Summary: The Adience-Abience and the Psychopathology Scales of the HABGT were applied under pretreatment and posttreatment conditions to 120 13-15-year-old male delinquents. Comparison with other personality variabes, prediction of recidivism, and analysis of mean scores on the two scales with the means of normal and disturbed children of comparable age were attempted. The delinquent group was more abient than normal children and was significantly higher in psychopthology than either normals or disturbed children. Significant correlations were obtained between Adience-Abience and Psychopathology and recidivism, although neither scale alone, nor both scales in combination, was high enough in prediction to warrant their use for individual predictive purposes. However, their utility in such programs as well as their construct validity were demonstrated.

The consequences of aging of the immune system include impaired T-lymphocyte responsiveness and aberrant immunoglobulin production. Although T cells from elderly individuals have a well-described defect in lymphoblastic transformation in response to some polyclonal mitogens, immunoglobulin abnormalities have lacked a clear in vitro model. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells from 13 young and 13 old healthy donors were cultured with phytohemagglutinin (PHA) or pokeweed mitogen (PWM). Old-donor-cell phytohemagglutinin (PHA), but not PWM, cultures had significantly lower lymphoblastic transformation compared with young donor cultures. IgG, IgA, and IgM production tended to be lower in old- versus young-donor PWM cell cultures. By contrast, despite lower lymphoblastic transformation in old-donor PHA cell cultures, immunoglobulin production was higher for old- versus young-donor cell cultures. No significant age differences were present in initial lymphocyte counts, percent B cells, T cells or monocytes, or helper/suppressor ratios to explain this enhancement in immunoglobulin production. PHA-stimulated mononuclear cell cultures in the aged demonstrate not only a defect in proliferation but also increased immunoglobulin production. This in vitro system may be useful to characterize further the pathogenesis of altered immunoglobulin production in the elderly.

Reliabilities and interrelationships of the Adience-Abience and the Psychopathology Scales of the HABGT were investigated in a population of 120 13-15 year-old mate delinquents over a 40-week period. The delinquent boys were assigned to three conditions: individual tutoring and counseling; group tutoring and counseling; controls (no treatment). Both scales were found to have high test-retest reliability over all conditions (rs ranged from .85 to .93). Interscorer reliability among three scorers was also found to be very high. As expected, treatment had a differential effect on psychopathology and on adience-abience: the former was modifiable while the latter was resistant to change. Also as predicted, the two scales had a significantly higher degree of commonality before treatment intervention than after such intervention, but the relationship remained stable for the control group. Implications for clinical and research use are discussed.

A series of nondestructive and destructive examinations have been performed on a representative sample of stainless steel-clad UO/sub 2/ fuel pins procured in the early-to-mid 1960s for the SPERT program. These examinations were undertaken in order to requalify the SPERT pins for use in converting university research reactors from the use of highly enriched uranium to the use of low-enriched uranium. The requalification program included visual and dimensional inspections of fuel pins and fuel pellets, radiographic inspections of welds, fill gas analyses, and chemical and spectrographic analyses of fuel and cladding materials. In general all attributes tested were within or very close to specified values, although some weld defects not covered by the original specifications were found. 1 ref., 4 figs., 11 tabs.

ABSTRACT A high powered remote work system was recently designed and built for undersea cable system support which represents the next generation of remotely operated vehicle (ROV) which will be required for Subsea Production System and Workover Support. The paper will provide the details of the design, development, and testing program. INTRODUCTION As subsea production system designs have evolved it has become increasingly evident that the magnitude of the tasks which could be performed by remote work systems for the most efficient installation, long term maintenance, and workover support is beyond the capabilities of most of the existing remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) in existence today. Many of the components which may require replacement over the life of a field in a subsea production system (SSPS) are much too large to be readily accommodated by most of the remote work systems presently in use. The approach to compensating for this mismatch between the relative size and power of existing remote work systems and the corresponding SSPS components has resulted in most cases in overly complex, expensive running procedures and SSPS hardware. A high powered remote work system, the Hydratm AT 1850 CRS, was recently produced for undersea cable systems support which represents the next generation of remotely operated vehicles (ROV) which will be required for subsea production system installation, maintenance, and support. In the configuration for support of subsea production facilities the system is called the Hydratm AT SPS. Rated in its nominal design for 1850m operations, the system design can be easily extended to 3000m and beyond. Its large size, heavy thruster based lift capability, electronic expandibility, and work package accommodation features can greatly increase the efficiency of SSPS support operations and reduce the cost and complexity of SSPS facilities. TECHNICAL DESCRIPTION The Hydratm AT SPS design is based on the Hydratm series of remote work systems which include the following:Hydratm 1000Hydratm2500Hydratm AT 1850Hydratm AT 1850 CRS The cornerstones of the design of these systems are redundancy and reliability. Each of the successive designs in this family of systems provided increased capabilities, improved performance, and improved reliability through a series of technical innovations and operator diagnostic aids. The Hydratm AT SPS is a 150 hp electrohydraulic remote work system. It is designed to be launched and retrieved from the worksite in either of two operational modes depending in the application and the design of the SSPS:utilizing a subsea deployment system; orFree-swimming. For SSPS designs where a vessel is moored overhead or for TLP support, the subsea deployment system provides the best option by minimizing the likelihood of the remote work system umbilical becoming entangled with the risers and/ or tendons. The subsea deployment system is equipped with 200m of neutral tether connected to the vehicle to provide ample excursion distance. For SSPS support where lengthy excursions are required and there are no risers or tendons in which to become entangled the free-swimming mode is the preferred option.

Drosophila melanogaster larvae require choline for growth but when fed dl-carnitine in place of choline, carnitine is decarboxylated to β-methylcholine and phosphatidyl-β-methylcholine is synthesized to replace phosphatidylcholine. Feeding (−)-carnitine in place of choline results in a moderate deficiency of lecithin-type phospholipid and a corresponding reduction in growth. The capacity of larvae to employ (+)-carnitine for phosphatidyl-β-methylcholine synthesis and subsequently for growth is very limited. Only 41% as much phosphatidyl-β-methylcholine is synthesized by larvae fed 5.7 X 10−4 M (+)-carnitine as is formed when the same concentration of (−)-carnitine is fed. This suggests that (−)-carnitine is the preferred substrate for carnitine decarboxylase, the enzyme that degrades carnitine to form β-methylcholine. Utilization of carnitine for phospholipid synthesis is clearly dependent upon a choline-deficient state. The presence of small quantities of choline, either in body tissues or in the diet, inhibits the incorporation of carnitine derivatives into phospholipid. Intact carnitine is needed for maximum larval growth and adult activity, indicating that D. melanogaster larvae synthesize a suboptimal quantity of carnitine. Thus, dietary carnitine supplements in vivo carnitine synthesis for physiological purposes.
