Abstract: We forecast the scientific capabilities to improve our understanding of cosmic inflation of CORE, a proposed CMB space satellite submitted in response to the ESA fifth call for a medium-size mission opportunity. The CORE satellite will map the CMB anisotropies in temperature and polarization in 19 frequency channels spanning the range 60-600 GHz. CORE will have an aggregate noise sensitivity of 1.7µK· arcmin and an angular resolution of 5’ at 200 GHz. We explore the impact of telescope size and noise sensitivity on the inflation science return by making forecasts for several instrumental configurations. This study assumes that the lower and higher frequency channels suffice to remove foreground contaminations and complements other related studies of component separation and systematic effects, which will be reported in other papers of the series “Exploring Cosmic Origins with CORE.” We forecast the capability to determine key inflationary parameters, to lower the detection limit for the tensor-to-scalar ratio down to the 10−3 level, to chart the landscape of single field slow-roll inflationary models, to constrain the epoch of reheating, thus connecting inflation to the standard radiation-matter dominated Big Bang era, to reconstruct the primordial power spectrum, to constrain the contribution from isocurvature perturbations to the 10−3 level, to improve constraints on the cosmic string tension to a level below the presumptive GUT scale, and to improve the current measurements of primordial non-Gaussianities down to the f local NL < 1 level. For all the models explored, CORE alone will improve significantly on the present constraints on the physics of inflation. Its capabilities will be further enhanced by combining with complementary future cosmological observations.

Abstract: We discuss the potential of a next generation space-borne Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) experiment for studies of extragalactic sources. Our analysis has particular bearing on the definition of the future space project, CORE, that has been submitted in response to ESA's call for a Medium-size mission opportunity as the successor of the Planck satellite. Even though the effective telescope size will be somewhat smaller than that of Planck, CORE will have a considerably better angular resolution at its highest frequencies, since, in contrast with Planck, it will be diffraction limited at all frequencies. The improved resolution implies a considerable decrease of the source confusion, i.e. substantially fainter detection limits. In particular, CORE will detect thousands of strongly lensed high-z galaxies distributed over the full sky. The extreme brightness of these galaxies will make it possible to study them, via follow-up observations, in extraordinary detail. Also, the CORE resolution matches the typical sizes of high-z galaxy proto-clusters much better than the Planck resolution, resulting in a much higher detection efficiency; these objects will be caught in an evolutionary phase beyond the reach of surveys in other wavebands. Furthermore, CORE will provide unique information on the evolution of the star formation in virialized groups and clusters of galaxies up to the highest possible redshifts. Finally, thanks to its very high sensitivity, CORE will detect the polarized emission of thousands of radio sources and, for the first time, of dusty galaxies, at mm and sub-mm wavelengths, respectively.

Abstract: We describe a space-borne, multi-band, multi-beam polarimeter aiming at a precise and accurate measurement of the polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background. The instrument is optimized to be compatible with the strict budget requirements of a mediumsize space mission within the Cosmic Vision Programme of the European Space Agency. The instrument has no moving parts, and uses arrays of diffraction-limited Kinetic Inductance Detectors to cover the frequency range from 60 GHz to 600 GHz in 19 wide bands, in the focal plane of a 1.2 m aperture telescope cooled at 40 K, allowing for an accurate extraction of the CMB signal from polarized foreground emission. The projected CMB polarization survey sensitivity of this instrument, after foregrounds removal, is 1.7 µK·arcmin. The design is robust enough to allow, if needed, a downscoped version of the instrument covering the 100 GHz to 600 GHz range with a 0.8 m aperture telescope cooled at 85 K, with a projected CMB polarization survey sensitivity of 3.2 µK·arcmin.

Abstract: In this paper we describe QUBIC, an experiment that takes up the challenge posed by the detection of primordial gravitational waves with a novel approach, that combines the sensitivity of state-of-the art bolometric detectors with the systematic effects control typical of interferometers. The so-called 'self-calibration' is a technique deeply rooted in the interferometric nature of the instrument and allows us to clean the measured data from instrumental effects. The first module of QUBIC is a dual band instrument (150 GHz and 220 GHz) that will be deployed in Argentina during Fall 2018.

Abstract: QUBIC (the Q and U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology) is a ground-based experiment which seeks to improve the current constraints on the amplitude of primordial gravitational waves. It exploits the unique technique, among Cosmic Microwave Background experiments, of bolometric interferometry, combining together the sensitivity of bolometric detectors with the control of systematic effects typical of interferometers. QUBIC will perform sky observations in polarization, in two frequency bands centered at 150 and 220 GHz, with two kilo-pixel focal plane arrays of NbSi Transition-Edge Sensors (TES) cooled down to 350 mK. A subset of the QUBIC instrument, the so called QUBIC Technological Demonstrator (TD), with a reduced number of detectors with respect to the full instrument, will be deployed and commissioned before the end of 2018. The voltage-biased TES are read out with Time Domain Multiplexing and an unprecedented multiplexing (MUX) factor equal to 128. This MUX factor is reached with two-stage multiplexing: a traditional one exploiting Superconducting QUantum Interference Devices (SQUIDs) at 1K and a novel SiGe Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) at 60 K. The former provides a MUX factor of 32, while the latter provides a further 4. Each TES array is composed of 256 detectors and read out with four modules of 32 SQUIDs and two ASICs. A custom software synchronizes and manages the readout and detector operation, while the TES are sampled at 780 Hz (100kHz/128 MUX rate). In this work we present the experimental characterization of the QUBIC TES arrays and their multiplexing readout chain, including time constant, critical temperature, and noise properties.

Abstract: QUBIC, the Q & U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology, is a novel ground-based instrument that aims to measure the extremely faint B-mode polarisation anisotropy of the cosmic microwave background at intermediate angular scales (multipoles of = 30 − 200). Primordial B-modes are a key prediction of Inflation as they can only be produced by gravitational waves in the very early universe. To achieve this goal, QUBIC will use bolometric interferometry, a technique that combines the sensitivity of an imager with the immunity to systematic effects of an interferometer. It will directly observe the sky through an array of back-to-back entry horns whose beams will be superimposed using a cooled quasioptical beam combiner. Images of the resulting interference fringes will be formed on two focal planes, each tiled with transition-edge sensors, cooled down to 320 mK. A dichroic filter placed between the optical combiner and the focal planes will select two frequency bands (centred at 150 GHz and 220 GHz), one frequency per focal plane. Polarization modulation will be achieved using a cold stepped half-wave plate (HWP) and polariser in front of the sky-facing horns. The full QUBIC instrument is described elsewhere1,2,3,4; in this paper we will concentrate in particular on simulations of the optical combiner (an off-axis Gregorian imager) and the feedhorn array. We model the optical performance of both the QUBIC full module and a scaled-down technological demonstrator which will be used to validate the full instrument design. Optical modelling is carried out using full vector physical optics with a combination of commercial and in-house software. In the high-frequency channel we must be careful to consider the higher-order modes that can be transmitted by the horn array. Abstract: Graphene based polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) composite films have been produced and characterized in order to investigate their piezo-resistive properties. To this purpose, a new production process has been developed, with the aim of fabricating at low cost PVDF films filled with graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs). The produced films, having a GNP content of 1.5%wt and 2% wt, have been characterized from morpholocial and chemical points of view. Moreover, their piezo-resistive properties have been investigated both in static and cyclic conditions. The produced films show a stable and repeatable response to the applied strain. A sensitivity of 15 has been measured for the PVDF/GNP film filled at 1.5% wt, corresponding to an applied strain of 1.5%.

The effect of the frequency, of the configuration, of the graphene, and SWCNT mean free paths is investigated. The scope is to predict the risk of electromagnetic interference against nearby components and devices, and to define the most critical conditions.

Abstract: A new adaptive terahertz absorbing screen providing a reflection coefficient lower than −10 dB in the frequency range 0.6–2.2 THz and with total thickness around 70 μm is proposed. The designed Salisbury screen, backed by a perfect electric conducting plate, consists of a first graphene layer as lossy sheet and two spacers made of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), separated by a tunable graphene/SiO2 laminate (GL). An electrostatic field up to 0.06 V/nm is applied across the GL in order to tune the electrical conductivity of the graphene layers, with the aim of minimizing the screen total reflection coefficient. A design procedure based on the transmission line method is proposed and a parameter sensitivity analysis of the reflection coefficient is carried out. The influence of the carrier charge mobility and of the number of graphene sheets composing the GL is investigated, considering different values of the electrostatic field in the frequency range 0.1–5 THz.

Abstract: Closed-form expressions describing the tensorial conductivity of an electrically or magnetically biased monolayer graphene are provided in order to highlight the low-gigahertz gyrotropic, shielding and sensing properties. The longitudinal and transverse (Hall) conductivities are given as explicit functions of the fundamental electromagnetic quantities, i.e. the magnetic and electric field bias, B 0 and E 0 , and the carrier charge mobility μ The developed simple expressions of the components of the electric field transmission coefficient are utilized to compute the polarization rotation angle θ and the shielding effectiveness (SE), in case of normally incident plane wave. The dependence of θ on B 0 is investigated, and the magnetic field value providing the maximum θ is found. The simulation model is applied to compute gyrotropic, SE and sensing performances of the biased graphene sheet at low-gigahertz regime. Moreover, exploiting the sensing properties of the biased graphene sheet, the measured value of θ is used to evaluate B 0 , E 0 and μ.

Abstract: Development of epoxy or epoxy-based vinyl ester composites with improved mechanical and electromagnetic properties, filled with carbon-based nanomaterials, is of crucial interest for use in aerospace applications as radar absorbing materials at radio frequency. Numerous studies have highlighted the fact that the effective functional properties of this class of polymer composites are strongly dependent on the production process, which affects the dispersion of the nanofiller in the polymer matrix and the formation of micro-sized aggregations, degrading the final properties of the composite. The assessment of the presence of nanofiller aggregation in a composite through microscopy investigations is quite inefficient in the case of large scale applications, and in general provides local information about the aggregation state of the nanofiller rather than an effective representation of the degradation of the functional properties of the composite due to the presence of the aggregates. In this paper, we investigate the mechanical, electrical, and electromagnetic properties of thermosetting polymer composites filled with graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs). Moreover, we propose a novel approach based on measurements of the dielectric permittivity of the composite in the 8–12 GHz range in order to assess the presence of nanofiller aggregates and to estimate their average size and dimensions., Raman and DMTA measurements were undertaken in the Characterization Service of the Institute of Polymer Science & Technology, CSIC, Madrid, Spain. Abstract: An innovative lightweight and flexible multilayered screen made by electrically doped graphene sheets laminated with thin films of polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is proposed. The shielding effectiveness (SE) of the screen is computed in the low GHz frequency range assuming that the graphene/PET multilayer is modelled as an equivalent single-layer shield having an effective conductivity. A rigorous simulation model is utilized to define the maximum frequency of applicability of the proposed approximate formulation of the SE. A SE of 40 dB is obtained in a wide frequency range, up to more than 200 GHz, with a screen consisting of 24 graphene layers electrically doped and having a total thickness of 0.69 µm.

Abstract: Graphite nanoplatelets (GNPs) are bidimensional carbon nanostructures consisting of stacks of graphene sheets, having thickness in the range from one up to a few tens of nanometers, and lateral linear dimension in the micrometer range. These nanostructures represent a good candidate to replace carbon nanotubes in composites for electromagnetic applications. This paper proposes a new model based on the Maxwell-Garnett approach to compute the effective complex permittivity of GNP-filled nanocomposites. The effect of the dimensional probabilistic distribution of the nanofiller is investigated. To this purpose, an extensive experimental characterization of the morphological and physical properties of the GNPs after synthesis is performed. The proposed model is validated by comparison with the measured effective permittivity of GNP-composites with different concentrations, and it is used for the design of radar-absorbing materials in the frequency range 1-18 GHz.

Abstract: In recent years, several studies have demonstrated the strong cytotoxicity toward bacteria of graphene-based materials, suggesting their use as antimicrobial agents. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans, the principal microbiological agent in the etiology of dental caries, of two types of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs), characterized by different thickness and lateral dimensions of the flakes. The antimicrobial properties of GNPs were valued on some plaque and saliva samples extracted from children with dental caries. Our results show that the killing effect of GNPs on S. mutans cells is both lateral size and thickness dependent. In fact, lower thickness and smaller size GNPs exhibit stronger antibacterial activity than larger and thicker ones. Scanning electron microscopy analysis revealed that GNPs interact strongly with cells. This study suggests that GNPs may be highly effective against S. mutans and therefore caries.

Abstract: Innovative multilayered screens made of laminated graphene sheets, with SiO $_{2}$ as interlayer, over a glass substrate are proposed as electrically-tunable electromagnetic shields at terahertz. The shielding effectiveness (SE) modeling is developed applying the transmission line method in a reverberating environment (i.e., with the screen surface illuminated by an infinite set of plane waves impinging with all possible propagation directions), which is of particular relevance in electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) studies. A new equivalent single layer (ESL) model of the graphene/SiO $_{2}$ laminate (GL) is also proposed in order to provide a simple computationally-efficient method for the EMC design of GL shielding configuration via numerical EM tools. The approximate model is validated by comparison with the results obtained applying the exact one. The sensitivity analysis of the SE in reverberating environment is performed in the frequency range up to several tens of terahertz with respect to: the electric field bias of the graphene sheets, affecting their chemical potential level through an electrostatic carrier doping; the relaxation time characterizing the electron transport in graphene; the thickness of the SiO $_{2}$ interlayers. Finally, the SE computed for different shielding configurations against a plane wave with normal or oblique incidence is compared with the one obtained in a reverberating environment in order to highlight the most significant differences at terahertz frequencies.

Abstract: The shielding performances of multilayer screens made of laminated graphene sheets with flexible polymeric interlayer depend on several factors such as thickness of the polymer interlayers, number of laminated graphene sheets, electron transport properties of graphene, and frequency range. Previous studies have highlighted that the frequency dependent graphene conductivity is a function of the charge carrier density, mobility and quantum scattering time, and it is strongly affected by doping and fabrication route. This paper is aimed at the analysis of the shielding performances of laminated graphene/polymer multilayers at terahertz, in order to provide insights on the optimum shield design as a function of frequency. The proposed simulation model accounts for the frequency dispersive properties of the graphene monolayer and of the polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is considered as flexible polymeric interlayer material. The optimal choice of the substrate thickness is discussed in order to achieve the maximum value of the shielding effectiveness (SE) in the terahertz frequency range. The proposed design procedure is applied to three multilayer shield configurations, which are made of different types of chemically doped graphene. The computed frequency spectra of the shielding effectiveness up to 10 THz highlight the shielding performances of the considered samples.

Abstract: In this work we investigate the shielding properties of graphene-based films, produced by spray casting deposition, which is a cost-effective technique that can be directly scaled to industrial applications. The deposition process is optimized in order to produce uniform films made of well dispersed graphene nanoplatelets (GNP), having thicknesses in the range 3–8 microns. The sheet resistance and the shielding effectiveness up to 18 GHz of films produced using GNP-suspensions at different concentrations are measured and compared with the ones of carbon nanotube (CNT)-based films, produced in the same conditions. The obtained results demonstrate the superior shielding properties of graphene-based films with respect to CNT-ones, mainly due to the bi-dimensional shape of GNPs, which contributes to minimizing the contact resistances among adjacent nanostructures. It is also demonstrated that after a thermal annealing at 250°C, the final measured shielding effectiveness of the produced GNP-film triplicates in linear scale, reaching the value of 30.6 dB.

Abstract: Terahertz communication technologies are based on the use of a frequency range from 300 GHz up to 3 THz, according to standardization and regulation activities of the IEEE 802.15 IG THz. Graphene, which is characterized by excellent electrical, thermal and mechanical properties, is an attractive choice for EMI shielding applications. New models are proposed for the analysis of the shielding effectiveness of graphene multilayer thin films in the lower THz range taking into account the frequency dependence of the electrical conductivity. Already known models are applied to estimate the optical transmittance. Moreover, transparent substrates coated by graphene multilayer sheets are simulated. The proposed modeling approach is applied to the performance analysis of graphene multilayer thin sheets in the frequency range up to 1 THz.

Abstract: Development of epoxy or epoxy-based vinyl ester composites with improved mechanical and electromagnetic properties, filled with carbon-based nanomaterials, is of crucial interest for use in aerospace applications as radar absorbing materials at radio frequency. Numerous studies have highlighted the fact that the effective functional properties of this class of polymer composites are strongly dependent on the production process, which affects the dispersion of the nanofiller in the polymer matrix and the formation of micro-sized aggregations, degrading the final properties of the composite. The assessment of the presence of nanofiller aggregation in a composite through microscopy investigations is quite inefficient in the case of large scale applications, and in general provides local information about the aggregation state of the nanofiller rather than an effective representation of the degradation of the functional properties of the composite due to the presence of the aggregates. In this paper, we investigate the mechanical, electrical, and electromagnetic properties of thermosetting polymer composites filled with graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs). Abstract: A graphene-based composite, consisting of a thermosetting polymeric matrix filled with multilayer graphene microsheets (MLGs), is developed for application in thin radar absorbing materials. An innovative simulation model is proposed for the calculation of the effective permittivity and electrical conductivity of the composite, and used for the electromagnetic design of thin radar absorbing screens. The model takes into account the effects of the MLG morphology and of the fabrication process on the effective electromagnetic properties of the composite. Experimental tests demonstrate the validity of the proposed approach and the accuracy of the developed simulation models, which allow to understand the interaction mechanism between the incident electromagnetic field radiation and the MLG-based composite. Two dielectric Salisbury screen prototypes with resonant frequency at 12 GHz or 12.5 GHz and total thickness of 1.8 mm and 1.7 mm, respectively, are fabricated and tested. The results and technique proposed represent a simple and effective approach to produce thin absorbing screens for application in stealth technology or electromagnetic interference suppression.

PRISM's main objective is to explore the distant universe, probing cosmic history from very early times until now as well as the structures, distribution of matter, and velocity flows throughout our Hubble volume. PRISM will survey the full sky in a large number of frequency bands in both intensity and polarization and will measure the absolute spectrum of sky emission more than three orders of magnitude better than COBE FIRAS. The data obtained will allow usto precisely measure the absolute sky brightness and polarization of all the components of thesky emission in the observed frequency range,separating the primordial and extragalactic components cleanly from the galactic and zodiacal light emissions.The aim of this Extended White Paper is to provide a more detailed overview of the highlightsof the new science that will be made possible by PRISM, which include: (1) the ultimategalaxy cluster survey using the Sunyaev-Zeldovich (SZ) effect, detecting approximately 106clusters extending to large redshift, including a characterization of the gas temperature ofthe brightest ones (through the relativistic corrections to the classic SZ template) as wellas a peculiar velocity survey using the kinetic SZ effect that comprises our entire Hubblevolume; (2) a detailed characterization of the properties and evolution of dusty galaxies, wherethe most of the star formation in the universe took place, the faintest population of whichconstitute the diffuse CIB (Cosmic Infrared Background); (3) a characterization of the B modes fromprimordial gravity waves generated during inflation and from gravitational lensing, as wellas the ultimate search for primordial non-Gaussianity using CMB polarization, which is lesscontaminated by foregrounds on small scales than the temperature anisotropies; (4) a searchfor distortions from a perfect blackbody spectrum, which include some nearly certain signalsand others that are more speculative but more informative; and (5) a study of the role of themagnetic field in star formation and its interaction with other components of theinterstellar medium of our Galaxy. Abstract: Graphene films are grown by chemical vapour deposition on copper layer and then transferred onto a silicon substrate, coated with silicon dioxide. The topological characterization of the produced film is performed by atomic force microscopy, and the sheet resistance is measured by applying the four-probe test method. The equivalent single conductor model is then used in order to analyze the signal propagation along a nanointerconnect made with multilayer graphene over silicon dioxide, in a wide frequency range, up to 100 GHz. The comparison of the radio-frequency performances of the nanointerconnect, modeled by using either the measured value of effective resistivity or a theoretical estimation of the p.u.l. resistance, suggests that graphene films grown by chemical vapor deposition are more suitable for application as low frequency electrical interconnections in flexible electronics, than in high-speed integrated circuits.

Abstract: The strain-dependent electrical resistance of polyvinyl ester-based composites filled with different weight fractions of graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) has been experimentally investigated. The GNP synthesis and nanocomposite fabrication process have been optimized in order to obtain highly homogeneous filler dispersion and outstanding electrical properties. The produced nanocomposites showed a low percolation threshold of 0.226 wt% and electrical conductivity of nearly 10 S m(-1) at only 4 wt% of GNPs. The piezoresistive response of thin nanocomposite laminae has been assessed by measuring the variation of the electrical resistance as a function of the flexural strain in three-point bending tests under both quasi-static monotonic and dynamic cyclic loading conditions. The obtained results showed higher strain sensitivity than traditional metal foil strain gauges or recently investigated carbon-based nanocomposite films.

Abstract: 20 pages Latex; PRISM (Polarized Radiation Imaging and Spectroscopy Mission) was proposed to ESA in response to the Call for White Papers for the definition of the L2 and L3 Missions in the ESA Science Programme. PRISM would have two instruments: (1) an imager with a 3.5m mirror (cooled to 4K for high performance in the far-infrared---that is, in the Wien part of the CMB blackbody spectrum), and (2) an Fourier Transform Spectrometer (FTS) somewhat like the COBE FIRAS instrument but over three orders of magnitude more sensitive. Highlights of the new science (beyond the obvious target of B-modes from gravity waves generated during inflation) made possible by these two instruments working in tandem include: (1) the ultimate galaxy cluster survey gathering 10e6 clusters extending to large redshift and measuring their peculiar velocities and temperatures (through the kSZ effect and relativistic corrections to the classic y-distortion spectrum, respectively) (2) a detailed investigation into the nature of the cosmic infrared background (CIB) consisting of at present unresolved dusty high-z galaxies, where most of the star formation in the universe took place, (3) searching for distortions from the perfect CMB blackbody spectrum, which will probe a large number of otherwise inaccessible effects (e.g., energy release through decaying dark matter, the primordial power spectrum on very small scales where measurements today are impossible due to erasure from Silk damping and contamination from non-linear cascading of power from larger length scales). These are but a few of the highlights of the new science that will be made possible with PRISM.
