Abstract In this paper, Quasinormal modes of gravitational perturbation are investigated for the regular Bardeen black hole surrounded by quintessence. Considering the metric of the Bardeen spacetime surrounded by quintessence, we derived the perturbation equation for gravitational perturbation using Regge-Wheeler gauge. The third order Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin (WKB) approximation method is used to evaluate quasinormal frequencies. Explicitly, the behaviors of the black hole potential and quasinormal modes were plotted. The results show that, due to the presence of quintessence, the gravitational perturbation around the black hole damps more slowly and oscillates more slowly.

Alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency is an autosomal, codominant disorder caused by mutations of the SERPINA1 gene. This genetic disorder is mainly associated with development of pulmonary emphysema and/or chronic liver disease and cirrhosis.Here we report a very rare alpha-1 antitrypsin Null Q0cairo homozygous mutation characterized by a complete absence of alpha-1 antitrypsin in the plasma, in a non-consanguineous Moroccan family. This mutation has been previously described in heterozygosis in only three cases worldwide: an Italian/Egyptian family and two Italian families (Zorzetto et al., 2005). The main clinical features in two members of this Moroccan family were the severity and precocity of bronchiectasis, quickly spreading and seriously limiting respiratory function and physical activity by the second decade of age. Moreover, the index case presented with many episodes of pulmonary infections concomitant with severe neutropenia. The third member of the family presented with ankylosing spondyloarthritis and developed panniculitis later but had no respiratory symptoms.The presence of this alpha-1-antitrypsin Q0cairo homozygous mutation could explain the severity of clinical manifestations. Moreover, our observations highlight a great variability of clinical expression for the same mutation: early severe bronchiectasis, panniculitis, rheumatologic manifestations. This study further underlines the importance of genotyping by whole SERPINA1 gene sequencing in addition to serum alpha-1 antitrypsin determination, to enable detection of alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency due to rare genotypes. Mitochondria play key roles in ATP supply, calcium homeostasis, redox balance control and apoptosis, which in neurons are fundamental for neurotransmission and to allow synaptic plasticity. Their functional integrity is maintained by mitostasis, a process that involves mitochondrial transport, anchoring, fusion and fission processes regulated by different signaling pathways but mainly by the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-γ coactivator-1α (PGC-1α). PGC-1α also favors Ca2+ homeostasis, reduces oxidative stress, modulates inflammatory processes and mobilizes mitochondria to where they are needed. To achieve their functions, mitochondria are tightly connected to the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) through specialized structures of the ER termed mitochondria-associated membranes (MAMs), which facilitate the communication between these two organelles mainly to aim Ca2+ buffering. Alterations in mitochondrial activity enhance reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, disturbing the physiological metabolism and causing cell damage. Furthermore, cytosolic Ca2+ overload results in an increase in mitochondrial Ca2+, resulting in mitochondrial dysfunction and the induction of mitochondrial permeability transition pore (mPTP) opening, leading to mitochondrial swelling and cell death through apoptosis as demonstrated in several neuropathologies. In summary, mitochondrial homeostasis is critical to maintain neuronal function; in fact, their regulation aims to improve neuronal viability and to protect against aging and neurodegenerative diseases.

Light plays an essential role in photosynthesis; however, its excess can cause damage to cellular components. Photosynthetic organisms thus developed a set of photoprotective mechanisms (e.g., non-photochemical quenching, photoinhibition) that can be studied by a classic biochemical and biophysical methods in cell suspension. Here, we combined these bulk methods with single-cell identification of microdomains in thylakoid membrane during high-light (HL) stress. We used Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 cells with YFP tagged photosystem I. The single-cell data pointed to a three-phase response of cells to acute HL stress. We defined: (1) fast response phase (0–30 min), (2) intermediate phase (30–120 min), and (3) slow acclimation phase (120–360 min). During the first phase, cyanobacterial cells activated photoprotective mechanisms such as photoinhibition and non-photochemical quenching. Later on (during the second phase), we temporarily observed functional decoupling of phycobilisomes and sustained monomerization of photosystem II dimer. Simultaneously, cells also initiated accumulation of carotenoids, especially ɣ–carotene, the main precursor of all carotenoids. In the last phase, in addition to ɣ-carotene, we also observed accumulation of myxoxanthophyll and more even spatial distribution of photosystems and phycobilisomes between microdomains. We suggest that the overall carotenoid increase during HL stress could be involved either in the direct photoprotection (e.g., in ROS scavenging) and/or could play an additional role in maintaining optimal distribution of photosystems in thylakoid membrane to attain efficient photoprotection.

Summary: We investigated the role of commensals at the peak of infection with the colonic mouse pathogen Citrobacter rodentium. Bioluminescent and kanamycin (Kan)-resistant C. rodentium persisted avirulently in the cecal lumen of mice continuously treated with Kan. A single Kan treatment was sufficient to displace C. rodentium from the colonic mucosa, a phenomenon not observed following treatment with vancomycin (Van) or metronidazole (Met). Kan, Van, and Met induce distinct dysbiosis, suggesting C. rodentium relies on specific commensals for colonic colonization. Expression of the master virulence regulator ler is induced in germ-free mice, yet C. rodentium is only seen in the cecal lumen. Moreover, in conventional mice, a single Kan treatment was sufficient to displace C. rodentium constitutively expressing Ler from the colonic mucosa. These results show that expression of virulence genes is not sufficient for colonization of the colonic mucosa and that commensals are essential for a physiological infection course. : A/E pathogens intimately adhere to the gut mucosa. Mullineaux-Sanders et al. demonstrate that inducing specific dysbiosis at the peak of murine infection with Citrobacter rodentium prevents mucosal colonization. This occurs via a mechanism independent of virulence gene expression modulation, indicating that enteric pathogens may rely on commensals for effective infection. Abstract The study focuses on the evaluation of global solar radiation on a horizontal level. The estimate of the solar layer was made on the basis of mathematical model obtained from the relations of Angstrom–Prescott, Allen and Sabbagh. The different proposed models have been implemented by using MATLAB and Excel. The models were evaluated using MPE, NSE, RMSE and MBE. The outcome of this shows that the Angstrom–Prescott model is the most suitable for the calculation of global solar radiation in the sites of Mongo with values of 5.887 kWh/m2. For the site of Bokoro, the Allen model is the most adapted for the calculation of global solar radiation which is 5.872 kWh/m2. On the other hand, the Sabbagh model is appropriate for the sites of Abeche, N’Djamena, Ati and Moussoro with respective values of 6.354, 5.742, 5.523 and 6.126 kWh/m2. The obtained results show that the Sahelian zone of Chad has a good solar potential and consequently suitable for the exploitation of solar energy systems.

The tropical forests of Western Equatorial Africa are home to extraordinary biodiversity, including sympatric chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes troglodytes) and western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla). The region is also comprised of significant stands of Intact Forest Landscapes (IFL) that are in rapid decline. As part of a regional monitoring effort, we partnered with local government officials, conservation NGOs, and the timber company working in the region to assess ape abundances in relation to habitat characteristics and anthropogenic disturbances and compare IFL and non-IFL areas in the Sangha Trinational landscape, Republic of Congo. We found that chimpanzees and gorillas occur at high densities in IFL, as well as non-IFL. To better understand how selective logging changes floristic factors, we compared herb and tree densities from botanical surveys conducted in IFL and non-IFL. IFL had higher tree stem densities and less terrestrial herbs than logged habitats. However, few ape resources were logged in this extraction cycle and areas with tree stems removed subsequently had higher abundances of terrestrial herbs preferred by apes, which may contribute to the elevated ape abundance estimates. Floristic differences in logged forest were identified to coincide with differences in ape resource use. The chimpanzee tree nesting niche was reduced in non-IFL as night nests were constructed significantly closer to the ground than in IFL. Whereas, gorilla nest height locations did not differ significantly between IFL and non-IFL. To identify other potential anthropogenic impacts, we assessed direct and indirect impacts of road expansion and illegal hunting on wildlife in these remote areas. Increased access to IFL that facilitates illegal hunting raises concern for protecting wildlife across Western Equatorial Africa. We urge that the results of biodiversity assessments and strategic aspects of long-term protection should be taken into account when identifying conservation set-asides and maintaining diverse states of modified forests. Finally, the results of our monitoring efforts are provided as evidence of the value of long-term collaborations among local stakeholders, government officials, conservation agencies, and industrial partners to improve the implementation of certification standards and biodiversity conservation initiatives.

Resistin promotes hypothalamic neuroinflammation and insulin resistance through Toll like receptor 4 (TLR4), this hormone is thought to be a link between obesity and insulin-resistance. Indeed, resistin plasma levels are higher in obese and insulin resistant subjects. However, the impact of maternal resistin on the predisposition of offspring to hypothalamic neuroinflammation is unknown. Here, female mice were treated with resistin during gestation/lactation periods, then hypothalamic neuroinflammation was investigated in male offspring at p28 and p90. At p28, resistin increased the expression of inflammation markers (IL6, TNFα and NFκB) and TLR4 in the hypothalamus and decreased both hypothalamic insulin and leptin receptors' expression. The hypothalamic up-regulation IL6, TNFα and TLR4 was sustained until p90 promoting most likely hypothalamic inflammation. Maternal resistin also increased IL6 and TNFα in the adipose tissue of offspring at p90 associated with a higher body weight gain. In contrast, liver and muscle were not affected. These findings reveal that the augmentation of maternal resistin during gestation and lactation promotes hypothalamic and adipose tissue inflammation of offspring as evidenced by sustained increase of inflammation markers from weaning to adulthood. Thus, maternal resistin programs offspring hypothalamic and adipose tissue inflammation predisposing then offspring to body weight gain.
