Research is presented concerning the characteristics of the growth of smooth nanocrystalline diamond thin films, at 600-degrees Centigrade, on silicon substrates during chemical vapor deposition.

A new metal-induced lateral crystallization method has been used for the formation of polycrystalline silicon with improved material characteristics. It has been possible to make a range of devices, including thin-film transistors and thermisters.

A novel way of off-centered binding has been revealed through the single-crystal X-ray structure of the complex between the minor groove binder 4',6'-diamidino-2-phenylindole and d(GGCCAATTGG). Results indicate that NH (sub)2-group does not destabilize the drug binding.

A study describing the preparation by secondary crystallization or long crystallization times of thicker walled mesoporous MCM-41 silica with improved thermal and hydrothermal stability.

Issues concerning functionalization of Si-nc by 1-undecanol (UD-OH), 1-hexadecanol (HD-OH), 1-octanol (OC-OH) and 1,12-dodecanediol (DD-(OH)2) are discussed. Si-nc react with UD-OH, HD-OH, OC-OH and DD-(OH)2 to form alcohol capped Si-nc.

Nanostructures were developed by using a scanning tunneling microscope in the near-field emission mode and hexafluoroacetylacetonate Cu (I) vinyltrimethylsilane as the precursor molecule on the Si(111) surface at 300 K. It was observed that applied electric field causes the excitation of the precursor molecule and that field strengths should be above 0.2 V per angstrom. The electron attachment to the molecule also led to the excitation of the precursor molecule. It was also discovered that the electron attachment produced flat and broad nanostructures.

Three types of seed/barrier layers with nontexture and (111) texture were used in studying the room-temperature recrystallization of electroplated copper films. Results indicate that the initial texture of the plated films plays a significant role in the self-annealing behavior such as reduction rate of sheet resistance and texture changes during self-annealing. The reduction rate of sheet resistance is also higher on the nontextured seed than in the (111) textured seed.

A statistical investigation of crystal structures from Cambridge Structural Database has been carried out. Results indicate that cyclohexanones have predictable pyramidalization of the carbonyl group.

Analysis concerning the crystal structures of substituted (Z)-1,2-diarylethenes and (Z)-1,2-diarycyclopropenes made by the Structural Correlation method and molecular mechanics calculations is presented. Dependence of the threshold rotational mechanism of (Z)-1,2-diarylvinyl on its steric environment has been discussed.

The comparison of crystal structure of pyridine-ligated high-spin Ni(II) porphyrin complex with unligated low-spin Ni(II) complex is presented. Results indicate the induction of a Ni core expansion caused by conversion to high-spin Ni(II) in nonplanar sterically encumbered porphyrins.

It is possible for MoO3 nanocrystals with a layered structure to adhere to one sliding interface as a spacer. The nanocrystals then maintain a constant sliding contact area under different loads and produce load-independent friction.

High RDX anistropy is shown in the different binding energies and optical gap narrowing for the different mutual orientations of vacancy dimers.
