Abstract: This review focuses on niobium and tantalum organometallic complexes that feature a metal-bound alkyne (RC≡CR) unit. The contrasting MIII–alkyne/MV–“alkenediyl” bonding motifs used to describe the metal–ligand interaction in these complexes are discussed. An overview of the spectroscopic and crystallographic structural metrics that are used to characterize alkyne complexes is also included. The various routes employed for the synthesis of tantalum and niobium alkyne complexes are summarized, and the reactivity of these complexes, including potential synthetic applications, is also addressed.

Abstract: In the EarthCARE mission the BBR (Broad Band Radiometer) has the role of measuring the net earth radiance (i.e. total reflected-solar and thermally-emitted radiances), from the same earth scene as viewed by the other instruments (aerosol lidar, cloud radar and spectral imager). It does this measurement at 10km scene size and in 3 view angles. It is an imaging radiometer in that it uses micro-bolometer linear-array detector (pushbroom orientation), to over-sample these required scenes, with the samples being binned on-ground to produce the 10km radiance data. For the measurements of total earth radiance, the BBR is based on the heritage of Earth Radiation Budget (ERB) instruments. The ground calibration methods of this type of sensor is technically very similar to other EO instruments that measure in the thermalIR, but with added challenges: (1) The thermal-IR measurement has to have a much wider spectral range than normal thermal-IR channels to cover the whole earth-emission spectrum i.e. ~4 to >50microns; (2) The 2nd channel (reflected solar radiance) must also have a broad response to cover almost the whole solar spectrum, i.e. ~0.3 to 4microns. And this solar channel must be measured on the same radiometric calibration as the thermal channel, which in practice is best done by using the same radiometer for both channels. The radiometer is designed to be very broad-band i.e. 0.3 to 50microns (i.e. more than two decades), to cover both ranges, and a switchable spectral filter (short-pass cutoff at 4μm) is used to separate the channels. The on-ground measurements which are required to link the calibration of these channels will be described. A calibration of absolute responsivity in each of the two bands is needed; in the thermal-IR channel this is by the normal method of using a calibrated blackbody test source, and in the solar channel it is by means of a narrow-band (laser) and a reference radiometer (from NPL). A calibration of relative spectral response is also needed, across this wide range, for the purpose of linking the two channels, and for converting the narrow-band solar channel measurement to broad-band.

Abstract: We present simultaneous two-dimensional velocity and scalar measurements on a central vertical plane in an axisymmetric pure turbulent plume. We use an edge-detection algorithm to determine the edge of the plume, and compare the data obtained in both a fixed Eulerian frame and a frame relative to local coordinates defined in terms of the instantaneous plume edge. In an Eulerian frame we observe that the time-averaged distributions of vertical and horizontal velocity are self-similar, the vertical velocity being well represented by a Gaussian distribution. We condition these measurements on whether fluid is inside or outside of the plume, and whether fluid inside is mixed plume fluid or engulfed ambient fluid. We find that, on average, 5 % of the total vertical volume transport occurs outside the plume and this figure rises to nearly 14 % at heights between large-scale coherent structures. We show that the fluxes of engulfed fluid within the plume envelope are slightly larger than the vertical transport outside the plume – indicating that ambient fluid is engulfed into the plume envelope before being nibbled across the turbulent/non-turbulent interface (TNTI) and then ultimately irreversibly mixed. Our new measurements in the plume coordinate (following the meandering fluctuating plume) show the flow within the plume and in the nearby ambient fluid is strongly influenced by whether an eddy is present locally within the plume, or absent. When an eddy is present and the plume is wide, the vertical velocities near the plume edge are small and hence all vertical transport is inside the plume. In regions where the plume is narrow and there is no eddy, large vertical velocities and hence transport are observed outside the plume suggesting that pressure forces associated with the eddies accelerate ambient fluid which is then engulfed into the plume. Finally, we show that observing significant vertical velocities beyond the scalar edge of the plume does not suggest that the characteristic width of the velocity distribution is greater than that of the scalar field; on the contrary, we show our observations to be consistent with a buoyancy distribution that is up to 20 % wider than that of the velocity. Measurements in the plume coordinates show that the mixing of momentum across the plume results in a distribution for which the differential entropy is close to maximal and the mixing of momentum is uninhibited (i.e. not bounded) by the TNTI of the plume. Furthermore, our measurements suggest that the scalar mixing across the plume may also result in a distribution for which the differential entropy is close to maximal but, in contrast to the momentum, the scalar mixing is strictly bounded by the plume edge.

208. New Measurement of the Direct 3α Decay from the ^{12}C Hoyle State

Abstract: Excited states in certain atomic nuclei possess an unusual structure, where the dominant degrees of freedom are those of α clusters rather than individual nucleons. It has been proposed that the diffuse 3α system of the ^{12}C Hoyle state may behave like a Bose-Einstein condensate, where the α clusters maintain their bosonic identities. By measuring the decay of the Hoyle state into three α particles, we obtained an upper limit for the rare direct 3α decay branch of 0.047%. This value is now at a level comparable with theoretical predictions and could be a sensitive probe of the structure of this state.

Abstract: Alexithymia is a clinically relevant personality construct characterized by difficulties identifying and describing feelings, externally oriented thinking, and impoverished imaginal processes. Previous taxometric investigations provided evidence that alexithymia is best conceptualized as a continuous dimension rather than a discrete type, at least when assessed with the self-report 20-Item Toronto Alexithymia Scale. The aim of the current study was to test the categorical versus dimensional structure of alexithymia using the recently developed Toronto Structured Interview for Alexithymia. Three nonredundant taxometric procedures (MAXCOV, MAMBAC, and L-Mode) were performed on the Toronto Structured Interview for Alexithymia subscale scores from a multinational sample of 842 adults. All taxometric procedures produced unambiguously dimensional solutions, providing further evidence that the core alexithymia features are continuously distributed in the population. Discussion focuses on the theoretical, assessment, and clinical implications of these findings for the alexithymia construct.

AI can provide improvements on the ways climate zones are derived and managed.This paper reports on analysis of aggregate household electricity consumption (EC) data from local utilities in Los Angeles,seeking possible improvements in energy management. In this analysis we noticed that EC data permits identificationof interesting geographical zones — regions having EC patterns that are characteristically different from surrounding regions.We believe these zones could be useful in a variety of urban models.

Abstract: Heat stress has been reported to reduce uncoupling proteins (UCP) expression, which in turn should improve mitochondrial efficiency. Such an improvement in efficiency may translate to the systemic level as greater exercise economy. However, neither the heat‐induced improvement in mitochondrial efficiency (due to decrease in UCP), nor its potential to improve economy has been studied. Determine: (i) if heat stress in vitro lowers UCP3 thereby improving mitochondrial efficiency in C2C12 myocytes; (ii) whether heat acclimation (HA) in vivo improves exercise economy in trained individuals; and (iii) the potential improved economy during exercise at altitude. In vitro, myocytes were heat stressed for 24 h (40°C), followed by measurements of UCP3, mitochondrial uncoupling, and efficiency. In vivo, eight trained males completed: (i) pre‐HA testing; (ii) 10 days of HA (40°C, 20% RH); and (iii) post‐HA testing. Pre‐ and posttesting consisted of maximal exercise test and submaximal exercise at two intensities to assess exercise economy at 1600 m (Albuquerque, NM) and 4350 m. Abstract: Measurements are presented of W gamma gamma and Z gamma gamma production in proton-proton collisions. Fiducial cross sections are reported based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.4 fb(-1) collected with the CMS detector at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV. Signal is identified through the W -> lv and Z -> ll decay modes, where l is a muon or an electron. The production of W gamma gamma and Z gamma gamma, measured with significances of 2.6 and 5.9 standard deviations, respectively, is consistent with standard model predictions. In addition, limits on anomalous quartic gauge couplings in W gamma gamma production are determined in the context of a dimension-8 effective field theory.

Abstract: A search is conducted for new physics in a final state containing a photon and missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV. The data collected by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC correspond to an integrated luminosity of 12.9 fb(-1). No deviations are observed relative to the predictions of the standard model. The results are interpreted as exclusion limits on the dark matter production cross sections and parameters in models containing extra spatial dimensions. Improved limits are set with respect to previous searches using the monophoton final state. In particular, the limits on the extra dimension model parameters are the most stringent to date in this channel.

Abstract: A search for charged Higgs bosons produced via vector boson fusion and decaying into W and Z bosons using proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV is presented. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 15.2 fb(-1) collected with the CMS detector in 2015 and 2016. The event selection requires three leptons (electrons or muons), two jets with large pseudorapidity separation and high dijet mass, and missing transverse momentum. The observation agrees with the standard model prediction. Limits on the vector boson fusion production cross section times branching fraction for new charged physical states are reported as a function of mass from 200 to 2000 GeV and interpreted in the context of Higgs triplet models.

Abstract: We develop node embeddings, a distributed representation of nodes, for large-scale social network applications. We compute embeddings for nodes based on their attributes and links. We show that node embeddings can effectively reflect community structure in networks and thus, be useful for a wide range of community related applications. We consider node embeddings in two different community related mining tasks.First, we propose a generic integration of node embeddings for network processing in community detection algorithms. Our strategy aims to re-adjust input networks by adding and trimming links, using embedding-based node distances. We empirically show that the strategy can remove up to 32.16% links from the DBLP (computer science literature) citation network, yet improve performance for different algorithms by different evaluation metrics for community detections.Second, we show that these embeddings can support many community-based mining tasks in social networks—including analyses of community homogeneity, distance, and detection of community connectors (inter-community outliers, actors who connect communities)—thanks to the convenient yet efficient computation provided by node embeddings for structural comparisons. Our experimental results include many interesting insights about DBLP. For example, prior to 2013 the best way for research in Natural Language & Speech to gain “best-paper” recognition was to emphasize aspects related to Machine Learning & Pattern Recognition.

Abstract: The incorporation of o-phenylene-linked diamidophosphine ligands onto the readily available alkyne complexes Ta(alkyne)Cl3(DME) (where alkyne = hex-3-yne or 1,2-bis(trimethylsilylacetylene); DME = 1,2-dimethoxyethane) results in the formation of a versatile set of starting materials of the general formula [PhNPN*]Ta(alkyne)Cl (where [PhNPN*] = PhP(2-(N-mesityl)-5-Me-C6H3)2). Upon reaction with KBEt3H, the synthesis of the corresponding hydride complexes [PhNPN*]Ta(alkyne)H can be achieved; these complexes feature extremely downfield (δ ∼21 ppm) doublet resonances (2JHP = ∼35 Hz) in the respective 1H NMR spectra that are assigned to the newly formed Ta–H moieties. Subsequent reaction of these Ta hydrides with 2,6-dimethylphenylisocyanide and phenylacetylene results in the insertion of these species into the Ta–H bond and the formation of the corresponding iminoformyl and phenylvinyl complexes, respectively. While the former intermediate cannot be detected, the latter was characterized by NMR spectroscopy. ...

Abstract: Positron emission particle tracking (PEPT) is a technique by which particle behaviour can be measured in a system of flow. The quality of the measurement is related to the spatial and temporal precision of the PET scanner and the characteristics of the tracer, which must replicate physical and chemical properties of the system bulk. Tracer particles can be made from ion exchange resins which have a high capacity for the commonly used positron emitting radionuclides 18F or 68Ga. However, these resins have a polymer composition and are naturally hydrophilic, which limits their application in systems involving mineral particles. This work presents a method to modify ion exchange resins with a coating to change the physical properties of the tracer. Two types of tracer were fabricated in this way, with hydrophobic and hydrophilic surfaces, to investigate the behaviour of valuable and gangue minerals in froth flotation with PEPT. The PEPT data were used to determine the spatial occupancies of each tracer, showing that the hydrophobic tracer has the highest occupancy in the froth region and the hydrophilic tracer is rarely entrained.

Abstract: The present study examined the association between trait emotional intelligence (TEI) and ADHD symptomatology in samples of 1388 adolescents (ages 14–17 years) and 3313 young adults (ages 18–24 years). Consistent with the notion that difficulties in emotion processing and affect regulation are important features of ADHD, TEI was found to be a moderate to strong predictor in both samples. The TEI dimensions of stress management and adaptability uniquely predicted both hyperactivity–impulsive and inattentive symptomatology for both samples. Implications are discussed in terms of the usefulness of the TEI framework for enhancing understanding of the socio-emotional difficulties associated with ADHD symptoms and for informing interventions and coping strategies.

Abstract: Study on translational and rotational motion of solids is important in a wide range of engineering processes. However, rotational motion of solid particles in an opaque system has not been given much attention due to the lack of appropriate measurement methods. This paper presents a new technique, Multiple-Positron Emission Particle Tracking (Multiple-PEPT), to track both rotational and translational motions of a solid simultaneously. The sample study presented here is to track the rotation and translation of a cubed potato in a food can for optimising the canned food process. The results have demonstrated that the rotational and transitional motion of the cubed potato can be simultaneously tracked through mounting three small (200 microns) radioactive tracers on the cube corners. The rotation and translation of the cube can be reconstructed based on the trajectories of the three tracers. The translational and rotational motions of the potato particle are related to each other, and both the motions are greatly dependent on the solids fraction, the liquid viscosity and the density difference between the solid and liquid; but follow specific patterns. Abstract: The identity of the presumed phytoplasmal pathogen associated with cranberry false-blossom disease has never been fully clarified. In the present study a molecular-based procedure was employed to determine the identity of the phytoplasma. Tissues of cranberry plants exhibiting cranberry false-blossom symptoms were collected from multiple bogs on each of three randomly selected commercial cranberry farms in New Jersey. Leafhoppers, including the known vector Limotettix vaccinii (Van Duzee) (=Scleroracus vaccinii, Euscellis striatulus) and the sharp-nosed leafhopper Scaphytopius magdalensis (Provancher), a known vector of blueberry stunt disease, were collected from two different farms in New Jersey. Nested PCR assays and RFLP analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences were employed for the detection and identification of the associated phytoplasmas. All of 20 cranberry plants sampled and five out of 14 batches of leafhoppers tested positive for phytoplasma. Virtual RFLP and sequence analyses revealed that all the associated phytoplasmas were members or variants of a new subgroup, 16SrIII-Y. Phylogenetic analysis of 16S rRNA sequences indicated that cranberry false-blossom phytoplasma strains represented a lineage distinct from other 16SrIII subgroups. This is the first report confirming that a new phytoplasma (designated as a new subgroup 16SrIII-Y) is associated with cranberry false-blossom disease and associated with both leafhopper species in New Jersey.

Abstract: The present study examined pragmatic language and executive functions (EF) as predictors of peer victimization in three groups: high-functioning adolescent boys with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) (n = 30); typically developing adolescent boys (n = 40); and adolescent boys (n = 22) without ASD with special education needs (SN). Controlling for age and bullying others, regression analyses revealed EF as measured by the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Functioning (Gioia et al., 2000) to be a significant predictor across all types of peer victimization (physical, social, and verbal) regardless of group membership. It is concluded that EF may play a pivotal role in explaining why some SN adolescents with and without ASD are at-risk for peer victimization.

Abstract: Radiography and tomography using proton beams promise benefit to image guidance and treatment planning for proton therapy. A novel proton tracking detector is described and experimental demonstrations at a therapy facility are reported. A new type of proton CT reconstructing relative "scattering power" rather than "stopping power" is also demonstrated. Notably, this new type of imaging does not require the measurement of the residual energies of the protons.A large area, silicon microstrip tracker with high spatial and temporal resolution has been developed by the Proton Radiotherapy Verification and Dosimetry Applications consortium and commissioned using beams of protons at iThemba LABS, Medical Radiation Department, South Africa. The tracker comprises twelve planes of silicon developed using technology from high energy physics with each plane having an active area of ∼10 × 10 cm segmented into 2048 microstrips. The tracker is organized into four separate units each containing three detectors at 60° to one another creating an x-u-v coordinate system. Pairs of tracking units are used to reconstruct vertices for protons entering and exiting a phantom containing tissue equivalent inserts. By measuring the position and direction of each proton before and after the phantom, the nonlinear path for each proton through an object can be reconstructed.Experimental results are reported for tracking the path of protons with initial energies of 125 and 191 MeV. A spherical phantom of 75 mm diameter was imaged by positioning it between the entrance and exit detectors of the tracker. Positions and directions of individual protons were used to create angular distributions and 2D fluence maps of the beam. These results were acquired for 36 equally spaced projections spanning 180°, allowing, for the first time, an experimental CT image based upon the relative scattering power of protons to be reconstructed.Successful tracking of protons through a thick target (phantom) has demonstrated that the tracker discussed in this paper can provide the precise directional information needed to perform proton radiography and tomography. When synchronized with a range telescope, this could enable the reconstruction of proton CT images of stopping power. Furthermore, by measuring the deflection of many protons through a phantom, it was demonstrated that it is possible to reconstruct a new kind of CT image (scattering power) based upon this tracking information alone.

Abstract: This paper describes the results of a mixed methods approach to investigate the impact of peer social situations on teen drivers. Research has demonstrated that peer passengers have a detrimental effect on teen drivers, leading to a substantial increase in crash rates when teens are driving with passengers versus driving alone. Specific aspects of the driver and passenger, such as gender, may lead to increased or decreased crash risks. However, these data are often inconsistent, suggesting that additional variables are involved. We posit that teens lack the necessary experience managing complex social skills to adequately handle a peer passenger while driving. Further, evidence from interviews and surveys of teen drivers suggests that this may help to account for the dramatic increase in crash risk observed when a teen drives with multiple peer passengers.

Abstract: The study examined the relationship between emotional intelligence (EI) and several addiction-related behaviours (gambling problems, Internet abuse, and computer gaming misuse) in two adolescent samples: 270 clinical outpatients (180 males and 90 females) and 256 special needs students (160 males and 96 females). Gambling problems, Internet abuse, and computer gaming misuse were positively inter-correlated in both samples; approximately half of the variability in these addiction-related behaviours could be accounted for by a common dysfunctional preoccupation latent variable. Latent variable path analysis found emotional intelligence to be a moderate predictor of dysfunctional preoccupation in both adolescent samples.

Abstract: Being victimized by one's peers is a major problem in adolescence, and research has suggested that individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) may experience higher rates of bullying than their typically-developing (TD) peers. However, it is currently unclear whether adolescents with ASD are victimized more by their peers simply because they are ‘different’. This study was designed to examine percentage rates across different types of bullying behaviour in adolescents with an ASD (n = 24), in comparison to a group of special-needs adolescents without an ASD (n = 22), and a group of typically developing peers (n = 24), to determine whether simply being ‘different’ leads to higher rates of victimization. We also examined the agreement between parental and self-reports of bullying behaviour experienced by these groups. Overall, more adolescents with ASD reported victimization than adolescents in the other two groups. In addition, those with ASD reported more social bullying in comparison to the other two groups and more physical bullying than the TD group. No difference was found between parental and self-reports for the bullying experienced by the adolescents with ASD or special needs; however, TD adolescents reported higher levels of victimization than their parents reported for them. Contributing factors for the victimization experienced by adolescents with an ASD are discussed.

Abstract: The obsessive-compulsive behaviors central to Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) are not uncommon in Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), however the association between these disorders is not yet clear. One construct which may be useful in delineating their overlapping characteristics is “Incompleteness” or a sense of things feeling “not just right”. Incompleteness has been related to a constellation of symptoms in OCD, but its association with ASD has not yet been examined. In this study parents with two or more children with ASD (P-MC) ( n =115) were compared to an independent sample of parents having a single child with an ASD (P-SC), matched by age and gender, on level of Incompleteness. Results indicate that P-MC parents scored significantly higher in Incompleteness than P-SC parents. Incompleteness scores were also associated with a profile of behaviors in their children with ASD ( n =357) characterized by high scores on the empirically derived repetitive sensory motor actions and resistance to change domains of the Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised ( Cuccaro et al., 2003 ). We discuss the implications of Incompleteness found in parents of children with an ASD, as well as its utility as a possible endophenotype for both ASD and OCD.

Abstract: A nested PCR assay was employed to detect the presence of phytoplasmas in 127 blueberry plants exhibiting typical or a portion of blueberry stunt (BBS) syndrome collected in 2010 and 2011, from 11 commercial farms predominantly located in two counties in New Jersey, USA. Ninety plants exhibiting typical stunt syndrome tested positive for phytoplasma infection. Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) analysis indicated that two distinct phytoplasmas were associated with BBS-diseased plants. About 95% of phytoplasmas detected were very closely related to BBS phytoplasma strains BBS3-AR (subgroup 16SrI-E) and BBS1-MI (unidentified) identified previously, and 4.4% of phytoplasmas detected belonged to the pigeon pea witches'-broom phytoplasma group (16SrIX). Sequence and phylogenetic analysis of cloned 16S rDNA further indicated the subgroup 16SrI-E related phytoplasmas represented a variant of 16SrI-E reference strain BBS3-AR, while the 16SrIX related phytoplasmas were closely related to juniper witches'-broom (JunWB) phytoplasma (16SrIX-E), representing a 16SrIX-E variant. Ribosomal protein (rp) and secY gene-based phylogenies revealed that BBS3-AR and BBS-NJ 16SrI-E strains belonged to a closely related lineage, while BBS-NJ 16SrIX-E strains and JunWB strains represented two distinct lineages. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) analyses of rp and secY gene sequences further revealed that no specific rp gene SNPs and only two specific secY gene SNPS were present between BBS-NJ 16SrI-E strains and BBS3-AR. In contrast, BBS-NJ 16SrIX-E strains/clones had 15 consensus rp SNPs and 28 consensus secY SNPs that separated them from JunWB strains/clones. For the first time, two distinct phytoplasmas that cause BBS-disease in the U.S. was revealed.

Abstract: We assess the most probable causes of late twentieth century (1960-1994) tropospheric temperature changes. Optimal detection techniques are used to compare observed spatio-temporal patterns of near-surface and tropospheric temperature change with results from experiments performed with two different versions of the Hadley Centre climate model. We detect anthropogenic forcings, particularly well-mixed greenhouse-gases, with a less certain sulfate aerosol cooling influence. More limited evidence exists for a detectable volcanic influence. Our principal results do not depend upon the choice of model. Both models, but particularly HadCM3, appear to overestimate the simulated climate response to greenhouse gases (especially at the surface) and volcanoes. This result may arise, at least in part, due to errors in the forcings (especially sulfate) and technical details of our approach, which differs from previous studies. We use corrected and uncorrected versions of the radiosonde record to assess sensitivity of our detection results to observational uncertainties. We find that previous corrections applied to the radiosonde temperature record are likely to have been sub-optimal in only taking into account temporal consistency. However, the choice of corrected or uncorrected version has no systematic effect upon our main conclusions. We show that both models are potentially internally consistent explanations of observed tropospheric temperatures.

Abstract: We describe a technique for adding contextual distinctions to word embeddings by extending the usual embedding process — into two phases. The first phase resembles existing methods, but also constructs K classifications of concepts. The second phase uses these classifications in developing refined K embeddings for words, namely word K-embeddings. The technique is iterative, scalable, and can be combined with other methods (including Word2Vec) in achieving still more expressive representations. Experimental results show consistently large performance gains on a Semantic-Syntactic Word Relationship test set for different K settings. For example, an overall gain of 20% is recorded at K = 5. In addition, we demonstrate that an iterative process can further tune the embeddings and gain an extra 1% (K = 10 in 3 iterations) on the same benchmark. The examples also show that polysemous concepts are meaningfully embedded in our K different conceptual embeddings for words.

Abstract: This study explored the utility of trait emotional intelligence (EI) for predicting students’ university graduation outcomes six years after enrolment in university. At the start of the program, 1,015 newly registered students completed a brief multidimensional self-report EI assessment and provided consent to track their subsequent degree progress via official university records. Using latent profile analysis (LPA), participants were sorted into five classes that differed in the overall EI level and in the relative strengths and weaknesses on individual EI dimensions. Greater likelihood of degree noncompletion at the 6-year follow-up was uniquely associated with having a low-EI profile with particularly pronounced weaknesses in the interpersonal and stress management domains, after controlling for high school grades and gender. Comparative levels of predictive utility could not be achieved by examining scores on each EI dimension independently. Authors discuss practical advantages of LPA over traditional variable-centered approaches for identifying and assisting students at risk for degree noncompletion.

Abstract: This paper presents the three-dimensional finite element analysis of squat RC walls using a continuum constitutive model for concrete developed at ANATECH. The concrete model is based on the smeared-cracking concept and an elastic-plastic formulation that permits the simulation of cracking and other particular response characteristics of concrete. The laws governing the normal and tangential stresses on a crack are suitable for the simulation of shear failures and crack closing and reopening under load reversals. Finite element models have been developed to reproduce experiments on squat walls found in the literature. These tests were conducted on walls with rectangular and non-rectangular sections subjected to cyclic lateral loading. The finite element models provide a good representation of the nonlinear response and shear failure of these walls. Results of a blind simulation of a five-story shear wall building tested on a shake-table, in which a diagonal shear failure was well predicted, are also presented.

Abstract: Schölte waves, waves bound to the interface between a fluid and an elastic half-space, are, for many material combinations, evanescent; as they propagate, they are damped due to radiation. A representation of the general evanescent Schölte wave is here obtained in terms of a solution to the membrane equation with complex speed, linked, at each instant, to a complex-valued harmonic function in a half-space. This derivation generalises one obtained recently for (non-evanescent) Rayleigh, Stoneley and Schölte waves. An alternative description is also obtained, in which the time-evolution of the normal displacement of the interface satisfies a first-order, complex-valued, non-local evolution equation. Amongst some explicit solutions obtained are decaying solutions allied to a general solution to the Helmholtz equation, and a solution closely related to a Gaussian beam. In the plane–strain case, the general Schölte wave splits into two disturbances, one right-travelling and one left-travelling, each being described at all times in terms of a harmonic function in a half-plane, decaying with depth yet having arbitrary boundary values. This representation highlights the dual elliptic–hyperbolic nature typical of guided waves and gives a surprisingly compact representation for the two-dimensional case.

Abstract: Cognitive impairments are central to schizophrenia and could mark underlying biological dysfunction but efforts to detect genetic associations for schizophrenia or cognitive phenotypes have been disappointing. Phenomics strategies emphasizing simultaneous study of multiple phenotypes across biological scales might help, particularly if the high heritabilities of schizophrenia and cognitive impairments are due to large numbers of genetic variants with small effect. Convergent evidence is reviewed, and a new collaborative knowledgebase - CogGene - is introduced to share data about genetic associations with cognitive phenotypes, and enable users to meta-analyze results interactively. CogGene data demonstrate the need for larger studies with broader representation of cognitive phenotypes. Given that meta-analyses will probably be necessary to detect the small association signals linking the genome and cognitive phenotypes, CogGene or similar applications will be needed to enable collaborative knowledge aggregation and specify true effects.

Abstract: The objectives of the current study were to determine the fate and contribution to Met kinetics of 2-hydroxy-4-(methylthio)butanoate (HMTBA) at the whole-body, splanchnic, and mammary levels. Four multicatheterized cows (31.3 kg of milk/d; 17.7 kg of DMI/d) were used in a crossover design, with two 1-wk periods, to determine the metabolic fate of HMTBA and its effect on Met metabolism. Over the last 2 d of each period, cows were infused, via a jugular vein, with saline or HMTBA (Alimet, Novus International Inc., St. Louis, Mo) at the rate of 36 g/d. During the last 8h, the HMTBA infusion was substituted by equimolar [1-(13)C]HMTBA (8.79 mmol/h) and l[methyl-(2)H(3)]Met (1.31 mmol/h) was infused in all cows. During the last 5h, hourly samples (n=6) were collected to determine plasma flows plus the isotopic enrichments (IE) and concentrations of HMTBA ((13)C) and Met (both (13)C and (2)H(3)) in plasma from an artery plus portal, hepatic, and mammary veins. The IE of [(13)C] and [(2)H(3)]Met were also determined in milk protein taken over the last 1h of infusion in HMTBA-infused cows. The infused HMTBA increased whole-body plasma flux of Met by 6.5 mmol/h (from 17.9 to 24.4 mmol/h). Based on enrichments of (13)C-labeled Met, 3.8 mmol/h of Met flow through plasma was derived directly from HMTBA. These 2 estimates accounted for between 43 to 74% of the HMTBA dose infused, contributing to increased whole-body Met availability. Although the portal-drained viscera, liver, and mammary gland (MG) extracted 11, 37, and 3.4%, respectively, of the infused HMTBA, tissue net Met fluxes were either unchanged (portal-drained viscera, MG) or even reduced (liver: -7.9 vs. -2.4±0.6 mmol/h). Therefore, net postsplanchnic supply of Met decreased from 7.0 to 2.9 mmol/h between control and HMTBA-infused cows, compared with needs for milk protein secretion of 7.6 and 8.1 mmol/h, respectively. The HMTBA provided directly 15% of the Met required for milk protein secretion, with 0.2 mmol/h synthesized within the MG, whereas 1.1 mmol/h originated from Met produced in other tissues and transported to the MG through blood circulation. Most of the remainder needed by the MG arose from unlabeled Met released from protein breakdown in extra-splanchnic tissues and that was not reused to support intracellular protein synthesis, as this function was performed by Met synthesized from HMTBA in situ. Absorbed HMTBA, therefore, both produces and spares Met for use by the MG.

Abstract: Scientists have investigated methods for reducing odor emissions from livestock buildings for decades, yet few technologies have proven effective. Vegetative environmental buffers (VEB), which are specially designed combinations of trees, shrubs, and grasses, have shown promise in recent years for reducing odors at poultry operations, but they have seen less testing at swine farms. A field research project was conducted at two similar 8-barn swine finisher sites in Missouri to assess the effectiveness of VEBs in combination with fan deflectors for reducing downwind odor impacts from tunnel-ventilated swine barns. A VEB and fan plume deflectors were installed in spring 2009 at one 8-barn site, while the other site, with neither VEB nor fan plume deflectors, served as the control. Odor was monitored from July to November 2009, with trained human panelists at eight locations, upwind and downwind of the VEB, barns, and lagoons. Five aromatic volatile organic compounds (VOCs: phenol, 4-methylphenol, 4-ethylphenol, indole, skatole) were sampled from ambient air using sorbent tubes and gas chromatography/mass spectrometry. Compared to the control site, the VEB reduced odor concentrations (dilutions to threshold, D/T) by 49.1% in the VEB and by 66.3% at distance 15 m downwind of the VEB (p < 0.001). There was a larger percentage of non-detect odor concentrations (D/T < 2) at 15 m downwind for the VEB site (57.6%) as compared to the control site (16.4%). Mean upwind odor concentrations ranged from 1.4 to 2.4 D/T. Mean odor concentrations at the 150 m downwind location were not significantly different for the control (mean DT = 3.0) and the VEB site (mean DT = 3.5) (p = 0.42). Mean odor concentrations at 300 m downwind were not significantly different for the control (mean DT = 2.3) and the VEB site (mean DT = 2.5) (p = 0.47). In late 2010, a laboratory wind tunnel was used to compare VOC flux from VEB vegetation samples before and after rinsing. Wind tunnel VOC fluxes from vegetation were 78% to 98% lower after rinsing, qualitatively showing that particulate matter (PM) captured on the vegetation reduces VOC emissions. The results of these field and laboratory experiments confirm that VEBs reduce downwind odor within 30 m of the barn or 15 m from the VEB by increasing dilution and capturing odorous PM in the vegetation.

Abstract: Although several brief instruments are available for the emotional intelligence (EI) construct, their conceptual coverage tends to be quite limited. One notable exception is the short form of the Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i:S), which measures multiple EI dimensions in addition to a global EI index. Despite the unique advantage offered by the inventory, psychometric properties of the EQ-i:S scores have not yet been systematically evaluated. Such an evaluation was the main goal of the present investigation. Using data from 2,508 undergraduates, the authors conducted 2 studies involving factor structure, internal reliability, 6-month temporal stability, and construct validity of the EQ-i:S responses, both for the total EQ scale and for each constituent dimension. The results supported the multidimensional measurement structure of the EQ-i:S, with each dimension producing internally consistent, temporally stable, and theoretically meaningful responses. Scores on the EQ-i:S were associated more strongly with performance on an ability test of EI and with a conceptually similar construct of alexithymia than with the broader dimensions of basic personality and explained nontrivial amounts of incremental variance in the criterion symptoms of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder. Moreover, scores on each EQ-i:S dimension exhibited unique patterns of associations with the validation variables. The discussion highlights the advantages of the multidimensional approach in the assessment and study of EI.

244. Impact of solid sizes on flow structure and particle motions in bubbling fluidization

Abstract: Knowledge of solid motions and flow structures in fluidized beds is of significant importance to a number of industrial processes, such as combustion, gasification of solid fuels, drying of particulate materials, oxidation or reduction of ores, and catalytic and thermal cracking. Many parameters, such as pressure drop, bed geometry, solid size and density, can affect the solid flow structure in a fluidized bed. In this study, experiments were designed to investigate the impact of solid size. Through PEPT studies, we found that the solid flow structure and the bubble pattern in a fluidized bed with an inner diameter of 150 mm vary significantly with solid particle size. Three flow structures have been found. For glass beads with a large size (> 700 μm), a single large circulation cell is observed within the whole bed, and particles move upwards at one side of the bed to the splash zone, and then return to the bed bottom along the opposite side of the bed. When the particle size is in the range 250–450 μm, particles move upwards across the whole area of the bed at relatively uniform velocity in a layer 30 mm deep immediately above the air distributor. Above this layer, solids move inwards and travel upwards in the centre of the bed to the splash zone, and then return to the bottom of the bed in an outer annulus. When the particle size is in the range 80–200 μm, the fluidized bed can be divided into three sections. In the bottom section, solids travel upwards in the outer annulus, and move down in the bed centre. In the top section, solids travel upwards at the centre of the bed to the splash zone and then return to the intermediate height of the bed via the outer annulus. In the intermediate section of the bed (60–100 mm above the distributor), the annular upward solid flow from the bottom section encounters the annular downward flow from the top section. The two solid flows merge and change direction towards the bed centre where the particles are mixed and redistributed to the circulation cells in the upper and lower sections. The bubbling pattern also varies with the particle size. The bubble size and their rising velocity decrease with decreasing of the particle size.

Abstract: The secY gene sequence is more variable than that of the 16S rRNA gene. Comparative phylogenetic analyses with 16S rRNA and secY gene sequences from 80 and 83 phytoplasma strains, respectively, were performed to assess the efficacy of these sequences for delineating phytoplasma strains within each 16Sr group. The phylogenetic interrelatedness among phytoplasma taxa inferred by secY gene-based phylogeny was nearly congruent with that inferred by 16S rRNA gene-based phylogeny. Phylogenetic analysis based on the secY gene permitted finer differentiation of phytoplasma strains, however. The secY gene-based phylogeny not only readily resolved 16Sr subgroups within a given 16Sr group, but also delineated distinct lineages irresolvable by 16S rRNA gene-based phylogeny. Such high resolving power makes the secY gene a more useful genetic marker than the 16S rRNA gene for finer differentiation of closely related phytoplasma strains based on RFLP analysis with selected restriction enzymes. Such strains were readily identified by collective secY RFLP patterns. The genetic interrelationships among these strains were determined by pattern similarity coefficients, which coincided with delineations by phylogenetic analysis. This study also revealed two heterogeneous spc operons present in the phytoplasma clade. This latter finding may have significant implications for phytoplasma evolution.

Abstract: This study examined the associations between clinical anxiety, domains of emotional intelligence (EI), and three clinician-rated indices of maladjustment. Of key interest was whether social phobia (SP) is unique among anxiety disorders in being characterized by lower levels of Interpersonal and, particularly, Intrapersonal EI, and whether these differentially predict maladjustment. Individuals with SP (n = 169) obsessive-compulsive disorder (n = 65) and panic disorder (n = 64), and nonclinical controls (n = 169) completed the short form self-report Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQ-i: S). All anxiety disorder groups showed lower total EI than controls, and differed among themselves with the SP group displaying the lowest levels of total EI and lower scores on two EQ-i:S subscales (Interpersonal and, more robustly, Intrapersonal). The Intrapersonal dimension alone predicted all indices of greater maladjustment in the SP group. These findings indicate a negative relationship between anxiety disorders and EI, and reaffirm the foremost link between Intrapersonal EI and SP and its functional outcomes.

Abstract: Results from a recent taxometric investigation of the alexithymia construct, measured by the 20-Item Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), with English-speaking samples in Canada provided evidence that alexithymia is best conceptualized as a dimensional rather than a categorical construct. The aim of the current investigation was to attempt to generalize the outcome of this earlier investigation by examining the latent structure of the alexithymia construct in a sample whose primary language was not English. A second aim was to examine the latent structure in men and women separately as some investigators propose that typological differences in the nature of alexithymia may differ by gender. The sample comprised 5194 (2377 men, 2817 women) residents of Finland who as part of a population-based health survey, supported by the Finnish government, had completed a Finnish-language translation of the TAS-20. Three non-redundant taxometric analyses were performed in the total sample and for men and women separately, using item sets from the TAS-20 as indicators. The outcomes of the taxometric analyses for all three samples were similar to those in the Canadian study. These findings provide further evidence that alexithymia is a dimensional construct.

Abstract: Just as uni-directional Rayleigh waves at the traction-free surface of a transversely isotropic elastic half-space and Stoneley waves at the interface between two such media may have arbitrary waveform and may be represented in terms of a single function harmonic in a half-plane, it is shown that surface-guided waves travelling simultaneously in all directions parallel to the surface may be represented, at each instant, in terms of a single function satisfying Laplace’s equation in a three-dimensional half-space. That harmonic function is determined so that its normal derivative at the surface equals the normal displacement of the surface (or interface). It is shown, moreover, that the time evolution of that normal displacement may be any solution to the membrane equation with wave speed being equal to that of classical, uni-directional, time-harmonic Rayleigh or Stoneley waves. A similar representation is also shown to exist for Schölte waves at a fluid–solid interface, in the non-evanescent case. Thus, every surface- or interface-guided disturbance in media having rotational symmetry about the surface normal is governed by the membrane equation with appropriate wave speed, provided that the combination of materials allows uni-directional, time-harmonic waves that are non-evanescent. Conversely, each solution to the membrane equation may be used to construct a representation of either a Rayleigh wave, a Stoneley wave or a (non-evanescent) Schölte wave. In each case, the disturbance at all depths may be represented at each instant in terms of a single function harmonic in a half-space.

Abstract: The 20-item Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20; Bagby, Parker, & Taylor, 1994; Bagby, Taylor, & Parker, 1994) is the most widely used self-report measure of the alexithymia construct. The TAS-20 comprises 3 factors that assess difficulty identifying feelings, difficulty describing feelings, and externally oriented thinking. Although the instrument is being increasingly used with adolescent respondents, the psychometric properties of the TAS-20 have not been systematically evaluated in preadult populations. In the present study, we examined measurement invariance of the factor structure, internal reliability, and mean levels of responses on the TAS-20 in groups of younger adolescents (aged 13-14 years), middle adolescents (aged 15-16 years), and older adolescents (aged 17-18 years), as well as in a comparison group of young adults (aged 19-21 years). Formal readability analysis of the TAS-20 assessment was also conducted. Results revealed systematic age differences in the factor structure and psychometric properties of the TAS-20, with the quality of measurement progressively deteriorating with younger age. Much of this effect could be attributed to the reading difficulty of the scale. The use of the TAS-20 with teenage respondents is not recommended without appropriate adaptation and further psychometric validation. Several adaptation strategies are discussed.
