Abstract: {sup 58}Ni+{sup 58}Ni collisions at 32 MeV/nucleon have been studied with the 4{pi} multidetector INDRA. The evolution from binary (dissipative) collisions to a fusionlike process is evidenced with decreasing impact parameter throughout a set of experimental observables within a discriminant analysis. Preequilibrium effects and characteristics of a single-source emission are discussed. A coexistence (bimodality) between two decay mechanisms is pointed out and examined in the context of a multiple-fragment (particle) emission.

Abstract: We use the HIPSE (Heavy-Ion Phase-Space Exploration) Model to discuss the origin of the bimodality in charge asymmetry observed in nuclear reactions around the Fermi energy. We show that it may be related to the important angular momentum (spin) transferred into the quasi-projectile before secondary decay. As the spin overcomes the critical value, a sudden opening of decay channels is induced and leads to a bimodal distribution for the charge asymmetry. In the model, it is not assigned to a liquid-gas phase transition but to specific instabilities in nuclei with high spin. Abstract: Low-energy pi+ (E < 35 MeV) from 12C+197Au collisions at incident energies from 300 to 1800 MeV per nucleon were detected with the Si-Si(Li)-CsI(Tl) calibration telescopes of the INDRA multidetector. The inclusive angular distributions are approximately isotropic, consistent with multiple rescattering in the target spectator. The multiplicity correlations of the low-energy pions and of energetic protons (E > 150 MeV) with intermediate-mass fragments were determined from the measured coincidence data. The deduced correlation functions 1 + R \approx 1.3 for inclusive event samples reflect the strong correlations evident from the common impact-parameter dependence of the considered multiplicities. For narrow impact-parameter bins (based on charged-particle multiplicity), the correlation functions are close to unity and do not indicate strong additional correlations. Only for pions at high particle multiplicities (central collisions) a weak anticorrelation is observed, probably due to a limited competition between these emissions. Overall, the results are consistent with the equilibrium assumption made in statistical multifragmentation scenarios. Abstract: Directed flow in symmetric heavy ion collisions has been studied using the 197Au+ 197Au reactions at incident energies between 40 and 150 A MeV. The reactions have been measured with the 4π multi-detector INDRA at the GSI facility. In particular, the bombarding energy at which the elliptic flow switches from in-plane to out-of-plane enhancement has been determined to be clearly above 100 A MeV in good agreement with the result obtained by the FOPI Collaboration. The new data also allows to extend the experimental excitation function of v2 to lower energies.

Abstract: Characteristics of the primary fragments produced in central collisions of ${}^{129}\mathrm{Xe}{+}^{\mathrm{nat}}\mathrm{Sn}$ from 32 to 50 A MeV have been obtained. By using the correlation technique for the relative velocity between light charged particles (LCP) and fragments, we were able to extract the multiplicities and average kinetic energy of secondary evaporated LCP. We then reconstructed the size and excitation energy of the primary fragments. For each bombarding energy a constant value of the excitation energy per nucleon over the whole range of fragment charge has been found. This value saturates at 3A MeV for beam energies 39A MeV and above. The corresponding secondary evaporated LCP represent less than 40% of all produced particles and decreases down to 23% for 50A MeV. The experimental characteristics of the primary fragments are compared to the predictions of statistical multifragmentation model (SMM) calculations. Reasonable agreement between the data and the calculation has been found for any given incident energy. However SMM fails to reproduce the trend of the excitation function of the primary fragment excitation energy and the amount of secondary evaporated LCP's.

Abstract: The fragmentation of the quasi-projectile is studied with the INDRA multidetector for different colliding systems and incident energies in the Fermi energy range. Different experimental observations show that a large part of the fragmentation is not compatible with the statistical fragmentation of a fully equilibrated nucleus. The study of internal correlations is a powerful tool, especially to evidence entrance channel effects. Abstract: Invariant transverse-velocity spectra of intermediate-mass fragments were measured with the 4-pi multi-detector system INDRA for collisions of Au on Au at incident energies between 40 and 150 MeV per nucleon. Their scaling properties as a function of incident energy and atomic number Z are used to distinguish and characterize the emissions in (i) peripheral collisions at the projectile and target rapidities, and in (ii) central and (iii) peripheral collisions near mid-rapidity. The importance of dynamical effects is evident in all three cases and their origin is discussed.

Abstract: The emission of intermediate-mass fragments in collisions of 197Au on 197Au was systematically studied over the range of incident energies from 40 to 150 A MeV using the 4π-multidetector INDRA and beams from the heavy-ion synchrotron SIS at GSI Darmstadt. The analysis was performed as a function of incident energy and of impact parameter, defined through the total transverse energy of light charged particles (Etrans 12, Z⩽2). This observable was found to scale linearly with the collision energy up to a certain limit above which it saturates. Strong forward-backward asymmetries in the emission pattern with respect to the rapidities of the projectile and target residua were observed. Their possible relation to equilibration is discussed and interpreted in the framework of molecular dynamics and statistical multifragmentation models. Abstract: Matière Nucléaire; International audience; The second generation of high-quality detection arrays gave hope to nuclear physicists to finally obtain an experimental equation of state of nuclear matter. In spite of this progress, the measurement of the internal energy of a hot nucleus remains a very difficult task. This paper illustrates this difficulty by a methodological study of a classical technique of excitation energy measurement used in the Fermi energy range. The aim of this study is to verify the validity, the accuracy and the experimental limits of these measurements. It is shown that it is difficult to have a real experimental mastery of the source reconstruction and calorimetry at least for limited bombarding energies and violent collisions.

Abstract: A simple formalism describing the light response of CsI(Tl) to heavy ions, which quantifies the luminescence and the quenching in terms of the competition between radiative transitions following the carrier trapping at the Tl activator sites and the electron-hole recombination, is proposed. Abstract: Intermediate velocity emissions of light charged particles are studied for the Ar+Ni system at $95A \mathrm{MeV}.$ Experimental parallel velocity and transverse energy distributions are compared to those of a calculation based on intranuclear cascades followed by percolation and evaporation steps. The trends of the distributions are very similar, confirming the importance of prompt emissions in the experimental data.

Abstract: Matière Nucléaire; International audience; The influence of radial flow on nuclear multifragmentation is studied using Au+Au central collisions for incident energies between 40 and 100 MeV/A. Central collisions are selected via an impact parameter estimator defined by the transverse energy of light charged particles. At all energies, the fragment size distributions are studied using the Statistical Multifragmentation Model (SMM) in order to extract thermal excitation energies. The excess kinetic energies are analyzed via the hypothesis of a radial, self-similar, but non-isotropic flow. At the lowest energy, this flow is small with respect to the thermal energy whereas, at 100 MeV/A thermal and radial energies are of the same order. The nature and origin of the radial flow is discussed. A comparison with the predictions of the Quantum Molecular Dynamics code is presented.

Abstract: The properties of fragments and light charged particles emitted in multifragmentation of single sources formed in central 36AMeV Gd+U collisions are reviewed. Most of the products are isotropically distributed in the reaction c.m. Fragment kinetic energies reveal the onset of radial collective energy. A bulk effect is experimentally evidenced from the similarity of the charge distribution with that from the lighter 32AMeV Xe+Sn system. Spinodal decomposition of finite nuclear matter exhibits the same property in simulated central collisions for the two systems, and appears therefore as a possible mechanism at the origin of multifragmentation in this incident energy domain., Comment: 28 pages including 14 figures; submitted to Nucl. Abstract: Matière Nucléaire; International audience; The excitation energy and angular momentum transferred to quasiprojectiles have been measured in the 129Xe+natSn collisions at bombarding energies between 25 and 50 MeV/nucleon. The excitation energy of quasiprojectiles has been determined from the kinetic energy of all decay products (calorimetry). It increases with the violence of the collision, approaching 10 MeV/nucleon in the most dissipative ones. The angular momentum has been deduced from the kinetic energies and angular distributions of the emitted light charged particles (p, d, t, 3He and α). The (apparent) spin value decreases with the violence of the collision. Larger spin values are observed at the lowest bombarding energy. Data are compared with the predictions of dynamical and statistical models. They reproduce the data in a quantitative way indicating that large spin values are transferred to quasiprojectiles during the interaction. The results show that the one-body dissipation formalism still applies at intermediate bombarding energies and low-energy dissipations. With the increase of the energy, the data seem to be better described when the two-body interaction is accounted for.

Abstract: Reaction mechanisms and multifragmentation processes have been studied for Zn-64 + Ni-58 collisions at intermediate energies with the help of antisymmetrized molecular dynamics (AMD-V) model calculations. Experimental energy spectra, angular distributions, charge distributions, and isotope distributions, classified by their associated charged particle multiplicities, are compared with the results of the AMD-V calculations. In general the experimental results are reasonably well reproduced by the calculations. The multifragmentation observed experimentally at all incident energies is also reproduced by the AMD-V calculations. A detailed study of AMD-V events reveals that, in nucleon transport, the reaction shows some transparency, whereas in energy transport the reaction is much less transparent at all incident energies studied here. The transparency in the nucleon transport indicates that. even for central collisions, about 75% of the projectile nucleons appear in the forward direction. In energy transport about 80% of the initial kinetic energy of the projectile in the center-of-mass frame is dissipated. The detailed study of AMD-V events also elucidates the: dynamics of the multifragmentation process. The study suggests that, at 35A MeV, the semitransparency and thermal expansion are the dominant mechanisms for the multifragmentation process, whereas at 49A MeV and higher incident energies a nuclear compression occurs at an early stage of the reaction and plays an important role in the multifragmentation process in addition to that of the thermal expansion and the semitransparency.

Abstract: Matière Nucléaire; International audience; The quasi-projectile (QP) properties are investigated in the Ar+Ni collisions at 95 A.MeV taking into account the intermediate velocity emission. Indeed, in this reaction, between 52 and 95 A.MeV bombarding energies, the number of particles emitted in the intermediate velocity region is related to the overlap volume between projectile and target. Mean transverse energies of these particles are found particularly high. In this context, the mass of the QP decreases linearly with the impact parameter from peripheral to central collisions whereas its excitation energy increases up to 8 A.MeV. These results are compared to previous analyses assuming a pure binary scenario.

The correlations of the system (129Xe + natSn) at 50 AMeV have been measured with the 4 pi INDRA which provides a complete kinematical description of each event. The emission time scale analyzed with a quantum model reveals the time sequence of the light particles emitted by the projectile-like fragment. Abstract: Matière Nucléaire, GANIL E209, GANIL E210; International audience; Recent experimental results concerning heavy systems (Pb + Au, Pb + Ag, Pb + Al, Gd + C, Gd + U, Xe + Sn, ...) obtained at GANIL with the INDRA and NAUTILUS 4$\pi arrays will be presented. The study of reaction mechanisms has shown the dominant binary and highly dissipative character of the process. The two heavy and excited fragments produced after the first stage of the interaction can decay into various decay modes from evaporation to multifragmentation including fission. However, deviations from this simple picture have been found by analyzing angular and velocity distributions of light charged particles, and fragments. Indeed, there is a certain amount of matter in excess emitted between the two primary sources suggesting either the existence of a mid-rapidity source similar to the one observed in the relativistic regime (participants) or a strong deformation induced by the dynamics of the collision (neck instability). This last possibility has been suggested by analyzing in detail the angular distributions of the fragments. More precisely, we observe an isotropic component which is compatible with the prediction of statistical models and a second one corresponding to breakup aligned with the recoil direction of the projectile like source which should be compared with the predictions of dynamical calculations based on microscopic transport models.

Abstract: The pulse-height defect (PHD) of 36Ar, 58Ni, 129Xe, 181Ta and 197Au ions in the 180 passivated ion-implanted silicon detectors of the INDRA array has been measured. The detectors faced the target with the low electric field side. The charge encoding ensured a low ballistic deficit. Detectors with the same nominal characteristics and electric field strength show a PHD dependence on the individual silicon wafer. They are classified and calibrated by using an empirical parametrization which relates the PHD to the total energy through a Z-depending power law. A PHD analytical formula, based on a simple recombination model, is also proposed. It considers a realistic charge density variation with the position coordinate on the ion path. This new formula is successfully confronted to some experimental data.

Abstract: For 50 MeV/nucleon {sup 129}Xe+{sup nat}Sn multifragmentation events, we deduced, by means of correlation techniques, the multiplicities of the hydrogen and helium isotopes which were emitted by the hot primary excited fragments produced at the stage of the disassembly of an equilibrated hot source. We also derived the relative kinetic energy distributions between the primary clusters and the light charged particles that they evaporate. From the comparison between the secondary multiplicities observed experimentally and the multiplicities predicted by the GEMINI model, we concluded that the source breaks into primary fragments which are characterized by the same N/Z ratio as the combined system. Knowing the secondary light charged particle multiplicities and kinetic energies, we reconstructed the average charges of the hot fragments and we estimated their mean excitation energies. The fragment excitation energies are equal to 3.0 MeV/nucleon for the full range of intermediate mass fragment atomic number. This global constancy indicates that, on the average, thermodynamical equilibrium was achieved at the disassembly stage of the source. {copyright} {ital 1998} {ital The American Physical Society}

Abstract: Thermal scaling (Arrhenius law for an “elementary” probability p of binomial function) and reducibility in intermediate mass fragments (IMF's) production are examined for data of the reaction 129Xe+ natSn at 50 MeV/u. The study of the longitudinal velocities and of the average transverse energies of the IMF's contradicts the assumption that the total transverse energy of all detected particles Et is related to a well defined temperature. The separation of Et into the total transverse energy of light charged particles (Z=1,2) and that of IMF's elucidates the algorithm which induces a linear behavior of log(1/p) versus 1/ E t . Even in the case of a single thermalized source, calculations based on a sequential statistical model show that the Arrhenius law cannot be observed if Et is taken as an estimation of the thermal energy.

Abstract: Experimental data obtained with the 4{pi} multidetector system INDRA are used to study the light charged particle (LCP, Z{le}2) and intermediate mass fragment (IMF, Z{ge}3) production in peripheral and semicentral collisions of Xe and Sn at 50 MeV/nucleon. It is found that a sizable fraction of the detected LCP`s and IMF`s originates from the midvelocity region. These fragments can be seen to come either from a prompt (preequilibrium) mechanism or from a slower but dynamically influenced emission process. The relative magnitude of the dynamically influenced emission relative to the isotropic statistical evaporation is presented as a function of the transverse energy of light particles, used as an impact parameter selector. Abstract: The dependence of nuclear temperature upon excitation energy has been experimentally studied with increasing values of excitation energy over the years. At excitation energies per nucleon, E*/A, lower than 6 MeV the temperatures deduced from the kinetic properties of the emitted particles and clusters follow the Fermi gas law : E* = (A/k).T 2. The value of the inverse level density parameter k was found to be in the range 8 to 13[1]. When excitation energies up to 10 MeV per nucleon were reached, temperatures obtained from the relative populations of excited levels in the emitted light nuclei did not overcome 5–6 MeV[2], but this limitation could be explained by side-feeding effects. Such hot nuclei were formed in fusion or deep inelastic reactions. At incident energies above 40–50 MeV/u, binary dissipative collisions dominate and the quasi-projectiles reach excitation energies per nuclEon and kinetic temperatures above 10 MeV[4, 5]. The study of projectile “spectators” in reactions at several hundreds of MeV/u made it possible to reach similar excitation energies[3]. In this Aladin experiment at GSI, the temperature was obtained via the relative abundances of two isotope pairs[6]. The relation between this temperature Tr 0 and E*/A was interpreted as indicating a phase transition, with the nuclear gas regime dominating above E*/A = 10 MeV, as predicted[7]. However, a monotonic increase of the temperature with excitation energy was observed in similar conditions[8] and questions were raised about the significance of these caloric curves[9, 10, 11, 12], about the role played by the mass dependence of the decaying nucleus upon E*/A [13], as well as the strong effects of side-feeding, especially at high temperatures [14]. Abstract: The 4π array INDRA was used to detect nearly all charged products emitted in Ar + Ni collisions between 52 and 95 MeV/u. The charge, mass and excitation energy E ∗ of the quasi-projectiles have been reconstructed event by event. Excitation energies up to 25 MeV per nucleon are reached. Apparent temperatures obtained from several double isotopic yield ratios Tr0 show different dependences upon E ∗ . T6Li7Li3Heα0 yields the highest values, as well as the high energy slopes Ts of the kinetic energy spectra. Two statistical models, sequential evaporation and gas in complete equilibrium, taking into account side feeding and discrete excited states population, show that the data can be explained by a steady increase of the initial temperature with excitation energy without evidence for a liquid-gas phase transition.

Abstract: Light charged particles emitted from the reactions Zn-64+Al-27 at beam energies 49, 57, 69 and 79 MeV/u have been measured with a 4 pi multidetector array. The collective transverse momentum in the reaction plane (in-plane flow) is observed to vary strongly with the impact parameter and the emitted fragments. The flow parameter decreases monotonically from 49 to 79 MeV/u and falls to zero at a beam energy about 79 MeV/u in central collisions. This energy of vanishing flow increases with impact parameter and may be the same for different fragments. The disappearance of flow is also studied with the Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck equation and it is demonstrated that the flow parameter and E(VF) are very sensitive to the in-medium cross section sigma(NN) and weakly sensitive to the nuclear compressibility in central collisions. Comparisons with experimental data indicate that sigma(NN) is around 35 to 45 mb in central collisions.

Abstract: Vaporization events detected with the 4π array INDRA, where all species have atomic numbers lower than 3 are studied. Binary dissipative collisions are found to be the dominant mechanism responsible for the production of such events. Due to large fluctuations (energy damping and mass of partners), the excitation energy of the vaporizing partners covers a very broad range from 6 to 28 A MeV.

Abstract: Within the framework of flow and multifragmentation study, the 36Ar + 58Ni experiment has been performed at seven incident energies from 32 to 95 A.MeV with the INDRA detector at GANIL. After a brief description of the experimental set-up, the main trends as well as the evolution of fragment distributions will be presented. Some results about reaction mechanisms for particular classes of events will conclude this report.

Abstract: A method is proposed for estimating the energy of vanishing flow (also called balance energy, E(bal)) without reconstructing the reaction plane. This method is based on the shapes of experimental particle-particle azimuthal correlation functions. It is used for determining E(bal) for three systems: Ar + Al, Zn + Ti, Zn + Ni. The results are compared with estimations using flow-parameter analysis and with theoretical expectations.

Abstract: Using the 4π multidetector INDRA, collisions between 36Ar and 58Ni have been investigated over a broad bombarding energy range, from 32 to 95 AMeV. The onset for complete vaporization of the system into neutrons, H and He isotopes as well as the evolution with energy of the isotopic composition of the vaporization events were determined. Initial excitation energy needed for vaporization is discussed.

Abstract: Cultural omnivorousness – or éclectisme culturel – refers to the tendency to mix, in one's cultural space, elements belonging to highbrow cultural forms with others considered as popular or less legitimate. This article explores different patterns of cultural activities that mix differently ranked cultural elements, focusing on their relations to sociability. Drawing on examples from qualitative research, we show how cultural legitimacies can be produced by and worked out through the activities of groups and the ways in which cultural activities are combined and distributed, either in conversations – in talking – or in shared practices – in doing – according to the various groups that compose one's relational network. Our hypothesis is that sociability and its different forms play an active role in the formation of omnivorous cultural tendencies and that the latter in return influence the differentiation of social frequentations. Our interest in this article is then on the architecture of relational practices and their peculiar forms when mobilising cultural contents that are heterogeneous in terms of their degree of legitimacy.

Abstract: International audience; The averaged projected momentum per nucleon and the velocity distribution of light particles are examined in coincidence with projectile‐like fragments. A dependence of the left‐right asymmetry on the incident energy is observed for the intermediate velocity proton emission. On the contrary the asymmetry of the emission of intermediate velocity α particles shows a similar trend for all incident energies. Possible dynamical models are discussed for the emission of intermediate velocity light particles.

Abstract: Invariant cross sections of intermediate mass fragments in peripheral collisions of Au on Au at incident energies between 40 and 150 AMeV have been measured with the 4-pi multi-detector INDRA. The maximum of the fragment production is located near mid-rapidity at the lower energies and moves gradually towards the projectile and target rapidities as the energy is increased. Schematic calculations within an extended Goldhaber model suggest that the observed cross-section distributions and their evolution with energy are predominantly the result of the clustering requirement for the emerging fragments and of their Coulomb repulsion from the projectile and target residues. Abstract: Kinematical properties and chemical composition of vaporizing sources observed in heavy-ion collisions are presented. Vaporizing sources detected with the 4π array INDRA, are defined as sources for which all detected species have atomic numbers lower than 3. The excitation energy of the sources covers a very broad range (6–28 A MeV). The occurrence of thermodynamical equilibrium is discussed by comparing the data with the results of two statistical models. The model describing a gas in thermal and chemical equilibrium reproduces rather well the data suggesting that thermodynamical equilibrium may have been reached for such sources.

Abstract: International audience; Reactions between heavy-ions at various energy regimes produce many nuclear fragments which can be populatedin highly excited states. The study of these fragments, detected at the end of their particle decay, is importantto investigate nuclear forces and structure effects. In recent years there have been many efforts to extend thesestudies towards the drip-lines, i.e. to systems far from the $\beta$-stability valley, by using accelerated radioactivebeams. The development of such infrastructures is accompanied by the development of more powerful detectorsand associated electronics, capable to identify ions with very different sizes and kinetic energies. Here we give twoexamples which show how advanced arrays can contribute to the studies on nuclear phenomena. The examplescome from the European FAZIA collaboration and from recent campaigns with the GARFIELD apparatus, thelatter in operation at the INFN Legnaro Laboratory (Italy) where the SPES RIB facility is under construction

Abstract: Matière Nucléaire; This paper introduces a new method for the selection of central single-source events, based on classical multivariate techniques. The resulting discriminating variable is shown to be valid for different hypotheses on the nuclear source deexcitation mechanism. It enables the selection of events which are representative of the whole set of single-source events. Application to the Ni+Ni at 32A MeV system measured with the INDRA multidetector has allowed the determination of the fusion probability as a function of the impact parameter and the evaluation of the corresponding cross section.

Abstract: Multifragmentation of fused systems was observed for central collisions between 32 AMeV 129Xe and Sn, and 36 AMeV 155Gd and U. Previous extensive comparisons between the two systems led to the hypothesis of spinodal decomposition of finite systems as the origin of multifragmentation for incident energies around 30 AMeV. Abstract: Experimental data obtained with the $4\ensuremath{\pi}$ multidetector system INDRA are used to study midvelocity emissions of light charged particles (LCP) and intermediate mass fragments for peripheral and semicentral collisions of Xe and Sn at energies between 25 and 50 MeV/nucleon. The analysis is performed as a function of incident energy and of impact parameter, defined through the total transverse energy of LCP. The onset of midvelocity emissions is found to be close to 25 MeV/nucleon. Evaporative processes are also identified and are found to be sensitive to the impact parameter but show, for a given impact parameter, little dependence on the incident energy. A chemical analysis of the midvelocity component is performed. Compared to the evaporative process, midvelocity matter is found to be more neutron rich. Results are compared with the predictions of a dynamical model (CHIMERA). The general trends are well reproduced but some interesting differences are observed, notably in the amount of relative energy dissipation, showing that midvelocity emissions could be sensitive to the finer details of the interaction.
