Aim. The purpose of the research is to find out the role of clinical and immunological parameters in predicting the effectiveness of additional immunotropic therapy in oxygen-dependent patients with the coronavirus disease COVID-19. Material and methods. 79 oxygen-dependent patients with COVID-19 were examined, who received additional therapy with tocilizumab according to current protocols. The patients were divided into groups: I group -- 39 patients who recovered; group II -- 40 patients with a fatal outcome of the disease. The content of ferritin (Monobind Inc., USA), interleukin (IL) IL-2 (Elabscience, USA), IL-6 (Invitrogen, Austria), monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1) (Elabscience, USA) was determined in the blood serum of patients and persons of the control group by the method of immunoenzymatic analysis. Statistical processing of the obtained data was carried out in the program Statistica 13 for Windows (StatSoft Inc., No. JPZ804I382130ARCN10-J). Results. Threshold levels of immunological parameters at different stages of observation, which have prognostic value regarding the risk of a fatal outcome of COVID-19, have been established. After 5 days of tocilizumab administration, the preservation of the indicator of the absolute number of blood lymphocytes ≤1.2 × 109/l (AUC = 0.631, p = 0.039), CRP level >67.5 mg/l (AUC = 0.670, p = 0.020), IL-2 >309.45 pg/ml (AUC = 0.761, p = 0.013), IL-6 >4.66 pg/ml (AUC = 0.871, p < 0.001) indicated a high probability of developing a fatal outcome of the disease in patients with COVID-19. The analysis of the diagnostic significance of ferritin showed the informativeness of the level of its increase as at the time of the start of observation >548.02 ng/ml (AUC = 0.718, p = 0.004) and after 5 days the application of additional immunotropic therapy >443.55 ng/ml (AUC = 0.736, p = 0.026). It has been proven that, in addition to immunological parameters, when assessing the probability of a fatal outcome of COVID-19, such clinical parameters as the presence of febrile fever at the time of the appearance of oxygen dependence (p < 0.05) and the duration of oxygen dependence at the time of additional immunotropic therapy with tocilizumab are informative (p < 0.05). Under the conditions of additional immunotropic therapy with tocilizumab more than 4 days after the onset of oxygen dependence, the probability of ineffectiveness of the specified additional treatment was significant (AUC = 0.756, p < 0.001). Conclusions. The dynamics of immunological parameters in oxygen-dependent patients with COVID-19 during additional immunotropic therapy with tocilizumab has certain features with different treatment results. When predicting the probable risk of a fatal outcome of the disease, clinical parameters are informative, namely the appearance of febrile fever during the development of oxygen dependence and the duration of oxygen dependence until the moment of tocilizumab administration, and immunological parameters, namely the level of the absolute content of lymphocytes, ferritin, CRP, IL-2, IL-6 in the blood. Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) can negatively affect different healthcare-related outcomes. Nonetheless, there is limited information about its effects on different healthcare-related outcomes. This study aimed at evaluating the outcomes of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and their predictors during the COVID-19 pandemic in Iran. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 1253 patients who had undergone CPR in the emergency wards of teaching hospitals in the west of Iran from the beginning of the first wave to the end of the third epidemic wave of COVID-19 in Iran, between February 20, 2020, and January 20, 2021. Data were collected using the National CPR Documentation Forms developed based on the Utstein Style and routinely used for all patients with cardiac arrest (CA). The SPSS (v. 20.0) program was used to analyze the data through the Chi-square, Fisher's exact, and Mann-Whitney U tests and logistic regression analysis. Results: Participants' age mean was 64.62 ± 17.54 years. Age mean among participants with COVID-19 was eight years more than other participants. Most participants were male (64.09%) and had at least one underlying disease (64.99%). The total rates of the return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) and CPR–discharge survival were respectively 15.3% and 3.8% among all participants, 20.25% and 5.17% among participants without COVID-19, and 8.96% and 2.04% among participants with COVID-19. The significant predictors of ROSC were age, affliction by COVID-19, affliction by underlying diseases, baseline rhythm, delay in epinephrine administration, and epinephrine administration time interval, while the significant predictors of CPR–discharge survival were age and baseline rhythm. Conclusions: The total rates of ROSC and CPR–discharge survival were respectively 15.3% and 3.8% among all participants. The rates of ROSC and CPR to discharge survival among patients without COVID-19 are respectively 2.26 and 2.53 times more than the rates among patients with COVID-19. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: In this study, coagulation and fibrinolysis parameters and their association with disease severity were investigated in coronavirus disease (COVID-19) patients. Materials and Methods: COVID-19 patients (n = 446) admitted to our institute between 21 February 2021 and 17 March 2022, were recruited. Clinical data and staging were collected from all patients. Blood samples were collected and analyzed for several parameters of fibrinolysis and coagulation, including alpha-2-antiplasmin(α2AP) and plasminogen, thrombin activatable fibrinolysis inhibitor (TAFI), tissue plasminogen activator (tPA), plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1), D-dimer, and fibrinogen levels. Results: The TAFI, fibrinogen, and tPA levels were significantly higher in participants who died compared to that of patients who recovered (p < 0.001). However, PAI-1, tPA, and TAFI were significantly higher in patients admitted to the ICU than those of the healthy controls (p < 0.001 for PAI-1 and tPA; p = 0.0331 for TAFI). Our results showed that stage C and D COVID-19 patients had significantly higher levels of PAI-1 (p = 0.003). Furthermore, stage D COVID-19 patients had significantly higher tPA and TAFI values (p = 0.003). Conclusions: Hypofibrinolysis was the most prevalent condition among patients with severe COVID-19. Infectious disease transmission can be greatly influenced by human mobility. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the Chinese Government implemented travel restriction policies to mitigate the impact of the disease or even block the transmission chain of it. In order to quantify the impact of these policies on the number of infections and the peak time of transmission, this research modified the traditional SIR model by considering human mobility. The proposed model was validated using a Baidu Qianxi dataset and the results indicate that the number of total infections would have increased by 1.61 to 2.69 times the current value and the peak time would have moved forward by 3 to 8 days if there were no such restriction policies. Furthermore, a mixing index α added in the proposed model showed that the proportion of residents using public transport to travel between different areas had a positive relationship with the number of infections and the duration of the epidemic. The COVID-19 vaccine development timelines offered a unique opportunity to explore the public's vaccine intention in an unusual situation characterised by great uncertainty about the vaccine's features and the disease it intended to prevent. To advance our knowledge of vaccine intention mechanisms under these unusual circumstances, to plan effective vaccination strategies, and to better direct communication efforts in similar scenarios, this study explored i) COVID19-related information needs, information-seeking behaviours, and perceived trustworthiness of news media; ii) COVID-19 vaccination intention and its determinants, during the first wave of COVID-19 pandemic in Italy. In particular, it was investigated whether and to what extent the perception of severity and susceptibility to the infection, trust in authorities, and demographics shaped people's vaccine intention. Between April and May 2020 in a cross-sectional study, 1373 Italian participants completed an online survey measuring demographic features, perception of the disease severity, disease risk perception, COVID19-related worry, disease-related information needs and behaviours, vaccination intention, and level of trust in authorities and news media. The leading information needs were the COVID-19 incubation period and transmission modalities, with the majority of people actively looking for information from one to three times a day. Despite uncertainty around the details of a COVID-19 vaccination, 68% of participants reported intending to be vaccinated for COVID-19. Greater COVID-19 vaccination intention was associated with having a regular history of seasonal flu vaccine, a greater COVID19-related worry, a higher perception of disease severity, and a higher trust in the Government. These findings further our understanding of vaccine intention in a pandemic scenario where a vaccine is still hypothetical and provide valuable information on the public's representation of the infection and future acceptance of a vaccine to inform the development of communication interventions aiming to maximise adherence to vaccination programmes and to modify disease-related dysfunctional representations. A novel surface plasmon resonance-based biosensor for SARS-CoV-2 virus is proposed in this article. The biosensor is a Kretschmann configuration-based structure that consists of CaF2 prism as base, at which silver (Ag), TiO2, and MXene nanolayers are used to enhance the performance. Theoretically, the performance parameters have been investigated by means of Fresnel equations and transfer matrix method (TMM). The TiO2 nanolayer not only prevents oxidation of Ag layer but also enhances the evanescent field in its vicinity. The sensor provides an ultrahigh angular sensitivity of 346°/RIU for the detection of SARS-CoV-2 virus. Some other performance parameters, including FWHM (full width at half maxima), detection accuracy (DA), limit of detection (LOD), and quality factor (QF) have also been calculated for proposed SPR biosensor with their optimized values 2.907°, 0.3439 deg−1, 1.445 × 10−5, and 118.99 RIU−1, respectively. The obtained results designate that the proposed surface plasmon resonance (SPR) based biosensor has notably enhanced angular sensitivity as compared to previous results reported in the literatures till date. The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic continues to present unique challenges to governments and organisations around the world, but one sector has incorporated COVID-19 into its core mission with relative ease: advertisers have acknowledged the pandemic while continuing to draw on notions of 'normality' to activate our desire to consume. As the UK's series of lockdowns have come to an end, we look back over more than a year of unusual advertising and consider how the pandemic has changed approaches to marketing and the shape of consumer culture in ways connected to ideas about what constitutes 'normal' life. Discussions of the relationship between the pandemic and consumerism have included critiques of the prioritising of profit over people, and conceptualisations of Coronavirus as a brand itself, but the politics of notions of 'normality' promoted by consumer culture demand closer consideration. This article complements existing studies and debates by examining the tensions, contradictions and morally neutral positions revealed by the advertising response to the coronavirus disease pandemic. Through an analysis of UK advertising campaigns launched during and with reference to the pandemic, this work explores key themes and strategies, including their connection to power dynamics concerning race, gender, class and capitalism. We suggest advertising during crises may offer the opportunity to critique larger dynamics and trends of consumerism, including narrow notions of the defining features of 'everyday' life. • Visitation for COVID-19 patients can be done safely throughout the hospital and there is a positive impact on patient wellbeing with increased visitor access. • Delays in seeking care based upon restrictive visitor policies could have the potential to result in worsened patient outcomes. • 98% of patients reported that the presence of visitors during their hospitalization improved their wellbeing. • The gap in patient satisfaction grew wider as the hospital length of stay increased. • As we move towards COVID-19 endemicity, implementing evidence-based visitation policies that maximize patient wellbeing will be essential. The COVID-19 pandemic presented unique and unprecedented challenges due to limited knowledge regarding the virus's transmissibility. With guidance from the Center for Disease Control (CDC), healthcare systems instituted widespread visitor restrictions. Hospitalization is a stressful time for patients. Visitor support can help minimize this during and after discharge. A telephone interview was conducted among hospitalized COVID-19 positive patients discharged between March 1st and August 31st, 2021 to explore the patients and visitors' experiences and the impact of the visitor policy during their hospitalization. A total of 238 patients were interviewed. For patients with visitors, 98% felt that the presence of visitors improved their overall wellbeing and satisfaction. Additionally, 86% reported that visitors were involved in helping with their care upon discharge. For patients with no visitors, 59% felt that having a visitor would have improved their hospital stay. Nearly 50% reported that the absence of visitors made it difficult for family members to remain updated and informed of their hospital care. This study demonstrates that visitation for COVID-19 patients can be done safely and that there is a positive impact on patient wellbeing with increased visitor access. This paper considers the features of the development of the coronavirus pandemic in various countries within the framework of the predator–prey system under the external modulating effect of solar activity. It is discussed that under conditions of a global minimum of solar activity, the genetic composition of the population turned out to be the main factor of the difference in the dynamics of local SARS-Cov-2 epidemics. Countries with the highest relative mortality from coronavirus had a dominant population with haplogroup R1b. The coincidence of the dynamics of morbidity and mortality in countries with similar genetic composition, regardless of the introduction or absence of lockdown on their territory, is shown. The occurrence of self-oscillating waves in small countries with a strict lockdown in the first wave of the pandemic was revealed, which led to a significant increase in the number of victims in subsequent waves. It is discussed that for countries with haplogroup R1b, universal vaccination has reduced the level of relative mortality by 5 to 8 times. However, for countries with haplogroup N and R1a + N, by mid-2022, relative mortality increased 2 to 4 times compared to 2020. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Although vaccines have been shown to reduce the number of COVID-19 infection cases significantly, vaccine-related reactions, long COVID-19 syndrome, and COVID-19 infection following vaccination continue to be a burden on healthcare services and warrant further scientific research. The purpose of this study was to research the severity of pulmonary COVID-19 infection following vaccination and the sequelae rates of recurrent infections in vaccinated cases by imaging. Patients who underwent follow-up CTs at 1 month, 3 months, and 6 months in our hospital with a diagnosis of COVID-19 were scanned retrospectively. Furthermore, all essential information was gathered from patients' immunization records. The major findings of our study were: (1) sequelae were frequently observed in unvaccinated cases; (2) the correlation between vaccination status and the severity of sequelae was significant; (3) there was not any significant relationship between the vaccine type and the severity of sequelae; and (4) hematocrit, hemoglobin, and lymphocyte parameters may be used as predictors of sequelae rates. COVID-19 infection, although reduced in prevalence following the development of vaccines, still remains a public health concern because of reinfection. Rationale: Mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) may modulate inflammation, promoting repair in coronavirus disease (COVID-19)–related acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Objectives: We investigated the safety and efficacy of ORBCEL-C (CD362 [cluster of differentiation 362]–enriched, umbilical cord–derived MSCs) in COVID-19–related ARDS. Methods: In this multicenter, randomized, double-blind, allocation-concealed, placebo-controlled trial (NCT 03042143), patients with moderate to severe COVID-19–related ARDS were randomized to receive ORBCEL-C (400 million cells) or placebo (Plasma-Lyte 148). The primary safety and efficacy outcomes were the incidence of serious adverse events and oxygenation index at Day 7, respectively. Secondary outcomes included respiratory compliance, driving pressure, PaO2:FiO2 ratio, and Sequential Organ Failure Assessment score. Clinical outcomes relating to duration of ventilation, lengths of ICU and hospital stays, and mortality were collected. Long-term follow-up included diagnosis of interstitial lung disease at 1 year and significant medical events and mortality at 2 years. Transcriptomic analysis was performed on whole blood at Days 0, 4, and 7. Measurements and Main Results: Sixty participants were recruited (final analysis: n = 30 received ORBCEL-C, n = 29 received placebo; 1 participant in the placebo group withdrew consent). Six serious adverse events occurred in the ORBCEL-C group and three in the placebo group (risk ratio, 2.9 [95% confidence interval, 0.6–13.2]; P = 0.25). Day 7 mean (SD) oxygenation index did not differ (ORBCEL-C, 98.3 [57.2] cm H2O/kPa; placebo, 96.6 [67.3] cm H2O/kPa). There were no differences in secondary surrogate outcomes or in mortality at Day 28, Day 90, 1 year, or 2 years. There was no difference in the prevalence of interstitial lung disease at 1 year or significant medical events up to 2 years. ORBCEL-C modulated the peripheral blood transcriptome. Purpose: To evaluate using quantitative analysis on chest CT images a possible lung volume reduction in Long COVID patients who complain mild respiratory symptoms, with chest CT negative for inflammatory findings. Materials and Methods: CT images of patients from 18 to 40 years old who underwent chest CT scan at our institution were analyzed retrospectively, using AwServer Thoracic VCAR software for a quantitative study. Exclusion criteria were inflammatory findings at CT, previous lung surgery, lung cancer, and breath artifacts that invalidate the quality of images. Patients were divided into two groups: in the first one ("post-COVID") were patients who had previous SARS-CoV-2 infection, confirmed by an RT-PCR, who underwent chest CT from 3 to 6 months after their negativization for long COVID symptoms; in the control group ("non-COVID"), were enrolled patients who underwent a chest CT scan from January 2018 to December 2019, before the spread of COVID in Italy. Results: Our final population included 154 TC, 77 post-COVID patients (mean age 33 ± 6) and 77 non-COVID patients (mean age 33 ± 4.9). Non statistical significative differences were obtained between groups in terms of age, sex, and other characteristics that affect total lung capacity such as obesity, thoracic malformations, and smoking habit. Mean values of the total lung volume (TV), right-lung volume (RV), and left-lung volume (LV) in the post-COVID group compared with non-COVID group were, respectively: 5.25 ± 0.25 L vs. 5.72 ± 0.26 L (p = 0.01); 2.76 ± 0.14 L vs. 3 ± 0.14 L (p = 0.01); 2.48 ± 0.12 L vs. 2.72 ± 0.12 L (p = 0.01). Conclusion: In patients with symptoms suggesting Long COVID and negative chest CT macroscopic findings, quantitative volume analysis demonstrated a mean value of reduction in lung volume of 10% compared to patients of the same age who never had COVID. A chest CT negative for inflammatory findings may induce clinicians to attribute Long COVID mild respiratory symptoms to anxiety, especially in young patients. Our study brings us beyond appearances and beyond the classic radiological signs, introducing a quantitative evaluation of lung volumes in these patients. It is hard to establish to what extent this finding may contribute to Long COVID symptoms, but this is another step to gain a wider knowledge of the potential long-term effects caused by this new virus. In this research work, coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been considered to help mankind survive the present-day pandemic. This research is helpful to monitor the patients newly infected by the virus, and patients who have already recovered from the disease, and also to study the flow of virus from similar health issues. In this paper, an internet of things (IoT) framework has been developed for the early detection of suspected cases. This framework is used for collecting and uploading symptoms (data) through sensor devices to the physician, data analytics center, cloud, and isolation/health centers. The symptoms of the first wave, second wave, and omicron are used to identify the suspects. Five machine learning algorithms which are considered to be the best in the existing literature have been used to find the best machine learning classifier in this research work. The proposed framework is used for the rapid detection of COVID-19 cases from real-world COVID-19 symptoms to mitigate the spread in society. This model also monitors the affected patient who has undergone treatment and recovered. Background and objectivesCOVID-19 has emerged as a public health emergency caused by the coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV2). However, only a few studies have reported that anosmia is an early predictor of COVID-19. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the current level of knowledge regarding smell dysfunction in COVID-19 era in Saudi community.Materials and methodsAn online survey was conducted using Survey Monkeys in Saudi Arabia. The survey was distributed through Twitter and WhatsApp. The questionnaire included individuals’ demographic information, such as sex, age, residence, income, and qualifications, as well as their knowledge of the early symptoms of COVID-19. ANOVA and Mann–Whitney U-test were conducted to analyze the data. There were twelve items on knowledge dimensions which were assessed through five-point Likert scale.ResultsIn total, 809 respondents completed the questionnaire. Among them, 658 (81.3%) had no knowledge of how sudden loss of or change in the sense of smell can be the only symptom of COVID-19. However, most participants, 738 (91.2%), knew that fever was a symptom of COVID-19. Similarly, 707 (87.4%) and 772 (95.5%) participants knew that cough and shortness of breath were the major symptoms of COVID-19, respectively. In addition, 395 (48.3%) participants had no information regarding taste changes as a symptom of COVID-19. Notably, participants who were female, married, or diagnosed with COVID-19 had significantly greater knowledge of smell-related issues due to COVID-19 than males, unmarried, and healthy/those without COVID-19.ConclusionThis study revealed that the Saudi population has an fairly good level of knowledge regarding common COVID-19 symptoms as more than 90% of the participants understood symptoms of COVID-19, but less acceptable knowledge regarding smell and taste dysfunction as more than 80% had no knowledge of change in olfactory and taste function was due to COVID-19.

This study aimed to compare the changes in psychological status and cortisol level between multiple sclerosis (MS) patients and a healthy control group (HC). One hundred and fifty-five MS patients and 165 HC subjects had completed questionnaires consisting of 36-Item short health survey (SF-36), Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAM-A), Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), and fatigue severity score (FSS) before and after (one year from onset) COVID-19 pandemic. The salivary cortisol level was also measured again in 26 MS patients and 14 control individuals. MS patients had lower scores of mental and physical components of quality of life (MCS and PCS), but higher HAM-A, FSS, and BDII scores than HC Before and after COVID-19. There were significant changes in scores of MCS, BDI-II, HAM-A, and FSS after the COVID-19 outbreak in MS patients, but not in PCS score. In HC group, we observed significant changes in scores of MCS, BDI-II, and FSS, but not in scores of PCS and HAM-A. Compared to HC, the MS patients reported greater deterioration in the overall mental health component of their health-related quality of life, and their levels of anxiety and fatigue over the study period. Background: The prevalence of coronavirus disease is increasing rapidly all over the world therefore, this study aimed to understand the knowledge and attitudes among the nursing students about the coronavirus disease. Methods: The design of our study was cross-sectional in the period from January to March, 2020. A survey was conducted by Survey Monkey, the questionnaire link had been shared with the students, according to the inclusion criteria (nursing students in the third and fourth year), the questionnaire included two parts: (i) demographic characteristics of the students and (ii) knowledge and attitudes regarding the coronavirus disease. The number of participants in the study, who completed the questionnaire, was 350. Results: The findings revealed that the average score for their knowledge is good, (13/17 points) reaching 79%. Total 77% students showed a negative attitude about the coronavirus disease and 79.7% students used the website of Ministry of Health for medical information. Conclusion: This study showed that nursing students had a good knowledge about the coronavirus disease and a negative attitude. Introduction: The main aim of the study was to find the most common CT feature in the lungs of patients associated with Delta variant and characterize thoracic computed tomography and report mortality. Material and Methods: A total of 156 patients with suspected or confirmed COVID-19 infection were randomized in this study which their chest CTs performed at the initial positive and negative RT-PCR. There were two groups of patients involved. Results: The patients had typical imaging features such as; coagulation (33 [21.2%]), ground glass opacities (GGO) (140 [89.7%]), vascular enlargement of the lesion (41 [26.3%]). Lesions that appear on CT images are more likely to have peripheral distribution (79 [50.6%]), peripheral and central distribution (61 [39.1%]) and architectural distortion (14 [9%]. Other CT features include pleural effusion (15 [9.6 %]) and crazypaving pattern (25 [16 %]). Only two patients had tree-in-bud and traction bronchiectasis (2 [1,3%]). In contrast, the overall mortality rate was (19 [12.2%]). Conclusion: The most common CT feature was peripheral GGO (140 [89.7%]) in the lungs of patients with COVID-19. The initial positive RT-PCR group had a higher peripheral distribution, GGO, and frenzy pattern during their CT scan than patients in the group with a negative initial RT-PCR result. Mortality rates were nearly identical between groups with a positive and negative RT-PCR baseline at 10.7% and 13%, respectively. The ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has had a far-reaching impact on urban living, prompting emergency preparedness and response from public health governance at multiple levels. The Chinese government has adopted a series of policy measures to control infectious disease, for which cities are the key spatial units. This research traces and reports analyses of those policy measures and their evolution in four Chinese cities: Zhengzhou, Hangzhou, Shanghai and Chengdu. The theoretical framework stems from conceptualisations of urban governance and its role in public health emergencies, wherein crisis management and emergency response are highlighted. In all four cities, the trend curves of cumulative diagnosed cases, critical policies launched in key time nodes and local governance approaches in the first wave were identified and compared. The findings suggest that capable local leadership is indispensable for controlling the coronavirus epidemic, yet local governments' approaches are varied, contributing to dissimilar local epidemic control policy pathways and positive outcomes in the fight against COVID-19. The effectiveness of disease control is determined by how local governments' measures have adapted to geospatial and socioeconomic heterogeneity. The coordinated actions from central to local governments also reveal an efficient, top-down command transmission and execution system for coping with the pandemic. This article argues that effective control of pandemics requires both a holistic package of governance strategies and locally adaptive governance measures/processes, and concludes with proposals for both a more effective response at the local level and identification of barriers to achieving these responses within diverse subnational institutional contexts. Background Immune responses to each vaccine must be investigated to establish effective vaccination strategies for the ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. We investigated the long-term kinetics of immune responses after heterologous booster vaccination in relation to Omicron breakthrough infection (BI). Methods Our study included 373 healthcare workers who received primary ChAdOx1 vaccine doses and a third BNT162b2 vaccine dose. BIs that occurred after the third vaccine were investigated. Blood specimens were collected before and 3 months after the booster dose from participants without BI and 1, 4, and 6 months after BI from participants who experienced BI. Spike-specific binding and neutralizing antibody levels against the wild-type virus, Omicron BA.1, and Omicron BA.5, as well as cellular responses, were analyzed. Results A total of 346 participants (82 in the no BI group; 192 in the BI group during the BA.1/BA.2 period; 72 in the BI group during the BA.5 period) were included in the analysis. Participants without BI exhibited the highest binding and neutralizing antibody concentrations and greatest cellular response 1 month after the third vaccination, which reached a nadir by the ninth month. Antibody and cellular responses in participants who experienced BI substantially increased postinfection. Neutralizing antibody titers in individuals who experienced BI during the BA.1/BA.2 period showed more robust increase against wild-type virus than against BA.1 and BA.5. Conclusions Our findings provide evidence of antigenic imprinting in participants who received a heterologous booster vaccination, thereby serving as a foundation for further studies on the impact of BIs on immune responses. The COVID-19 survivors are at high risk of meeting the criteria for depression. However, few studies have explored its prevalence and associated factors. The study aimed to know the frequency and variables associated with depression among COVID-19 survivors in Santa Marta, Colombia. A sample of COVID-19 survivors was included. Depression was quantified with the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9, α = 0.85). Three hundred and thirty survivors participated in the research. They were aged between 18 and 89 years, 61.5% were women, and 49.7% of participants scored above the cut-off point for depression. Depression was associated with female gender, younger age, COVID moderate or severe, and having presented symptoms for more than three weeks. In conclusion, depression occurs in half of the COVID-19 survivors and is higher in younger, women and who report more severe symptoms. Longitudinal studies can provide further information on the long-term impact on the mental health of COVID-19 survivors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Surgical smoke is a vaporous by-product generated during tissue incision and cauterization with an electric scalpel. This smoke contains tissue- and blood/vascular-derived substances, bacteria, viruses, and chemical substances. Among them, it contains many fine particles called particulate matter (PM) 2.5, which are harmful and hazardous to the human body. We aimed to investigate the occurrence of PM2.5 in surgical smoke produced during spinal surgery and to evaluate the efficacy of an electric scalpel with a smoke evacuation pencil. In this retrospective observational study, 89 patients who underwent spinal surgery between June 2019 and May 2021 were included. A dust monitor was installed in the operating room to measure the PM2.5 air concentration during the surgery. During each surgery, the total amount of PM2.5, the maximum PM2.5 air concentration, the exposure time to PM2.5, and the average value of PM2.5 air concentration from the start to the end of the surgery were calculated. We found that in 29 of the 89 cases (32.6%), the air concentration of PM2.5 increased to a level that could cause health damage during the surgery. Twelve cases (13.4%) reached the level that could cause serious health damage, and 8 cases (9%) reached an emergency warning level. The total amount and the maximum and average levels of PM2.5 were significantly suppressed in the surgery with a smoke evacuation pencil group than in the surgery without a smoke evacuation pencil group. We detected hazardous levels of PM2.5 in the air during spinal surgery, highlighting the importance of considering smoke control or reduction during spinal surgery. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to find the association between serum Krebs von den Lungen-6 (KL-6) and the severity of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection. DATA SOURCES: Databases of Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, Science Direct, and Google Scholar were searched for studies reporting KL- 6 levels in COVID-19 patients, published between January 2020 and September 30 2022. DATA SYNTHESIS: For comparison between the groups, standard mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) were computed as the effect sizes. Sensitivity, specificity, positive likelihood ratio (PLR), and negative likelihood ratio (NLR) were measured to assess the diagnostic power of KL-6. In addition, the summary receiver operating characteristics curve (sROC) was constructed to summarize the true positive (TP), and false positive (FP) rates. To validate the findings of meta-analysis, Trial Sequential Analysis (TSA) was conducted. RESULTS: Altogether 497 severe COVID-19 patients and 934 non-severe (mild to moderate) COVID-19 patients were included. Pooling of 12 studies indicated that the serum KL-6 level had significant association with severity of COVID-19 infection: standard mean difference = 1.18 (95% CI: 0.93-1.43), p = 0.01; I²: 58.56%]. Pooled diagnostic parameters calculated from eight studies were: sensitivity 0.53 (95% CI: 0.47-0.59); specificity 0.90 (95% CI: 0.88-0.93); positive likelihood ratio 4.80 (95% CI: 3.53-6.53); negative likelihood ratio 0.46 (95% CI: 0.32-0.68); and area under curve: 0.8841. Additionally, TSA verified the adequacy of sample size and robustness of the meta-analysis. CONCLUSION: Serum KL-6 level has a moderate degree of correlation with the severity of COVID-19 infection but has low sensitivity. Objective: We've aimed at evaluating whether the platelet mass index (PMI) can be a prognostic marker for children diagnosed with MIS-C. Material and Methods: 31 children diagnosed with MIS-C and treated at our university hospital between March 2020 and November 2021 were included. Demographic data, clinical findings and laboratory values at the time of hospitalization, admission to the intensive care unit and duration of hospitalization were evaluated retrospectively. PMI of each patient at the time of hospitalization was calculated and recorded. Results: There was a statistically significant negative correlation between PMI and ferritin (r= -0.635, moderate, p<0.001), CRP (r= -0.377, weak, p= 0.036), and procalcitonin (r= -0.481, weak, p=0.006) levels. There was a statistically significant positive relationship between PMI and leukocyte count (r=0.367, weak, p=0.042) and lymphocyte count (r=0.384, weak, p=0.033). Median PMI values of the patients requiring intensive care (1701.35 fl/nl) were lower, compared to the median PMI values of the patients not requiring intensive care (2523.94 fl/nl), however, statistical results could not be reached due to the low (4 of 31) number of patients requiring intensive care. Median PMI values of the patients whose ferritin level was >400 ng/ml (1415.2; 533.4 -- 3600.5) were statistically lower compared to the median PMI values of the patients whose ferritin level was ≤400 ng/ml (2705.7; 1395.2 -- 9167.6). This study aimed to provide diabetes-related health information by analyzing queries posted in the diabetes-related online community required during the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of 9156 queries from the diabetes-related online community, dated between 1 December 2019 and 3 May 2022, were used in the study. The collected data were preprocessed for bidirectional encoder representation from transformer topic modeling analysis. Topics were extracted using the class-based term frequency–inverse document frequency for nouns and verbs. From the extracted verbs, words with common definitions were subject to substitution and unification processes, which enabled the identification of multifrequent verb categories by noun topics. The following nine noun topics were extracted, in this order: dietary management, drug management, gestational and childhood diabetes, management of diabetic complications, use and cost of medical treatment, blood glucose management, exercise treatment, COVID-19 vaccine and complications, and diabetes in older adults. The top three verb categories by noun topics were permission, method, and possibility. The COVID-19 pandemic has spurred transformations aimed at ensuring the effectiveness of the public health system and highlighted the need for a deeper study of the causal relationships between the parameters of healthcare system effectiveness and the national security. The aim of this study is to identify causal and temporal patterns in the impact of various types of healthcare expenditures on the components of national security. The study was conducted on a sample of 34 European countries for 2000-2021. In order to achieve the research objectives, integral indicators of economic, social, and environmental security were developed based on a complex combination of principal component analysis, Fishburn formula and additive convolution. Panel data regression modelling was employed to identify causal relationships between health care expenditures and those integral indicators. Finally, distributional-lag modelling (testing for the presence of a lag of up to 3 years) identified temporal patterns of the relationship between the indicators. Causal and temporal patterns of the relationship between health care expenditures and components of national security of the state were determined according to the modelling results. Background: The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has resulted in more than 6 million deaths worldwide since it was identified in 2019, resulting in significant morbidity and mortality. The impact of COVID-19 on the acquisition of multi-drug-resistant organisms (MDRO) remains uncertain. This study aims to investigate the effect of COVID-19 on the acquisition of MDRO in the intensive care unit (ICU). Methods: A single-center, retrospective observational study at Wollongong ICU compared the acquisition rate of MDRO, especially vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) and methicillinresistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), pre- and post-COVID. Results: There was a significant increase in MDRO incidence post-COVID compared to pre-COVID, with incidence rates increasing from 1.6% to 4.56%, especially in MRSA acquisitions, which increased from 0.91% to 5.71%. This increase was associated with a longer ICU length of stay (LOS) but did not have a significant effect on hospital LOS or mortality. The increased incidence of MDRO was potentially related to increased antibiotic use and staffing changes during the COVID period. To determine the effects of age and variants of concern on transmission of SARS-CoV-2, we analyzed infection rates among close contacts over 4 periods in Toyama Prefecture, Japan. Among household contacts, odds of infection were 6.2 times higher during the period of the Omicron variant than during previous periods, particularly among children and adolescents.

During 2022, a total of 9,515 asymptomatic healthcare workers of a large hospital in Germany underwent SARS-CoV-2 PCR screening twice weekly. Of 398,784 saliva samples, 3,555 (0.89%) were PCR positive (median cycle threshold value 30). Early identification of infected healthcare workers can help reduce SARS-CoV-2 transmission in the hospital environment.

Surveillance of COVID-19 is challenging but critical for mitigating disease, particularly if predictive of future disease burden. We report a robust multiyear lead-lag association between internet search activity for loss of smell or taste and COVID-19–associated hospitalization and deaths. These search data could help predict COVID-19 surges.

During the ongoing coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, farmworkers in the United States are considered essential personnel and continue in-person work. We conducted prospective surveillance for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and antibody prevalence among farmworkers in Salinas Valley, California, during June 15-November 30, 2020. We observed 22.1% (1,514/6,864) positivity for SARS-CoV-2 infection among farmworkers compared with 17.2% (1,255/7,305) among other adults from the same communities (risk ratio 1.29, 95% CI 1.20-1.37). In a nested study enrolling 1,115 farmworkers, prevalence of current infection was 27.7% among farmworkers reporting >1 COVID-19 symptom and 7.2% among farmworkers without symptoms (adjusted odds ratio 4.16, 95% CI 2.85-6.06). Prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 antibodies increased from 10.5% (95% CI 6.0%-18.4%) during July 16-August 31 to 21.2% (95% CI 16.6%-27.4%) during November 1-30. High SARS-CoV-2 infection prevalence among farmworkers underscores the need for vaccination and other preventive interventions.

We review the interaction between coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and coccidioidomycosis, a respiratory infection caused by inhalation of Coccidioides fungal spores in dust. We examine risk for co-infection among construction and agricultural workers, incarcerated persons, Black and Latino populations, and persons living in high dust areas. We further identify common risk factors for co-infection, including older age, diabetes, immunosuppression, racial or ethnic minority status, and smoking. Because these diseases cause similar symptoms, the COVID-19 pandemic might exacerbate delays in coccidioidomycosis diagnosis, potentially interfering with prompt administration of antifungal therapies. Finally, we examine the clinical implications of co-infection, including severe COVID-19 and reactivation of latent coccidioidomycosis. Physicians should consider coccidioidomycosis as a possible diagnosis when treating patients with respiratory symptoms. Preventive measures such as wearing face masks might mitigate exposure to dust and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, thereby protecting against both infections.

Introduction: Healthcare patterns change during disease outbreaks and pandemics. Identification of modified patterns is important for future preparedness and response. Emergency department (ED) crowding can occur because of the volume of patients waiting to be seen, which results in delays in patient assessment or treatment and impediments to leaving the ED once treatment is complete. Therefore, ED crowding has become a growing problem worldwide and represents a serious barrier to healthcare operations.Methods: This observational study was based on a retrospective review of the epidemiologic and clinical records of patients who presented to the Foundation IRCCS Policlinic San Matteo in Pavia, Italy, during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak (February 21–May 1, 2020, pandemic group). The methods involved an estimation of the changes in epidemiologic and clinical data from the annual baseline data after the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.Results: We identified reduced ED visits (180 per day in the control period vs 96 per day in the pandemic period; P < 0.001) during the COVID-19 pandemic, irrespective of age and gender, especially for low-acuity conditions. However, patients who did present to the ED were more likely to be hemodynamically unstable, exhibit abnormal vital signs, and more frequently required high-intensity care and hospitalization. During the pandemic, ED crowding dramatically increased primarily because of an increased number of visits by patients with high-acuity conditions, changes in patient management that prolonged length of stay, and increased rates of boarding, which led to the inability of patients to gain access to appropriate hospital beds within a reasonable amount of time. During the pandemic, all crowding output indices increased, especially the rates of boarding (36% vs 57%; P < 0.001), “access block” (24% vs 47%; P < 0.001), mean boarding time (640 vs 1,150 minutes [min]; P 0.001), mean “access block” time (718 vs 1,223 min; P < 0.001), and “access block” total time (650,379 vs 1,359,172 min; P < 0.001).Conclusion: Crowding in the ED during the COVID-19 pandemic was due to the inability to access hospital beds. Therefore, solutions to this lack of access are required to prevent a recurrence of crowding due to a new viral wave or epidemic.

Abstract Background The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic forced healthcare workers to use alternative consultation approaches. In general practice, the use of video consultations (VCs) increased manyfold as countries were locked down. This scoping review aimed to summarize scientific knowledge concerning the use of VC in general practice and focused on (1) the utilization of VC in general practice, (2) the experiences of the users of VC in general practice, and (3) how VC affected the clinical decision-making of general practitioners (GPs). Methods A scoping review was conducted in accordance with the methodology of Joanna Briggs Institute. Review questions were formulated to match each focus area. A three-step search strategy was employed to search scientific and gray literature sources. MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, OpenGrey, Google Scholar, and ClinicalTrials.gov were searched from 2010 to March 11th, 2021, and the search was re-run on August 18th, 2021. The extracted data were deductively coded into pre-defined main themes, whereas subthemes were inductively synthesized. The data within each subtheme were analysed through descriptive content analysis and presented in a narrative synthesis. Results Overall, 13 studies were included after screening 3,624 studies. Most patients were satisfied with VCs. VCs were most suitable for simpler issues, often shorter than face-to-face consultations, and were more likely to be used by younger patients. GPs enjoyed the flexibility and shorter duration of VCs; however, they felt an unsatisfactory deterioration in the GP-patient relationship. Despite the loss of clinical examination, diagnostic assessment was mostly successful, with little fear of missing serious illness. Prior clinical experience and a preexisting relationship with the patient were important factors for successful assessment via VC. Conclusions Both GPs and patients can be satisfied with VC in general practice in specific contexts, and adequate clinical decision-making is possible. However, disadvantages such as a diminishing GP-patient relationship have been highlighted, and the use of VC in non-pandemic settings is limited. The role of VC in the future of general practice remains unclear, and further research is needed on the long-term adoption of VC in general practice.

Abstract Digital technologies have been used to support mental health services for two decades, but the COVID-19 pandemic created a particular opportunity for greater utilization and more data-driven assessment of these digital technologies. This research aims to offer a scoping review of the characteristics and effectiveness of digital interventions that were employed to improve mental health in the real context of COVID-19 pandemic. A combination of search terms was applied for automatic search of publications in the relevant databases. The key features of included studies were extracted, including the intervention, participant, and study details. A total of 20 eligible studies were included in the final review, which were conducted across different geographic regions and among diverse cultural groups. Among them, fourteen studies mainly reported the impact of digital technologies on general population, while only one published study developed specific interventions for the isolated COVID-19 depressed patients in hospitals. Digital technologies identified in this review were mainly developed via web-based and mobile-based platforms, such as social networking and video conferencing applications. But less than half of them were aligned with theoretical approaches from standardized psychological treatments. Most of the studies have reported positive effects of digital technologies, either on improving general mental and emotional well-being or addressing specific conditions (e.g., depression, stress, and anxiety). This scoping review suggests that digital technologies hold promise in bridging the mental health-care gap during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, and calls for more rigorous studies to identify pertinent features that are likely to achieve more effective mental health outcomes.

In response to COVID-19, schools across the United States closed in early 2020; many did not fully reopen until late 2021. Although regular testing of asymptomatic students, teachers, and staff can reduce transmission risks, few school systems consistently used proactive testing to safeguard return to classrooms. Socioeconomically diverse public school districts might vary testing levels across campuses to ensure fair, effective use of limited resources. We describe a test allocation approach to reduce overall infections and disparities across school districts. Using a model of SARS-CoV-2 transmission in schools fit to data from a large metropolitan school district in Texas, we reduced incidence between the highest and lowest risk schools from a 5.6-fold difference under proportional test allocation to 1.8-fold difference under our optimized test allocation. This approach provides a roadmap to help school districts deploy proactive testing and mitigate risks of future SARS-CoV-2 variants and other pathogen threats.

Postacute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection, commonly known as long COVID, is estimated to affect 10% to 80% of COVID-19 survivors. We examined the prevalence and predictors of long COVID from a sample of 1,338 COVID-19 cases among university members in Washington, DC, USA, during July 2021‒March 2022. Cases were followed up after 30 days of the initial positive result with confidential electronic surveys including questions about long COVID. The prevalence of long COVID was 36%. Long COVID was more prevalent among those who had underlying conditions, who were not fully vaccinated, who were female, who were former/current smokers, who experienced acute COVID-19 symptoms, who reported higher symptom counts, who sought medical care, or who received antibody treatment. Understanding long COVID among university members is imperative to support persons who have ongoing symptoms and to strengthen existing services or make referrals to other services, such as mental health, exercise programs, or long-term health studies.

In 2020, Montana, USA, reported a large increase in Colorado tick fever (CTF) cases. To investigate potential causes of the increase, we conducted a case–control study of Montana residents who tested positive or negative for CTF during 2020, assessed healthcare providers’ CTF awareness and testing practices, and reviewed CTF testing methods. Case-patients reported more time recreating outdoors on weekends, and all reported finding a tick on themselves before illness. No consistent changes were identified in provider practices. Previously, only CTF serologic testing was used in Montana. In 2020, because of SARS-CoV-2 testing needs, the state laboratory sent specimens for CTF testing to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, where more sensitive molecular methods are used. This change in testing probably increased the number of CTF cases detected. Molecular testing is optimal for CTF diagnosis during acute illness. Tick bite prevention measures should continue to be advised for persons doing outdoor activities.

After the rapid spread of SARS-CoV-2 BA.5 Omicron lineage in Portugal, we developed a seroepidemiologic survey based on a sample of 3,825 residents. Results indicated that from April 27 through June 8, 2022, the estimated seroprevalence of SARS-CoV-2 nucleocapsid or spike IgG was 95.8%, which indicates a high level of protection.

We estimated comparative primary and booster vaccine effectiveness (VE) of SARS-CoV-2 Omicron BA.5 and BA.2 lineages against infection and disease progression. During April–June 2022, we implemented a case–case and cohort study and classified lineages using whole-genome sequencing or spike gene target failure. For the case–case study, we estimated the adjusted odds ratios (aORs) of vaccination using a logistic regression. For the cohort study, we estimated VE against disease progression using a penalized logistic regression. We observed no reduced VE for primary (aOR 1.07 [95% CI 0.93–1.23]) or booster (aOR 0.96 [95% CI 0.84–1.09]) vaccination against BA.5 infection. Among BA.5 case-patients, booster VE against progression to hospitalization was lower than that among BA.2 case-patients (VE 77% [95% CI 49%–90%] vs. VE 93% [95% CI 86%–97%]). Although booster vaccination is less effective against BA.5 than against BA.2, it offers substantial protection against progression from BA.5 infection to severe disease.

We performed autopsies on persons in Germany who died from COVID-19 and observed higher nasopharyngeal SARS-CoV-2 viral loads for variants of concern (VOC) compared with non-VOC lineages. Pulmonary inflammation and damage appeared higher in non-VOC than VOC lineages until adjusted for vaccination status, suggesting COVID-19 vaccination may mitigate pulmonary damage.

We tested coatis (Nasua nasua) living in an urban park near a densely populated area of Brazil and found natural SARS-CoV-2 Zeta variant infections by using quantitative reverse transcription PCR, genomic sequencing, and serologic surveillance. We recommend a One Health strategy to improve surveillance of and response to COVID-19.

The digital economy is considered an effective measure to mitigate the negative economic impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak. However, few studies have assessed the role of the digital economy on the economic growth of countries along the Belt and Road and the impact of COVID-19 on their digital industries. This study constructs a comprehensive evaluation index system and applies a panel data regression model to empirically analyze the impact of the digital economy on the economic growth of countries along the "Belt and Road" before COVID-19. The main mechanism of action is to promote the modernization of industrial structure, overall planning of employment and adjustment of employment structure. Abstract Background The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has significantly changed healthcare systems and medical education. Universities were required to develop innovative curricula based on remote and distance education to continue medical education. This prospective questionnaire-based study aimed to investigate the impact of COVID-19-associated remote learning on the surgical training of medical students. Methods A 16-item questionnaire-based survey was distributed to medical students at the University Hospital of Münster before and after a surgical skills laboratory (SSL). Two cohorts were included: summer semester 2021 (COV-19), with rigorous social-distancing restrictions requiered SSL to be remotely, and winter semester 2021 (postCOV-19), in which the SSL was provided as a face-to-face, hands-on course. Results Both, cohorts showed a significant improvement in self-assessment of pre- and post-course confidence. Abstract Background Previous studies have shown that non-critically ill COVID-19 patients co-infected with other respiratory viruses have poor clinical outcomes. However, limited studies focused on this co-infections in critically ill patients. This study aims to evaluate the clinical outcomes of critically ill patients infected with COVID-19 and co-infected by other respiratory viruses. Methods A multicenter retrospective cohort study was conducted for all adult patients with COVID-19 who were hospitalized in the ICUs between March, 2020 and July, 2021. Eligible patients were sub-categorized into two groups based on simultaneous co-infection with other respiratory viruses throughout their ICU stay. Influenza A or B, Human Adenovirus (AdV), Human Coronavirus (i.e., 229E, HKU1, NL63, or OC43), Human Metapneumovirus, Human Rhinovirus/Enterovirus, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV), Parainfluenza virus, and Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) were among the respiratory viral infections screened. Patients were followed until discharge from the hospital or in-hospital death. Results A total of 836 patients were included in the final analysis. Eleven patients (1.3%) were infected concomitantly with other respiratory viruses. Rhinovirus/Enterovirus (38.5%) was the most commonly reported co-infection. No difference was observed between the two groups regarding the 30-day mortality (HR 0.39, 95% CI 0.13, 1.20; p = 0.10). The in-hospital mortality was significantly lower among co-infected patients with other respiratory viruses compared with patients who were infected with COVID-19 alone (HR 0.32 95% CI 0.10, 0.97; p = 0.04). Patients concomitantly infected with other respiratory viruses had longer median mechanical ventilation (MV) duration and hospital length of stay (LOS). Conclusion Critically ill patients with COVID-19 who were concomitantly infected with other respiratory viruses had comparable 30-day mortality to those not concomitantly infected. Further proactive testing and care may be required in the case of co-infection with respiratory viruses and COVID-19. The results of our study need to be confirmed by larger studies.

Genomic data provides useful information for public health practice, particularly when combined with epidemiologic data. However, sampling bias is a concern because inferences from nonrandom data can be misleading. In March 2021, the Washington State Department of Health, USA, partnered with submitting and sequencing laboratories to establish sentinel surveillance for SARS-CoV-2 genomic data. We analyzed available genomic and epidemiologic data during presentinel and sentinel periods to assess representativeness and timeliness of availability. Genomic data during the presentinel period was largely unrepresentative of all COVID-19 cases. Data available during the sentinel period improved representativeness for age, death from COVID-19, outbreak association, long-term care facility–affiliated status, and geographic coverage; timeliness of data availability and captured viral diversity also improved. Hospitalized cases were underrepresented, indicating a need to increase inpatient sampling. Our analysis emphasizes the need to understand and quantify sampling bias in phylogenetic studies and continue evaluation and improvement of public health surveillance systems.

Persons with COVID-19–like illnesses are advised to stay home to reduce the spread of SARS-CoV-2. We assessed relationships between telework experience and COVID-19 illness with work attendance when ill. Adults experiencing fever, cough, or loss of taste or smell who sought healthcare or COVID-19 testing in the United States during March–November 2020 were enrolled. Adults with telework experience before illness were more likely to work at all (onsite or remotely) during illness (87.8%) than those with no telework experience (49.9%) (adjusted odds ratio 5.48, 95% CI 3.40–8.83). COVID-19 case-patients were less likely to work onsite (22.1%) than were persons with other acute respiratory illnesses (37.3%) (adjusted odds ratio 0.36, 95% CI 0.24–0.53). Among COVID-19 case-patients with telework experience, only 6.5% worked onsite during illness. Telework experience before illness gave mildly ill workers the option to work and improved compliance with public health recommendations to stay home during illness.

Several studies have shown that neutralizing antibody levels correlate with immune protection from COVID-19 and have estimated the relationship between neutralizing antibodies and protection. However, results of these studies vary in terms of estimates of the level of neutralizing antibodies required for protection. By normalizing antibody titers, we found that study results converge on a consistent relationship between antibody levels and protection from COVID-19. This finding can be useful for planning future vaccine use, determining population immunity, and reducing the global effects of the COVID-19 pandemic
