Abstract

Abstract Background Weight gain during pregnancy has an important impact on maternal and neonatal health. Unlike the Institute of Medicine (IOM) recommendations for weight gain in singleton pregnancies, those for twin gestations are termed “provisional”, as they are based on limited data. The objectives of this study were to determine the neonatal and maternal outcomes associated with gaining weight below, within and above the IOM provisional guidelines on gestational weight gain in twin pregnancies, and additionally, to explore ranges of gestational weight gain among women who delivered twins at the recommended gestational age and birth weight, and those who did not. Methods A retrospective cohort study of women who gave birth to twins at ≥20 weeks gestation, with a birth weight ≥ 500 g was conducted in Nova Scotia, Canada (2003–2014). The complex antiferromagnetic orders observed in the honeycomb iridates prevent access to a spin-liquid ground state. Here the authors apply extremely high magnetic fields to destroy the antiferromagnetic order in γ-lithium iridate and reveal a bistable, strongly correlated spin state.

Abstract

Heavy fermion materials: Emergence of field-induced magnetic anisotropy Magnetic anisotropy emerges in structurally isotropic heavy fermion metals under large magnetic fields. Compounds that contain rare earth or actinide ions with unpaired f-electrons can exhibit a range of fascinating phenomena, such as heavy fermion behaviour. The role of magnetic and electronic anisotropies is often crucial for understanding the rich physics of these materials, but it can often be difficult to disentangle the contributions from structural anisotropies. An international team of researchers led by Philip Moll from the Max-Planck-Institute for Chemical Physics of Solids now show that when magnetic fields are applied, with strengths similar to the crystal fields, magnetic anisotropies can emerge in cubic f-electron materials that are structurally isotropic. They show that this arises from non-spherically symmetric spin interactions, which exposes failures of the spherically symmetric models often used to describe these systems.

Abstract

Auger processes are at the core of electron emission in solid-state physics, however measuring the spectra of electrons emitted solely as a result of Auger transitions remains a challenge. Here, the authors measure the electron energy spectrum in graphene and observe the prominence of Auger-like processes in its valence band.

Abstract

Abstract The excitonic insulator phase has long been predicted to form in proximity to a band gap opening in the underlying band structure. The character of the pairing is conjectured to crossover from weak (BCS-like) to strong coupling (BEC-like) as the underlying band structure is tuned from the metallic to the insulating side of the gap opening. Here we report the high-magnetic field phase diagram of graphite to exhibit just such a crossover. By way of comprehensive angle-resolved magnetoresistance measurements, we demonstrate that the underlying band gap opening occurs inside the magnetic field-induced phase, paving the way for a systematic study of the BCS-BEC-like crossover by means of conventional condensed matter probes.

Abstract

Materials in large magnetic fields can be driven into the quantum limit, where electrons occupy only the lowest Landau level and the response is determined by interactions. Here the authors go beyond this limit by emptying one or two of bismuth’s electronic valleys, depending on the field direction.

Abstract

Abstract The azimuthal correlations of D mesons with charged particles were measured with the ALICE apparatus in pp collisions at $${\sqrt{s}}=7~\mathrm {TeV}$$ s = 7 TeV and p–Pb collisions at $${\sqrt{{{s}}_{\scriptscriptstyle {\mathrm{NN}}}}}=5.02~\mathrm {TeV}$$ s NN = 5.02 TeV at the Large Hadron Collider. $$\mathrm{D}^{0}$$ D 0 , $${\mathrm{D}^{+}}$$ D + , and $${\mathrm{D}^{*+}}$$ D ∗ + mesons and their charge conjugates with transverse momentum $$30.3~\mathrm {GeV}/c$$ p T > 0.3 GeV / c . The yield of charged particles in the correlation peak induced by the jet containing the D meson and the peak width are compatible within uncertainties in the two collision systems. The data are described within uncertainties by Monte-Carlo simulations based on PYTHIA, POWHEG, and EPOS 3 event generators.

212. Genetic contribution to lipid levels in early life based on 158 loci validated in adults: the FAMILY study

Abstract

Abstract The contribution of polymorphisms associated with adult lipids in early life is unknown. We studied 158 adult lipid polymorphisms in 1440 participants (544 children, 544 mothers and 324 fathers) of the Family Atherosclerosis Monitoring In early life (FAMILY) birth cohort. Total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and triglycerides (TG) measurements were collected at birth, 3 and 5 years of age. Polymorphisms were genotyped using the Illumina Cardio-Metabochip array. Genotype scores (GS) were calculated for TC, HDL-C, LDL-C and TG. Linear and mixed-effects regressions adjusted for sex, age and population stratification were performed. The GS was associated with LDL-C level at 3 and 5 years (β = 0.017 ± 0.003, P = 2.9 × 10−8; β = 0.020 ± 0.003, P = 5.7 × 10−9) and from birth to 5 years (β = 0.013 ± 0.003, P = 2.6 × 10−7). The GS was associated with TC level at 3 and 5 years (β = 0.009 ± 0.002, P = 9.1 × 10−7; β = 0.009 ± 0.002, P = 7.7 × 10−6). CETP rs3764261 was associated with the HDL-C level from birth to 5 years (β = 0.064 ± 0.014, P = 7.4 × 10−6). AMPD3 rs2923084 was associated with the HDL-C level at 5 years (β = 0.096 ± 0.024, P = 9.7 × 10−5). Known loci associated with blood lipids in adults are associated with TC, LDL-C and HDL-C, but not TG in early life. Genetically predisposed children may benefit from early lipid lowering preventative strategies.

Abstract

Over the course of the COVID-19 pandemic, officials have introduced measures to preserve the health of incarcerated individuals and prison employees. To understand the impact of COVID-related correctional policies on individuals with incarcerated friends and family members, we conducted 181 longitudinal interviews from April 2020 to January 2021 with 29 such ‘loved ones.’ Participants emphasized concerns about (1) health and safety; (2) unclear, unpredictable and untrusted communications; and (3) diminished personal intimacy. We analyze these findings using an ‘administrative burden’ framework and discuss possible reforms. We also suggest a wider applicably of this framework for studying individuals who have diverse encounters with the criminal justice system.

Abstract

This study aimed to provide comprehensive diagnostic and candidate analyses in a pediatric rare disease cohort through the Genomic Answers for Kids program.Extensive analyses of 960 families with suspected genetic disorders included short-read exome sequencing and short-read genome sequencing (srGS); PacBio HiFi long-read genome sequencing (HiFi-GS); variant calling for single nucleotide variants (SNV), structural variant (SV), and repeat variants; and machine-learning variant prioritization. Structured phenotypes, prioritized variants, and pedigrees were stored in PhenoTips database, with data sharing through controlled access the database of Genotypes and Phenotypes.Diagnostic rates ranged from 11% in patients with prior negative genetic testing to 34.5% in naive patients. Incorporating SVs from genome sequencing added up to 13% of new diagnoses in previously unsolved cases. HiFi-GS yielded increased discovery rate with4-fold more rare coding SVs compared with srGS. Variants and genes of unknown significance remain the most common finding (58% of nondiagnostic cases).Computational prioritization is efficient for diagnostic SNVs. Thorough identification of non-SNVs remains challenging and is partly mitigated using HiFi-GS sequencing. Abstract

Recent work inspired by graph theory has begun to conceptualize mental disorders as networks of interacting symptoms. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptom networks have been investigated in clinical samples meeting full diagnostic criteria, including military veterans, natural disaster survivors, civilian survivors of war, and child sexual abuse survivors. Despite reliable associations across reported networks, more work is needed to compare central symptoms across trauma types. Additionally, individuals without a diagnosis who still experience symptoms, also referred to as subthreshold cases, have not been explored with network analysis in veterans. A sample of 1,050 Iraq/Afghanistan-era U.S. military veterans (851 males, mean age = 36.3, SD = 9.53) meeting current full-criteria PTSD (n = 912) and subthreshold PTSD (n = 138) were assessed with the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Disorders (SCID). Combat Exposure Scale (CES) scores were used to group the sample meeting full-criteria into high (n = 639) and low (n = 273) combat exposure subgroups. Networks were estimated using regularized partial correlation models in the R-package qgraph, and robustness tests were performed with bootnet. Frequently co-occurring symptom pairs (strong network connections) emerged between two avoidance symptoms, hypervigilance and startle response, loss of interest and detachment, as well as, detachment and restricted affect. These associations replicate findings reported across PTSD trauma types. A symptom network analysis of PTSD in a veteran population found significantly greater overall connectivity in the full-criteria PTSD group as compared to the subthreshold PTSD group. Additionally, novel findings indicate that the association between intrusive thoughts and irritability is a feature of the symptom network of veterans with high levels of combat exposure. Mean node predictability is high for PTSD symptom networks, averaging 51.5% shared variance. With the tools described here and by others, researchers can help refine diagnostic criteria for PTSD, develop more accurate measures for assessing PTSD, and eventually inform therapies that target symptoms with strong network connections to interrupt interconnected symptom complexes and promote functional recovery.

Abstract

In addition to combat trauma, childhood and adult non-military, interpersonal trauma exposures have been linked to a range of psychiatric symptoms (e.g., alcohol use problems, posttraumatic stress disorder [PTSD], depression symptoms) in veterans. However, few studies simultaneously explore the associations between these civilian and combat trauma types and mental health outcomes. Using a sample of combat-exposed veterans who were previously deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan ( N = 302), this study sought to (a) understand the independent associations of civilian interpersonal trauma (i.e., childhood trauma and non-military adult trauma) and combat-related trauma with post-deployment alcohol use, PTSD symptoms, and depressive symptoms, respectively and (b) to examine the interactive effects of trauma type to test whether childhood and non-military adult trauma moderate the association of combat trauma with these outcomes. A path analytic framework was used to allow for the simultaneous prediction of these associations. In the final model non-military adult trauma and combat trauma were found to be significantly associated with PTSD symptoms and depression symptoms, but not average amount of drinks consumed per drinking day. Childhood trauma was not associated with any outcomes (i.e., PTSD symptoms, depression symptoms, average amount of drinks consumed per day). Only combat trauma was significantly associated with average amount of drinks consumed per day. Results underscore the importance of assessing multiple trauma types and considering trauma as a non-specific risk factor, as different trauma types may differentially predict various mental health outcomes other than PTSD. Further, results highlight the noteworthiness of considering co-occurring outcomes within the veteran community. Limitations, future directions, and implications of diversity are discussed.

227. Data from TSC2 Deficiency Unmasks a Novel Necrosis Pathway That Is Suppressed by the RIP1/RIP3/MLKL Signaling Cascade

Abstract

Tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC) is a genetic multiorgan disorder characterized by the development of neoplastic lesions in kidney, lung, brain, heart, and skin. It is caused by an inactivating mutation in tumor suppressor genes coding the TSC1/TSC2 complex, resulting in the hyperactivation of mTOR- and Raf/MEK/MAPK–dependent signaling that stimulates tumor cell proliferation and metastasis. Despite its oncogenic effect, cells with TSC deficiency were more sensitive to oxidative stress and dependent on mitochondrial metabolism, providing a rationale for a new therapeutic approach. The current study shows that simultaneous inhibition of two major pathways regulating redox homeostasis using l-buthionine-sulfoximine (BSO, glutathione synthesis inhibitor) and auranofin (thioredoxin reductase inhibitor) induces oxidative burst, mitochondrial damage, and necrotic cell death in TSC-deficient cells in a highly synergistic and cell context–specific manner. Furthermore, blocking RIP1/RIP3/MLKL–dependent signaling using chemical inhibitors necrostatin-1 (Nec-1) and necrosulfonamide (NSA) synergizes with BSO and auranofin in killing TSC-deficient cells. Expression analysis demonstrated that RIP1, RIP3, and MLKL protein levels are elevated in cells with TSC2 deficiency, and their inactivation enhances mitochondrial dysfunction in a glutaminolysis-dependent and autophagy-independent manner. Finally, supplementation with the mitochondrial metabolite α-ketoglutarate, whose synthesis is regulated by RIP1/RIP3/MLKL, rescues cells from the sensitizing effect of Nec-1 and NSA. Together, this study identifies a previously unrecognized novel regulated necrotic death pathway that involves mitochondrial homeostasis, is suppressed by the RIP1/RIP3/MLKL signaling in TSC-deficient cells, and could be a promising therapeutic target for TSC-associated tumors. 231. Long-Term Outcomes of Multiple versus a Single Course of Antenatal Steroids: A Systematic Review

Abstract

Multiple courses versus a single course of antenatal corticosteroids (ACS) have been associated with mild respiratory benefits but also adverse outcomes like smaller head circumference and birth weight. Long-term effects warrant study. We systematically reviewed long-term outcomes (≥1 year) in both preterm and term birth after exposure to preterm multiple courses (including a rescue dose or course) versus a single course. We searched seven databases from January 2000 to October 2021. We included follow-up studies of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and cohort studies with births occurring in/after the year 2000, given advances in perinatal care. Two reviewers assessed titles/abstracts, articles, quality, and outcomes including psychological disorders, neurodevelopment, and anthropometry. Six follow-up studies of three RCTs and two cohort studies (over 2,860 children total) met inclusion criteria. Among children born preterm, randomization to multiple courses versus a single course of ACS was not associated with adjusted beneficial or adverse neurodevelopmental/psychological or other outcomes, but data are scant after a rescue dose (120 and 139 children, respectively, low certainty) and nonexistent after a rescue course. For children born at term (i.e., 27% of the multiple courses of ACS 5-year follow-up study of 1,728 preterm/term born children), preterm randomization to multiple courses (at least one additional course) versus a single course was significantly associated with elevated odds of neurosensory impairment (adjusted odds ratio = 3.70, 95% confidence interval: 1.57–8.75; 212 and 247 children, respectively, moderate certainty). In this systematic review of long-term outcomes after multiple courses versus a single course of ACS, there were no significant benefits or risks regarding neurodevelopment in children born preterm but little data after one rescue dose and none after a rescue course. However, multiple courses (i.e., at least one additional course) should be considered cautiously: after term birth, there are no long-term benefits but neurosensory harms.Key Points

Abstract

Cloud computing is becoming an popular model of computing. Due to the increasing complexity of the cloud service requests, it often exploits heterogeneous architecture. Moreover, some service requests (SRs)/tasks exhibit real-time features, which are required to be handled within a specified duration. Along with the stipulated temporal management, the strategy should also be energy efficient, as energy consumption in cloud computing is challenging. In this paper, we have proposed a strategy, called ``Efficient Resource Allocation of Service Request" (ERASER) for energy efficient allocation and scheduling of periodic real-time SRs on cloud platform. Our target cloud platform is consist of Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) as Processing Elements (PEs) along with the General Purpose Processors (GPP). We have further proposed, a SR migration technique to service maximum SRs. Simulation based experimental results demonstrate that the proposed methodology is capable to achieve upto 90% resource utilization with only 26% SR rejection rate over different experimental scenarios. Comparison results with other state-of-the-art techniques reveal that the proposed strategy outperforms the existing technique with 17% reduction in SR rejection rate and 21% less energy consumption. Further, the simulation outcomes have been validated on a real test-bed based on Xilinx Zynq SoC with benchmark tasks.

Abstract

Vocabulary is a critical building block for establishing mastery of content area knowledge. Two technology-based tools (InferCabulary and Content Acquisition Podcasts for Students [CAP-S]) have been found to have beneficial effects on students’ vocabulary knowledge, but efficacy of device features across varied presentation formats is unknown. The purpose of this study was to compare InferCabulary and CAP-S on four measures of vocabulary performance. Fifth-grade students (n = 656) drawn from 30 classrooms across three states participated in one of three conditions to learn 100 new vocabulary terms. Teachers ( n = 30) taught student participants new word meanings via the InferCabulary program, CAP-S instructional slides, or their business-as-usual (BAU) approach to instruction. Results indicate that when students learned vocabulary using InferCabulary or CAP-S approaches, they significantly outperformed their peers who participated in BAU vocabulary instruction. In addition, students with disabilities in the CAP-S and InferCabulary conditions scored similarly to students without disabilities in the BAU condition on most measures. Implications for research and practice are discussed.

Abstract

The different rates of thermal expansion of the many materials that make up an electronic assembly combined with temperature fluctuations are the driver of the thermal fatigue failure of solder joints. A characteristic of the Sn-Bi system, which provided the basis for many of the low process temperature solder alloys that the electronics industry is now adopting, is the very temperature-sensitive solubility of Bi and Sn in the other phase. In this study, in situ synchrotron powder x-ray diffraction was used to characterize the temperature dependence of the lattice parameters of the βSn and Bi phases in Sn-57wt%Bi and Sn-37wt%Bi. The effects of temperature and solute were separated by comparing with the data from pure βSn and pure Bi and verified using density functional theory calculations. Furthermore, the coefficients of thermal expansion of βSn and Bi during heating were also derived to reveal the thermal expansion behavior.

Abstract

Telepsychology has the potential to help mental health service providers reach millions of people in rural areas or those limited by other factors. This study examined pre-COVID-19 deterrents reported by psychologists who did not use telepsychology. Participants were 1,400 psychologists with an average of 26.3 (SD = 11.18) years in practice who were currently practicing within the United States but did not currently use telepsychology. All 50 states were represented as well as Washington, DC. The most commonly reported deterrents, from most to least frequent, were insufficient training, client safety/crisis concerns, privacy, legality, ethics, reimbursement, efficacy, prohibitive organizational policies/culture, and insufficient demand. Logistic regression analyses suggested that psychologists' deterrents varied based in part on demographic and practice characteristics. Psychologists practicing within medical centers or Veterans Affairs facilities were less likely to indicate safety, privacy, legal issues, ethics, and efficacy as a concern. Older psychologists were less deterred by reimbursement issues and more concerned about effectiveness. Those using cognitive-behavioral approaches were less likely to report efficacy and safety concerns. Cisgender men were less likely to be deterred by safety or privacy issues, and White psychologists were less likely to indicate safety as a deterrent. Additional telepsychology training and information for psychologists may increase its use and foster improved mental health care access for populations unable to attend in-person sessions. A more focused approach to training and implementation of telepsychology that considers the needs and concerns of the target psychologist group could benefit organizations promoting its use. Abstract

The production of charged pions, kaons and (anti)protons has been measured at mid-rapidity (−0.510 GeV/c), the particle ratios are consistent with those reported for pp and Pb–Pb collisions at the LHC energies. At intermediate pT the (anti)proton RpPb shows a Cronin-like enhancement, while pions and kaons show little or no nuclear modification. At high pT the charged pion, kaon and (anti)proton RpPb are consistent with unity within statistical and systematic uncertainties.
