Objective: Acute graft-versus-host-disease (aGVHD) develops in 10-80% of allo-HSCT patients. More than half of all aGVHD cases are refractory to first-line therapy with steroids. We hypothesized that bowel wall thickness at the time of aGVHD diagnosis could be an early sign of steroid-refractory aGVHD with gut involvement., Method: Our prospective study included 85 patients with hematological malignancies who had undergone allo-HSCT. We used an inexpensive, widespread and simple method of transabdominal ultrasonography to examine bowel wall thickness in patients suspected to have gut aGVHD., Results: Descending colon wall thickness was significantly greater in patients with gut aGVHD later found to be steroid-refractory than in patients with steroid-sensitive gut aGVHD, with AUC-0.73 (95% CI 0.58-0.87, p = 0.013). We showed that bowel wall thickness could predict the steroid-refractoriness of aGVHD., Conclusion: Transabdominal ultrasonography could be used as a marker of steroid-refractory aGVHD with gut involvement after allo-HSCT., (© 2021. The International Atomic Energy Agency has coordinated an international project addressing enhancements of methods for modelling in post-closure safety assessments of solid radioactive waste disposal. The project used earlier published work from the IAEA biosphere modelling and assessment (BIOMASS) project to further develop methods and techniques. The task was supported by a parallel on-going project within the BIOPROTA forum. The output from the project is described in detail in a forthcoming IAEA report. Here an overview of the work is given to provide researchers in the broader fields of radioecology and radioactive waste disposal with a summarised review of the enhanced BIOMASS methodology and the work that has been undertaken during the project. It is hoped that such dissemination will support and promote integrated understanding and coherent treatment of the biosphere component within the overall assessment process. The key activities undertaken in the project were: review and identification of those parts of the original BIOMASS methodology that needed enhancement, discussions on lessons learned from applying the BIOMASS method, using real examples to assess the methodology and its usefulness, and writing of those parts of the methodology that were considered could benefit from refinement or for which new guidance was required to take account of scientific developments. The work has shown that the overall approach in the original BIOMASS methodology has proven sound. However, the enhanced version clarifies the need for an iterative and holistic approach with system understanding central to the approach. Specifically, experience, especially in site-specific contexts, has emphasised that adequate system understanding is essential in underpinning safety assessments for radioactive waste disposal. Peptide pore blockers and their fluorescent derivatives are useful molecular probes to study the structure and functions of the voltage-gated potassium Kv1.3 channel, which is considered as a pharmacological target in the treatment of autoimmune and neurological disorders. We present Kv1.3 fluorescent ligand, GFP-MgTx, constructed on the basis of green fluorescent protein (GFP) and margatoxin (MgTx), the peptide, which is widely used in physiological studies of Kv1.3. Expression of the fluorescent ligand in E. coli cells resulted in correctly folded and functionally active GFP-MgTx with a yield of 30 mg per 1 L of culture. Complex of GFP-MgTx with the Kv1.3 binding site is reported to have the dissociation constant of 11 ± 2 nM. GFP-MgTx as a component of an analytical system based on the hybrid KcsA-Kv1.3 channel is shown to be applicable to recognize Kv1.3 pore blockers of peptide origin and to evaluate their affinities to Kv1.3. GFP-MgTx can be used in screening and pre-selection of Kv1.3 channel blockers as potential drug candidates.

Ongoing national programmes and International forums have in recent decades developed and enhanced methods and strategies in how to address the characterisation of potentially suitable sites for radioactive waste repositories. Siting processes, site selection and site investigation programmes have been conducted for near surface and geological repositories and plans for construction are in progress or have already been implemented. Lessons learned from these national and international programmes are available and results are published. In this paper we synthesise the methods and our lessons learned in how to plan, conduct, and achieve site understanding. Effective site understanding should incorporate a multi-disciplinary and integrated view of geosphere and biosphere information for a site, together with the designed parts of a repository or installation that constitute the total system. We argue that this integrated approach, following a staged program of repository development and adopting a graded approach to assessment at each stage, is to be recommended. The recommendation is supported by the results of international cooperation and progress with national programmes (e.g. the Swedish SKB). Further, we argue that this strategy is valid as a foundation for planning and execution of other types of radioactive waste management programmes such as decommissioning, legacy site management and remediation projects., (© 2021 Society for Radiological Protection. This study is novel for several reasons: We used a thin drop cast layer of dry photosensitive materials to study the behaviors of wet photopolymer media using microscopic distances during the Self-Written Waveguide (SWW) process; then, we examined the self-trajectories formed inside the solid material. The results provide a framework for theoretical and experimental examinations by handling the effects of manipulating the alignment of fibers. The other main advantage of these techniques is their lightweight, easy to process, highly flexible, and ultimately low-cost nature. First, the SWW process in wet photopolymer media (liquid solutions) was examined under three cases: single-, counter-, and co-fiber exposure. Then, the SWWs formed inside the solid material were examined along with the effects of manipulating the alignment of the fibers. In all cases, high precision measurements were used to position the fiber optic cables (FOCs) before exposure using a microscope. The self-writing process was indirectly monitored by observing (imaging) the light emerging from the side of the material sample during SWW formation. In this way, we examined the optical waveguide trajectories formed in Acrylamide/Polyvinyl Alcohol (AA/PVA), a photopolymer material (sensitized at 532 nm). First, the transmission of light by this material is characterized. Then, the bending and merging of the waveguides that occur are investigated. The predictions of our model are shown to qualitatively agree with the observed trajectories. The largest index changes taking place at any time during exposure, i.e., during SWW formation, are shown to take place at the positions where the largest exposure light intensity is present. Typically, such maxima exist close to the input face. The first maximum is referred to as the location of the Primary Eye . Other local maxima also appear further along the SWW and are referred to as Secondary Eyes , i.e., eyes deeper within the material.

Objectives : Defining historical changes and outcomes in the use of gastrostomy in the management of Scottish MND patients. Methods : The 1989-1998 and 2015-2016 Scottish national MND cohorts were used to examine the frequency, timing, and survival related to gastrostomy. The cohorts were censored for survival analysis. Results : There were 261 cases, 119 (46%) from the new register (2015-2016) and 142 (54%) from the old register (1989-1999). Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tubes were used exclusively in the old register vs. the new register where PEG (45%), Radiologically inserted gastrostomy (RIG) (44%) and a small number of peroral image-guided gastrostomy (PIGG) tubes (11%), p  < 0.01 were used. Odds of 30-d mortality in the old register were 2.8 times that in the new register, p  < 0.01. Median survival time from gastrostomy was significantly higher in the new register, 2.7 months, p  < 0.05. Median survival time from onset was also higher in the new register but non-significant, 3.2 months, p  = 0.30. Multivariate analysis identified age at onset (hazard ratio [HR] 1.02 p  = 0.01), time from onset to diagnosis (HR 0.74 p  < 0.01), subtype of onset (HR 1.52 p  = 0.01), with gastrostomy and Riluzole interacting as variables that predict risk of death. Conclusions : Gastrostomy use has increased with techniques changing over time. It is safer and survival time has increased post gastrostomy. Being older and diagnosed more quickly increases risk of death whilst taking Riluzole combined with gastrostomy reduced risk of death. Survival from onset has not significantly changed in Scottish MND patients having gastrostomy.

Non-human biota in radiological risk assessment is typically evaluated using Reference Organisms (ROs) or Reference Animals and Plants (RAPs), for all exposure situations. However, it still remains open whether the use of an increased number of species would improve the ability to demonstrate protectiveness of the environment. In this paper, the representativeness of a broader list of fauna is tested in terms of the geometrical characteristics and habits for radiological risk assessments in the case of routine discharges from a nuclear installation: the Cadarache centre. A list of terrestrial animal species, compiled from ecological inventories carried out around it was evaluated. A first survey around the centre inventoried >400 terrestrial fauna species, which were then filtered to reduce the number to 28 species for which dose assessments were carried out. Despite the differences between geometries for those site-specific species and the ROs (including RAPs), the absorbed dose rates calculated for both were very close (within a factor of two). Regardless of the studied organism, the absorbed dose rates calculated for the discharge scenario were mainly related to internal exposure, particularly for tritium ( 3 H) and carbon 14 ( 14 C), showing that there would be an acceptable dose rates difference between species from the same organism group. Additionally, sensitivity analyses were conducted to determine if the use of generic, predefined ROs was enough to assure an adequate protection of endangered species. It was observed that for every radionuclide the difference between assessments for site-specific species and ROs are unlikely to exceed a factor of 3. Hence, the result of this evaluation indicates that the use of generic ROs for non-human biota radiological risk assessment covers sufficiently other species, including endangered ones., (Copyright © 2018. Background: In both Russia and Sweden, the dominant hepatitis C virus (HCV) is genotype 1, but around one-third of patients have genotype 3 infection. For such countries, HCV genotype testing is recommended prior to therapy. An effective pangenotypic therapy may potentially eliminate the need for genotyping. In this study, we evaluated the efficacy and safety of sofosbuvir/velpatasvir for 12 weeks in patients from Russia and Sweden., Methods: In an open-label, single-arm phase-3 study, patients could have HCV genotype 1-6 infection and were treatment-naïve or interferon treatment-experienced. All patients received sofosbuvir/velpatasvir, once daily for 12 weeks. The primary endpoint was sustained virologic response 12 weeks post-treatment (SVR12)., Results: Of 122 patients screened, 119 were enrolled and treated. Overall, half (50%) were male, 18% had cirrhosis, and 24% had failed prior interferon-based therapy. In total, 66% of patients were infected with HCV genotype 1 (59% 1b and 7% 1a), 6% with genotype 2, and 29% with genotype 3. The overall SVR12 rate was 99% (118/119, 95% confidence interval 95-100%). One treatment-experienced patient infected with HCV genotype 3 experienced virologic relapse after completing treatment. The most common adverse events were headache (16%) and fatigue (7%). Serious adverse events were observed in four patients, but none were related to treatment. No patients discontinued treatment due to adverse events., Conclusion: Sofosbuvir/velpatasvir as a pangenotypic treatment for 12 weeks was highly effective in patients from Russia and Sweden infected with HCV genotypes 1, 2, or 3. Background: Patient outcomes in gastric adenocarcinoma are poor due to late diagnosis. Detecting and treating at the premalignant stage has the potential to improve this. Helicobacter pylori is also a strong risk factor for this disease., Aims: Primary aims were to assess the diagnostic accuracy of magnified narrow band imaging (NBI-Z) endoscopy and serology in detecting normal mucosa, H. pylori gastritis and gastric atrophy. Secondary aims were to compare the diagnostic accuracies of two classification systems using both NBI-Z and white light endoscopy with magnification (WLE-Z) and evaluate the inter-observer agreement., Methods: Patients were prospectively recruited. Images of gastric mucosa were stored with histology and serum for IgG H. pylori and Pepsinogen (PG) I/II ELISAs. Blinded expert endoscopists agreed on mucosal pattern. Mucosal images and serological markers were compared with histology. Kappa statistics determined inter-observer variability for randomly allocated images among four experts and four non-experts., Results: 116 patients were prospectively recruited. Diagnostic accuracy of NBI-Z for determining normal gastric mucosa was 0.87(95%CI 0.82-0.92), H. pylori gastritis 0.65(95%CI 0.55-0.75) and gastric atrophy 0.88(95%CI 0.81-0.94). NBI-Z was superior to serology at detecting gastric atrophy: NBI-Z gastric atrophy 0.88(95%CI 0.81-0.94) vs PGI/II ratio < 3 0.74(95%CI 0.62-0.85) p<.0001. Overall NBI-Z was superior to WLE-Z in detecting disease using two validated classifications. Inter-observer agreement was 0.63(95%CI 0.51-0.73)., Conclusions: NBI-Z accurately detects changes in the GI mucosa which currently depend on histology. NBI-Z is useful in the detection of precancerous conditions, potentially improving patient outcomes with early intervention to prevent gastric cancer.

The aim was to incorporate vegetables containing the phytochemicals quercetin, apigenin, glucoraphanin and carotenoids into a processed potato-based snack and assess their bioaccessibility and bioavailability. Three different processing routes were tested for incorporation and retention of phytochemicals in snacks using individually quick frozen or freeze-dried vegetables. No significant differences in the uptake or transport of quercetin or apigenin between a vegetable mix or snacks were observed using the CaCo-2 transwell model. Simulated in vitro digestions predicted a substantial release of quercetin and apigenin, some release of glucoraphanin but none for carotenes from either the snack or equivalent steamed vegetables. In humans, there were no significant differences in the bioavailability of quercetin, apigenin or glucoraphanin from the snack or equivalent steamed vegetables. We have shown that significant quantities of freeze-dried vegetables can be incorporated into snacks with good retention of phytochemicals and with similar bioavailability to equivalent steamed vegetables.

The work has been supported by results of parallel on-going research that has been published in a variety of reports and peer reviewed journal articles. The project is due to be described in detail in a forthcoming IAEA report. Noting the multi-disciplinary nature of post-closure safety assessments, here, an overview of the work is given to provide researchers in the broader fields of radioecology and radiological safety assessment with a review of the work that has been undertaken. It is hoped that such dissemination will support and promote integrated understanding and coherent treatment of climate change and landscape development within an overall assessment process. The key activities undertaken in the project were: identification of the key processes that drive environmental change (mainly those associated with climate and climate change), and description of how a relevant future may develop on a global scale; development of a methodology for characterising environmental change that is valid on a global scale, showing how modelled global changes in climate can be downscaled to provide information that may be needed for characterising environmental change in site-specific assessments, and illustrating different aspects of the methodology in a number of case studies that show the evolution of site characteristics and the implications for the dose assessment models. Overall, the study has shown that quantitative climate and landscape modelling has now developed to the stage that it can be used to define an envelope of climate and landscape change scenarios at specific sites and under specific greenhouse-gas emissions assumptions that is suitable for use in quantitative post-closure performance assessments. These scenarios are not predictions of the future, but are projections based on a well-established understanding of the important processes involved and their impacts on different types of landscape. The objective of this work was to establish an analytical method for the analysis of 7 Benzodiazepines (diazepam, oxazepam, temazepam, nordiazepam, desalkylflurazepam, alprazolam and α-hydroxyalprazolam) in urine specimens taken from drivers suspected of driving under the influence of drugs. The specimen, calibrator and control preparation involved hydrolysis of conjugated benzodiazepines using β-glucuronidase in sodium acetate buffer, with incubation at 60°C for 2h. Specimens were then centrifuged, before being diluted 1 in 5 (total dilution 1 in 10), with 10% acetonitrile in water. Specimens were analysed using a Shimadzu Prominence UPLC coupled to an AB Sciex 4000 QTrap LC-MS-MS. The chromatographic column was a Shim-pack XR ODS 2.2μm. 3.0×50mm column and the mobile phase was a binary gradient system comprising of mobile phase A which was an ammonium formate/formic acid buffer dissolved in water and mobile phase B which was an ammonium formate/formic acid buffer dissolved in Acetonitrile. APCI was selected as the ionisation technique and the MS was operated in MRM mode, monitoring 2 transitions per analyte. The validation of the method is described. The method was found to be linear, accurate and precise (within day and between day) for diazepam, oxazepam, temazepam, nordiazepam, desalkylflurazepam, alprazolam and α-hydroxyalprazolam. The results of 480 cases are reviewed and show that alprazolam use was found in 35% of cases. Introduction: The aim of the study was to determine the influence of gender and sleep stages, especially rapid eye movement sleep (REM), on QT interval variability and duration in normal subjects., Methods: Polysomnographic recordings of 24 male and 24 female patients without obstructive sleep apnea were analyzed. In each patient, the QT interval variability index (QTVI) and the corrected QT interval (QTc) values were calculated as means of 2 awake, 4 non-rapid eye movement sleep (NREM) and 3 REM episodes, 300s each. For the QTc calculation, five different correction formulas were used., Results: Gender-related differences in the QT interval variability and duration were detected between all sleep stages (P<0.05). In males, mean values of QTVI while awake, in NREM and REM sleep were -1.1±0.2, -1.1±0.3, -1.3±0.2. In females, mean values of QTVI were -0.9±0.4, -0.9±0.4, and -1.1±0.3, respectively. No difference between sleep stages was detected in the mean values of QTVI and QTc in both groups (P>0.05)., Conclusion: The results of our study demonstrate no significant overall impact of sleep stages on ventricular repolarization variability and duration during physiological sleep in both genders. We found gender differences in the mean values of QTVI and QTc during different sleep stages, which confirm that gender is a modulating factor of ventricular repolarization., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Inc. Purpose/Aim: Data from chronic stroke studies have reported reduced blood flow and vascular endothelial function in the stroke-affected limb. It is unclear whether these differences are present early after stroke. First, we investigated whether vascular endothelial function in the stroke-affected limb would be different from healthy adults. Second, we examined whether between-limb differences in vascular endothelial function existed in the stroke-affected arm compared to the non-affected arm. Last, we tested whether reduced vascular endothelial function was related to pro-inflammatory markers that are present early after stroke., Materials and Methods: Vascular endothelial function was assessed by flow-mediated dilation (FMD) in the brachial artery within 72 h post-stroke. All participants withheld medications from midnight until after the procedure. Ultrasound scans and blood draws for pro-inflammatory markers occurred on the same day between 7:30 am and 9:00 am., Results: People with acute stroke had significantly lower FMD (4.2% ± 4.6%) than control participants (8.5% ± 5.2%, p = 0.037). Stroke participants had between-limb differences in FMD (4.2% ± 4.6% stroke-affected vs. 5.3% ± 4.4% non-affected, p = 0.02), whereas, the control participants did not. Of the pro-inflammatory markers, only vascular cell adhesion molecule-1(VCAM-1) had a significant relationship to FMD (stroke-affected limb, r = -0.62, p = 0.03; non-affected limb, r = -0.75, p = 0.005), but not tumor necrosis factor alpha nor interleukin-6., Conclusions: Vascular endothelial function is reduced starting in the early stage of stroke recovery. People with higher levels of VCAM-1 had a lower FMD response.

Purpose: Malignant gliomas are the most common tumors in the central nervous system with a poor prognosis. Recently, CD4 + cytotoxic T cells (CTLs) are being increasingly recognized as possessing antitumor capacity. However, their presence, activity and regulation in glioma have not been investigated in detail., Methods: To examine this, 72 grade II and grade III Han Chinese glioma patients and 30 Han Chinese healthy controls were investigated., Results: We found that compared to healthy controls, glioma patients had significantly upregulated frequencies of circulating CD4 + CTLs, identified by the expression of granzyme A (GzmA), granzyme B (GzmB) and/or perforin. The stimulated CD4 + CTLs in grade II and grade III glioma patients also had less proliferative ability than those in healthy controls, a feature of suppression that progressed with tumor grade. The frequencies of GzmB-expressing circulating CD4 + CTLs were directly associated with prognosis. We hypothesized that the programed death 1 (PD-1)/PD-ligand 1 (L1) interaction possibly contributed to the suppression of CD4 + CTLs in grade II and grade III glioma, since an upregulation of PD-1 was observed on CD4 + CTLs in glioma compared to those in the healthy individuals. Blockade of the PD-1/PD-L1 interaction with neutralizing antibodies significantly increased the proliferation and granzyme or perforin production by CD4 + CTLs in grade II and grade III glioma patients., Conclusions: These data suggest that the CD4 + CTLs in grade II and grade III glioma patients contribute to antitumor immunity and could be suppressed by PD-1 signal transduction.

Purpose: Guillain-Barré syndrome (GBS) varies in severity and outcome. Hyponatremia predicts poor outcome but previous studies have used divergent methodology and (pseudo)hyponatremia caused by intravenous immunoglobulin administration may confound analysis. We studied if the plasma sodium level at admission was associated with GBS outcome., Methods: All 69 patients at least 16 years of age treated for GBS in Turku University Hospital in 2004-2013 were included in the study. Clinical information was obtained from patient charts., Results: Women had lower sodium levels at admission (138; IQR 135, 140) compared to men (140; IQR 138, 142; p = 0.0116) but no association of sodium levels with demographics, pre-hospital variables or basic GBS characteristics was found. Multivariate analyses showed lower admission sodium levels to be associated with worse functional status at one year from disease onset (OR 1.37; 95% CI 1.07-1.76; p = 0.0136) and probability of being discharged to another care facility from the hospital (OR 1.31; 95% CI 1.05-1.64; p = 0.0180) but not associated with need of intensive care unit care (p = 0.09) or mechanical ventilation (p = 0.45), length of hospital stay (p =0.48) or functional status at six months (p = 0.07)., Conclusions: Low plasma sodium level at admission is associated with a more severe disease course and a worse outcome in GBS independently of previously identified prognostic factors. Hyponatremia does not, however, appear to be caused by disease-specific factors.

Background: The association between topographic patterns, risk factors and stroke mechanisms of ICAS in first-ever stroke remains unknown., Methods: A large sample sized retrospective study was performed on first-ever ICAS ischemic stroke using DWI and MRA., Results: Hypertension (60.92%), cigarette smoking (26.82%), MCA (76.65%) and multiple vessels (65.37%) stenosis, were the major factors favoring different mechanisms. Subcortical lesions were the most occurring topographic patterns (41.4%). The common mechanism was LBO (66.3%). Statistical analysis showed a significant relationship between lesion patterns and mechanisms (r = 0.384, P = 0.001). Single mechanism had the higher apoB/apoAI ratio (P = 0.005) and levels of plasma apoB (P = 0.007) compared with multiple mechanisms. The anterior circulation stroke were more multiple mechanisms as compared to the posterior circulation stroke (P = 0.001). LBO was more prevalent in posterior circulation stroke than in anterior circulation stroke (P = 0.001)., Conclusions: The topographic patterns of ischemic lesions is helpful in early identification of different mechanisms of ICAS. Monitoring apoB and apoB/apoA1 may help to predict the mechanism of stroke with ICAS. The prevalence of mechanisms differ between anterior and posterior circulation stroke with ICAS.

Background: Recent randomized trials have consistently demonstrated a clinical benefit of endovascular therapy (ET) over best medical therapy (including intravenous (IV) thrombolysis in eligible patients) or IV thrombolysis only in selected patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) due to proximal occlusion in the carotid territory. Previous study demonstrates that lack of improvement (LOI) at 24 hours is an independent predictor of poor outcome and death at 3 months in patients with AIS treated with IV alteplase. However, LOI at 24 hours following ET has not been studied systematically. The purpose of this study is to identify predictors of LOI at 24 hours in patients with AIS after ET as well as the relationship between LOI and unfavorable outcome at 3 months., Methods: A total of 98 consecutive patients with AIS treated with ET in two separate stroke centers from 2010 to 2014 were retrospectively reviewed. Data on demographics, preexisting vascular risk factors, occlusion site, pre- and post-treatment modified Treatment in Cerebral Ischemia (mTICI) classification, collaterals and National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) score on admission as well as 24 hours after the endovascular procedurals were collected. LOI was defined as a reduction of 3 points or less on the NIHSS at 24 hours compared with baseline. A 3-month functional outcome was assessed using the modified Rankin scale (mRS). Unfavorable outcome was prespecified as a score of more than 2 on the mRS. The onset-to-reperfusion time (ORT) was defined as time to mTICI 2b or 3 or end of procedure. Long ORT was defined as time to reperfusion beyond 6 hours. Poor reperfusion was defined as mTICI ≦2a. The pretreatment collateral circulation extent was graded as poor (grades 0-1) or good (grades 2-4)., Results: Among the 98 patients with AIS who were treated with ET, LOI was present in 48 (49%) subjects. Multivariate analysis indicated that poor collaterals (odds ratio [OR] 3.25; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.29-8.19; p = 0.012) and long ORT (OR 3.97, 95% CI: 1.66-9.54; p = 0.002) were independent predictors of LOI. LOI (OR 7.18, 95% CI: 2.39-21.61; p < 0.001) was independently associated with unfavorable outcome at 3 months., Conclusion: Among patients with AIS treated with ET, as an independent predictor of unfavorable outcome, LOI at 24 hours is associated with poor collaterals and long ORT.

Background: Sesamin is one of the most abundant lignans in sesame and has multiple functions and high values such as antioxidative effect and promoting-immunity function. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of sesamin supplementation on glycemic status, serum levels of inflammatory markers and adiponectinin patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus., Material and Methods: Forty-eight patients with type 2 diabetes participated in this double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled clinical trial. Subjects were randomly assigned to two groups: intervention group (sesamin capsules; 200 mg/day, n = 24) and control group (placebo capsules; 200 mg/day starch, n = 24). Anthropometric indices and serum levels of fasting blood sugar (FBS), glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), insulin, tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin-6 (IL-6), high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) and adiponectin were assessed at the baseline and after 8 weeks., Result: Sesamin supplementation caused a significant reduction in FBS, HbA1C and TNF-α levels compared with the placebo (p < 0.05). Waist circumference, hip circumference, body adiposity index (BAI), FBS, HbA1c, TNF-α, and IL-6 levels were decreased, and adiponectin levels were increased significantly in the intervention group at the end of study (p < 0.05)., Conclusion: According to the beneficial effects of sesamin supplement on glycemic status and inflammatory factors, it may be considered as a supplementary therapeutic approach for diabetic patients. However, future investigations are needed in this field.

SystemsX. ch has the objective of supporting and promoting the paradigm shift in life sciences research, moving from qualitative to quantitative and predictive biology. The Swiss government has invested CHF 220 million in around 250 interdisciplinary projects involving more than 400 research groups since 2008. Almost half of the projects are designed for PhD students and postdocs to train the next generation of systems biologists. The initiative will conclude in 2018; different measures will ensure its sustainable impact.
