Abstract

(110) europium films exhibit an atypical magnetic arrangement at low temperature, characterized by a low magnetization value from macroscopic magnetization measurements. An accurate analysis of the temperature and magnetic field range, where this specific configuration is stabilized, has shown that it is favored by a small Eu thickness. A two-helices configuration with propagation vectors along [100] and [010] may explain this low magnetization state. Index Terms--Epitaxial layers, magnetic films, magnetoelasticity, thin films.

Abstract

Shwachman-Diamond syndrome (SDS) is a rare multi-organ recessive disease mainly characterised by pancreatic insufficiency, skeletal defects, short stature and bone marrow failure (BMF). As in many other BMF syndromes, SDS patients are predisposed to develop a number of haematopoietic malignancies, particularly myelodysplastic syndrome and acute myeloid leukaemia. However, the mechanism of cancer predisposition in SDS patients is only partially understood. In light of the emerging role of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) in the regulation of bone marrow homeostasis, we assessed the ability of MSCs derived from SDS patients (SDS-MSCs) to recreate a functional bone marrow niche, taking advantage of a murine heterotopic MSC transplant model. We show that the ability of semi-cartilaginous pellets (SCPs) derived from SDS-MSCs to generate complete heterotopic ossicles in vivo is severely impaired in comparison with HD-MSC-derived SCPs. Specifically, after in vitro angiogenic stimuli, SDS-MSCs showed a defective ability to form correct networks, capillary tubes and vessels and displayed a marked decrease in VEGFA expression. Altogether, these findings unveil a novel mechanism of SDS-mediated haematopoietic dysfunction based on hampered ability of SDS-MSCs to support angiogenesis. Overall, MSCs could represent a new appealing therapeutic target to treat dysfunctional haematopoiesis in paediatric SDS patients

Abstract

The aim of this study was to assess the outcome of patients with aplastic anemia (AA), receiving rabbit anti-thymocyte globulin (Thymoglobulin, SANOFI) and cyclosporin, as first line treatment. Eligible were 955 patients with AA, treated first line with Thymoglobulin, between 2001 and 2008 (n = 492), or between 2009 and 2012 (n = 463). The median age of the patients was 21 years (range 1-84). Mortality within 90 days was 5.7% and 2.4%, respectively in the two time periods (P = .007).The actuarial 10-year survival for the entire population was 70%; transplant free survival was 64%. Predictors of survival in multivariate analysis, were severity of the disease, patients age and the interval between diagnosis and treatment. Survival was 87% vs 61% for responders at 6 months versus nonresponders (P < .0001). The 10-year survival of nonresponders at 6 months, undergoing a subsequent transplant (n = 110), was 64%, vs 60% for patient not transplantated (n = 266) (P = .1). The cumulative incidence of response was 37%, 52%, 65% respectively, at 90, 180, and 365 days. In multivariate analysis, negative predictors of response at 6 months, were older age, longer interval diagnosis treatment, and greater severity of the disease. In conclusion, early mortality is low after first line treatment of AA with Thymoglobulin, and has been further reduced after year 2008. Patients age, together with interval diagnosis-treament and severity of the disease, remain strong predictors of response and survival

Abstract

Si-rich-SiO2(SRSO)/SiO2 multilayers (MLs) have been grown by reactive magnetron sputtering. The presence of silicon nanoclusters (Si-ncls) within the SRSO sublayer and annealing temperature influence optical absorption as well as photoluminescence. The optimized annealing temperature has been found to be 1100 °C, which allows the recovery of defects and thus enhances photoluminescence. Four MLs with Si-ncl size ranging from 1.5 to 8 nm have been annealed using the optimized conditions and then studied by transmission measurements. Optical absorption has been modeled so that a size effect in the linear absorption coefficient α (in cm-1) has been evidenced and correlated with TEM observations. It is demonstrated that amorphous Si-ncl absorption is fourfold higher than that of crystalline Si-ncls. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The present article deals with the optimized processing conditions leading to the highest density of Si nanoclusters which play the role of sensitizing centers for the nearby Er ions within a silica matrix. The layers were obtained by reactive magnetron sputtering under a plasma of Ar mixed to different rates of hydrogen, and were subsequently annealed at various temperatures. The increase of the dilution degree of the Ar plasma with hydrogen was found to multiply the nucleation sites whose density foreshadows that of the Si nanoclusters formed upon annealing. Both hydrogen content and annealing temperature govern the growth of the clusters. The maximum density of efficient sensitizing centers was obtained for hydrogen rate in the plasma of 50% and annealing at 900 °C. This has directly led to the enhancement of the coupling rate between the Si nanoclusters and the Er ions, as reflected by the ten times increase of the proportion of optically active ions, compared to that for standard conditions. In parallel, the lifetime emission of the active Er ions was found to continuously improve with the annealing temperature and has reached values exceeding 7 ms. © 2004 American Institute of Physics. The long-range magnetic order is found in superlattices of two dissimilar magnetic rare earth metals, Er and Dy. The Dy spin coupling is capable of being propagated through Er when Er is subjected to paramagnetic conditions. Distinct ordering temperatures similar to bulk counterpart elements are exhibited by the Er and Dy layers. Both rare earth elements exhibit identical magnetic periodicity.

Astrocytic tumors account for 42% of childhood brain tumors, arising in all anatomical regions and associated with neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) in 15%. Anatomical site determines the degree and risk of resectability; the more complete resection, the better the survival rates. New biological markers and modern radiotherapy techniques are altering the risk assessments of clinical decisions for tumor resection and biopsy. The increasingly distinct pediatric neuro-oncology multidisciplinary team (PNMDT) is developing a distinct evidence base. Item does not contain fulltext, Background.: Pineoblastoma is a rare pineal region brain tumor. Treatment strategies have reflected those for other malignant embryonal brain tumors. Patients and Methods.: Original prospective treatment and outcome data from international trial groups were pooled. Cox regression models were developed considering treatment elements as time-dependent covariates. Results.: Data on 135 patients with pineoblastoma aged 0.01-20.7 (median 4.9) years were analyzed. Median observation time was 7.3 years. Favorable prognostic factors were age >/=4 years (hazard ratio [HR] for progression-free survival [PFS] 0.270, P < .001) and administration of radiotherapy (HR for PFS 0.282, P < .001). Metastatic disease (HR for PFS 2.015, P = .006), but not postoperative residual tumor, was associated with unfavorable prognosis. In 57 patients <4 years old, 5-year PFS/overall survival (OS) were 11 +/- 4%/12 +/- 4%. Two patients survived after chemotherapy only, while 3 of 16 treated with craniospinal irradiation (CSI) with boost, and 3 of 5 treated with high-dose chemotherapy (HDCT) and local radiotherapy survived. In 78 patients aged >/=4 years, PFS/OS were 72 +/- 7%/73 +/- 7% for patients without metastases, and 50 +/- 10%/55 +/- 10% with metastases. Seventy-three patients received radiotherapy (48 conventionally fractionated CSI, median dose 35.0 [18.0-45.0] Gy, 19 hyperfractionated CSI, 6 local radiotherapy), with (n = 68) or without (n = 6) chemotherapy. The treatment sequence had no impact; application of HDCT had weak impact on survival in older patients. Conclusion.: Survival is poor in young children treated without radiotherapy. In these patients, combination of HDCT and local radiotherapy may warrant further evaluation in the absence of more specific or targeted treatments. CSI combined with chemotherapy is effective for older non-metastatic patients.
