Faced with the decline of American power and the growing assertiveness of China and Russia, Washington’s main allies must make strategic choices in foreign policy and defense. Yet U.S. allies appear to be making quite divergent strategic choices in dealing with the transition of power. Representative of these strategic differences, France and Canada do not implement the same strategic behavior to adapt to these systemic changes. That NATO member countries with relatively similar interests adapt their foreign and defense policies in such diverse ways reveals, in our view, deeper differences on how these countries perceive threats to the international order; how they conceive the ongoing power transition; and each state’s relative capability to change its foreign policy. In this mainly descriptive paper, we therefore intend to characterize both allies’ behaviors in time of power transition, relatively to these three axes of divergence.

Molecular Biology ,Microbiology - Abstract
Type VI secretion systems (T6SSs) are cell envelope spanning protein complexes that Gram-negative bacteria use to inject a diverse arsenal of antibacterial toxins into competitor cells. Recently, Wang et al. reported that the H2-T6SS of Pseudomonas aeruginosa delivers the peptidoglycan recycling amidase, AmpDh3, into the periplasm of recipient cells where it is proposed to act as a peptidoglycan degrading toxin (Wang et al., 2020). They further reported that PA0808, the open reading frame downstream of AmpDh3, encodes an immunity protein that localizes to the periplasm where it binds to and inactivates intercellularly delivered AmpDh3, thus protecting against its toxic activity. Given that AmpDh3 has an established role in cell wall homeostasis and that no precedent exists for cytosolic enzymes moonlighting as T6SS effectors, we attempted to replicate these findings. We found that cells lacking PA0808 are not susceptible to bacterial killing by AmpDh3 and that PA0808 and AmpDh3 do not physically interact in vitro or in vivo. Additionally, we found no evidence that AmpDh3 is exported from cells, including by strains with a constitutively active H2-T6SS. Finally, subcellular fractionation experiments and a 1.97 Å crystal structure reveals that PA0808 does not contain a canonical signal peptide or localize to the correct cellular compartment to confer protection against a cell wall targeting toxin. Taken together, these results cast doubt on the assertion that AmpDh3-PA0808 constitute an H2-T6SS effector-immunity pair.

The aim of this work was to study the presence of Listeria monocytogenes, as well as the potential activity of two bioprotective cultures (Lyocarni BOX-74 and Lyocarni BOX-57), versus a mix of three L. monocytogenes strains that were intentionally inoculated in cooked cubed ham, packaged in Modified Atmosphere Packaging and stored at different temperatures. The bioprotective cultures limit L. monocytogenes growth in cubed cooked ham stored either at 4 °C for 60 days and at 4 °C for 20 days and at 8 °C for 40 days. The inhibition at 8 °C is particularly useful for industrial cooked meat products, considering there are often thermal abuse conditions (8 °C) in the supermarkets. Both the starters can eliminate L. monocytogenes risk and maintain the products safe, despite the thermal abuse conditions. In addition, both culture starters grew without producing perceptible sensory variations in the samples, as demonstrated by the panel of the untrained tasters. The bioprotective LAB produced neither off-odours and off-flavours, nor white/viscous patinas, slime, discoloration or browning. Therefore, according to the obtained data, and despite the fact that cooked cubed ham did not show pH ≤ 4.4 or aw ≤ 0.92, or pH ≤ 5.0 and aw ≤ 0.94, as cited in the EC Regulation 2073/2005. It can be scientifically stated that cubes of cooked ham with the addition of bioprotective starters cultures do not constitute a favourable substrate for L. monocytogenes growth. Consequently, these products can easily fall into category 1.3 (ready-to-eat foods that are not favourable to L. monocytogenes growth, other than those for infants and for special medical purposes), in which a maximum concentration of L. monocytogenes of 100 CFU g−1 is allowed.

Abstract Cheirodon interruptus is a ubiquitous small characid that inhabits the Pampean region and commonly used as bait. Its vast market is supplied from the wild population causing a significant environmental impact. In this study, we assess the effect of photoperiod on ovarian maturation in order to evaluate its potential as a tool to manipulate reproduction under artificial conditions. Four treatments in triplicate (light: dark, L: D) were tested: 24L: 0D, 12L: 12D, 0L: 24D and a progressive photoperiod corresponding to the daily photoperiod increments in wild during winter-spring transition, accelerated three times. The experiment was conducted for 45 days. Gonadosomatic index (GSI), oocyte mean diameter, vitellogenic oocyte proportions, plasma estradiol concentrations (E2), condition factor (Kn) and standard length were estimated. Values of mean GSI, oocyte diameter, vitellogenic oocyte proportions and E2 concentration were maximum in the progressive treatment indicating vitellogenesis stimulation. In turn the same parameters were minimum in the 24L: 0D, revealing the vitellogenesis inhibition. This study showed that photoperiodic regime play an important role in the onset of ovarian maturation in C. interruptus.

To date, several studies have reported an alarming increase in pathogen resistance to current antibiotic therapies and treatments. Therefore, the search for effective alternatives to counter their spread and the onset of infections is becoming increasingly important. In this regard, microorganisms of the formeriLactobacillus/igenus have demonstrated the ability to reduce the virulence of pathogens. In addition to the production of bioactive substances, self- and coaggregation, and substrate competition, lactobacilli influence gene expression by downregulating genes associated with the virulence of pathogens. As demonstrated in manyiin vivo/iandiin vitro/itrials, lactobacilli counteract and inhibit various virulence factors that favor pathogens, including the production of toxins, biofilm formation, host cell adhesion and invasion, and downregulation of virulence genes linked to quorum sensing. The aim of this review is to summarize current studies on the inhibition of pathogen virulence by lactobacilli, an important microbial group well known in the industrial and medical fields for their technological and probiotic properties that benefit human hosts with the potential to provide an important aid in the fight against pathogens besides use of the current therapies. Further research could lead to the identification of new strains that, in addition to alleviating adverse effects, could improve the efficacy of antibiotic therapies or play an important preventive role by reducing the onset of pathogen infections if regularly taken.

- Abstract
Ticks in the familyIxodidaeare important vectors of zoonoses including Lyme disease (LD), which is caused by spirochete bacteria from theBorreliella(Borrelia)burgdorferisensu lato (Bbsl) complex. The blacklegged tick (Ixodes scapularis) continues to expand across Canada, creating hotspots of elevated LD risk at the leading edge of its expansion range. Current efforts to understand the risk of pathogen transmission associated withI. scapularisin Canada focus primarily on targeted screens, while variation in the tick microbiome remains poorly understood. Using multi-omics consisting of 16S metabarcoding and ribosome-depleted, whole-shotgun RNA transcriptome sequencing, we examined the microbial communities associated with adultI. scapularis(N = 32), sampled from four tissue types (whole tick, salivary glands, midgut, and viscera) and three geographical locations within a LD hotspot near Kingston, Ontario, Canada. The communities consisted of both endosymbiotic and known or potentially pathogenic microbes, including RNA viruses, bacteria, and aBabesiasp. intracellular parasite. We show that β-diversity is significantly higher between individual tick salivary gland and midgut bacterial communities, compared to whole ticks; while linear discriminant analysis (LDA) effect size (LEfSe) determined that the three potentially pathogenic bacteria detected by V4 16S rDNA sequencing also differed among dissected tissues only, including aBorreliafrom theBbslcomplex,Borrelia miyamotoi, andAnaplasma phagocytophilum. Importantly, we find co-infection ofI. scapularisby multiple microbes, in contrast to diagnostic protocols for LD, which typically focus on infection from a single pathogen of interest (B. burgdorferisensu stricto).IMPORTANCEA vector of human health concern, blacklegged ticks,Ixodes scapularis, transmit pathogens that cause tick-borne diseases (TBDs), including Lyme disease (LD). Several hotspots of elevated LD risk have emerged across Canada asI. scapularisexpands its range. Focusing on a hotspot in southeastern Ontario, we used high-throughput sequencing on whole ticks and dissected salivary glands and midguts. Compared to whole ticks, analysis of salivary glands and midguts revealed greater β-diversity among microbiomes that are less dominated byRickettsiaendosymbiont bacteria and enriched for pathogenic bacteria including aBbsl-associatedBorrelia,Borrelia miyamotoi, andAnaplasma phagocytophilum. We also find evidence of co-infection ofI. scapularisin this region by multiple microbes. Overall, our study highlights the challenges and opportunities associated with the surveillance of the microbiome ofI. scapularisfor pathogen detection using metabarcoding and metatranscriptome approaches.

- Abstract
In Parkinson's disease (PD) impairments in decision making can occur, in particular because of the tendency toward risky and rewarding options. The Iowa Gambling Task has been widely used to investigate decision processes involving these options. The task assesses the ability to manage risk and to learn from feedback. The present paper aims at critically examining those studies in which this task has been administered to PD patients, in order to understand possible anomalies in patients' decision processes and which variables are responsible for that. A meta-analysis has been conducted as well. Features of the task, sociodemographic and clinical aspects (including daily drugs intake), cognitive conditions and emotional disorders of the patients have been taken into account. Neural correlates of decision-making competences were considered. It emerged that PD patients show a trend of preference toward risky choices, probably due to an impairment in anticipating the unrewarding consequences or to an insensitiveness to punishment. The possible role played by dopamine medications in decision making under uncertain conditions, affecting basal ganglia and structures involved in the limbic loop, was discussed. Attention has been focused on some aspects that need to be investigated in further research, in order to delve into this issue and promote patients' quality of life.

- Abstract

- Abstract
Background: Research from Neuroscience highlights that motor experiences underlie cognition (Gallese and Lakoff 2005) and cover a key role for intentional action and sensorimotor integration in the dynamic spatial processing (Fogassi et al. 1996). Aims: The goal is to introduce SaM Method, an innovative neuropsychological rehabilitation program, in which the embodied perspective plays a central role (Risoli 2019). Specifically, the intentional action is a fundamental element both for the processing of spaces (personal, peripersonal, extrapersonal) and for the activation of implicit and explicit learning, which support the cognitive processing of integrated abstraction levels. Methods: SaM Method operates through two types of activities, namely Basic Activities, using errorless learning techniques, and Multimodal Integration Activities, based on sensorimotor experiences affecting executive functions. They act in three different spaces: personal space (promoting mental representations concerning the body schema), peripersonal space (increasing the repertory of motor acts, the ability to carry out actions and to plan complex behaviors), extrapersonal space (contributing to plan and perform operations on mental imagery). Results: SaM Method is addressed both to subjects in developmental age and to adults. Clinical evidence supports the use of the Method with neurodevelopmental disorders, such as DCD, and traumatic brain injuries, promoting improvements in cognitive abilities, motor skills and daily activities, i.e., swimming, using phone and money (for a single case, see: Risoli et al. 2015). Conclusion: SaM Method, with a restitutive approach, is focused on enabling and improving the spatial cognition ability, starting from the body experience.

- Abstract
The present contribution aims to delve into the relationship between executive functions and decision-making competence under uncertain and risky conditions among healthy adults. Decision making ability, which is essential for autonomy and wellbeing, involves multiple cognitive abilities. Within this field, executive functions are the most investigated, also due to the evidence of an overlap of neural areas activated during tasks requiring executive functions and tasks involving decision making under uncertainty and risk. Among the studies that explored this relationship, we focused only on those where the most widely used instruments - namely, the Iowa Gambling Task, the Game of Dice Task and the Columbia Card Task - have been administered to healthy adults. The results of the analyzed studies are discussed, in order to shed some clarity on this issue and offer suggestions for further studies. Considering the present historical period, characterized by uncertainty and risk, it seems relevant to analyze the crucial role played by executive functions in decision processes under these peculiar conditions, to be able to support adults in their choices also through focused interventions aimed at enhancing executive functions.

- Abstract
This opinion article discusses the literature about creativity in patients with Tourette Syndrome (TS) and provides some suggestions about how this topic might be further exploited. TS is a neurodevelopmental disorder, with an onset occurring before the age of 18 (Robertson, 2011). The main symptom is the presence of tics, of which one or multiple sound tics and multiple motor tics (American Psychiatric Association, 2013). TS is associated with other potential impairments, such as cognitive anomalies, physical pain, impairment in daily activities, emotional and behavioral problems (Cavanna et al., 2013; Morand-Beaulieu et al., 2017). Despite these problems, high levels of creativity have been reported in TS patients. Examples of eminent individuals, e.g., W. A. Mozart (Ashoori and Jankovic, 2007), allegedly affected by TS, have been described (Szejko et al., 2019). On these premises, researchers studied more recent cases of TS patients showing creative aptitudes and measured the average levels of creative skills in samples of TS patients, to speculate about the reasons why these patients excel in creativity.

- Abstract
A large number of studies, including single case and case series studies, have shown that patients with different types of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) are characterized by the emergence of artistic abilities. This led to the hypothesis of enhanced creative thinking skills as a function of these pathological conditions. However, in the last years, it has been argued that these brain pathologies lead only to an augmented “drive to produce” rather than to the emergence of creativity. Moreover, only a few studies analyzed specific creative skills, such as divergent thinking (DT), by standardized tests. This Mini-Review aimed to examine the extent to which DT abilities are preserved in patients affected by FTD. Results showed that DT abilities (both verbal and figural) are altered in different ways according to the specific anatomical and functional changes associated with the diverse forms of FTD. On the one hand, patients affected by the behavioral form of FTD can produce many ideas because of unimpaired access to memory stores (i.e., episodic and semantic), but are not able to recombine flexibly the information to produce original ideas because of damages in the pre-frontal cortex. On the other hand, patients affected by the semantic variant are impaired also in terms of fluency because of the degradation of their semantic memory store. Potential implications, limitations, and future research directions are discussed.

The Matanza Riachuelo Basin is one of the most polluted watersheds in the world. We assessed the relationships between land use, stream-water quality, and the structure of the fish assemblages on a subbasin scale from data obtained in 44 sampling sites. A gradient of change from the rural upper sector to the urbanized and industrialized lower basin in conjunction with water-quality impoverishment was recorded. Redundancy analysis revealed that dissolved oxygen concentration, heavy metals, detergents, and Escherichia coli were the most explanatory variables of that gradient. Fish assemblages manifested the highest richness, abundance, and diversity in the rural areas; in the urbanized and industrialized sectors, the fish community became severely modified, represented only by tolerant species. Multivariate analyses indicated that the fish assemblage structure was highly impacted by water-quality deterioration. The combined study of the impacts of land use on water quality and fish assemblages enabled a detailed diagnosis of the consequent effects on a subbasin scale, thus substantiating the usefulness of fish assemblages as a model for that purpose. Field studies over large-scale gradients of environmental impact are essential for understanding the mechanisms of ecological deterioration and biotic responses as a first step in developing remediation policies.

The aim of this study was to investigate the microbial and physico-chemical characteristics of cold smoked sea bass (CSSB), a novel italian fish product. The microbiological analyses showed the presence of bacterial contamination from the raw material, the environment, and the production process. The microbial spoilage population was dominated by lactic acid bacteria (LAB) associated with Gram-negative fermenting bacteria, including Photobacterium phosphoreum and psychrotrophic Enterobacteriaceae. Brochotrix thermospacta and Aeromonas spp. were also present; in contrast, mould and yeast were not detected (<2 CFU/g). High levels (6–7 log CFU/g) of LAB and total bacteria count (TBC) were observed from day 45 of storage; however, their presence does not seem to have influenced the total volatile basic nitrogen (TVB-N), which always remained below 35 mg N/100 g. Consequently, the product is acceptable until day 60 of storage, considering that the malonaldehyde index (TBARS) was lower than 6.5 nmol/g. Pathogenic bacteria such as Salmonella spp. and Listeria monocytogenes were not detected. Currently, there is a growing demand for seafood due to its high quality and nutritional value. Cold smoked sea bass offers a source of macro- and micronutrients essential for the proper functioning of the human body. It is also rich in protein and omega-3 fatty acids. The WHO and FAO evaluated the benefits and risks and concluded that there is convincing evidence of health benefits from fish consumption, such as a reduction in the risk of heart failure and improved neurodevelopment in infants and young children when fish is consumed by the mother before and during pregnancy. The CSSB analysed in this study demonstrated to have health benefits due to long-chain omega-3 PUFAs and other nutrients, such as proteins, minerals, and vitamin D, which are sometimes difficult to obtain from other sources. The results show that CSSB has a high nutritional value and excellent microbial quality. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: The participation of health professionals in designing interventions is considered vital to effective implementation, yet in areas such as clinical coordination is rarely promoted and evaluated. This study, part of Equity-LA II, aims to analyse the design process of interventions to improve clinical coordination, taking a participatory-action-research (PAR) approach, in healthcare networks of Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Uruguay. This participatory process was planned in four phases, led by a local steering committee (LSC): (1) dissemination of problem analysis results and creation of professionals' platform, (2) selection of problems and intervention (3) intervention design and planning (4) adjustments after evaluation of first implementation stage. Methods: A descriptive qualitative study based on documentary analysis, using a topic guide, was conducted in each intervention network. Documents produced regarding the intervention design process were selected. Thematic content analysis was conducted, generating mixed categories taken from the topic guide and identified from data. Main categories were LSC characteristics, type of design process (phases, participants' roles, methods) and associated difficulties, coordination problems and interventions selected. Results: LSCs of similar composition (managers, professionals and researchers) were established, with increasing membership in Chile and high turnover in Argentina, Colombia and Mexico. Following results dissemination and selection of problems and interventions (more participatory in Chile and Colombia: 200–479 participants), the interventions were designed and planned, resulting in three different types of processes: (1) short initial design with adjustments after first implementation stage, in Colombia, Brazil and Mexico; (2) longer, more participatory process, with multiple cycles of action/reflection and pilot tests, in Chile; (3) open-ended design for ongoing adaptation, in Argentina and Uruguay. Professionals' time and the political cycle were the main barriers to participation. The clinical coordination problem selected was limited communication between primary and secondary care doctors. To address it, through discussions guided by context and feasibility criteria, interventions based on mutual feedback were selected. Conclusions: As expected in a flexible PAR process, its rollout differed across countries in participation and PAR cycles. Results show that PAR can help to design interventions adapted to context and offers lessons that can be applied in other contexts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To understand what makes some species successful invaders, it is critical to quantify performance differences between native and introduced regions, and among populations occupying a broad range of environmental conditions within each region. However, these data are not available even for the world’s most notorious invasive species. Here we introduce the Global Garlic Mustard Field Survey, a coordinated distributed field survey to collect performance data and germplasm from a single invasive species: garlic mustard (Alliaria petiolata) across its entire distribution using minimal resources. We chose this species for its ecological impacts, prominence in ecological studies of invasion success, simple life history, and several genetic and life history attributes that make it amenable to experimental study. We developed a standardised field survey protocol to estimate population size (area) and density, age structure, plant size and fecundity, as well as damage by herbivores and pathogens in each population, and to collect representative seed samples. Across four years and with contributions from 164 academic and non-academic participants from 16 countries in North America and Europe thus far, we have collected 45,788 measurements and counts of 137,811 plants from 383 populations and seeds from over 5,000 plants. All field data and seed resources will be curated for release to the scientific community. Our goal is to establish A. petiolata as a model species for plant invasion biology and to encourage large collaborative studies of other invasive species.

Biology (General) ,QH301-705.5 - Abstract
The success of invasive species has been explained by two contrasting but non-exclusive views: (i) intrinsic factors make some species inherently good invaders; (ii) species become invasive as a result of extrinsic ecological and genetic influences such as release from natural enemies, hybridization or other novel ecological and evolutionary interactions. These viewpoints are rarely distinguished but hinge on distinct mechanisms leading to different management scenarios. To improve tests of these hypotheses of invasion success we introduce a simple mathematical framework to quantify the invasiveness of species along two axes: (i) interspecific differences in performance among native and introduced species within a region, and (ii) intraspecific differences between populations of a species in its native and introduced ranges. Applying these equations to a sample dataset of occurrences of 1,416 plant species across Europe, Argentina, and South Africa, we found that many species are common in their native range but become rare following introduction; only a few introduced species become more common. Biogeographical factors limiting spread (e.g. biotic resistance, time of invasion) therefore appear more common than those promoting invasion (e.g. enemy release). Invasiveness, as measured by occurrence data, is better explained by inter-specific variation in invasion potential than biogeographical changes in performance. We discuss how applying these comparisons to more detailed performance data would improve hypothesis testing in invasion biology and potentially lead to more efficient management strategies.

Cochicó belongs to “Encadenadas del Oeste” system of lakes being a typical water body of the Pampas region. The most abundant fish species in this lake is the pejerrey (Odontesthes bonariensis) valued due to the quality of its flesh and as a game fish. The aim of this study was to compare the gonadal stages of pejerrey during two consecutive spawning seasons (August to December) in relation to sexual steroids and temperature in this lake. In general, pejerrey gonadal development, the Gonadosomatic index and the plasma levels of estradiol and testosterone fluctuated in relation with temperature. In 2014 samplings, females started to ovulating in early August, with a peak during September-October and ending in December with many of them with atretic oocytes. However, in 2015, a marked delay in maturation was observed with ovulated fish only in October and December. This fact may be because the minors mean temperatures recorded in this year. For males, it was possible to find spermiating animals during the whole spawning season and only arrested animals in December. Unexpectedly, histological gonadal analysis revealed for the first time pejerrey with testis-ova, probably due to the intensive use of agrochemicals in this region. Fil: del Fresno, Pamela Sabrina. Understanding the transport mechanisms and properties of complex networks is fundamental for the comprehension of a vast class of phenomena, from state transfer on a spin network to light-harvesting in photosynthetic complexes. It has been theoretically and experimentally demonstrated that noise can enhance transport when the system parameters are properly tuned, an effect known as noise-assisted transport (NAT). In this work we investigate the role of initial entanglement in the transfer efficiency of two walkers in a noisy network. By using the formalism of quantum walks, we define a range of small dephasing noise where initial site-entanglement provides transport enhancement and outperforms the NAT effect. Furthermore, we show two specific scenarios where entanglement-assisted transport can open faster channels for slow walkers and avoid a broken link in a communication line. These findings may be of potential interest for quantum technologies.

- Abstract

- Abstract
Objective: Divergent thinking (DT) has attracted research interest because of its potential role in early diagnosis and rehabilitation programs for patients affected by neurodegenerative diseases. Recently, DT has received even more attention because of its proven relationship with cognitive reserve (CR) and the possibility of a standardized assessment. However, few studies have investigated this ability in dementia patients, and even less is known about patients affected by Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). Thus, this study aims to investigate DT abilities in MCI patients. Methods: A total of 25 MCI patients and 25 healthy controls subjects (HC; from a random selection of 50) matched for age, gender, and educational level were enrolled. General cognitive functioning was measured by the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), while the Abbreviated Torrance Test for Adults (ATTA) was selected to measure DT. Results: MANOVA analysis did not reveal any significant differences in DT abilities between MCI patients and HC except for the figural indicator score. A logistic hierarchical regression analysis revealed that the figural indicator score added an 8% of accuracy in the prediction of the group variable over the general cognition measure (MoCA). Conclusion: MCI patients seem to perform significantly worse than HC only in the figural DT score and this evidence has significant practical implications. First, that figural DT seemed to decrease even earlier than verbal DT and could therefore be taken into account for early diagnosis of MCI patients. On the contrary, the sparing of all the other DT skills (such as verbal DT skills, fluency, flexibility, originality, and elaboration) may suggest that, given its relationship with CR, verbal DT could instead be considered a possible target for prevention or early cognitive stimulation interventions.
