicosis, and plasmapheresis was contraindicated due to the cardiac condition. TAE of the four thyroid arteries was then performed with no immediate complications. Progressive clinical and analytical improvement ensued with gradual reduction and suspension of medication with the patient returning to euthyroid state and his usual cardiac condition previous to the AIT. Conclusion: For patients with medication refractoriness and whose condition precludes thyroidectomy, embolization of thyroid arteries may be an effect ive and safe option.

Abstract

In Alzheimer’s disease (AD), the presence of brain senile plaques, neurofibrillary tangles and activated microglial cells strongly contribute to generate an inflammatory environment. The aim of the project is to investigate a possible anti-inflammatory effect of bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cell microvesicles (BM-MSC MVs) in microglia cultures exposed to human beta Amyloid peptide 1-42 (h-Aβ1-42). BM-MSCs isolated from 4-12 week old C57BL/6 mice were expanded in vitro and tested for their ability to differentiate into specific mesenchymal lineages. MVs were isolated from the culture medium of BM-MSCs by a protocol which consists of a series of centrifugation and were characterized by FACS and western blot analysis for specific surface markers. Primary culture of murine microglial cells derived from cortices of P2 mice were treated with h-Aβ1-42 peptide, in the presence of MVs or culture supernatant deprived of MVs, to evaluate by immunocytochemistry the expression of different inflammatory or anti-inflammatory markers and by ELISA cytokine production in different conditions. BM-MSC MVs down-regulate the inflammatory processes induced by exposure of microglia to h Aβ1-42 peptide in vitro. In fact, microglial cells, following MV treatment, assume an amoeboid phenotype becoming less ramified and releasing anti-inflammatory cytokines without significantly affecting the release of the pro-inflammatory ones. Moreover, MVs lead to a decreased expression of MHC II, associated with a pro-inflammatory phenotype. As in AD the chronic proinflammatory environment is postulated to contribute to the cognitive deficits and neuronal loss that characterize the disease, the immunomodulatory properties of BM-MSC MVs may represent a powerful tool to modulate this aberrant process.

213. Prediction of Flyrocks, Airblasts and Ground Vibrations Using Neural Computing and Applications at ZCDC Mine

Abstract

When an explosive detonates in a blasthole, approximately 20 to 30% of the energy is only utilized for fragmenting the rock mass whilst the bulk of the energy is lost in the form of ground vibrations, flyrocks and airblasts. Employees’ residences, mine offices, processing plants and engineering workshops built close to the mining area and are in danger of being damaged by blast induced hazards. In addition, due to flyrocks there was a high level of ore losses, ore dilution, equipment damages, mine roads and powerlines. To assess and reduce these negative impacts, monitoring of flyrocks, ground vibrations and airblast was carried out and generate a prediction model. A three-layer, feed-forward back-propagation of a 9-10-3 network architecture was trained, validated, and tested using the Bayesian regularization algorithm. A total of 100 monitored blast records obtained from the mine were used as input parameters for the ANN prediction model. Subsequently a Multivariate Regression analysis prediction model was run and used to compare with the results obtained from ANN model. Based on the study's findings, an ANN model proved to be the best for field predictions.To determine the relative impact of each input parameter on flyrocks, gound vibration, and Airblast, a sensitivity analysis was also carried out and lastly blast optimization which managed to reduce blast induced impacts by over 30%.

Therefore, it is crucial to develop innovative technology for better combustion reducing the emissions of pollutants associated with their utilization. Water in oil (w/o) emulsions contribute to greener combustion, increasing carbon efficiency and reducing emissions. Water content, emulsions stability, and droplet size distributions are key parameters in targeting the efficient use of emulsions as combustibles. In particular, for fixed water content, the finer the emulsion, the better its beneficial effect on combustion. In this work, two emulsions, mechanically and ultrasonically generated, were compared. Cryogenic scanning electron microscopy (cryo-SEM) allowed the visualization of water droplets inside the oily matrix. No surfactants were added to the oil, due to its high asphaltenic content. Asphaltene molecular aggregates, namely clusters, act as natural surfactants stabilizing the emulsions by arranging at w/o interface and forming a rigid film. The asphaltenic rigid film is clearly visualized in this work and compared for the two emulsions. The results showed finer water droplets in the ultrasonically generated emulsion, together with a reduction in the thickness of the asphaltenic film. Ultrasonically induced cavitation favored the de-clustering (breakage of intermolecular forces) of asphaltene molecules. Thus, smaller clusters allowed to stabilize smaller water droplets resulting in an ultra-fine emulsion, which improves the combustion performances of the fuel.

Abstract

Diversity reception for Synchronous CDMA (S-CDMA) is introduced and analyzed. A Gaussian co-channel synchronous and asynchronous interference approximation is derived to evaluate the effects on the system bit error rate. Numerical results are provided for a simple mobile communication system where the signals transmitted by two distinct satellites in visibility are coherently combined by a three fingers Rake receiver. A second example showing performance of an integrated ground/satellite single frequency network for digital audio broadcasting is presented. Results show the capacity advantage of utilizing S-CDMA in combination with diversity reception.

Abstract

Chronic exposure to diesel exhaust particulates (DEP) increases the risk of cardiovascular disease in urban residents, predisposing them to the development of several cardiovascular stresses, including myocardial infarctions, arrhythmias, thrombosis, and heart failure. DEP contain a high level of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which activate the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR). We hypothesize that exposure to DEP elicits ventricular remodeling through the activation of the AHR pathway, leading to ventricular dilation and dysfunction. Male Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed by nose-only nebulization to DEP (SRM 2975, 0.2 mg/ml) or vehicle for 20 min/day × 5 wk. DEP exposure resulted in eccentric left ventricular dilation (8% increased left ventricular internal diameter at diastole and 23% decreased left ventricular posterior wall thickness at diastole vs. vehicle), as shown by echocardiograph assessment. Histological analysis using Picrosirius red staining revealed that DEP reduced cardiac interstitial collagen (23% decrease vs. vehicle). Further assessment of cardiac function using a pressure-volume catheter indicated impaired diastolic function (85% increased end-diastolic pressure and 19% decreased Tau vs. vehicle) and contractility (57 and 48% decreased end-systolic pressure-volume relationship and maximum change in pressure over time vs. end-diastolic volume compared with vehicle, respectively) in the DEP-exposed animals. Exposure to DEP significantly increased cardiac expression of AHR (19% increase vs. vehicle). In addition, DEP significantly decreased the cardiac expression of hypoxia inducible factor-1α, the competitive pathway to the AHR, and vascular endothelial growth factor, a downstream mediator of hypoxia inducible factor-1α (26 and 47% decrease vs. vehicle, respectively). These findings indicate that exposure to DEP induced left ventricular dilation by loss of collagen through an AHR-dependent mechanism.

Abstract

Aim: Based on the evidence that microvesicles (MVs) shed from Bone -Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells (BMMSCs) can play an immunomodulatory role, protecting the injured tissue, we aimed at assessing the possible anti-inflammatory effects of BM-MSCs-deriving MVs in microglia cultures exposed to hAbeta 1-42. Methods: MV swere isolated by ultracentrifugation from mouse BM-MSCs and then characterized by FACS analysis. MVs were then incubated with primary microglia in the presence of human 1-42 Abeta peptide. The expression of different inflammatory or anti-inflammatory markerswas investigated by ELISA, FACS, RTPCR and immunocytochemistry. Results:Microglial cells assume an amoeboid phenotype, changing its morphology and releasing antiinflammatory cytokines, such as IL10, without significantly affecting the release of the pro-inflammatory cytokines TNFa and IL6. Also, MVs lead to the decrease in the expression ofmarkers like MHC II, which is associated with a pro-inflammatory phenotype. Conclusions: BM-MSCMVs down-regulate the inflammatory processes induced by exposureof microglia to h 1-42 Abeta peptide in vitro. The involved molecular mechanisms are under investigation.

Abstract

Background: While the contour method for residual stress assessment has developed rapidly, no published study documents its interlaboratory reproducibility. Objective: Here we report an initial reproducibility experiment focused on contour method data analysis and residual stress calculation. Methods: The experiment uses surface topography data from a physical process simulation of elastic-plastic beam bending. The simulation provides surface topography, for input to the contour method data analysis, as well as a known residual stress field with 130 MPa peak magnitude. To increase realism, noise and specific artifacts are added to the topography data. A group of participants received the topography data (without the known residual stress), independently analyzed the data, and submitted results as a two-dimensional residual stress field. Results: Analysis of submissions provides a group average residual stress field and the spatial distribution of reproducibility standard deviation. The group average residual stress agrees with the known stress in magnitude and spatial trend. The reproducibility standard deviation ranges from 2 to 54 MPa over the measurement plane, with an average of 5.4 MPa. Reproducibility standard deviation is smaller in the cross-section interior (≤ 5 MPa), modest near local extrema in the stress field (5 to 10 MPa), and larger near the cross-section boundaries (10 to 30 MPa). The largest values of reproducibility standard deviation (up to 54 MPa) occur in limited areas where artifacts had been added to the topography data; while some participants identified and removed these artifacts, some did not, leading to systematic differences that elevated the standard deviation. Abstract

Discussed here is a new approach to code division multiple access applied to a mobile system for voice (and data) services based on Band Limited Quasi Synchronous Code Division Multiple Access (BLQS-CDMA). The system requires users to be chip synchronized to reduce the contribution of self-interference and to make use of voice activation in order to increase the satellite power efficiency. In order to achieve spectral efficiency, Nyquist chip pulse shaping is used with no detection performance impairment. The synchronization problems are solved in the forward link by distributing a master code, whereas carrier forced activation and closed loop control techniques have been adopted in the return link. System performance sensitivity to nonlinear amplification and timing/frequency synchronization errors are analyzed.

Abstract

Abstract Normalizing flows are a class of deep generative models that provide a promising route to sample lattice field theories more efficiently than conventional Monte Carlo simulations. In this work we show that the theoretical framework of stochastic normalizing flows, in which neural-network layers are combined with Monte Carlo updates, is the same that underlies out-of-equilibrium simulations based on Jarzynski’s equality, which have been recently deployed to compute free-energy differences in lattice gauge theories. We lay out a strategy to optimize the efficiency of this extended class of generative models and present examples of applications.

Abstract

Reaction between Ru2Cl(mu-O2CCH3)4 and pyrrole-2-carboxylic acid, which is followed by the recrystallization of the resultant brown solid, leads to red crystals of nonpolymeric chlorotetrakis(carboxylato)-diruthenium(II, III) compound. Steric hindrance is not responsible for the nonpolymeric nature as the axial site of the Ru2 atom is not blocked. X-ray diffraction techniques assist in the structural determination of the compound.

Abstract

Background Chronic alcohol consumption has been shown in human and animal studies to result in collagen accumulation, myocardial fibrosis, and heart failure. Cardiac fibroblasts produce collagen and regulate extracellular matrix (ECM) homeostasis through the synthesis and activity of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) and tissue inhibitors of MMPs (TIMP), with the balance of MMPs/TIMPs determining the rate of collagen turnover. Dynamic changes of MMP and TIMP expression were reported in alcohol induced hepatic fibrosis; however, the effect of alcohol on MMP/TIMP balance in the heart and cardiac fibroblasts is unknown. We hypothesized that alcohol exposure alters cardiac fibroblast MMP and TIMP expression to promote collagen accumulation in the heart.

Abstract

Intracellular uptake of adenosine is essential for optimal erythroid commitment and differentiation of hematopoietic progenitor cells. The role of adenosine signaling is well documented in the regulation of blood flow, cell proliferation, apoptosis, and stem cell regeneration. However, the role of adenosine signaling in hematopoiesis remains unclear. In this study, we show that adenosine signaling inhibits the proliferation of erythroid precursors by activating the p53 pathway and hampers the terminal erythroid maturation. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the activation of specific adenosine receptors promotes myelopoiesis. Overall, our findings indicate that extracellular adenosine could be a new player in the regulation of hematopoiesis.

248. Abandoned Mines: A Feasibility Analysis for Full-Scale Resuscitation of Redwing Gold Mine Operations

Abstract

Redwing Mine, historically one of the major gold mines in Zimbabwe operated by Metalon Gold has since been on the brink of closure for over five years. Currently, the mine is merely operating at 10% capacity due to the issuing of mining tributes to small-scale and artisanal miners and poor water management. The artisanal miners are sterilizing an economically viable gold deposit by employing rudimentary mining techniques targeting high grades hence resuscitating the mine should be of national priority. To increase production, revenue, and accountability, the mine needs to be resuscitated to its full operation based on sound mining engineering and economic principles. Resuscitation of abandoned mines to full operation consist of reserve identification, dewatering, review of the ground support system and production planning. Exploration, water measurements, and geotechnical data collection surveys were done to estimate the reserve, select optimum pumps for dewatering and design a ground support system. Production Plans were developed from Redwing Mine’s plant capacity, available machinery, and historical production data. Development work and operations necessary to be completed before production can begin were derived from survey plans. The restoration program was evaluated using the Net Present Value method and Internal Rate of Return techniques. Results proved that the project is economically feasible with an internal rate of return as high as 71.91%.
