Cinquième groupe de travail IMROP/FAO Le cinquième groupe de travail destiné à l’évaluation des stocks et l’aménagement des pêcheries de la zone économique exclusive mauritanienne s’est réuni à l’Institut Mauritanien de Recherches Océanographiques et des Pêches (IMROP) du 9 au 17 décembre 2002. Les objectifs de ce groupe de travail étaient d’actualiser les résultats des groupes de travail précédents, en utilisant les nouvelles informations disponibles ; d’établir un diagnostic des différents stocks et pêcheries afin de définir les potentiels de capture ainsi que les caractéristiques de l’effort permissible et d’évaluer l’impact des mesures d’aménagement actuellement en vigueur et identifier les perspectives à venir. Les résultats obtenus ont contribué à la formulation de recommandations visant, tout d’abord la mise en place de plans d’aménagement cohérents, et ensuite à définir les impératifs de recherche de l’IMROP. Après un bref rappel du contexte dans lequel se situe ce travail, l’évolution des prises accessoires des pêcheries crevettière et merluttière dans les eaux mauritaniennes est analysée de 1950 à 2000. Ces prises sont constituées principalement de poissons démersaux (représentés essentiellement par les Sparidés), de céphalopodes (poulpe, seiches et calmar) et de petits pélagiques., Following a brief recall of the context of this work, the by-catch of shrimp and hake fisheries operating in Mauritanian waters are analysed for the years 1950 to 2000. This by-catch is mostly composed of demersal fishes (essentially Sparidae), cephalopods (common octopus, cuttlefishes and European squid) and small coastal pelagic fishes.

Helminthic infections concomitant with malaria are common in inter-tropical areas. A recent study showed that mice co-infected with Schistosoma mansoni and Plasmodium chabaudi develop higher P. chabaudi parasitaemia and had a higher mortality rate. This important observation deserved to be further investigated among human populations. Malaria attacks were recorded in 512 children aged 6 - 15 years living in Richard Toll ( Northern Senegal) among whom 336 were infected by S. mansoni, and 175 were not. The incidence rate of malaria attacks was significantly higher among S. mansoni-infected individuals, particularly those carrying the highest worm loads, as compared to uninfected subjects (26.6% versus 16,4 %). In contrast, the rate of malaria attacks was lower, without reaching significance, in medium grade S. mansoni infections. Thus, infection by S. mansoni affects susceptibility to malaria, but this can vary according to the intensity of parasite load. The immunological mechanisms underlying this dual effect need to be further explored.

Four hundred and seventy villagers of Ndombo, a village with recently established intensive transmission of Schistosoma mansoni in the Senegal River Basin, were enrolled in a study with the intention to assess hepatosplenic morbidity. All patients were examined parasitologically and by ultrasound. Hepatic fibrosis serum markers were determined in 153 adult patients (aminoterminal propeptide of procollagen type III, hyaluronan and laminin). By ultrasound, about 60% of the patients showed early stages of hepatic involvement, 3% of the patients unequivocally showed severe hepatosplenic pathology (grade 3 according to the Managil classification), whereas in another study performed in the same village 3 years earlier, no patients with severe hepatosplenic pathology had been found. No correlation between the aminoterminal propeptide of procollagen type III, hyaluronan or laminin and the ultrasound findings could be established. These hepatic fibrosis serum markers do not seem to be a sensitive method to detect early hepatic fibrosis in schistosomiasis.

Résumé L’analyse des échantillons prélevés sur les captures des crevettiers et merluttiers espagnols opérant dans les eaux mauritaniennes entre 1991 et 1994, a montré que ces pêcheries engendrent beaucoup de prises accessoires. Ces dernières varient entre 87% et 89% pour la pêcherie crevettière et dépassent 64% pour la pêcherie merluttière. Le rapport prises accessoires/capture espèce cible varie donc de 7 :1 à 8 :1 pour les crevettiers et se situerait à environ 2 :1 pour les merluttiers. Les prises accessoires sont constituées principalement de poissons démersaux (représentés essentiellement par les sparidés), de céphalopodes (poulpe, seiches et calmar) et de petits pélagiques. Les poissons démersaux sont largement dominants. Abstract From 1991 to 1994, samples were from catches on board of spanish shrimpers and hakers operating in the Mauritanian waters. It is shown that bycatch in the shrimp fishery varies between 87% to 89% of total catch for shrimpers and is about 64% for hake fishery. Also, the ratio bycatch/target species varies between 7:1 and 8:1 and is about 2:1 in the shrimp and hake fishery, respectively. Résumé : Après avoir exposé les connaissances sur la distribution géographique du crabe profond (Geryon maritae) dans les eaux mauritaniennes et abordé quelques aspects de son écologie, ce travail s’est intéressé à la biologie de l’espèce (croissance, sex-ratio, période de ponte et fécondité). Abstract: Having reviewed what is known of the geographic distribution of the deep crab (Geryon maritae) in Mauritanian waters, and outlined some aspects of its ecology, this paper cowhides the biological parameters of this species (growth, sex-ratio, spawning period and fecundity). Résumé : En 15 jours de pêche expérimentale, un caseyeur japonais a pêché près de 40.000 kg de crabe profond (Geryon maritae) représentant 12.032 kg de produit fini sous forme de farcis et pattes. Le rapport Capture/Produit fini a été estimé à 3, et celui de Poids total du crabe/Poids des pattes à environ 1,7. Abstract : During 15 days of experimental fishing, a Japanese pot crabber produced 12,032 kg meat and claws of deep crab, Geryon maritae product (stuffed and legs) from catch around 40,000 kg. This boat could have achieved a catch of about 860 tons/year. The ratio Catch/Finished product is estimated at 3, and the ratio of the total weight of crab/weight of legs at about 1,7.
