Robustness, the ability of a system to function correctly in the presence of both internal and external uncertainty, has emerged as a key organising principle in many biological systems. Biological robustness has thus become a major focus of research in Systems Biology, particularly on the engineering-biology interface, since the concept of robustness was first rigorously defined in the context of engineering control systems. This review focuses on one particularly important aspect of robustness in Systems Biology, that is, the use of robustness analysis methods for the validation or invalidation of models of biological systems. With the explosive growth in quantitative modelling brought about by Systems Biology, the problem of validating, invalidating and discriminating between competing models of a biological system has become an increasingly important one. In this review, the authors provide a comprehensive overview of the tools and methods that are available for this task, and illustrate the wide range of biological systems to which this approach has been successfully applied. Within a more general study on marine sediments in the Gulf of Palermo (Sicily, Italy), the 210Pbex dating method (using a model with constant sedimentation rate) has been applied to one sediment core. The main goal of the research was to study the Pb pollution chronology. Dating of the core has allowed evaluating the time evolution of the gulf lead concentrations. Specific activities of 137Cs have also been measured in the sediment core sections as an independent confirmation of the chronology derived by the 210Pbex method. The time scale has then been used to correlate lead concentrations in core sections to estimated lead emissions in air due to gasoline combustion. PURPOSE: To determine the long-term effects of a low fat intervention on sugar content in school lunches METHODS: We calculated contributions of total sugars, 6 specific sugars, and selected nutrients in National School Lunch Program meals served in 56 former intervention, 20 randomly selected control schools that had participated 3 years before in a low fat intervention, and 12 additional schools from neighboring school districts that had never been exposed to the intervention, whose goal was the lowering of total fat to under 30% of calories and saturated fat to under 10% calories. Analysis of variance adjusted for region was used to compare treatment groups. Pearson partial correlations controlling for the effects of region and treatment group were used to assess the strength of sugar and fat relationships. RESULTS: Three years after the low fat intervention, former intervention, control and unexposed schools lunches were similar in mean total sugars (25% of calories), and 'added' sugars (e.g. sucrose, glucose, galactose, and maltose) at 15% of calories; and differed only in their lactose content. As percent of calories from fat or saturated fat in lunches decreased, that from sugars increased. Lunches that met reduced saturated fat goals were significantly higher than those not meeting goals in percent of calories from sugars both in meals as offered (27.6 +/- 0.3% vs. 26.2 +/- 0.3 SE p =.004) and as served (26.5 +/- 0.4 vs. 23.9 +/- 0.4 p =.009). Lunches meeting reduced total fat goals were significantly higher only in percent of calories from sugars as served. Seventy-five percent of total sugar in lunches offered was from chocolate milk, fruit/fruit juices, and white milk. More 'added' sugar came from high micronutrient foods, such as fruit, fruit juices, and chocolate milk than from desserts and entrees. CONCLUSIONS: The existence of a fat-sugar 'see-saw' makes it important to emphasize substitutions of fat and saturated fat with starches and fiber in school lunches. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Studies comparing intraabdominal abscess (IAA) rates following laparoscopic appendectomy (LA) and open appendectomy (OA) have shown conflicting results. Methods: The charts of 324 children undergoing appendectomy were reviewed retrospectively to examine the incidence of IAA. Results: Of the 324 appendectomies, 204 (63.0%) were completed laparoscopically and 119 (36.7%) were performed open. The conversion rate was 0.2% (1/324). Of the 15 (4.6%) IAAs, 7 occurred in the LA group (3.4%) and 8 occurred in the OA group (6.7%) [p = not significant (NS)]. The incidence of IAA for perforated appendicitis for LA was 15% (7/46) and that for OA was 10% (7/70) (p = NS). Conclusion: This study demonstrates no statistically significant difference in the rate of IAA among children following LA and OA. An integrated methodology is proposed for the design of polluted water control systems for road infrastructures, based on hazard analysis concepts. The case of a simultaneous rainstorm and road accident with the dispersion of dangerous substances is considered. The risk function is computed with regard to the objective evaluation of severity of the event and to the stochastic calculation of the associate probability. A logical framework for the evaluation of severity is proposed by taking into consideration four possible circumstances for the dispersion of pollutants: surface and ground water, and natural and urban soil. A set of check lists have been devised for the assessment and design of the environmental protection control systems. The methodological approach is completed with the formulation of a stochastic model representing the statistical combination of the occurrence of the hydrological processes and the road accident dynamics. The stochastic model estimates the expected volume of contaminated rainfall for any defined probability of occurrence of the polluting event, i.e., return time of the hazard, in a coherent statistical setting. The proposed integrated methodology has been applied to a real case presently under construction: the Salerno–Reggio Calabria Highway located in Southern Italy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

13C CP MAS NMR spectroscopy was used to characterize the structural changes of cell wall polymers in beech wood Fagus sylvatica during drying processes. The analysis of five wood samples, namely, untreated, untreated dried, pre-treated by steam and/or NaOH subjected to drying showed partial depolymerization of lignin component as well as the change of the ratio of the crystalline and of the amorphous parts of cellulose as the consequence of wood pre-treatment. In addition, T1ρ(1H) relaxation times were determined in beech wood sample pre-treated with steam at 135 °C and the lignin isolated from this sample. The magnitudes of the relaxation times were found comparable in both samples as well as in the lignin-cellulose model compound. These unique T1ρ (1H) values indicate that spin diffusion is complete and homogeneous due to spatial proximity of spins and confirmed the formation of lignin-cellulose complex during thermal treatment of wood. Background: Nasal congestion is the predominant symptom in perennial allergic rhinitis (PAR), and it seems to be mainly related to the late-phase inflammatory events. The present pilot study aimed to evaluate the therapeutic effect exerted by fexofenadine in patients with PAR due to mite allergy. Methods: This study was a parallel, double-blind, randomized, three-arm (1:1:1), placebo-controlled study. Thirty-one subjects with PAR were enrolled and received double-blind medication: fexofenadine 120 or 180 mg, or placebo, once a day for 28 days. Results: The total symptom score was reduced by fexofenadine (both dosages) at V2 (P=0.007), whereas placebo did not modify it. Nasal congestion decreased after 1 week of treatment with fexofenadine 120 (P=0.027) and 180 (P=0.01), but not with placebo (P=NS). At V3, fexofenadine (both dosages) significantly reduced nasal congestion (P=0.011 and P=0.007, respectively), by placebo did not show any significant effect. Conclusions: This pilot study represents the first evidence of the efficacy of fexofenadine in PAR, and also the control of the nasal congestion. In this research, the diet composition and feeding selection of the Italian hare were evaluated and compared in two sites of Haute-Corse region localised in the territories of Tallone and Aleria. The present study is the first considering feeding selection of Lepus corsicanus. The considered period ranged from June to October. Quadrat method was used to assess plant frequency, while diet composition was determined by microhistological analysis of faecal pellets collected monthly. Grasses represented the basis of the diet, with frequencies around 50% in both study areas, followed by non-leguminous forbs with an incidence of 29% in Aleria and over 31% in Tallone. Leguminous forbs and shrubs complemented its diet. Poaceae resulted to be the most preferred and selected family in the diet in both sites. In the diet, we observed 79 species, but only a few of them were in percentages greater than 5%. The most utilised species in the diet were Brachypodium sylvaticum, Briza maxima, and Trifolium angustifolium in Aleria and Digitaria sanguinalis, Briza maxima, and Daucus carota in Tallone. Our study evidenced that in the considered areas, characterised also in the dry period by wide plant diversity, the Italian hare behaved as generalist. Significant differences in the diet composition and in the diversity index between the two sites showed the adaptability of the Italian hare to different habitats and the influence of the vegetation on feeding habits of the species.
