Poetic devices implicitly work towards inducing the reader to associate intended and expressed meaning to the sounds of the poem. In turn, sounds may be organized a priori into categories and assigned presumed meaning as suggested by traditional literary studies. To compute the degree of harmony and disharmony, I have automatically extracted the sound grids of all the sonnets by William Shakespeare and have combined them with the themes expressed by their contents. In a first experiment, sounds have been associated with lexically and semantically based sentiment analysis, obtaining an 80% of agreement. In a second experiment, sentiment analysis has been substituted by Appraisal Theory, thus obtaining a more fine-grained interpretation that combines dis-harmony with irony. The computation for Francis Webb is based on his most popular 100 poems and combines automatic semantically and lexically based sentiment analysis with sound grids. The results produce visual maps that clearly separate poems into three clusters: negative harmony, positive harmony and disharmony, where the latter instantiates the need by the poet to encompass the opposites in a desperate attempt to reconcile them. Shakespeare and Webb have been chosen to prove the applicability of the method proposed in general contexts of poetry, exhibiting the widest possible gap at all linguistic and poetic levels.

Lung cancer (LC) is the deadliest malignancy worldwide. In an operable stage I–III patient setting, the detection of minimal residual disease (MRD) after curative treatment could identify patients at higher risk of relapse. In this context, the study of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) is emerging as a useful tool to identify patients who could benefit from an adjuvant treatment, and patients who could avoid adverse events related to a more aggressive clinical management. On the other hand, ctDNA profiling presents technical, biological and standardization challenges before entering clinical practice as a decisional tool. In this paper, we review the latest advances regarding the role of ctDNA in identifying MRD and in predicting patients’ prognosis, with a particular focus on clinical trials investigating the potential of ctDNA, the technical challenges to address and the biological parameters that influence the MRD detection.

In this work, a new method for the design of band-pass filters in an empty waveguide by using periodic structures is presented in a theoretical and experimental way. The proposed filter topology uses a periodic profile of two heights in the central part of an Empty Single-Ridge Waveguide (ESRW) for the generation of an Electromagnetic Band-Gap (EBG), and it provides simple unit cell design parameters to produce specific dispersion characteristics. The implementation of two band-pass filters with different fractional bandwidths (36% and 55%) and different characteristics in the rejection band is proposed, where to minimize the mismatch in the ESRW filter’s passband, a tapering technique is used that follows a Kaiser distribution for the EBG. To experimentally validate the design concept, a band-pass filter with a fractional bandwidth of 55% centered on 5.45 GHz is manufactured, using a low-cost 3D printer, which allows the rapid manufacture of complex geometries at a very reduced price. The experimental results validate the simulated response of the implemented ESRW band-pass filter.

Granulomas have been defined as inflammatory infiltrates formed by recruitment of macrophages and T cells. The three-dimensional spherical structure typically consists of a central core of tissue resident macrophages which may merge into multinucleated giant cells surrounded by T cells at the periphery. Granulomas may be triggered by infectious and non-infectious antigens. Cutaneous and visceral granulomas are common in inborn errors of immunity (IEI), particularly among patients with chronic granulomatous disease (CGD), combined immunodeficiency (CID), and common variable immunodeficiency (CVID). The estimated prevalence of granulomas in IEI ranges from 1%–4%. Infectious agents causing granulomas such Mycobacteria and Coccidioides presenting atypically may be ‘sentinel’ presentations for possible underlying immunodeficiency. Deep sequencing of granulomas in IEI has revealed non-classical antigens such as wild-type and RA27/3 vaccine-strain Rubella virus. Granulomas in IEI are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. The heterogeneity of granuloma presentation in IEI presents challenges for mechanistic approaches to treatment. In this review, we discuss the main infectious triggers for granulomas in IEI and the major forms of IEI presenting with ‘idiopathic’ non-infectious granulomas. We also discuss models to study granulomatous inflammation and the impact of deep-sequencing technology while searching for infectious triggers of granulomatous inflammation. We summarize the overarching goals of management and highlight the therapeutic options reported for specific granuloma presentations in IEI.

IntroductionPredicting hearing outcome in sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL) is challenging, as well as detecting the underlying pathomechanisms. SSNHL could be associated with vestibular damage since cochleo-vestibular structures share the same vascularization, along with being in close anatomical proximity. Whereas viral inflammations and autoimmune/vascular disorders most likely represent the involved aetiologies, early-stage Menière's disease (MD) can also present with SSNHL. Since an early treatment could beneficially influence hearing outcome, understanding the possible etiology plays a pivotal role in orienting the most appropriate treatment. We aimed to evaluate the extent of vestibular damage in patients presenting with SSNHL with or without vertigo, investigate the prognostic role of vestibular dysfunctions on hearing recovery and detect specific lesion patterns related to the underlying pathomechanisms.MethodsWe prospectively evaluated 86 patients with SSNHL. Audio-vestibular investigation included pure-tone/speech/impedance audiometry, cervical/ocular-VEMPs, vHIT and video-Frenzel examination. White matter lesions (WML) were evaluated on brain-MRI. Patients were followed-up and divided into “SSNHL-no-vertigo,” “SSNHL+vertigo” and “MD” subgroups.ResultsHearing was more impaired in “SSNHL+vertigo” patients who exhibited either down-sloping or flat-type audiograms, and was less impaired in “MD” where low frequencies were mostly impaired (p < 0.001). Otolith receptors were more frequently involved than semicircular canals (SCs). Although the “SSNHL-no-vertigo” subgroup exhibited the lowest vestibular impairment (p < 0.001), 52% of patients developed otolith dysfunctions and 72% developed nystagmus. Only “MD” subjects showed anterior SC impairment and upbeating spontaneous/positional nystagmus. They more frequently exhibited cervical-VEMPs frequency tuning (p = 0.036) and ipsilesional spontaneous nystagmus (p < 0.001). “SSNHL+vertigo” subjects presented with more frequently impaired cervical-VEMPs and posterior SC and with higher number of impaired receptors (p < 0.001). They mainly exhibited contralesional spontaneous and vibration-induced nystagmus (p < 0.05) and only they showed the highest WML score and “vascular” lesion patterns (p < 0.001). Concerning the outcomes, hearing was better in “MD” and worse in “SSNHL+vertigo” (p < 0.001). Hearing recovery was mostly affected by cervical-VEMPs impairment and the number of involved receptors (p < 0.05). Patients with “vascular” lesion patterns presented with the highest HL degree and WML score (p ≤ 0.001), while none of them exhibited a complete hearing recovery (p = 0.026).ConclusionsOur data suggest that vestibular evaluation in SSNHL can provide useful information on hearing recovery and underlying aetiologies.

Abstract. High-resolution, well-dated climate archives provide anopportunity to investigate the dynamic interactions of climate patternsrelevant for future projections. Here, we present data from a new, annuallydated ice core record from the eastern Ross Sea, named the Roosevelt IslandClimate Evolution (RICE) ice core. Comparison of this record with climatereanalysis data for the 1979–2012 interval shows that RICE reliably capturestemperature and snow precipitation variability in the region. Trends over thepast 2700 years in RICE are shown to be distinct from those in WestAntarctica and the western Ross Sea captured by other ice cores. For most ofthis interval, the eastern Ross Sea was warming (or showing isotopicenrichment for other reasons), with increased snow accumulation and perhapsdecreased sea ice concentration. However, West Antarctica cooled and thewestern Ross Sea showed no significant isotope temperature trend. Thispattern here is referred to as the Ross Sea Dipole. Notably, during theLittle Ice Age, West Antarctica and the western Ross Sea experienced colderthan average temperatures, while the eastern Ross Sea underwent a period ofwarming or increased isotopic enrichment. From the 17th century onwards, thisdipole relationship changed. All three regions show current warming, withsnow accumulation declining in West Antarctica and the eastern Ross Sea butincreasing in the western Ross Sea. We interpret this pattern as reflectingan increase in sea ice in the eastern Ross Sea with perhaps the establishmentof a modern Roosevelt Island polynya as a local moisture source for RICE.
