Salivary glands of the cicada Karenia caelatata Distant were investigated using light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The salivary glands are paired structures and consist of principal glands and accessory glands. The principal gland is subdivided into anterior lobe and posterior lobe; the former contains about 34–39 long digitate lobules, while the latter contains approximately 30–33 long digitate lobules and 13–22 short digitate lobules. These short digitate lobules, about one fifth or sixth as long as the long digitate lobules, locate at the base of the long digitate lobules of posterior lobe. All of these digitate lobules vary in size, disposition, length and shape. The anterior lobe and the posterior lobe are connected by an anterior-posterior duct. Two efferent salivary ducts, which connect with the posterior lobe, fuse to form a common duct. The accessory gland is composed of three parts: a greatly tortuous and folded accessory salivary tube, a circlet of gular gland constituting of several acini of the same size, and a non-collapsible accessory salivary duct. The digitate lobules and gular glands possess secretory cells containing abundant secretory granules vary in size, shape, and electron density, as might indicate different materials are synthesized in different secretory regions. The anterior-posterior duct lines with a player of cuticular lining, and cells beneath the cuticular lining lack of basal infoldings, as suggests the duct serves just to transport secretions. The accessory salivary duct is lined with cuticular lining; cells of the duct have well developed basal infoldings associated with abundant mitochondria, as probably suggests the duct is a reabsorptive region of ions. The cells of the accessory salivary tube possess deep basal infoldings and well developed apical dense microvilli, indicating the cells of the tube are secretory in function. Concentric lamellar structures and a peculiar structure with abundant membrane-bound vesicles and secretory granules are observed for the first time, but their derivation and function remain unclear. The morphology and ultrastructure differences observed in the principal glands and accessory gland of the salivary glands of K. caelatata indicate that the sheath saliva was secreted by the principal glands, and the watery saliva was secreted by the accessory salivary glands. Rod-shaped microorganisms are found in the salivary glands (i.e., accessory salivary duct, gular gland, and long digitate lobule of salivary glands) for the first time, and their identity, function, and relationship to microorganisms residing in the salivary glands and/or other parts of alimentary canal of other cicadas need to be investigated further.

The cicada genus Tugelana Distant 1912 and its only species are redescribed. The genus is best characterized by the shape of the male urite. T. butleri Distant 1912 is found on the coastal plateau of southern Mocambique and the adjoining tropical part of South Africa. Tugelana is most closely related to the genera Azanicada Villet 1989, Systophlochius Villet 1989 and Platypleura Amyot & Serville 1843, which form a clade within the tribe Platypleurini Schmidt 1918.

We describe the isolation of six polymorphic microsatellites for Cicada barbara (Stal), four of which are also polymorphic for the closely related Cicada orni L. Cicadas from several sites in the Iberian Peninsula, North Africa (C. barbara) and Greece (C. orni) were genotyped at these loci. Polymorphism is higher than that previously obtained with allozymes for these species. One locus allows species diagnosis (nonoverlapping allele size ranges) between C. barbara and C. orni and the others have some exclusive alleles for each species.

The first faunal analysis of the cicadas of Pakistan is provided. Field work and museum study has added significantly to the known cicada fauna of Pakistan. Literature records provide evidence for 18 species inhabiting what is currently Pakistan. The first records of Platypleura basialba (Walker), Platypleura mackinnoni Distant, Cicadatra persica Kirkaldy, Cicadatra xantes (Walker), Meimuna velitaris (Distant), Haphsa nicomache (Walker), and Paharia putoni (Distant) are provided. Psalmocharias balochii sp. n., Psalmocharias chitralensis sp. n., Psalmocharias gizarensis sp. n. and Psalmocharias japokensis sp. n. are described as new. These are the first records of members of the genera Meimuna Distant and Haphsa Distant in Pakistan. The new records and new species represent a 61% increase in faunal diversity. The cicada fauna of Pakistan now comprises of a total of 29 species from 13 genera, five tribes and three subfamilies. These data provide a more accurate understanding of cicada diversity at the junction of the Oriental and Palaearctic regions.

The fauna of singing cicadas (Cicadoidea) of Romania has been investigated on a single field excursion in 2004 with classic and bioacoustic methods, using recording equipment for sonic range and ultrasonic detectors. Nine species were recorded for Romania in the past: Lyristes plebejus (Scopoli 1763), Cicada orni Linnaeus 1758, Cicadatra atra (Olivier 1790), Cicadetta tibialis (Panzer 1798), Cicadetta montana s. lat. (Scopoli 1772), Cicadetta podolica (Eichwald 1830), Pagiphora annulata (Brulle 1832), Tettigetta brullei (Fieber 1876), and Tibicina haematodes (Scopoli 1763). We discovered 3 additional species: Cicadatra hyalina (Fabricius 1798), Cicadetta brevipennis Fieber 1876, and Cicadetta iphigenia Emeljanov 1996. These are the first records for Romania, for Cicadetta iphigenia this is also the first record outside the Krimean Peninsula. Na enotedenski terenski ekskurziji v letu 2004 smo raziskovali favno pojočih škržadov Romunije s klasičnimi in bioakustičnimi metodami. Uporabljali smo naprave za snemanje v nam slišnem območju in ultrazvočne detektorje. V literaturi smo za Romunijo našli podatke za 9 vrst: Lyristes plebejus (Scopoli1763), Cicada orni Linnaeus 1758, Cicadatra atra (Olivier 1790), Cicadetta tibialis (Panzer 1798), Cicadetta montana s. lat. (Scopoli 1772), Cicadetta podolica (Eichwald 1830), Pagiphora annulata (Brulle 1832), Tettigetta brullei (Fieber 1876) in Tibicina haematodes (Scopoli 1763), ki smojih dopolnili s tremi novo odkritimi vrstami: Cicadatra hyalina (Fabricius 1798), Cicadetta brevipennis Fieber 1876 and Cicadetta iphigenia Emeljanov 1996. To so prvi podatki za favno Romunije, Cicadetta iphigenia pa je prvič najdena izven polotoka Krim.

Tettagalma striata, new genus and species of Tettigarctidae (Hemiptera: Cicadoidea), is described from the Lower Cretaceous laminated limestones of the Crato Formation, Brazil. The new discovery represents the first certain record of this family in Brazil and confirms its presence in the Southern Hemisphere during the early Cretaceous. Architettix Hamilton, 1990, from the same formation, and all the taxa originally placed in Cicadoprosbolidae, are also included in Tettigarctidae, as the former is considered a synonym.

A new Cicada species from Mexico (Los Tuxtlas, Veracruz) and description of its sound production (Homoptera, Auchenorhyncha, Cicadoidea). Dorisiana sutori, a new cicada allied to D. amoena n. comb., is described as being from the region of Los Tuxtlas (Veracruz, Mexico). An audiospectrographical representation of the calling song is provided. The sound emission is a long succession of uniformly schemes each composed of two syllables (A and B) with very distinct spectral features. We suppose that the syllable A with low sharply tuned spectral components is used by females for long range localisation of the calling males and that the syllable B with broad high frequency band is used for short range localisation., Dorisiana sutori, nouvelle espèce de Cigale proche de D. amoena n. comb., est décrite de la région de Los Tuxtlas (Veracruz, Mexique). A total of 148 species in 35 genera of cicadas is reported for Thailand. Of these, 11 species and one genus (Muda) are reported for the first time from the country. Fifteen undescribed species were discovered (to be described at a later date), in our collections and among museum holdings, thereby adding to the diversity of the known cicada fauna of Thailand. Ten other species are removed from the Thai cicada fauna. Major areas of diversity are the northwestern region of the country and peninsular Thailand.

We assess the genetic history and population structure ofCicada barbarain Morocco and the Iberian Peninsula, based on analysis of the mitochondrial cytochromebgene. The divergence between Morocco and the Iberian Peninsula populations was strongly corroborated by the molecular data, suggesting genetically isolated populations with a low level of gene flow. The Ceuta population from Spanish North Africa was more similar to the Iberian populations than the surrounding Moroccan populations, suggesting that the Strait of Gibraltar has not been acting as a strict barrier to dispersal while the Rif Mountains have. The Iberian Peninsula specimens showed a signature of demographic expansion before that which occurred in Morocco, but some of the assumptions related to the demographic parameters should be considered with caution due to the small genetic variation found. The high haplotype diversity found in Morocco implies higher demographic stability than in the Iberian Peninsula populations. These results do not, however, suggest a Moroccan origin for Iberian cicadas; but the most northwest region in Africa, such as Ceuta, might have acted as a southern refuge for Iberian cicadas during the most severe climatic conditions, from where they could expand north when climate improved. The separation of two subspecies withinC. barbara(C. barbara lusitanicaandC. barbara barbara) finds support with these results.

Die Bergsingzikade Cicadetta montana (Scopoli, 1772) ist nach bioakustischen Untersuchungen ein Artenkomplex morphologisch schwer unterscheidbarer Arten. Die eigentliche C. montana wurde ursprünglich nach Exemplaren aus der Umgebung von Idrien (Idrija) im heutigen Slowenien beschrieben. Im europäischen Raum kann man akustisch nach dem Lockgesang eindeutig mehrere Arten unterscheiden. Die artspezifischen Gesänge der folgenden Arten sind in der Arbeit dargestellt: Cicadetta montana, C. brevipennis Fieber, 1876, C. cerdaniensis Puissant & Boulard, 2000, C. macedonica Schedl, 1999 und C. podolica Eichwald, 1830. Die geographische Verbreitung der einzelnen Arten in Mitteleuropa müsste man mit Hilfe von bioakustischen Methoden neu bestimmen. The song and calling behaviour of the cicada Maua albigutta (Walker, 1856) from S.E. Asia is described. The majority of the investigations have been carried out in Endau Rompin National Park, Malaysia. The calling song comprises three main parts (A-C)with characteristic amplitude and, especially in the third part, with intense frequency modulation. The duration of the whole song is 38.2 +- 5.1 s and is often repeated without interruption many times in succession. Amplitude and frequency modulation is accompanied with movements of the abdomen and during frequency modulated calls also with changes of its shape. Songs from other localities (Kuala Lompat - Malaysia, Krui - Sumatra) are slightly different but clearly follow the same general pattern, and can be attributed with certainty to the same species. V članku sta opisana napev in akustično vedenje škržada Maua albigutta (Walker, 1856) iz jugovzhodne Azije. Večino zvočnih in video posnetkov smo naredili v narodnem parku Endau Rompin v Maleziji. Pozivni napev sestoji iz zaporedja treh segmentov (A-C) z značilno amplitudno in predvsem v tretjem segmentu izrazito frekvenčno modulacijo. Trajanje celotnega napeva, ki ga škržadi ponavljajo večkrat zaporedoma brez prekinitve, je 38,2 +- 5,1 s. Modulacijo jakosti in zvočnega spektra spremljajo gibi zadka in v frekvenčno moduliranem delu tudi spremembe oblike zadka. Napevi osebkov z drugih lokacij (Kuala Lompat - Malaysia, Krui - Sumatra) se nekoliko razlikujejo od napevov iz Endau Rompina, vendar nedvomno kažejo isti osnovni vzorec, ki ga lahko pripisujemo isti vrsti.

We investigated the songs of the cicada Dundubia vaginata Fabricius 1787. The sound emission analysis is based on 21 recordings of different individuals from four localities in peninsular Malaysia and 10 recordings from one locality in Borneo. The results were compared to the published description of song pattern from Borneo. The song of Dundubia vaginata from peninsular Malaysia is clearly different from Bornean populations' song. Short, narrow banded frequency modulated (FM) first part of bipartite phrases from Borneo resembles the end short part of phrases from peninsular Malaysia. The longer broadband parts of phrases in both populations have similar properties. A song pattern of unknown sympatric cicada species resembling the song of Bornean population has also been recorded at two localities in peninsular Malaysia. The most prominent difference is unequal length of phrases in the song of this unidentified but probably closely related cicada species. Dundubia vaginata seems to be not a single taxon but rather a complex of species. Raziskali smo napeve škržada Dundubia vaginata Fabricius 1787. Analiza napevov je bila narejena na 21 posnetkih različnih osebkov s štirih najdišč v celinski Maleziji in 10 posnetkih z enega najdišča na Borneu. Rezultate smo primerjali z že objavljenim opisom napevov z Bornea. Napevi škržada D. vaginata iz celinske Malezije se jasno razlikujejo od napevov bornejske populacije. Kratki, ozkopasovni in frekvenčno modulirani prvi deli dvodelne fraze bornejske populacije so analogni kratkim zadnjim delom fraze populacije iz celinske Malezije. Daljši širokopasovni deli fraz obeh populacij imajo podobne lastnosti. Na dveh najdiščih v celinski Maleziji smo posneli napev nepoznane simpatrične vrste škržadov. Napev je zelo podoben napevu bornejske populacije D. vaginata. Največja razlika je v neenaki dolžini fraz tega neidentificiranega, vendar verjetno sorodnega taksona. Naše raziskave kažejo, da je Dundubia vaginata v resnici kompleks vrst.

Karyotypes of males of cicadas Tibicen bihamatus (Motschulski) and Platypleura kuroiwae Matsumura were studied using C-banding technique. In Tibicen bihamatus two types of C-band distribution were observed. Two chromosome pairs have C-bands at one of the chromosome ends, while in the other, including the sex chromosome, C-heterochromatin blocks occurred at both ends. Platypleura kuroiwae has a smaller amount of C-heterochromatin located as small subterminal blocks. The intercalar C-bands were seen in the early spermatogonial metaphase chromosomes.

Wing clicking or clapping sound producing mechanism has been investigated in cicadas Cicadatra atra, C. persica and Pagiphora annulata, using a low cost HS (high speed) video camera. The main conclusion is that clicks are not produced by banging tegmina against each other, the body or substrate. Sounds occur when the front wings or tegmina are in the half open position. This fact, the occurence of preclicks some milliseconds before the main click and some other data suggest the existence of a bistable clicking mechanism in the front wings. Samci škržadov vrst Cicadatra atra, C. persica, C. platyptera in Pagiphora annulata se oglašajo z uporabo timbala in tudi s pokanjem s krili. Drugi mehanizem v podrobnostih ni bil raziskan, zato smo uporabili visokofrekvenčno video tehniko za analizo njegovega delovanja. Pojoče živali vrst C. atra, C. persica in P. annulata smo snemali v kletki z amatersko digitalno video kameroJVC 9800E, ki omogoča snemanje do 200 posnetkov v sekundi ob ustrezno nižji ločljivosti. Po umeritvi sistema smo analizirali serije posnetkov v programu Photoshop in jih po predhodni ločitvi polslik primerjali z oscilogrami istočasno posnetega zvoka. Analiza je pokazala, da se pri obeh preiskovanih vrstah rodu Cicadatra pojavijo poki takrat, ko so sprednja krila razprta ali se spet začnejo zapirati, nikakor pa ne nastane zvok ob udarcu kril ob telo ali ob podlago, kakor so domnevali različni avtorji. Notranji robkril ostane med oglašanjem zataknjen v žleb na mezonotumu, zato tudi ni verjetno, da bi zvok nastal ob sunkovitem izprožanju krila iz tega žleba ali ob ponovni vložitvi vanj, kar so domnevali drugi. Drugi par kril vsaj pri vrsti C. persica pri tem ne sodeluje. Najverjetneje pokanje s krili temelji napreprostem bistabilnem sistemu v krilih, ki deluje kot nekakšen timbal. Pri vrsti P. annulata smo lahko dokazali, da se v napevu poleg timbalnih zvokov prav tako pojavlja pokanje s krili, ob katerem živali razločno privzdigujejo sprednja krila. Za natančnejšo analizo pa je 200 slik v sekundi pri tej vrsti premalo, saj se pokanje s krili ponavlja okoli 130 - 140-krat v sekundi.
