- Abstract
Adaptive optics is a relatively new field, yet it is spreading rapidly and allows new questions to be asked about how the visual system is organized. The editors of this feature issue have posed a series of question to scientists involved in using adaptive optics in vision science. The questions are focused on three main areas. In the first we investigate the use of adaptive optics for psychophysical measurements of visual system function and for improving the optics of the eye. In the second, we look at the applications and impact of adaptive optics on retinal imaging and its promise for basic and applied research. NA62 is a fixed target experiment located at the CERN SPS which aims to perform flavour physics studies in the charged kaon sector with an unprecedented precision. Due to the abundance of kaon decays with a po in the final state, NA62 is also a perfect environment to measure the neutral pion characteristics. NA62 collected a large sample of charged kaon decays with a highly efficient trigger for decays into electrons in 2007. We report about the measurement of the po electromagnetic transition form factor slope parameter in the time-like region. Between 2008 and 2014 the NA62 apparatus underwent an intense upgrade phase to improve the physics sensitivity of the experiment to precisely measure the Br (K+ !p+n ¯ n). NA62 took data in pilot runs in 2014 and 2015 reaching the final designed beam intensity. The quality of data acquired in view of the final measurement is presented.

- Abstract
Using data taken during the year 2000 with the NA48 detector at the CERN SPS, a search for the CP violating decay KS→3π0 has been performed. From a fit to the lifetime distribution of about 4.9 million reconstructed K0/K̄0→3π0 decays, the CP violating amplitude η000=A(KS→3π0)/ A(KL→3π0) has been found to be Re(η000)=-0.002±0.011±0.015 and Im(η000)=-0.003±0. 013±0.017. This corresponds to an upper limit on the branching fraction of Br(KS→3π0)

Several 14 Ω-e+ pairs of which 11.4±3.8 are consistent with the decay Ωc0→ Ω-e+ve were reconstructed. The probability that a background fluctuation was observed is 7.6×10-5. The measured Β·σ is (42.2±14.1±5.7) fb.

A study of the polarization of \(\Lambda\) hyperons produced in inelastic pN reactions induced by the 450 GeV proton beam from the CERN SPS has been performed with the NA48 detector. The \(\Lambda\) hyperons were detected at a fixed angle of 4.2 mrad in the momentum range from 50 GeV/c to 200 GeV/c. The polarization changes from \(-0.053 \pm 0.034\) to \(-0.298 \pm 0.074\) for a transverse momentum range of the \(\Lambda\) between 0.28 GeV/c and 0.86 GeV/c. The \(\overline{\Lambda}\) polarization is consistent with zero.

- Abstract
The direct CP violation parameter Re(ε′/ε) has been measured from the decay rates of neutral kaons into two pions using the NA48 detector at the CERN SPS. With 3.3 million KL → π0π0 events collected during the 1998 and 1999 running periods, a result of Re(ε′/ε) = (15.0 ± 2.7) × 10-4 has been obtained. The result combined with the published 1997 sample is Re(ε′/ε) = (15.3 ± 2.6) × 10-4.

- Abstract
The rate of the decay of the neutral K meson into KL0 → μμγ has been measured with the NA48 detector at the CERN SPS. A total of 59 events has been observed with an estimated background of 14 events. The overall Kaon flux was determined to be 1.2 × 109. This observation corresponds to a branching ratio of (3.4 ± 0.6stat ± 0.4sys) × 10-7. Using this branching ratio the parameter αK* describing the relative strength of the two contributing amplitudes to this decay, through intermediate pseudoscalar or vector-like mesons, was measured to be αK*= -0.04-0.21+0.24. © Springer-Verlag 1997.

- Abstract
Data from NA31 experiment at CERN have been used to measure the decay KS → γγ. From 69 candidate events of the type K0 → γγ, 52 events can be attributed to KL → γγ and one event is expected from background processes. The ratio of the relative decay widths R = Γ(KS → γγ) Γ(KL → γγ) is measured to be R = 2.2 ± 1.0(stat.) ± 0.3(syst.) ± 0.2(ext.) where the external systematic error is due to the experimental uncertainty in the branching ratio of the decay KL → γγ. This translates into a branching ratio of BR(KS → γγ) = (2.2 ± 1.1) × 10-6. If these data are combined with the published data from an earlier data taking period with the same experiment, the ratio R is determined to be R = 2.35 ± 0.75(stat.) ± 0.4(syst.) + 7.5 · (1 - BR(KL → γγ) 5.86 × 10-4) where the last term accounts for the dependence on the measured KL → γγ branching ratio. The corresponding branching ratio for KS → γγ is BR(KS → γγ) = (2.4 ± 0.9) × 10-6. The measurement is a sensitive test of chiral perturbation theory and in good agreement with theoretical predictions. © 1995.

The decay rate of the long-lived neutral K meson into the e +e -e +e - final state has been measured with the NA48 detector at the CERN SPS. Using data collected in 1998 and 1999, a total of 200 events has been observed with negligible background. - Abstract
We present the first observation of the decay KS → π+π-e+e- based upon the data collected in 1998 by the NA48 experiment at CERN. We have identified a clean sample of 56 events with negligible background contamination. Using KL → π+π-πD/0 decays as normalization sample, the branching ratio is measured to be BR(KS → π+π-e+e-) = [4,5 ± 0.7 (stat) ± 0.4(syst)] × 10-5. This result is in good agreement with the theoretical expectations from the mechanism of inner bremsstrahlung. © 2000 Elsevier Science B.V.

Data from the NA31 experiment at the CERN SPS have been used for the first search for the decay mode KL → 3γ. Seven events have been found with an estimated background of 6.7 ± 1.5 events. The corresponding upper limit for the branching ratio is Γ(KL → 3γ) Γ(KL → all) = 2.4 × 10-7 at the 90% confidence level, assuming a phase-space decay distribution. © 1995.

A new precision measurement of the Ξ0 mass has been performed at the NA48 experiment at the CERN SPS. The value obtained is [1314.82±0.06 (stat.) ±0.2 (syst.)] MeV/c2. The branching ratios of Xi;0 radiative decays have been measured as: Br(Ξ0 → Λγ) = [1.90 ± 0.34(stat.) ± 0.19(syst.)] · 10-3 and Br(Ξ0 → ∑0γ) = [3.14 ± 0.76(stat.) ± 0.32(syst.)] · 10-3.

- Abstract
This Letter reports on a new high precision measurement of the form factors of the KL → π± μ∓ νμ decay. The data sample of about 2.3 × 106 events was recorded in 1999 by the NA48 experiment at CERN. Studying the Dalitz plot density we measured a linear, λ+′ = (20.5 ± 2.2stat ± 2.4syst) × 10-3, and a quadratic, λ+″ = (2.6 ± 0.9stat ± 1.0syst) × 10-3 term in the power expansion of the vector form factor. No evidence was found for a second order term for the scalar form factor; the linear slope was determined to be λ0 = (9.5 ± 1.1stat ± 0.8syst) × 10-3. Using a linear fit our results were: λ+ = (26.7 ± 0.6stat ± 0.8syst) × 10-3 and λ0 = (11.7 ± 0.7stat ± 1.0syst) × 10-3. A pole fit of the form factors yields: mV = (905 ± 9stat ± 17syst) MeV / c2 and mS = (1400 ± 46stat ± 53syst) MeV / c2. © 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

- Abstract
The KL → π+π-e +e- and KS → π+π -e+e- decay modes have been studied in detail using the NA48 detector at the CERN SPS. Based on the data collected during the 1998 and 1999 run periods, a sample of 1162 KL → π +π-e+e- candidates has been observed with an expected background level of 36.9 events, yielding the branching ratio measurement BR(KL → π+π -e+e-) = (3.08 ± 0.20) × 10 -7. The distribution of events in the sinφ cosφ variable, where φ is the angle between the π+π- and the e+e- decay planes in the kaon centre of mass, is found to exhibit a large CP-violating asymmetry with the value Aφ = (14.2 ± 3.6)%. For the KS → π+π -e+e- decay channel, 621 candidates have been identified in the 1999 data sample with an estimated background contribution of 0.7 event. The corresponding branching ratio has been determined to be BR(K S → π+π-e+e-) = (4.71 ± 0.32) × 10-5. The combined value of this measurement with the published 1998 result is BR(KS → π +π-e+e-) = (4.69 ± 0.30) × 10-5. No asymmetry is observed in this decay mode. Our results are in good agreement with theoretical predictions based on a phenomenological description of radiative kaon decays. The form factor parameters a1/a2 and g̃M1 in the K L → π+π-e+e- direct emission process as well as the value of the K0 charge radius have been extracted from the data.

- Abstract
We present a measurement of the ratio of the decay rates Γ (KL → π+ π-) / Γ (KL → π± e∓ ν), denoted as ΓK 2 π / ΓK e 3. The analysis is based on data taken during a dedicated run in 1999 by the NA48 experiment at the CERN SPS. Using a sample of 47 000 K2 π and five million Ke 3 decays, we find ΓK 2 π / ΓK e 3 = (4.835 ± 0.022stat . ± 0.016syst .) × 10-3. From this we derive the branching ratio of the CP violating decay KL → π+ π- and the CP violation parameter | η+ - |. Excluding the CP conserving direct photon emission component KL → π+ π- γ, we obtain the results BR (KL → π+ π-) = (1.941 ± 0.019) × 10-3 and | η+ - | = (2.223 ± 0.012) × 10-3. © 2006 Elsevier B.V. The K(+)→π(+) ν̅ν branching ratio is one of the key observables to test the Standard Model. The NA62 experiment has been designed to measure this branching ratio with a 10% precision. Most of the experiment systems have been commissioned during 2014 and 2015 runs and physics data have been recorded. The analysis of this data shows performances close to the nominal ones.
