A comparison has been made between (1) the computed angular scattering coefficient for a polydisperse cloud of small, spherical (Mie) particles and (2) the measured angular scattering coefficient for a polydisperse cloud of irregular, randomly oriented (Mie) particles fitting the same distribution function and having the same material properties. The comparison has been made for eight wavelengths covering the visible range.

Abstract

The article focuses on Italian sculptor Francesco Bertos, who became an active artist from 1683 to 1738, and his sculpture "Vessel With Three Putti." Based on historical records, Bertos worked in marble and bronze in northern Italy, was in Rome in 1683 and in Venice in 1710 as shown by his work on two bronze candelabra for the Santo in Padua. The bronze "Vessel With Three Putti" was speculated to have been made in Venice circa 1720-1740, and used allegorical putti stand as a replacement for the satyrs and grotesque ornament used by earlier art schools.

The article focuses on draughtsman Jean-Robert Ango. Ango revived 18th-century sculpture of Michelangelo Buonarroti through his drawing. The drawing of the Marble boy, attributed to Michelangelo, provides positive evidence on several fronts. It reveals the figure's limbs intact and a slight confusion caused by the parallel diagonals of the baldric and the imprecise proper right arm. Another factor the drawing proves is that the marble youth's pose was originally even more similar to that of Bertoldo di Giovanni's bronze statuette of Apollo.

Abstract

This report shows the feasibility of using artificial neural systems (ANS) for making predictions of cloud to ground lightning strikes. ANS designs offer some potentially useful features. ANS predictors can be incrementally trained for new levels of performance without starting programming from 'scratch' each time the predictor is upgraded. Incremental training could proceed in the field reducing costs and delays of modifications while improving predictor accuracy by tailoring it to site conditions (i.e. topography, etc). Trained ANs provides a ready-made formula for constructing fast parallel, distributed processors. The features built up within the ANS might be analyzed for clues to the physical processes underlying the partially understood phenomenon of lightning. Comparisons are made of the performance of an ANS predictor with the state-of-the-art lightning prediction using a wind convergence based criterion described by Watson et al, 1987. (jes)

Abstract

A review of several simple, inviscid, high-altitude rocket plume models indicated the most accurate representation. Wind-tunnel plume measurements have been used to verify the Jarvinen-Hill model and to study the plume viscous mixing layers which simulated flight conditions by matching wind tunnel and flight plume Knudsen numbers. The HAPRAP data simulate typical ICBM sustainer flight in the 120 to 320 km altitude range.

The comparison has been made for eight separate wavelengths covering the photopic range. Four particle materials were studied: aluminum oxide, carbon black, silicon dioxide and talc. These materials had median volume diameters in the range of 0.1 to 1.0 microns according to the manufacturers specifications. (Author)

Abstract

Utilizing the pointing capability inherent in the MITHRAS developed RFD, a discrimination system was installed in a MITHRAS-built, four-inch tracker. Tracking tests on point sources, in the presence of simulated near and far field backgrounds, were conducted. General consideration is paid to the specific problem of near-field background noise and far-field background noise. Methods of predicting and describing these backgrounds are considered and reference is made to several interim reports by MITHRAS which are concerned with the detailed determination of the background characteristics, simulation of same, and experimental verification of the derived relations, as well as on the methods of background noise alleviation which have been investigated by MITHRAS under the present contract. Abstract

An investigation is reported of the fluctuating IR emission from hot air in a turbulent shear layer. A wind-tunnel experiment was conducted in which the free shear layer at the exit of a Mach 7 nozzle was observed with an AC radiometer. The radiating species was CO2 and the spectral response of the radiometer limited the observations to ists 2.7 micron band. The data were reduced both to broadband (25-25,000 cps) radiant emittance and to spectral density curves. Results obtained were compared with an analytical prediction of radiant emittance and good agreement has been obtained for one of the proposed models of turbulence intensity. The spectral density curves are peaked and the characteristic frequencies are partly consistent with those measured with hot wires in subsonic jets. (Author)
