Abstract

Ba3Yb2Zn5O11 is unique among breathing pyrochlore compounds for being in the nearly decoupled limit where inter-tetrahedron interactions are weak, hosting isolated clusters or "molecular magnet" like tetrahedra of magnetic ytterbium (Yb3+) ions. In this work, we present the first study carried out on single-crystal samples of the breathing pyrochlore Ba3Yb2Zn5O11, using a variety of magnetometry and neutron scattering techniques along with theoretical modeling. We employ inelastic neutron scattering to investigate the magnetic dynamics as a function of applied field (with respect to both magnitude and direction) down to a temperature of 70 mK, where inelastic scattering reveals dispersionless bands of excitations as found in earlier powder sample studies, in good agreement with a single-tetrahedron model. However, diffuse neutron scattering at zero field and dc-susceptibility at finite field exhibit features suggesting the presence of excitations at low-energy that are not captured by the single tetrahedron model. Analysis of the local structure down to 2 K via pair distribution function analysis finds no evidence of structural disorder. We conclude that effects beyond the single tetrahedron model are important in describing the low-energy, low temperature physics of Ba3Yb2Zn5O11, but their nature remains undetermined.

Abstract

We investigate the thermodynamic properties of the ytterbium-based triangular lattice compound Ba3Yb(BO3)3. The results demonstrate the absence of any long-range ordering down to 56 mK. Analysis of the magnetization, susceptibility and specific heat measurements suggests that Ba3Yb(BO3)3 may realize a S = 1/2 quantum dipole lattice, in which the dominant interaction is the long range dipole-dipole coupling on the geometrically frustrated triangular lattice, and exchange interactions are subdominant or negligible.

Let $\mathbf{W}\in\mathbb{C}^{n\times n}$ be a {\it single-spiked} Wishart matrix in the class $\mathbf{W}\sim \mathcal{CW}_n(m,\mathbf{I}_n+ \theta \mathbf{v}\mathbf{v}^\dagger) $ with $m\geq n$, where $\mathbf{I}_n$ is the $n\times n$ identity matrix, $\mathbf{v}\in\mathbb{C}^{n\times 1}$ is an arbitrary vector with unit Euclidean norm, $\theta\geq 0$ is a non-random parameter, and $(\cdot)^\dagger$ represents the conjugate-transpose operator. Let $\mathbf{u}_1$ and $\mathbf{u}_n$ denote the eigenvectors corresponding to the samllest and the largest eigenvalues of $\mathbf{W}$, respectively. This paper investigates the probability density function (p.d.f.) of the random quantity $Z_{\ell}^{(n)}=\left|\mathbf{v}^\dagger\mathbf{u}_\ell\right|^2\in(0,1)$ for $\ell=1,n$. In particular, we derive a finite dimensional closed-form p.d.f. for $Z_{1}^{(n)}$ which is amenable to asymptotic analysis as $m,n$ diverges with $m-n$ fixed. It turns out that, in this asymptotic regime, the scaled random variable $nZ_{1}^{(n)}$ converges in distribution to $\chi^2_2/2(1+\theta)$, where $\chi_2^2$ denotes a chi-squared random variable with two degrees of freedom. This reveals that $\mathbf{u}_1$ can be used to infer information about the spike. On the other hand, the finite dimensional p.d.f. of $Z_{n}^{(n)}$ is expressed as a double integral in which the integrand contains a determinant of a square matrix of dimension $(n-2)$. Abstract

The growing understanding of the role of extracellular vesicles (EVs) in embryo-maternal communication has sparked considerable interest in their therapeutic potential within assisted reproductive technology, particularly in enhancing implantation success. However, the major obstacle remains the large-scale production of EVs, and there is still a gap in understanding how different culture systems affect the characteristics of the EVs. In the current study, trophoblast analogue human chorionic carcinoma cell line was cultivated in both conventional monolayer culture (2D) and as spheroids in suspension culture (3D) and how the cell growth environment affects the physical, biochemical and cellular signalling properties of EVs produced by them was studied. Interestingly, the 3D system was more active in secreting EVs compared to the 2D system, while no significant differences were observed in terms of morphology, size, and classical EV protein marker expression between EVs derived from the two culture systems. There were substantial differences in the proteomic cargo profile and cellular signalling potency of EVs derived from the two culture systems. Notably, 2D EVs were more potent in inducing a cellular response in endometrial epithelial cells (EECs) compared to 3D EVs. Therefore, it is essential to recognize that the biological activity of EVs depends not only on the cell of origin but also on the cellular microenvironment of the parent cell. In conclusion, caution is warranted when selecting an EV production platform, especially for assessing the functional and therapeutic potential of EVs through in vitro studies.

Abstract

Introduction Intimate partner violence (IPV) is a global public health problem. Although both men and women experience IPV, the burden is more on women. To address IPV effectively, it is important to understand the factors that cause IPV including the socioeconomic factors. However, there is an inadequacy of knowledge on how socioeconomic factors at different levels affect IPV. Hence, the objective is to review the individual-level socioeconomic factors associated with IPV victimisation of women and girls.Methods and analysis The search strategy was developed to identify publications from January 2010 to 30 June 2024. The selected electronic databases of PubMed/MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, PsycINFO, Web of Science, Scopus and Science Direct will be searched. The eligibility criteria for data collection are based on participants/population (women and girls), exposure (socioeconomic factors) and outcome (IPV). In primary search, the title and abstracts will be screened and reference lists of selected articles will be screened for additional studies. Two researchers will independently screen the articles, and in any disagreements, a third researcher will be consulted. The data will be tabulated to present the study and participant characteristics, comparison descriptors between victims and non-victims, inclusion and exclusion criteria, primary and secondary outcomes data, results, limitations and implications. A quality assessment will be performed on the selected studies to avoid bias. A narrative synthesis will summarise the findings.Ethics and dissemination Ethical approval was waived because only secondary data are used. The protocol will be published, and the findings will be disseminated via publication in a peer-reviewed journal.PROSPERO registration number CRD42022373535.
