Breast cancers are most frequently oestrogen receptor (ER) and progesterone receptor (PR) positive and [18F]Fluorodeoxyglucose PET-CT (FDG) has lower sensitivity for these subtypes. The gastrin-releasing peptide receptor (GRPR) is overexpressed in ER+/PR+ breast cancers. This study assessed the safety and potential of [64Cu]Cu-Sarcophagine (SAR)-Bombesin PET/CT (BBN) in re-staging metastatic ER+/PR+/human epidermal growth-factor-2-negative (HER2-) breast cancer. Seven patients with metastatic ER+/PR+/HER2- breast cancer undergoing staging underwent [64Cu]Cu-SAR-BBN PET-CT. Bloods, vital signs and electrocardiogram, blood tracer-clearance and dosimetry were undertaken. GRPR status was assessed in available metastatic biopsy samples. Staging with conventional imaging ([18F]FDG, bone scan and diagnostic CT) was within 3 weeks of [64Cu]Cu-SAR-BBN PET/CT. PET scans were assessed visually and quantitatively. Seven patients underwent imaging. One of the seven had de-novo metastatic breast cancer and six of the seven recurrent metastatic disease. Two of the seven had lobular subtype. No adverse events were reported. All seven patients were positive on conventional imaging (six of seven on FDG). [64Cu]Cu-SAR-BBN imaging was positive in five of the seven. Both [64Cu]Cu-SAR-BBN-negative patients had disease identified on [18F]FDG. One patient was [64Cu]Cu-SAR-BBN positive/[18F]FDG negative. Four of seven patients were [64Cu]Cu-SAR-BBN positive/[18F]FDG positive. In these four, mean SUVmax was higher for [64Cu]Cu-SAR-BBN than [18F]FDG (SUVmax 15 vs. 12). In the classical lobular subtype (two of seven), [64Cu]Cu-SAR-BBN was more avid compared to [18F]FDG (SUVmax 20 vs. 11, and 20 vs. 64Cu]Cu-SAR-BBN to be 1.9 mSv. [64Cu]Cu-SAR-BBN PET/CT appears safe and may have diagnostic value in metastatic ER+/PR+/HER2- breast cancer, particularly the lobular subtype. Further evaluation is warranted.

Practical relevanceRespiratory endoscopy is a useful diagnostic tool to evaluate the airways for the presence of mass lesions or foreign material while allowing for sample collection for cytologic and microbiologic assessment. While bronchial disease (eosinophilic or neutrophilic) is the most common lower respiratory disease identified in cats, infectious, anomalous and neoplastic conditions can clinically mimic inflammatory bronchial disease. Diagnostic imaging is unable to define the etiology for clinical signs of cough, tachypnea or respiratory difficulty, necessitating visual evaluation and collection of airway samples. Endoscopy allows intervention that can be life-saving and also confirmation of disease, which is important given that life-long medication is likely to be required for management of inflammatory airway disease.Patient groupCats with either airway or pulmonary disease benefit from laryngoscopy, tracheoscopy and bronchoscopy to determine an etiologic diagnosis. In the best situation, animals that require these procedures present early in the course of disease before clinical decompensation precludes anesthetic intervention. However, in some instances, these tests must be performed in unstable cats, which heightens the risk of the procedure. Cats that do not respond to empiric medical therapy can also benefit from bronchoscopic evaluation.Clinical challengesDue to the small size of feline airways and the tendency for cats to develop laryngospasm, passage of endoscopic equipment can be difficult. Bronchoconstriction can lead to hemoglobin desaturation with oxygen and respiratory compromise.Evidence baseThis article reviews published studies and case reports pertaining to the diagnostic approach to feline respiratory disease, focusing specifically on endoscopic examination of the lower airways in cats. It also discusses appropriate case selection, equipment, endoscopic techniques and visual findings based primarily on the authors' experiences.

Quantum Physics - Abstract
A closed-form solution to the energy-based stochastic Schrodinger equation with a time-dependent coupling is obtained. The solution is algebraic in character, and is expressed directly in terms of independent random data. The data consist of (i) a random variable H which has the distribution P(H=E_i) = pi_i, where pi_i is the transition probability from the initial state to the Luders state with energy E_i; and (ii) an independent P-Brownian motion, where P is the physical probability measure associated with the dynamics of the reduction process. When the coupling is time-independent, it is known that state reduction occurs asymptotically--that is to say, over an infinite time horizon. In the case of a time-dependent coupling, we show that if the magnitude of the coupling decreases sufficiently rapidly, then the energy variance will be reduced under the dynamics, but the state need not reach an energy eigenstate. This situation corresponds to the case of a ``partial'' or ``incomplete'' measurement of the energy. We also construct an example of a model where the opposite situation prevails, in which complete state reduction is achieved after the passage of a finite period of time., Comment: 27 pages

Dear, Denise V.
- Abstract
This article provides quantitative evidence on the effect on learning outcomes of contrasting teaching styles applied to a class of Level 3 final-year students on a BTEC Applied Science course within a further education college in the UK. Two topics within a unit were taught using either a student-centred or teacher-centric (instructional) approach. Learning outcomes were monitored via tests aimed at both surface and deeper learning. Analysis showed that there was no significant difference between instructional or student-centred modes of teaching with respect to surface learning outcomes. However, analysis showed that a significant difference (p = 0.025) had occurred in deeper learning outcomes between the two modes of teaching. Interestingly, in this study, deeper learning was significantly improved after instructional teaching as opposed to student-centred teaching. Possible reasons for this are discussed and related to the role of instruction in vocational science education within FE. Preferences for teaching style were also obtained from the students via a survey and this indicated that PowerPoints were considered helpful whereas practical work and research tasks were very helpful to their learning.

Climate change and the urgency of decarbonizing the built environment are driving technological innovation in the way we deliver thermal comfort to occupants. These changes, in turn, seem to be setting the directions for contemporary thermal comfort research. This article presents a literature review of major changes, developments, and trends in the field of thermal comfort research over the last 20 years. One of the main paradigm shift was the fundamental conceptual reorientation that has taken place in thermal comfort thinking over the last 20 years; a shift away from the physically based determinism of Fanger’s comfort model toward the mainstream and acceptance of the adaptive comfort model. Another noticeable shift has been from the undesirable toward the desirable qualities of air movement. Additionally, sophisticated models covering the physics and physiology of the human body were developed, driven by the continuous challenge to model thermal comfort at the same anatomical resolution and to combine these localized signals into a coherent, global thermal perception. Finally, the demand for ever increasing building energy efficiency is pushing technological innovation in the way we deliver comfortable indoor environments. These trends, in turn, continue setting the directions for contemporary thermal comfort research for the next decades.

Open-plan office layout is commonly assumed to facilitate communication and interaction between co-workers, promoting workplace satisfaction and team-work effectiveness. On the other hand, open-plan layouts are widely acknowledged to be more disruptive due to uncontrollable noise and loss of privacy. Based on the occupant survey database from Center for the Built Environment (CBE), empirical analyses indicated that occupants assessed Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) issues in different ways depending on the spatial configuration (classified by the degree of enclosure) of their workspace. Enclosed private offices clearly outperformed open-plan layouts in most aspects of IEQ, particularly in acoustics, privacy and the proxemics issues. Benefits of enhanced ‘ease of interaction’ were smaller than the penalties of increased noise level and decreased privacy resulting from open-plan office configuration.

- Abstract
California is the only state to require school-violence training as a condition for state certification of teachers, school administrators, and pupil service personnel. This report presents findings of a study conducted by the State of California Commission on Teacher Credentialing's advisory panel on school violence. The study identifies the effects of school violence on students and school effectiveness and describes the preparation of certified personnel to cope with such behavior. Data were derived from focus-group sessions conducted with over 600 participants and from surveys that elicited responses from over 1,000 California educators, 360 educators from colleges and universities in 44 states, almost 100 school board members, and credential coordinators from 49 states. Focus group participants most frequently mentioned ethnic/cultural ignorance and gangs as the causes of school violence. They most frequently suggested implementing a multicultural curriculum and involving community agencies and law enforcement in partnerships as strategies to address school violence. They also reported that staff need training in multicultural sensitivity and conflict management. Of the hundreds of different experiences with violence, no single category was mentioned by more than 10 percent of the focus group. A large percentage of survey respondents said that violence was not a very big problem. Most educators responding to the survey felt unprepared to address school violence, and over 60 percent of all educators said that they wanted school-violence training. Extensive recommendations are made for teachers, administrators, student personnel service providers, other educators, educational system consumers, criminal justice agencies, local communities, and the Legislature. Thirty-two figures are included. (LMI)

- Abstract
Government officials, researchers, and especially educators must consider the "big picture" as they develop strategies to address violence in schools. This report presents findings of a study conducted by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing's advisory panel on school violence. The study identifies the effects of school violence on students and school effectiveness and describes the preparation of certified personnel to cope with such behavior. Data were derived from focus-group sessions conducted with over 600 participants and from surveys of over 700 California credential candidates and their professors; 320 recently credentialed teachers, administrators and student personnel service providers; almost 100 school board members; 49 credential coordinators from 49 states; and more than 360 higher-education teacher-training coordinators nationwide. Contrary to popular belief, school violence in the broad context was not seen by educators as a very big problem. Verbal intimidation and bullying occurred frequently on campuses, but only 2 to 3 percent of educators saw these subtler forms of violence. Most educators reported feeling inadequately prepared to address school violence. Fights and gang activities were the most frequently mentioned forms of violence by focus group participants overall. Multicultural sensitivity training was the most frequently mentioned strategy to address school violence. Extensive recommendations are made for teachers, administrators, student personnel service providers, other educators, educational system consumers, criminal justice agencies, local communities, and the Legislature. Eight figures are included. (LMI)

This study explores the relationship between the perceived performance of specific IEQ factors and occupants’ overall satisfaction with their workspace. In particular we examine the influence of ventilation system type (i.e. Air-Conditioned AC, Mixed-Mode MM, Naturally Ventilated NV) on that relationship. Statistical analyses were conducted on the post-occupancy survey database from the University of California at Berkeley’s Center for Built Environment (CBE) to estimate the relative importance of individual IEQ factors on occupants’ overall satisfaction, depending on whether or not the occupants were satisfied with the IEQ factor in question. Based on these analyses, 15 IEQ factors were classified as Basic Factors, Bonus Factors or Proportional Factors, according to their relationship with overall satisfaction, as described in Kano’s satisfaction model. We found that the classification of some IEQ factors differed for the occupants of AC, MM and NV buildings, suggesting that occupants of buildings with different ventilation types have different expectations, and respond in different ways to various aspects of the indoor environment. A noticeable difference was in thermal environmental conditions: in NV buildings, good thermal conditions were associated with significantly enhanced overall satisfaction (i.e. strong positive impact), but there was little discernible adverse impact, even when thermal performance was deemed to be poor. In AC buildings, on the other hand, thermal conditions were more directly associated with negative overall evaluations of workspace by occupants (i.e. greater negative impact than positive impact). Finally, in MM buildings, thermal conditions exerted both positive and negative impacts of comparable intensities on overall satisfaction.

Despite a paucity of rigorous scientific evidence causally linking Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) issues to office occupants’ productivity, there is a widespread belief that such causality exists; excellent or poor IEQ translate into productivity gains or losses respectively. The aim of this study is to better understand relationship between perceived building performance on specific IEQ factors and occupants’ overall satisfaction with their workspace. Kano’s satisfaction model, developed originally in the context of marketing, is adapted and tested for its suitability in the context of building occupants’ satisfaction. Analyses were conducted on the occupant survey database from Center for the Built Environment (CBE) to estimate individual impacts of 15 IEQ factors on occupants’ overall satisfaction, depending on the building’s performance in relation to those IEQ factors. These empirical analyses identified nonlinearitiesbetween some IEQ factors and occupant satisfaction; some IEQ factors had a predominantly negative impact on occupants’ overall satisfaction when the building underperformed. These have been labelled Basic Factors in the Kano Model of satisfaction and include ‘temperature’, ‘noise level’, ‘amount of space’, ‘visual privacy’, ‘adjustability of furniture’, ‘colours & textures’ and ‘workspace cleanliness’. Other IEQ factors had a predominantly linear relationship with overall satisfaction e increments or decrements of equal magnitude in the building’s performance on these factors lead to a broadly similar magnitude of enhancement or diminution of occupants’ overall satisfaction. These were labelled Proportional Factors, and include ‘air quality’, ‘amount of light’, ‘visual comfort’, ‘sound privacy’, ‘ease of interaction’, ‘comfort of furnishing’, ‘building cleanliness’ and ‘building maintenance’.

Objective Parental psychological distress is an influential predictor of maladaptive parenting practices, negative outcomes in children, and poorer outcomes of parenting programs. Despite these negative outcomes, treatment engagement among parents appears to be low. This study aimed to explore Australian parents’ history of help‐seeking behaviour and perceived barriers to psychological treatment for their own and their children's psychological wellbeing. Method A sample of 2,555 Australian parents completed an online survey exploring psychological distress, help‐seeking, perceived barriers to treatment for parents and their children, and interest in an online parental wellbeing course. Results Parents reported high levels of personal psychological distress (70.4% in the moderate to very high ranges) and high rates of emotional and behavioural difficulties in their children (34.2% in abnormal range). Parents were more likely to seek informal types of help‐seeking, such as advice from family and friends. They were less likely to enlist formal types of help seeking, such as psychotherapy. The most commonly endorsed barriers to seeking treatment for parents and their children included lack of time and money and the belief that mental health difficulties were insufficient to warrant treatment. However, parents expressed a high level of interest in a free online parental wellbeing course. Conclusion The findings highlight the need for effective and accessible psychological treatments to target the psychological wellbeing of parents and their dependent children. Early evidence suggests that an online parental wellbeing course may offer an acceptable alternative to face‐to‐face treatment that may overcome many barriers reported in this study.

Comparison Between 20% Mannitol, 3% NaCl and Hypertonic Sodium Lactate on Osmolarity and Brain Relaxation Score Brain Tumor Patient underwent Craniotomy Tumor Removal Background and Objective: Mannitol produce brain relaxation but associated with several side effects such as reduced intravascular volume, rebound in intracranial pressure and kidney failure. The use of 3% NaCl and hypertonic sodium lactate (HSL) may provide brain relaxation. Aim of this study is to examine increased osmolarity and brain relaxation score (BRS) in patient underwent craniotomy using 20% mannitol, 3% NaCl, and hypertonic sodium lactate. Subject and Method: This is a randomized control study of 39 brain tumor patients divided into three groups each obtained 2.5cc/kg 20% mannitol, 3% NaCl, and HSL. Result: there is no significant difference of osmolarity between the three groups 1 hour after administration of osmotherapy and during the opening of durameter (p0,05). BRS between the three groups have an equivalent median score (2,00), it means no significant difference in BRS (p0,05). A significantly increased diuresis in the administration of 20% mannitol, increased chloride to 3% NaCl and significant glucose increase in HSL. Conclusion: Administration of 20% mannitol, 3% NaCl and HSL produce the same brain relaxation and resulted in insignificant osmolarity differences.

Standard ,PMV ,acceptability ,category ,class A ,setpoint temperature - Abstract
It requires more energy to maintain a narrow indoor temperature range than a broader range, in which the building may be allowed to float with reduced conditioning for longer periods of time. A narrow range should presumably be preferable to the building occupants to justify its increased energy cost. At what widths are temperature ranges detected, preferred, or judged unacceptable? Three databases of occupant satisfaction in buildings are used to examine the acceptability of three classes of temperature range currently employed in the ISO and European standards, and proposed for the ASHRAE standard. These are alternatively identified as Class A, B, and C, or Category I, II, and III, but their specifications are identical. The A class (I category) is found to confer no relative satisfaction benefit to individuals or to realistic building occupancies. In addition, the differences in B and C class satisfaction are small.

- Abstract
Paediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome temporally associated with SARS-CoV-2 (PIMS-TS), also known as multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) emerged in April, 2020. The paediatric comparisons within the RECOVERY trial aimed to assess the effect of intravenous immunoglobulin or corticosteroids compared with usual care on duration of hospital stay for children with PIMS-TS and to compare tocilizumab (anti-IL-6 receptor monoclonal antibody) or anakinra (anti-IL-1 receptor antagonist) with usual care for those with inflammation refractory to initial treatment.

- Abstract
In energy absorption applications, post-yield behaviour is important. Lattice structures, having low relative densities, are an attractive way to obtain effective material properties that differ greatly from that of the parent material. These properties can be controlled through the manipulation of the cellular geometry, a concept that has been made significantly more attainable through the use of additive manufacturing (AM). Lattice structures of various geometries were designed, additively manufactured and tested to assess their structural integrity as well as to investigate the effect of varying the cell geometry on the overall performance of the structures. Uniaxial tensile and compressive tests were carried out on bulk material AM samples made of 316L, followed by tests on the lattice structures. Finite element (FE) analysis was also carried out and the results compared to the experimental data. The FE simulations were able to accurately predict the elastic response of both structures; however, the post-yield behaviour did not closely match the experimental data due to inadequate beam contact resolution in the FE model. The FE model yield stress was also overestimated in the regular lattice due to the presence of manufacturing defects found only in the manufactured test samples. The stochastic structure, both experimentally and in the FE model, displayed a transition in the elastic stiffness from a lower to a higher stiffness in the elastic region. This is due to changing load paths within the lattice from the beams in contact with the compression platens to the rest of the structure. This phenomenon did not occur within the regular structure.

- Abstract
Poisoning is a common presentation in emergency care and can occur in many situations. It is important to understand the priorities in the care of poisoned patients, the key principles in toxicology and the value of clinical signs and symptoms. Clinicians face challenges when dealing with uncertainty in undifferentiated patients, which can be minimized through appropriate self-directed learning. There is also value in departmental planning to avoid significant logistical issues. The future direction of emergency treatment of poisoning is likely to see improvements in primary prevention, reductions in protocol variation and new targets for treatment.

Urtica stimulans L.f., the basionym of the currently accepted name Dendrocnide stimulans (L.f.) Chew, and Urtica fruticosa L.f., were both published in 1782 by Linné filius in Supplementum plantarum and are here lectotypified with specimens from original material collected by Thunberg on Java. After its publication, U. fruticosa has only been cited as a synonym of Dendrocnide stimulans, but that is a misidentification. "Urtica paniculata Gaudich." was not validly published, appearing in the synonymy of Fleurya paniculata Gaudich. in 1830 (as "Urtica paniculata olim"), currently in Laportea ruderalis (G.Forst.) Chew, while Urtica paniculata Roxb. was validly published in 1832 as a legitimate name and is lectotypified here. Morus paniculata Roxb. was published in 1814 without a description, solely validated with reference to a description and a plate in Rumphius, Herbarium Amboinense. The information about the species Morus paniculata Roxb. and Urtica paniculata Roxb. may in part stem from the same trees grown in the Calcutta Botanic Garden, but the contexts in which Roxburgh published these two names are bibliographically distinct and without cross‐references; they stand as two independent names and are lectotypified on separate material. Urtica fruticosa L.f., Urtica paniculata Roxb., Morus paniculata Roxb. and Botrymorus paniculata (Roxb.) Miq. are all legitimate names and identified with Pipturus argenteus (G.Forst.) Wedd. (1869), a highly variable species occurring around and on islands in the Indian Ocean and the Pacific. Its basionym, Urtica argentea G.Forst., published in 1786, is antedated by Urtica fruticosa L.f., published in 1782. To avoid an unfortunate change of the widely used name Pipturus argenteus, Urtica fruticosa L.f. is proposed separately as a nomen rejiciendum under Art. 56. Notes are provided on the original material of names that have been confused with the above‐mentioned names, including Urtica fruticosa Wright., sphalm. (based on mixed material). - Abstract
Objectives: To assess the population health impact of high temperatures on workplace health and safety by estimating the burden of heat‐attributable occupational injury in Australia. Study design, setting: Retrospective observational study; estimation of burden of occupational injury in Australia attributable to high temperatures during 2014–19, based on Safe Work Australia (work‐related traumatic injury fatalities and workers' compensation databases) and Australian Institute of Health and Welfare data (Australian Burden of Disease Study and National Hospital Morbidity databases), and a meta‐analysis of climate zone‐specific risk data. Main outcome measure: Burden of heat‐attributable occupational injuries as disability‐adjusted life years (DALYs), comprising the numbers of years of life lived with disability (YLDs) and years of life lost (YLLs), nationally, by Köppen–Geiger climate zone, and by state and territory. Results: During 2014–19, an estimated 42 884 years of healthy life were lost to occupational injury, comprising 39 485 YLLs (92.1%) and 3399 YLDs (7.9%), at a rate of 0.80 DALYs per 1000 workers per year. A total of 967 occupational injury‐related DALYs were attributable to heat (2.3% of occupational injury‐related DALYs), comprising 890 YLLs (92%) and 77 YLDs (8%). By climate zone, the heat‐attributable proportion was largest in the tropical Am (12 DALYs; 3.5%) and Aw zones (34 DALYs; 3.5%); by state and territory, the proportion was largest in New South Wales and Queensland (each 2.9%), which also included the largest numbers of heat‐attributable occupational injury‐related DALYs (NSW: 379 DALYs, 39% of national total; Queensland: 308 DALYs; 32%). Conclusion: An estimated 2.3% of the occupational injury burden in Australia is attributable to high ambient temperatures. To prevent this burden increasing with global warming, adaptive measures and industry‐based policies are needed to safeguard workplace health and safety, particularly in heat‐exposed industries, such as agriculture, transport, and construction. Tetrahymena thermophila is the best studied of the ciliates, a diversified and successful lineage of eukaryotic protists. Mirroring the way in which many metazoans partition their germ line and soma into distinct cell types, ciliates separate germ line and soma into two distinct nuclei in a single cell. The diploid, transcriptionally silent micronucleus undergoes meiosis and fertilization during sexual reproduction and determines the genotype of the progeny; in contrast, the expressed macronucleus contains many copies of hundreds of small chromosomes, determines the cell's phenotype, and is inherited only through vegetative reproduction. Here we demonstrate the power of HAPPY physical mapping to aid the complete assembly of T. thermophila macronuclear chromosomes from shotgun sequence scaffolds. The finished genome, one of only two ciliate genomes shotgun sequenced, will shed valuable additional light upon the biology of this extraordinary, diverse, and, from a genomics standpoint, as yet largely unexplored evolutionary branch of eukaryotes.

- Abstract
Becoming a better teacher by learning and implementing new ways of teaching requires time, effort, persistence, and a belief that new strategies will enhance student learning. But when educational leaders try to improve teachers and teaching from the outside, by bringing in reformers to transform how teachers engage in the core business of teaching, reforms rarely stick because the first transformation that must occur is in the perspective of initially resistant teachers. This transformation in perspective comes, in part, from teachers working to improve the quality of teachers and teaching in their own schools by developing a common vision, trust in teacher leadership, and openness to learning. Teachers who promote change can make a lasting impact.

Past research (ASHRAE RP-884) demonstrated that occupants of naturally ventilated buildings are comfortable in a wider range of temperatures than occupants of buildings with centrally controlled HVAC systems. However, the exact influence of personal control in explaining these differences could only be hypothesized because of the limits of the existing field study data that formed the basis of that research. The objective of ASHRAE RP-1161 was to quantitatively investigate how personal control of operable windows in office settings influences local thermal conditions and occupant comfort. We conducted a field study in a naturally ventilated building where occupants had varying degrees of control over the windows. Utilizing continuous measurement of each subject’s workstation microclimate, plus a Web-based survey that subjects took several times a day and was cross-linked to concurrent physical assessments of workstation microclimatic conditions, we collected over 1000 survey responses in each of the two main seasons. The data show that occupants with different degrees of personal control had significantly diverse thermal responses, even when they experienced the same thermal environments and clothing and activity levels. Our findings offer further empirical support for the role of shifting expectations in the adaptive model of thermal comfort.

- Abstract
Paracetamol overdose is common. If left untreated, liver and/or renal failure can develop. Administration of the antidote, acetylcysteine, within 8–10 hours of overdose minimizes or prevents liver damage. After overdose, the tests used to identify that patients are at risk of liver injury are well established but have limitations. Once liver injury has occurred, important prognostic factors are the presence of hepatic encephalopathy, the international normalized ratio, acid–base status and renal function. The only treatment for acute liver failure is transplantation.

Convective heat transfer coefficients for each part of the clothed human body were evaluated under airflow conditions and compared to those of nude body. This was done by measuring clothing surface temperatures on seated and standing manikin using an infrared-imaging radiometer. The convective heat transfer coefficients for the clothed manikin were larger than for the nude manikin. The difference could be 100 to 200% for some individual parts, and for the overall body the difference was 30 to 50%. These results were consistent for both standing and sitting postures, or for facing upwind and facing downstream, although slightly larger differences between clothed and nude could be seen when the manikin was sitting and facing upwind than in the other conditions. Clothing insulation for each part was also estimated. Some differences between standing and sitting were observed at the body part level. However for the whole body the difference was small. Regression models for convective heat transfer coefficients and clothing insulation for all body parts were presented for use in human thermal modeling.

Recently accepted revisions to ASHRAE Standard 55—thermal environmental conditions for human occupancy, include a new adaptive comfort standard (ACS) that allows warmer indoor temperatures for naturally ventilated buildings during summer and in warmer climate zones. The ACS is based on the analysis of 21,000 sets of raw data compiled from field studies in 160 buildings located on four continents in varied climatic zones. This paper summarizes this earlier adaptive comfort research, presents some of its findings for naturally ventilated buildings, and discusses the process of getting the ACS incorporated into Standard 55. We suggest ways the ACS could be used for the design, operation, or evaluation of buildings, and for research applications. We also use GIS mapping techniques to examine the energy-savings potential of the ACS on a regional scale across the US. Finally, we discuss related new directions for researchers and practitioners involved in the design of buildings and their environmental control systems.

The effects of air flow on clothing insulation and on the dry heat transfer coefficients were evaluated for each part of the clothed and nude human body. This was done by measuring clothing surface temperature using an infrared imaging radiometer. The results showed that increasing wind speed causes a decreased in clothing insulation and an increase in the dry heat transfer coefficients. The effects of air penetration on dry heat transfer coefficients could be determined by comparing the heat transfer coefficients of the clothed manikin to those of the nude manikin. Lastly, by comparing clothing insulation results obtained by the conventional indirect method of those of the direct method, in this study, one can demonstrated the limitation of the conventional method and the need for direct estimation.

Current thermal comfort standards and the models underpinning them purport to be equally applicable across all types of building, ventilation, occupancy pattern and climate zone. A recent research project sponsored by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE, RP-884) critically evaluated these assumptions by statistically analysing a large database of research results in building comfort studies from all over the world (n=22,346). The results reported in this paper indicated a clear dependence of indoor comfort temperatures on outdoor air temperatures (instead of outdoor effective temperature ET* used in RP-884), especially in buildings that were free-running or naturally ventilated. These findings encourage significant revisions of ASHRAE’s comfort standard in terms of climatically relevant prescriptions. The paper highlights the potential for reduced cooling energy requirements by designing for natural or hybrid ventilation in many moderate climate zones of the world.
