Although residents are taught the perfusion portion of the rapid cardiopulmonary assessment at our institution, they perform it at the bedside with 8.4% completing 1 part of the assessment and 9.7% verbalizing their findings. Newer technologies, including virtual reality (VR), offer immersive training to close this clinical gap.Objective: To assess senior pediatric residents’ performance of a perfusion exam and verbalization of their perfusion assessment following VR-based Just-in-Time/Just-in-Place (JITP) training compared to video-based JITP training. 245. Framing the 'Others': Examining positive and negative framing effects on attitudes toward immigration in news media and partisan-leaning sources

Abstract

Framing has been increasingly used by political elites as a tactic to manipulate public opinions toward immigration. Motivated by the widespread use of framing, this research intends to study the impacts of framing on public attitudes toward immigrants, public attitudes toward immigration policies, and public willingness to participate in political actions for or against immigration. Using a survey experiment, this research compares the impact of economic threat frames versus cultural threat frames, positive frames versus negative frames, and frames from a neutral source versus frames from a partisan-leaning source. This research contributes to the literature in three ways: First, this paper re-examines the relative effects of widely used immigration frames and factors that have heterogenous effects on the effects of framing. Second, this paper analyzes the subsequent political actions that result from exposure to the frames, complementing previous studies that have primarily focused on how frames alter public attitudes toward specific issues. Third, by comparing a neutral news media to a partisan source, this research discusses framing effects vis-à-vis heuristic effects - the effects in which people use the source's label as a shortcut to evaluate the source's content.

249. Imagining the Real: Towards a New Theory of Drama in Education

Abstract

The current education climate has brought the development of classroom drama as an art form to a standstill. Practitioners need to make a qualitative leap forward in both theory and practice in order to respond to the cultural demands of the times. By linking the best of the ground-breaking work of Dorothy Heathcote and Gavin Bolton with the pioneering developments in theatre form by the playwright Edward Bond, David Davis identifies a possible way forward. In part one he critiques present drama in education -- Mantle of the Expert approaches, conventions drama forms and post-dramatic theatre. In part two he restates and develops the best practice of the last fifty years, centring on the key importance of "living through" drama. In part three he applies the new drama/theatre form of Edward Bond to begin building a new theory of drama in education and so transform classroom practice. "Imagining the Real" will be essential reading for drama students at first and higher degree level, students on initial courses of teacher education, drama teachers, lecturers in higher and further education and theatre workers generally. Following a foreword by Gavin Bolton and an introduction, contents include: (1) The context; (2) Responses and responsibilities; (3) Key dimensions of classroom drama; (4) Towards a theory of "making" drama; (5) A process drama; (6) Towards a new theory of "making" drama; (7) Bondian drama (with Chris Cooper); and (8) Towards new components of classroom drama as art.
