(1) Background: Musculoskeletal disorders of the upper limbs are a common medical condition among dental hygienists and dentists, making them a common occupational risk for dental professionals. The purpose of the work was to collect information about the dental professions and their habits to highlight what can be good practices to be carried out to prevent any musculoskeletal disorders. (2) Methods: To identify habits and problems inherent in the professional activity of dental hygienists and dentists, a questionnaire was formulated on the use of enlarging systems. (3) Results: The questionnaire was completed by 241 dental professionals. As for the use of magnifiers, 72.6% of participants use them: among dental hygienists, 67.8% use magnifiers, among dentists, 80.9% use magnifiers; there is a statistically significant difference. There is no statistically significant difference between professions regarding muscle disorders. (4) Conclusions: For a clearer assessment, it would be appropriate to submit the questionnaire to a wider sample of professionals, to define better the correlation between musculoskeletal disorders, work activity and the type of enlarging systems used.

Elderly and senile patients are an integral part of society and need qualified dental care. The formation of attitudes towards elderly patients is also a key component of the development of professional education and practical skills of medical students. The purpose of the study is to assess the willingness of dental students and doctors to provide qualified care to elderly patients. Materials and methods. With the help of the developed questionnaire, a sociological study was conducted among students of the dental institute and dentists. The respondents were asked to answer questions about the desire to develop in the field of gerontostomatology, about the main dental diseases of senile and elderly people, about the possibility of using modern methods of therapeutic and orthopedic treatment in the process of dental rehabilitation of such patients and about barriers that may arise in the process of providing care to age-related patients. Participation in the study was voluntary and informed consent was obtained. Statistical processing was carried out. Results. 136 students and 120 practicing dentists took part in the sociological survey. According to the results of the survey, respondents focus more on young and mature patients in their practical activities. Few are willing to work with age-related patients. Most are not ready to develop their knowledge and skills in the field of gerontostomatology. Among the most common problems in the oral cavity of elderly and senile patients, respondents noted: lack of teeth, lack of modern prostheses, high prevalence of non-carious lesions and periodontal diseases. The survey identified barriers to effective treatment in this category of patients: the presence of concomitant pathology that contributes to the development of complications, financial insolvency of patients, anatomical and physiological prerequisites that prevent rapid and high-quality dental care. Conclusion. The process of dental rehabilitation of elderly and senile patients is complicated due to their psychological and physiological characteristics, among which somatic pathology occupies an important place. But despite all the difficulties, given the worldwide trend of aging of the population, dentists should have the skills to treat this category of patients. When teaching students, it is necessary to pay attention to the development of the communication skills of future doctors, when forming sections of disciplines, it is necessary to include questions concerning the specifics of providing dental care to patients over 60 years of age.

Abstract Background In recent years, the proportion of elderly people in the total patient population has been increasing owing to the rapid aging of Japanese society. However, little is known about the age-specific healthcare communication challenges within the field of dentistry. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the relationship between dentists’ explanations and patient-dentist communication among elderly patients. Methods The study included 146 dentist-elderly patient pairs from Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan. A questionnaire was administered to pairs of dentists and patients. The survey was conducted between June 2021 and April 2022. We examined the relationships among the survey items: dentist demographics, patient demographics and sufficiency of the dentist explanations, and patient-dentist communication. The logistic regression analysis was conducted to examine the patient’s mode of visiting the dentist as the objective variable, sufficiency of the dentist explanations, patient-dentist communication, dentist, and patient factors as explanatory variables. Results About 30% of patients felt that explanations of “Comparison with other treatment methods,” “Treatment period,” and “Treatment prognosis” were not sufficient. Among these items, a significantly higher percentage of respondents found the dentist’s explanations sufficient when they were treated by more than one dentist. Many good communication factors were significantly associated with the dentist being younger and having a preventive practice. Multivariate analysis revealed a significant association between sufficiency of the dentist explanations and patients’ regular dental visits. Conclusion Adequate explanations by dentists for elderly patients were significantly associated with the dentist factor. Improving the quantity and quality of the dentists’ explanations of treatment may improve patient satisfaction and promote regular dental visits.

Dental practitioners, as part of their work, are exposed to a variety of hazards. This highlights the ongoing need for attention to occupational health in the dental field. A cross-sectional study was organised to investigate the range, prevalence, and associated factors for occupational health problems related to dental practice among Cambodian dentists. Participants underwent a face-to-face interview to explore dentists work-related health problems; 106 Cambodian dentists participated in this study, of which 68.9% were male. Ages ranged from 29 to 71 years, averaging 36.1 years, with the majority (77.4%) in the 29–40 age group. They had 5 to 18 years of practice experience, and worked an average of 52.2 h per week. Commonly reported health issues included back pain (88.7%), headaches (81.1%), shoulder pain (78.3%), arm/hand pain (57.5%), and eye problems (48.1%). Additionally, 38.7% of participants felt stressed and 19.8% depressed. Some reported suicidal thoughts and taking medication for depression. Despite these challenges, 91.5% enjoyed practicing dentistry. These findings highlight the need for interventions and strategies to address the physical and mental well-being of Cambodian dentists. By addressing these issues, steps can be taken to enhance the working conditions and professional satisfaction of dental professionals, ultimately benefiting both the practitioners and their patients.

Introduction: The availability of evidence-based information sources for dentists is essential to influence antibiotic prescribing practices and we need to understand how dentists interact with such sources and how this influences their practice. The present study aimed to evaluate dentists' preferred sources of information and their awareness of available information and initiatives on prudent antibiotic prescribing practices in Jordan., Methodology: An online cross-sectional questionnaire was administered to dentists between July to September 2021. It was an adapted version of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) survey for antibiotic use and resistance., Results: A total of 204 dentists responded to the survey. The main sources of information regarding avoiding unnecessary antibiotic prescribing were published guidelines (35.5%), the dental professional body (20.0%), colleagues or peers (18.6%), and scientific organizations (17.2%), with the influence of these sources on changing prescribers' views being 40.7%, 9.8%, 10.3%, and 14.2%, respectively. Of the surveyed dentists, 9.3%, 33.8%, and 56.9% were aware, unaware, and unsure of the presence of national action plans on antimicrobial resistance, respectively. Background: Dentists in the United States frequently prescribe opioids for dental-related pain, although evidence shows superior efficacy of nonopioids for pain management. A national sample of US dentists was interviewed to understand the barriers and facilitators to opioid prescribing., Methods: Semistructured one-on-one telephone interviews were conducted with dentists sampled from the 6 regions of The National Dental Practice-Based Research Network. Responses were coded into the domains of the Capability, Opportunity and Motivation Model of Behavior. Potential behavior change interventions were identified for targeted themes., Results: Seventy-three interviews were qualitatively analyzed. Most of those interviewed were general dentists (86.3%) and on average (SD) were in practice for 24.3 (13.0) years. Ten themes were identified within the Capability, Opportunity and Motivation Model of Behavior. Dentists' knowledge of opioid risk, ability to identify substance use disorder behavior, and capability of communicating pain management plans to patients or following clinic policies or state and federal regulations were linked with judicious opioid prescribing. Dentists reported prescribing opioids if they determined clinical necessity or feared negative consequences for refusing to prescribe opioids., Conclusions: Dentists' opioid decision making is influenced by a range of real-world practice experiences and patient and clinic factors. Crowding is a common problem in mixed dentition due to tooth replacement, lack of space, parafunctional habits, among others. The aim of study was to compare the knowledge and practices between orthodontists, pediatric dentists and general dentists regarding the treatment of dental crowding in mixed dentition. A virtual survey was used in a sample of 416 professionals divided into 207 general dentists, 77 pediatric dentists and 132 orthodontists. An electronic instrument with 21 questions was sent, consisting of an inventory and a questionnaire with adequate validity and reliability characteristics. The Chi Square test was used with a confidence level of 95%. Regarding the level of knowledge, significant differences were found between orthodontists, pediatric dentists and general dentists (p=0.002); with a higher percentage of high knowledge in pediatric dentists. In the opinion of the three groups of professionals about their practices, there were no differences regarding the best time to start treatment (p=0.108), aspect considered to start treatment (p=0.889), treatment frequently used for crowding (p=0.712), technique used to perform dental stripping (p=0.087) and the type of appliance most effective to treat crowding (p=0.151). It is concluded that there was a significantly higher level of knowledge about the treatment of dental crowding in pediatric dentists, followed by orthodontists and general dentists. Abstract Background Retention of doctors is a global challenge and doctors working in different departments may face different problems. The study aimed to explore the turnover behavior and intention and correlated factors among Chinese dentists and medical doctors in other clinical fields. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted online in 5 regions of China from March 12th to April 12th, 2020. The questionnaire included 3 parts, socio-demographic characteristics, turnover behavior and intention, and concerns about work-related factors. Chi-square test and/or Wilcoxon Mann-Whitney test were applied for comparison, and binary logistic regression was used for finding the factors. Results A total of 2428 eligible questionnaire were received, comprising 1954 responses from dentists and 474 from medical doctors. Rates of turnover behavior among dentists and medical doctors were 2.87% and 6.96%, respectively. Similarly, rates of turnover intention were 51.79% among dentists and 71.20% among medical doctors. Educational level was negatively correlated with turnover behavior of both medical doctors and dentists, and concern about salary was a unique negatively correlated factor for dentists. Age was negatively correlated with turnover intention in both medical doctors and dentists. Conversely, concerns about workload and doctor-patient relationship were positively correlated with turnover intention in both groups. Concern about salary was the distinct correlated factor of medical doctors’ turnover intention, while gender and annual household income were correlated with turnover intention among dentists. Conclusions Low turnover rate but high turnover intention rate was the current status of Chinese doctors’ employment. Turnover behavior and intention were more optimistic among dentists than medical doctors. Factors related to turnover behavior and turnover intention were not identical among dentists and medical doctors. Therefore, personalized retention measures were necessary for dentists and medical doctors.

Apart from being a mean of making a living and achieving a certain social status, professions may also be considered a calling. The dentist's career is not only a vocation of high social prestige but also one which requires a high level of responsibility, physical and psychological load. Professional satisfaction reflects how meaningful a person finds their vocation, but this is based on the resources that the individual has invested (time for education and skill development, financial resources, effort, etc.). Hence, professional and financial satisfactions constitute complex and multifaceted phenomena. The aim of the study is to analyze the degree of professional and financial satisfaction in dentists as well as to give suggestions suitable for its improvement.

Abstract No study has examined the simultaneous effect of facial forms, midline deviations and midline angulations on facial beauty. Therefore, this comprehensive study aimed to evaluate these and many other hypotheses. This psychometric study was performed on 15,042 observations. A female frontal photograph was edited to 45 perceptometric images with controlled anatomical alteration: 3 facial forms (euryprosopic [brachyfacial], mesoprosopic [mesofacial], leptoprosopic [dolichofacial]), each having either 9 bidirectional midline deviations (0, 1, 2, 3, and 4 mm deviated to the left and right) or 7 bidirectional midline angular deviations (0°, 5°, 10°, and 15° deviated to the left and right). One of the photographs were repeated. These 46 images were esthetically judged by 327 participants (243 laypeople, 49 orthodontists, and 35 ‘prosthodontists or restorative dentists’). Hierarchical mixed-model multiple linear regressions and post hoc tests were adopted to evaluate the simultaneous impacts of the photomodel’s facial forms, midline deviations to the right or left, and midline rolls to the right or left plus sex, age, experience, and dental specialty of the referees on their perception of facial beauty as well as the tolerable zones of midline alterations. These were also done separately for each specialty group, and also for each facial face. Ideal combinations of anatomic features were determined using repeated-measures ANOVAs. Differences between esthetic preferences of different groups in terms of each image were assessed using one-way ANOVAs and t-tests (α = 0.05, α = 0.008, α = 0.001). All 5 anatomical features significantly and independently influenced perception of facial beauty. The tolerance threshold for midline deviations was 1 mm deviations to the right and left sides. For midline rolls, the only tolerable form was the no-roll (‘on’) midline; the judges preferred right-oriented defects over left-sided ones. The most beautiful facial form was mesoprosopic, followed by leptoprosopic. Men perceived the female face slightly more attractive than did women. The viewers’ specialty (or lack of it), their age, or their experience did not affect their esthetic preferences. Predictors of esthetic preferences were all 5 anatomical features plus views’ sex, but not their dental specialty, age, or experience. Zones of acceptability and also the ideal range of anatomical features were determined.

Dental caries and periodontal disease are typical oral diseases frequently observed in patients with renal diseases. Tooth loss is an outcome of dental caries and periodontal disease, and the number of existing teeth is an indicator of oral health status. However, the association between the number of existing teeth and end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) has not been investigated in detail. This study aimed to investigate the association between oral health status, expressed by the number of existing teeth, and ESKD. We analyzed data from the second survey of the Longitudinal Evaluation of Multi-phasic, Odontological, and Nutritional Associations in Dentists, a cohort study conducted among members of the Japan Dental Association. From August 2016 to July 2017, self-administered questionnaires were mailed to 16,128 male dentists and 8,722 responded. Among them, 7,479 men with complete data on age, number of existing teeth, and ESKD were included in the analysis. Multivariate logistic regression analysis was conducted, with ESKD as the dependent variable and the number of existing teeth (≥23 teeth and <23 teeth) as the independent variable. Subgroup analysis by age (<65 years and ≥65 years) was also conducted. The <23 teeth group had a significantly higher rate of ESKD than did the ≥23 teeth group. After adjusting for age, body mass index, smoking habits, hypertension, and diabetes mellitus, there was no significant association between having <23 teeth and ESKD in all participants. However, the subgroup analysis revealed a significant association after adjustment for covariates in participants aged <65 years but not in those aged ≥65 years. In conclusion, having <23 teeth was associated with the risk of requiring maintenance dialysis therapy among Japanese men aged <65 years. Conscious sedation is widely considered one of the techniques most commonly used to manage anxiety in both children and adults during dental procedures. The application of procedural sedation exhibits considerable variation globally. The purpose of the study was to determine the prevalence of conscious sedation in the current situation in the dental healthcare sector in Egypt and to identify the factors influencing it. An online cross-sectional analytical survey, consisting of nine multiple choice questions, was distributed through the contact lists of national dentists and social media platforms. 163 respondents completed the survey. Regarding the use of conscious sedation, only 25 (15.3%),95% confidence interval (10-21) utilized it. The percentage of participants who used conscious sedation was higher among dentists practicing pediatric dental specialists (n = 19, 76%). Academic qualification correlates significantly with the practice of conscious sedation (P = 0.002), but this was not reflected in multiple logistic regression. Indeed, while conscious sedation is part of the dental study curriculum in Egypt, its application rate is relatively low compared to other countries. This discrepancy could be attributed to a variety of factors, including resource availability, lack of training, reflecting the need to develop strategies to improve the implementation of conscious sedation in Egyptian dental practices., (© 2024. Objectives: With increasing life expectancy and improved preventive measures, teeth are retained longer, leading to a rise in prevalence of root caries lesions (RCL). However, little is known about how dentists manage this condition. The present survey aimed to evaluate the knowledge of Swiss dentists on decision making and management of RCL., Method: The survey evaluated dentists' knowledge, clinical routines, and demographics concerning RCL. Dentists were contacted via email and local newsletters, and 383 dentists from 25 (out of 26) cantons responded. Mann-Whitney U test, χ 2 test, intraclass correlation coefficients, Spearman correlation and Chi Square were used., Results: The dentists had a mean(SD) working experience of 22.5(12) years. Most dentists correctly classified an inactive (67%) and an active (81%)RCL. Although the inactive lesion did not call for restorative treatments, 61% of the dentist declared they would restore it. From the active lesion,83% would restore it. The invasive treatments leaned toward complete caries excavation with composite resin as preferred restorative material. There were significant correlations between material choice and expected success rates. Among the non-invasive options, oral hygiene instructions and (highly-)fluoridated toothpaste were favored. Most dentists declared having a recall system for such patients, with biannual follow-ups preferred. The dentists' place of education significantly influenced restorative decisions (p < 0.001), while participants' age (≥60years) impacted activity status (p = 0.048) and restorative decisions (p = 0.02)., Conclusion: Material preferences for non-invasive or invasive management varied greatly and there were minimal differences in the management of inactive or an active RCL. Moreover, diagnosing active lesions appeared easier than diagnosing inactive ones., Clinical Significance: Despite diverse material preferences for (non-)invasive treatments, a strong positive correlation existed between the chosen restorative material and its expected 2-year success rate. Brazil's public healthcare system (SUS) offers specialized oral health services to Brazilians, but the productivity of specialists, such as Pediatric Dentists, has not been characterized. Therefore, the objective of this study was to characterize the outpatient dental procedures (ODPs) carried out by Pediatric Dentists within the SUS. An epidemiological study with an ecological, longitudinal, retrospective, and quantitative approach was conducted. The ODPs carried out by Pediatric Dentists within the SUS were characterized based on type of procedure, complexity level, and circumstance (urgent or elective). Data were analyzed using a descriptive and analytical approach, considering a significance level of 5%, as well as the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic (the 2020-2022 years were not included in secondary analyses). In the last 15 years, 29,234,972 ODPs were carried out by Pediatric Dentists within the SUS. Clinical procedures were the majority (55.4%), significantly more frequent than all other types of procedures (all p <0.05). Among these, restorative and periodontal procedures were the most common (30.7% and 21.0%, respectively). From 2008 to 2019, excluding COVID-19 pandemic years, the trend over the last 15 years was constant for all types of procedures (all p >0.05). In addition, low complexity ODPs were the majority (90.1%), significantly more frequent than medium (9.7%) and high complexity procedures (0.1%) (both p <0.05). At last, most ODPs were not characterized by circumstance in the outpatient production reports (96.9%). Therefore, it was possible to conclude that Pediatric Dentists carried out diverse ODPs within the SUS over the past 15 years, although there was a dominant pattern of type and complexity.

Introduction: Evidence on smokeless tobacco (ST) cessation interventions is scarce. The South Asian (SA) region that shares more than 90% of the burden of ST use is grossly underrepresented in research on ST cessation. This study aimed to assess the feasibility of delivering and investigating a behavioral support intervention for ST cessation in dental settings in Pakistan., Methods: A multicenter, pilot, two-armed parallel-group, individually randomized control trial, with a 1:1 allocation ratio, was conducted at two dental hospitals. Eligibility criteria included being an ST user seeking dental treatment and not currently accessing cessation support. All participants were provided written self-help ST cessation material. The intervention group also received a dentist-delivered, bespoke behavioral support intervention for ST cessation developed for users of SA origin. Participants were followed up telephonically at 3 and 6 months. Self-reported 6-month abstinence was verified by salivary cotinine. Analysis was descriptive, with 95% confidence intervals presented where appropriate., Results: One hundred participants were successfully recruited from the selected hospitals. Of these, 78% continued to engage throughout the study duration and provided primary outcome data, whereas 63% completed all hospital visits. The outcome measures were successfully collected. Biochemically verified 6-month abstinence in the intervention and control groups was 10% and 4%., Conclusions: It was feasible to deliver and evaluate a dentist-delivered behavioral support intervention for ST cessation in Pakistan. The data suggested that the intervention may improve ST quit rates. The findings of this study will be useful in informing the design of future definitive studies., Implications: To our knowledge, this is the first pragmatic pilot trial on ST cessation in dental settings in Pakistan and the first trial on dentist-delivered structured behavioral support intervention for ST cessation. It adds to the scarce, trial evidence based on ST cessation interventions. The findings suggest behavioral support intervention for ST cessation may improve quit rates. The trial was conducted in a country with poor ST control measures, where ST products are not taxed, the products are sold openly to and by minors, and the users are offered negligible cessation support. The findings may, therefore, be generalizable to low-middle-income countries, particularly SA countries, with similar policy backgrounds., (© The Author(s) 2023. With the growing understanding of the relationship between oral and systemic diseases there is an increasing interest in integrating dental providers more completely into the health care delivery system. Technology advancements in traditional dental disease diagnosis and management as well as in salivary diagnostics for systemic disease provide great opportunities for the profession but numerous challenges for dental educators who are impacted by the intersection of numerous, sometimes competing interests. While economic factors play a significant role in curricular innovation and change, in the United States the accrediting process for dental education programs can be an equally vexing challenge. The profession of dentistry comes with numerous challenges and responsibilities. Dental burnout is a form of professional exhaustion that affects many practitioners in the field of dentistry. The aim of our study was to assess the prevalence of stress, emotional exhaustion, and feelings of burnout among dentists in Iasi County. Background: This study aims to investigate the perceptions of dentists and dental hygienists regarding quality dental job conditions and to identify differences in perceptions based on job type. Methods: As a result of conducting face-to-face and online surveys, data from a total of 132 people were analyzed. In order to investigate the perception of quality job conditions, the importance of a total of 13 items was investigated, and the work policies and job satisfaction of the current workplace were examined. Since the data did not follow a normal distribution, a non-parametric test, the Mann–Whitney U test, was performed. Results: Both dentists and dental hygienists perceived income and working hours to be of priority importance for quality job conditions. Dental hygienists valued holiday support and welfare, human relations, and personal development potential more than dentists (p＜0.05). Looking at differences by job type, dental hygienists rated all conditions as more important than dentists except income, indicating a statistically significant difference (p＜0.05). In terms of the work policies, 96.2% of the practices in the study were required to have the four types of social security contributions, but fewer had flexible working hours (19.7%), healthcare support (23.5%), and incentives (25.0%). Of the participants, 60.6% had parental leave available at their workplace, and dental hygienists had statistically significantly higher job satisfaction when parental leave was available (2.57 points) than when it was not (p＜0.05). Conclusion: Quality dental jobs are an important factor in keeping workers happy and maintaining an efficient practice. Dental practice owners need to pay attention to the quality of jobs required by the dental workforce, provide flexible working hours and welfare programs such as parental leave, and create a workplace atmosphere and human resource management system that supports the use of these programs.

Introduction: Treatment of head and neck cancers, it can have adverse effects on patients' oral health status. The aim of this study was to assess the level of knowledge and practice of general dentists in Yazd City in the field of oral care in patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Methods: In this descriptive cross-sectional study, 134 general dentists were selected by systematic random sampling and their awareness and practice level were assessed using by using a researcher-made questionnaire with valid and reliable questionnaire (r=0.81). Data were analyzed using SPSS software version 25, t-test and ANOVA tests. Results: The mean score of knowledge score was 11.44 ±2.03 out of18 and mean of practice score was11.9 ±3.41 out OF 20. The mean score of knowledge was not significantly associated with age, work experience and practice score were not significantly associated with gender, age and work experience, but the mean score of knowledge in women was significantly higher than men (P=0.01). Moreover, dentists worked in both clinic and Personal office showed significantly higher awareness (P=0.001). The average practice score of dentists in personal office was significantly higher than other options (P=0.03). Conclusion: Dentists of Yazd had moderate knowledge and performance level in the field of oral and dental care in patients undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy. It seems that the need to hold programs with this theme in the sessions of continuing education and holding training and educational webinar to improve the level of awareness and clinical practice to provide desirable services to these patients should be considered.

Abstract Objective There is growing evidence supporting the presence of oral manifestations associated with COVID-19. The study investigates the knowledge of dental undergraduates and recently graduated dentists concerning oral presentations related to COVID-19. Methods A cross-sectional descriptive study in Saudi Arabia comprised 305 individuals, including undergraduate dental students, interns, and freshly graduated dentists. Data were collected using a questionnaire disseminated to approximately 500 subjects via WhatsApp groups and other applications. The questionnaire was tested in a pilot study for validity, edited, and validated by 2 supervisors at the College of Dentistry, Qassim University, Buraydah, Saudi Arabia. The questionnaire consisted of questions regarding sociodemographic attributes, the level of expertise of dental practitioners, and their knowledge and perspectives regarding COVID-19 and the implementation of oral lesions interrelated to it. The data was subjected to analysis through the utilization of descriptive statistics and chi-square tests, employing the statistical software SPSS (version 24). Results About 43.9% of subjects stated that COVID-19 causes oral symptoms. Respondents most frequently reported COVID-19-related dry mouth. Oral ulcers, Candida infection, Hyperpigmentation, tongue coating, atrophy, Petechiae, Herpes, white lesions, Gingivitis, and Periodontitis are further symptoms. COVID-19’s oral manifestation was unknown to 41.0% of subjects, and 37.7% of respondents lacked knowledge regarding the most impacted locations of oral manifestations. Oral signs and COVID-19 symptoms are debated and significantly associated with higher educational levels. Conclusion The dental students and freshly graduated dentists in this study have proper knowledge of COVID-19 and its symptoms. Also, most dental students and newly graduated dentists recognize the potential correlation between COVID-19 and oral manifestations with an average to excellent knowledge of the types and sites commonly affected. The level of awareness was associated with higher educational levels.

Objectives: Dentists prescribe 10% of all outpatient antibiotics in the United States and are the top specialty prescriber. Data on current antibiotic prescribing trends are scarce. Therefore, we evaluated trends in antibiotic prescribing rates by dentists, and we further assessed whether these trends differed by agent, specialty, and by patient characteristics., Design: Retrospective study of dental antibiotic prescribing included data from the IQVIA Longitudinal Prescription Data set from January 1, 2012 to December 31, 2019., Methods: The change in the dentist prescribing rate and mean days' supply were evaluated using linear regression models., Results: Dentists wrote >216 million antibiotic prescriptions between 2012 and 2019. The annual dental antibiotic prescribing rate remained steady over time ( P = .5915). However, the dental prescribing rate (antibiotic prescriptions per 1,000 dentists) increased in the Northeast (by 1,313 antibiotics per 1,000 dentists per year), among oral and maxillofacial surgeons (n = 13,054), prosthodontists (n = 2,381), endodontists (n = 2,255), periodontists (n = 1,961), and for amoxicillin (n = 2,562; P < .04 for all). The mean days' supply significantly decreased over the study period by 0.023 days per 1,000 dentists per year ( P < .001)., Conclusions: From 2012 to 2019, dental prescribing rates for antibiotics remained unchanged, despite decreases in antibiotic prescribing nationally and changes in guidelines during the study period. However, mean days' supply decreased over time. Dental specialties, such as oral and maxillofacial surgeons, had the highest prescribing rate with increases over time. Antibiotic stewardship efforts to improve unnecessary prescribing by dentists and targeting dental specialists may decrease overall antibiotic prescribing rates by dentists.

Background: Poor oral and pharyngeal cancer (OPC) survival among Black men is partially due to their limited knowledge about OPCs, which is exacerbated by dentists' limited training and discomfort in discussing OPC risk factors. The purpose of this study was to assess the attitudes and experiences that Black men have communicating with dentists about OPCs., Methods: To qualitatively assess these attitudes and experiences, a focus group guide and recruitment strategy were developed using a community engagement approach. Data were analyzed using grounded theory., Results: Twenty-three self-identified Black men participated in three focus groups through the Zoom platform (mean age of 46.1 years). Four main themes emerged, which identified that participants: (1) had little knowledge of OPCs; (2) felt that addressing OPC risk among Black men was not a priority for dentists; (3) stressed the importance of dentists acknowledging the complexity of how race and gender affects Black men's healthcare experiences; and (4) expressed a benefit to receiving information from multiple social networks., Conclusion: The focus groups provided context for how dentists might engage with Black men in discussions about OPC prevention and treatment.

Objectives: Assess knowledge, attitudes and practices of paediatric dentists towards dentomaxillofacial imaging and correlate findings with practitioner and practice-specific characteristics., Methods: An online questionnaire was sent to all paediatric dentists who attended a scientific seminar organized by the European Academy of Paediatric Dentistry (EAPD) regarding dental radiology. Data regarding available equipment, number, type and reason for performing radiographs, frequency and reasoning for retakes were collected. Data analysis was performed according to practitioner- and practice-specific characteristics and factors directly associated with the type and frequency of radiographs taken, and reason and frequency of repeats were determined. Significant differences were tested using Chi-square and Fisher's exact test. Statistical significance was set at p < 0.05., Results: More than half of the participants (58%) reported having digital radiographic equipment and almost 1/4 (23%) conventional. A panoramic equipment was available in 39% working places and a CBCT scanner in 41%. Two thirds of the participants reported taking up to 10 intra-oral radiographs per week, mainly for trauma (75%) and caries diagnosis (47%). Extra-oral radiographs were prescribed to monitor development (75%) and for orthodontic evaluation, (63%) with a frequency of less than 5 weekly (45%). Participants reported that they repeat radiographs in a frequency of < 5 per week (70%) mainly due to patient's movement (55%)., Conclusions: The majority of paediatric dentists within Europe use digital imaging equipment for both intra- and extra-oral radiographs. Nevertheless, great variation in practices exists and, therefore, continuous education in oral imaging is crucial to maintain high quality standards for the radiographic examination of patients., (© 2023. Objectives: The objective of this study was to describe the knowledge, opinions and practices about the defective restoration (DR) management of French general dental practitioners (GDPs)., Methods: A cross-sectional, online survey-based study was carried out amongst 378 GDPs - members of the dental practice-based research network in France (ReCOL). Bivariate comparisons were made using Fisher's exact test to assess the association of the respondent characteristics (age, gender…) with the decision to repair DRs, and responses to clinical cases., Results: The response rate was 82.9%. 50.4% of the respondents declared they at least sometimes consider DRs repair in their clinical practice instead of DRs total replacement. For the 89.8% who at least rarely repaired DRs, the main characteristic determining the therapeutic strategy was the defect size (71%, mainly inclined to repair small defects), followed by the defect type (marginal defect or crack for more than 60% of the respondents) and the material of initial restoration (composite for 63.5%). When shown clinical photographs illustrating DRs, most of respondents proposed a replacement with inlay/onlay or crown., Conclusions: This study indicates that a significant proportion of French GDPs do not make sufficient use of DR repair on a routine basis. A lack of knowledge of the concept seems to explain at least part of this situation. Collective and individual efforts from the profession are still needed to promote DR repair and therefore more often apply MinimalIntervention Dentistry., Clinical Significance: This survey shows that MID is not yet sufficiently used in routine practice in France regarding DR management. Background: In the absence of a full spectrum of evidence-based guidelines for the appropriate use of antimicrobial agents, dentists, including periodontists, remain a highly frequent antibiotic prescribing group. With the goal of understanding antibiotic prescribing practices, the authors surveyed a convenience sample of dental practitioners and periodontists to identify differences between the 2 cohorts and assess the factors that affect prescribing practices., Methods: An institutional review board-approved 15-item survey was developed to capture antibiotic prescribing practices addressing the main research question, factors affecting systemic antibiotic prescription patterns, and prescription timing. The authors collaborated with the American Dental Association (ADA) and the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) for survey dissemination. Responses were summarized using descriptive statistics. Multivariable models were developed to identify antibiotic prescription predictors., Results: Overall, 32.4% of the participants prescribed systemic antibiotics with scaling and root planing. When comparing the 2 groups, the authors found that 46.4% and 18.7% of the AAP and ADA members, respectively, prescribed systemic antibiotics with scaling and root planing (P = .0001). The authors found a significant difference between the AAP and ADA groups in prescription timing (P = .01). The multivariable model revealed that practitioner sex (P = .03), AAP membership (P = .0001), and years of practitioner experience (P = .04) predicted antibiotic prescription practices. Objective: The population in many countries is becoming more diverse. The number of people from foreign backgrounds is growing in Finland as well. The aim of this study was to better understand how the foreign background of a patient affects the dentist's work., Methods: The research was carried out as a semi-structured interview. Six dentists from Helsinki municipality public dental care were interviewed between December 2019 and January 2020. After the interviews were transcribed verbatim, two members of the research group read individually the interviews to find emerging themes., Results: The most common problems that arose in the interviews were problems within communication and interpretation. Periodontal diseases and the importance of self-care in treating them were observed to be unfamiliar to many foreign-background patients. The dentists also noticed different expressions of pain among foreign-background patients compared with native Finnish patients. The interviewed dentists thought that the length of time a patient had lived in Finland affected the experienced difficulties and the prejudice that the patients and dentists faced., Conclusion: In this qualitative research, we were able to identify some of the common difficulties that the dentists experience while treating patients from foreign backgrounds, despite the small number of participants.

Our survey investigated dentists' perceptions of their activity during the COVID-19 pandemic. We used a ten-question survey on our conception and sent it to 122 dentists via social media; 70 responded. The Cronbach's Alpha coefficient validated our questionnaire. We applied the Shapiro-Wilk test and the Mann-Whitney test. The chosen p-significance threshold was 0.05. The respondents were 61.50% women and 38.50% men; 44.29% were between 23 -30 years old. 44.29% of the respondents were dentists with 1 to 5 years of practice. Of 70 dentists, 51.43% felt stress, 35.71% felt fear, 7.15% anxiety, and 5.71% physical fatigue during the pandemic. 65% of males and 35% of females used some drugs. 80.80% of respondents had no financial problems, 19.20% reported some troubles. Gloves, masks, and glasses were the principal ways of protection, followed by nebulizers (98%) and UV lamps (52%). 68 declared they had the support of their friends and family, 65 were relaxed by TV programs, 52 by doing sports, and 47 by listening to music. 53% of dentists had COVID-19: 30.58% female and 22.42% male; 96.24% of them managed to treat the infection at home [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: To address the following research questions: (i) What is the current situation and future vision on oral healthcare service in nursing homes (NHs) in Singapore? (ii) What are the enablers to achieve the future vision? (iii) How do views differ between dentists with and without clinical experiences in NHs?, Background: Oral healthcare services in NHs need to reflect the perspectives of a diverse range of stakeholders and establish shared goals, however there is scarce evidence of in-depth dentists' insights., Material and Methods: Dentists were purposively recruited. Focus group discussions with 4-5 participants each were conducted via teleconferencing. Data were analysed thematically., Results: The participants (n = 19, median 36.0 years) recognised the need of comprehensive reform of the oral healthcare paradigm in NHs: symptomatic care to preventive care, disease-oriented care to person-centred care and more active collaborative care. Overall, five domains of enabling factors emerged: (1) to improve general system of oral healthcare in NHs, (2) to increase the number of dentists engaging in NHs, (3) to improve the quality of dental practice, (4) to improve the quality of daily oral care and (5) to promote seniors' cooperative attitude to oral healthcare. There was a noticeable difference in the perception on how to encourage dentists to serve in NHs., Conclusion: There is a need for a comprehensive reform of the oral healthcare paradigm for seniors in NHs in Singapore. Purpose: Fearful dental patients often cite various dental instruments or procedures as triggers for their dental fear. Thus, visual dental stimuli provoke anxiety. This preliminary study aimed to assess the level of aversion to visual stimuli in dental patients and compare it with that in dentists. Patients and Methods: A total of 43 dental patients (25 women, 18 men; average age, 29.9 ± 13.3 years; patient group) and 13 dentists (4 women, 9 men; average age, 28.2 ± 2.0 years; dentist group) were included. All participants had previously undergone dental treatment. The dental fear level was assessed using the self-reported Dental Fear Survey (DFS). Thirty-two images associated with dental treatment were prepared and classified into three categories: dental instruments, dental procedures, and the dental environment. All participants rated their level of disgust toward each image on a visual analog scale with scores ranging from 0 to 100. Results: In the patient group, the disgust ratings for tooth extraction, dental drilling, and local anesthesia were > 60, which were significantly different from those in the dentist group (Mann–Whitney U-test, p< 0.001, p=0.001, and p=0.001, respectively). The ranking order of the disgust ratings for the 32 images showed significant correlation between the patient and dentist groups (Spearman correlation coefficient, r=0.80, p< 0.001). In the patient group, the disgust ratings for dental impressions and the interdental brush, dental light, and dental chair were significantly correlated with DFS scores (r=0.61, p< 0.001; r=0.47, p=0.001; r=0.41, p=0.006; and r=0.40, p=0.008, respectively). Conclusion: This study revealed that patients have more negative feelings toward invasive procedures than dentists. However, a significant correlation was identified between the ranking of aversion-provoking dental stimuli by patients and dentists. Background: Today, one of the most important factors threatening everyone is stress. Objectives: Considering the problems caused by stress in people’s careers and the fact that dentistry has been introduced as a stressful profession, the purpose of this research was to investigate the relationship between occupational stress and demographic variables among dentists in Khorramabad, Iran, in 2022. Methods: The current research is a cross-sectional analytical study. Of the 120 working dentists, 92 were enrolled in the study according to the inclusion criteria. Of these, 28.3% were women and 71.7% were men. The data collection instrument was Osipow’s Occupational Stress Inventory. The researcher completed the questionnaires by referring to dentists’ offices. All statistical tests were performed using SPSS version 25, with P < 0.05 as the significance level. Results: The findings showed that the average occupational stress in dentists was 184.01 ± 9.88, showing that 89.1% of dentists had moderate to severe stress and 10.9% had severe stress. The average occupational stress was 180.42 ± 6.35 in women and 185.42 ± 10.68 in men. Thus, the level of occupational stress in men was significantly higher than that of women (P = 0.007). In addition, 2 variables (age and workplace) had a significant relationship with the level of occupational stress of dentists (P < 0.05). Conclusions: Since most dentists participating in this study had moderate to severe stress, knowing the sources of stress and ways to deal with them can help reduce fatigue and increase job performance among dentists. Silver diamine fluoride (SDF) is a topical solution used for managing dental caries. The mixed-methods study consists of a quantitative study (questionnaire survey) and a qualitative study (in-depth interview) to explore the knowledge, attitudes, and practices towards SDF among dentists in Vietnam. A descriptive approach and a thematic approach were performed to analyze data, respectively. The questionnaire survey invited 436 licensed dentists registered for the national annual dental meeting and 226 dentists participated (response rate: 52%). Among them, 174 (77%, 174/226) dentists knew SDF, and 69 (40%, 69/174) dentists used SDF for caries management. Most of them considered SDF therapy as non-invasive (84%, 146/174) and simple (80%, 140/174). However, most of them expressed concern that SDF could discolor the tooth (74%, 128/174). Their most preferred teeth for SDF therapy were primary posterior teeth (92%, 160/174). The in-depth interview consulted 16 dentists to reach data saturation. They learned about SDF from outside curriculum resources as an effective anti-caries agent. They understood the advantages (simple, non-invasive, timesaving) and disadvantages (tooth discoloring, ammonia odor) of SDF. They used SDF to arrest caries in uncooperative children in the clinic and people living in rural areas in outreach services. Most dentists in Vietnam are supportive of SDF therapy, and they know its advantages and disadvantages for caries management. Introduction: People with impaired mobility face difficulty accessing dental care. One solution is portable dentistry, which includes delivering dental care in homes or residential institutions. Dentists, however, appear reluctant to offer such services. Our objective was to understand how dentists perceived portable dentistry and potential challenges to its implementation., Methods: We conducted a qualitative descriptive study based on semi-structured interviews with a sample of dentists in Quebec, Canada. We employed a combination of maximum variation and snowball sampling strategies to recruit 14 participants. The interviews were conducted and audio-recorded through Zoom and lasted approximately 40 minutes. After transcribing them, we performed a thematic analysis with a combination of inductive and deductive coding., Results: Despite perceiving portable dentistry as a valuable practice model, participants showed little interest in adopting this approach, arguing it was not every dentist's "job" to provide portable services. They believed portable dentistry must be financially burdensome and difficult to integrate into their daily work due to lack of time and portable equipment. Accordingly, participants considered it was the duty of governments, professional organisations overseeing dentistry education and practice, and dental schools to develop portable dentistry programs and hire dentists to deliver such services., Conclusions: To promote portable dentistry, it may be necessary to improve the knowledge and competencies of dentists, but also to challenge their professional identity as well as the current model of dental clinics as the standard of care delivery. Objectives: Maintaining the oral health of dependent older adults is challenging, with limited access to dental care and limited focus on preventive oral health programmes. This study aimed to evaluate the attitudes of General Dental Practitioners (GDPs), working in Switzerland, to caring for dependent older adults with a focus on the use of silver diamine fluoride (SDF) as a caries preventive agent and more widely on the provision of domiciliary dental care (DDC)., Methods: Seventeen GDPs working in Switzerland were interviewed. Each interview was semi-structured by a topic guide, digitally recorded, and transcribed. The transcribed data were analysed using a thematic analysis., Results: Three major themes to the widespread use of SDF in this population were identified: lack of basic knowledge including indications for use; aesthetic concerns and product availability. Those who had knowledge about the product believed that using it in the treatment of frail older adults had advantages, especially in the preservation and/or prolongation of the life of teeth without invasive treatments. The biggest barrier was its availability. The GDPs identified three major barriers related to DDC provision: lack of infrastructure, poor financial rewards and safety concerns (patient and operator safety). Those who provided this service stated that they were doing it because of self-motivation, kindness, or as a role in community service., Conclusions: The potential use of SDF was viewed positively by the majority of the GDPs interviewed but confusion exists over its availability in Switzerland, and other barriers were identified to more widespread use in this patient group.
