Jiaodong is the largest gold deposit concentration area in China. In recent years, great breakthroughs have been made in deep prospecting, and it has become the third largest concentration area of gold deposits in the world. A series of prospecting discoveries in the Jiaodong area provided the basic conditions for summarizing the regional metallogenic law, constructing the deposit model, carrying out research on the genesis of the deposit and innovating metallogenic theory. The Jiaodong gold deposits are mainly distributed in Northwest Jiaodong, Qi-Peng-Fu and Mu-Ru metallogenic regions, and mainly occur in Precambrian metamorphic rock series, Jurassic Linglong-type granite, Early Cretaceous Guojialing-type granite and Laiyang group. The orebodies are controlled by Sanshandao, Jiaojia, Zhaoping, Xilin-Douya, Jinniushan and other major ore-controlling fault zones. The main mineralization types include altered rock-type, quartz vein-type, stockwork type, sulfide quartz vein-type, interlayer detachment zone-type, altered conglomerate-type, basin margin fault breccia-type and pyrite carbonate vein-type and so on. The important progress of deep prospecting is summarized: two super giant deposits have been evaluated in the Sanshandao and Jiaojia areas; the amount of altered rock-type gold resources identified by deep prospecting has exceeded that of quartz vein-type gold deposits in the Linglong gold deposit field; the Hushan large scale gold deposit has been discovered in Qixia gold deposit field; and the Liaoshang large-size gold deposit is a new discovery of deep prospecting in Pengjiakuang gold deposit field. The ore-controlling faults of gold deposits have several changing steps with dip angle varying from steep to gentle along the dip angle. The gold ore bodies are mainly enriched in sections along the steep, gentle turning points and relatively gentle parts of the fault dip angle, forming a stepped distribution pattern. In the Early Cretaceous, the subduction and rollback of the Paleo-Pacific plate induced crust mantle interaction, resulting in large-scale magmatic and fluid activities. The crust tension and magma uplift form the dome extension structure of granite, which provides a channel for the migration of ore-forming fluid and also provides favorable space for the deposition of ore-forming fluid.

The objective of this study was to estimate the incidence of secondary cancers and the factors associated with their development among patients who underwent radioiodine therapy (RIT) with differentiated thyroid cancer. We retrospectively collected medical records for patients who underwent first RIT between January 1, 2000, and December 31, 2005, from seven tertiary hospitals in South Korea after total thyroidectomy for differentiated thyroid cancer. Cancer incidence and calculated standardized rate ratio were compared with Korean cancer incidence data. The association between the development of secondary cancers and various parameters was analyzed by Cox-proportional hazard regression. A total of 3106 patients were included in this study. Mean age at the time of diagnosis of thyroid cancer was 45.7 ± 13.3 years old, and 2669 (85.9%) patients were female. The follow-up period was 11.9 ± 4.6 (range, 1.2–19.6) years. A total of 183 secondary cancers, which included 162 solid and 21 hematologic cancers, occurred in 173 patients (5.6%). There was no significant difference between solid cancer incidence in our study population who underwent RIT and the overall Korean population, but the incidence of hematologic cancers and total cancer in our study was significantly higher compared with that of the Korean population. A multivariate analysis identified independent prognostic factors for the development of secondary cancer including age at 1st RIT, male, and total cumulative dose over 200 mCi. We need to assess the risk benefit for patients who receive over 200 mCi of a total cumulative dose.

Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common type of degenerative joint diseases that is regulated by a combination of complex intercellular signals and modulators, including non-coding RNAs. Mounting evidence suggests that miR-31-5p is physiologically involved in the regulation of chondrocytes, but the mechanism remains unclear. Methods: Expression levels of miR-31-5p and SOX4 in OA cartilage tissues and in IL-1β-stimulated chondrocytes were examined by quantification polymerase chain reaction (q-PCR) or immunohistochemistry assays. Cell proliferation and apoptosis were detected by Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) and flow cytometry assays, respectively. Expression of LC3 was detected using immunofluorescence staining. Expressions of autophagy-related proteins and extracellular regulated protein kinase (ERK)/mechanical target of rapamycin kinase (mTORC1) signal-related proteins were measured by Western blot analysis. Molecular interaction was validated by dual luciferase reporter assay. Results: Downregulation of miR-31-5p and upregulation of SOX4 were observed in both OA patients and OA chondrocytes. Mechanistic experiments revealed that miR-31-5p negatively modulated SOX4 expression by directly targeting its 3′- untranslated region. Moreover, overexpression of miR-31-5p suppressed the activation of mTORC1 in an ERK-dependent manner by inhibiting SOX4. Further functional experiments demonstrated that overexpressing miR-31-5p in OA chondrocytes markedly promoted its proliferation and autophagy while inhibiting apoptosis. However, these effects were abolished by overexpression of SOX4 or treatment with 3BDO, an mTOR activator. Conclusion: These results demonstrated that miR-31-5p enhanced survival and autophagy of OA chondrocytes through inactivation of mTORC1 via directly targeting SOX4, suggesting that miR-31-5p may play a protective role in OA progression.

Hypoxemia is 1 of the most common complications in the patients with acute Type A aortic dissection (ATAAD). This study aimed to summarize the risk factors, management strategies and long-term prognosis for postoperative hypoxemia in ATAAD patients. Baseline characteristics and clinical data of all the patients were collected. Patients were divided into 2 groups according to the PaO2/FiO2 after surgery: Hypoxemia group (n = 142) and Non-hypoxemia group (n = 68). The differences in gender, age, body mass index, operation time, cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) time, aortic cross-clamping time, deep hypothermic circulatory arrest time, preoperative PaO2/FiO2, postoperative PaO2/FiO2, PaO2/FiO2 before extubating, time of mechanical ventilation, length of intensive care unit stay, length of hospital stay, in-hospital mortality, and overall mortality were compared between the 2 groups. The incidence of postoperative hypoxemia in this study was 67.6% (142/210). body mass index (26.4 ± 3.8 vs 24.4 ± 3.3kg/m2, P .001) in the hypoxemia group were markedly higher and CPB time (196.3 ± 41.0 vs 181.0 ± 37.3 minutes, P = .010) in the hypoxemia group were significantly longer than those in the non-hypoxemia group. While preoperative PaO2/FiO2 (229.7 ± 91.4 vs 299.7 ± 101.2mmHg, P .001) was significantly lower than those in the non-hypoxemia group. In the hypoxemia group, PaO2/FiO2 before extubating was significantly higher than that after operation, and the difference was significant. Logistic regression analysis showed that overweight (odds ratio [OR]: 1.113, P = .030), CPB time (OR: 1.009, P = .043) and preoperative PaO2/FiO2 (OR: 0.994, P = .001) were independent risk factors for postoperative hypoxemia. Further follow-up results showed no significant difference in long-term mortality between the 2 groups. Logistic regression analysis revealed that PaO2/FiO2 before extubating (OR: 0.985, P .001), paraplegia (OR: 10.994, P = .019), acute renal failure (OR: 12.590, P .001), re-operation (OR: 4.721, P = .014) and re-admission to intensive care unit (OR: 13.727, P = .001) were independent risk factors for long-term mortality. Our results showed that overweight and prolonged CPB time were risk factors for postoperative hypoxemia in ATAAD patients. While PaO2/FiO2 before extubating were independent risk factors for long-term mortality, indicating that active correction of hypoxemia and maintain a higher PaO2/FiO2 before extubating may help to improve the prognosis of the ATAAD patients.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the globe. Both established cardiovascular disease (eCVD) and future CVD (fCVD) need to further explore the mechanisms. This article briefly introduces current major studies on axis and CVD, which were published in cardiovascular journals and non-cardiovascular journals (Table 1 & Table 2), and brings up and discusses the new origins of fCVD linking to major risk factors in early life due to unhealthy “environment-sleep-emotion-exercise-diet” intervention [E(e)SEEDi] lifestyle referred as to a “Golden Hoop Curse”, and the “brain-heart-gut” axis—a fresh theory on novel mechanisms of fCVD (Figure 1 & Figure 2), which are mediated by E(e)SEEDi lifestyle and microbiome. As a new theory, the “brain-heart-gut” axis will help us to earlier and better prevent and control both eCVD and fCVD with healthy E(e)SEEDi lifestyle.

Quinoa (Chenopodium quinoa Willd.), an Andean native crop, is increasingly popular around the world due to its high nutritional content and stress tolerance. The production and the popularity of this strategic global food are greatly restricted by many limiting factors, such as seed pre-harvest sprouting, bitter saponin, etc. To solve these problems, the underlying mechanism of seed maturation in quinoa needs to be investigated. In this study, based on the investigation of morphological characteristics, a quantitative analysis of its global proteome was conducted using the combinational proteomics of tandem mass tag (TMT) labeling and parallel reaction monitoring (PRM). The proteome changes related to quinoa seed maturation conversion were monitored to aid its genetic improvement. Typical changes of morphological characteristics were discovered during seed maturation, including mean grain diameter, mean grain thickness, mean hundred-grain weight, palea, episperm color, etc. With TMT proteomics analysis, 581 differentially accumulated proteins (DAPs) were identified. Functional classification analysis and Gene Ontology enrichment analysis showed that most DAPs involved in photosynthesis were downregulated, indicating low levels of photosynthesis. DAPs that participated in glycolysis, such as glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase, pyruvate decarboxylase, and alcohol dehydrogenase, were upregulated to fulfill the increasing requirement of energy consumption during maturation conversion. The storage proteins, such as globulins, legumins, vicilins, and oleosin, were also increased significantly during maturation conversion. Protein–protein interaction analysis and function annotation revealed that the upregulation of oleosin, oil body-associated proteins, and acyl-coenzyme A oxidase 2 resulted in the accumulation of oil in quinoa seeds. The downregulation of β-amyrin 28-oxidase was observed, indicating the decreasing saponin content, during maturation, which makes the quinoa “sweet”. By the PRM and qRT-PCR analysis, the expression patterns of most selected DAPs were consistent with the result of TMT proteomics. Our study enhanced the understanding of the maturation conversion in quinoa. This might be the first and most important step toward the genetic improvement of quinoa.

Background Abnormal activation of immune system is an important pathogenesis of Parkinson’s disease, but the relationship between peripheral inflammation, central microglia activation and dopaminergic degeneration remains unclear. Objectives To evaluate the brain regional microglia activation and its relationship with clinical severity, dopaminergic presynaptic function, and peripheral inflammatory biomarkers related to adaptive immunity. Methods In this case–control study, we recruited 23 healthy participants and 24 participants with early-stage Parkinson’s disease. 18F-PBR06 PET/MR for microglia activation, 18F-FP-DTBZ for dopaminergic denervation, total account of T cells and subpopulations of T helper (Th1/Th2/Th17) cells, and the levels of serum inflammatory cytokines were assessed. Sanger sequencing was used to exclude the mix-affinity binders of 18F-PBR06-PET. Results Compared to healthy controls, patients with Parkinson’s disease had an increased 18F-PBR06-PET standardized uptake value ratio (SUVR) in the putamen, particularly in the ipsilateral side of the motor onset. 18F-PBR06-PET SUVR was positively associated with 18F-FP-DTBZ-PET SUVR in the brainstem and not associated with disease severity measured by Hoehn and Yahr stage, MDS-UPDRS III scores. Patients with Parkinson’s disease had elevated frequencies of Th1 cells and serum levels of IL10 and IL17A as compared to healthy controls. No significant association between peripheral inflammation markers and microglia activation in the brain of PD was observed. Conclusion Parkinson’s disease is associated with early putaminal microglial activation and peripheral phenotypic Th1 bias. Peripheral adaptive immunity might be involved in microglia activation in the process of neurodegeneration in PD indirectly, which may be a potential biomarker for the early detection and the target for immunomodulating therapy.

Background. This study aimed at investigating whether the length of stay (LOS) in the emergency department (ED) is associated with mortality in elderly patients with infections admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU). Delayed admission to the ICU may be associated with adverse clinical outcomes in elderly patients with infections. Methods. This was a retrospective study conducted with subjects over 65 years of age admitted to the ICU from 5 EDs. We recorded demographic data, clinical findings, initial laboratory results, and ED LOS. Outcomes were all-cause in-hospital mortality and hospital LOS. A multivariable regression model was applied to identify factors predictive of mortality. Results. A total of 439 patients admitted to the ICU via the ED were included in this study, 132 (30.1%) of whom died in the hospital. The median (IQR) age was 78 (73, 83) years. In multivariable analysis, a history of malignancy (OR: 3.76; 95% CI: 1.88–7.52; p < 0.001 ), high lactate level (OR: 1.13; 95% CI: 1.01–1.27; p = 0.039 ), and ED LOS (OR: 1.01; 95% CI: 1.00–1.02; p = 0.039 ) were independent risk factors for all-cause in-hospital admission. Elderly patients with an ED LOS >12 hours had a longer hospital LOS ( p = 0.018 ), and those with an ED LOS > 24 hours had a longer hospital LOS and higher mortality rate ( p = 0.044 , p = 0.008 ). Conclusions. This study shows that prolonged ED LOS is independently associated with all-cause in-hospital mortality in elderly patients with infections requiring ICU admission. ED LOS should be considered in strategies to prevent adverse outcomes in elderly patients with infections who visit the ED.

This study aimed to investigate the efficacy of the combination of neuron-specific enolase (NSE) measurement and initial neurological examination in predicting the neurological outcomes of patients with cardiac arrest (CA) by retrospectively analyzing data from the Korean Hypothermia Network prospective registry. NSE levels were recorded at 48 and 72 h after CA. The initial Full Outline of UnResponsiveness (FOUR) and Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) scores were recorded. These variables were categorized using the scorecard method. The primary endpoint was poor neurological outcomes at 6 months. Of the 475 patients, 171 (36%) had good neurological outcomes at 6 months. The areas under the curve (AUCs) of the categorized NSE levels at 72 h, GCS score, and FOUR score were 0.889, 0.722, and 0.779, respectively. The AUCs of the combinations of categorized NSE levels at 72 h with categorized GCS scores and FOUR score were 0.910 and 0.912, respectively. Each combination was significantly higher than the AUC value of the categorized NSE level at 72 h alone (with GCS: p = 0.015; with FOUR: p = 0.026). Combining NSE measurement and initial neurological examination improved the prediction of neurological outcomes.

In patients with acute ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), it is essential to restore myocardial perfusion as soon as possible. However, a considerable proportion of patients have no-reflow. No-reflow increases the risk of major adverse cardiac events and even death. The role of blood eosinophil count in predicting no-reflow in STEMI patients has not been determined, particularly after primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI). The present study aimed to evaluate the predictive value of eosinophil counts for no-reflow in patients with STEMI who underwent pPCI. A total of 674 STEMI patients who underwent pPCI were enrolled. The subjects were divided into two groups according to eosinophil counts for primary analysis and with or without T2DM for secondary analysis. Logistic regression analysis was used to determine whether eosinophil count was an independent predictor of no-reflow in the entire cohort, and subgroup and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were explored to evaluate its predictive value. DeLong’s test was used to compare the area under curves of the three ROC curves. The low eosinophil count was an independent predictor for no-reflow in whole cohort (adjusted OR: 2.012, 95% CI 1.242–3.259, p = 0.004) and in patients with T2DM (adjusted OR: 4.312, 95% CI 1.878–9.900, p = 0.001). In patients without T2DM, hemoglobin, but not low eosinophil count, was an independent predictor of no-reflow. The results of the ROC curve analysis revealed that a low eosinophil count had moderate predictive efficiency for predicting no-reflow in patients with T2DM, and the power was superior to all populations and patients without T2DM. Our data suggest that decreased eosinophil count was an independent risk factor for no-reflow in patients with STEMI who underwent pPCI, especially in T2DM patients, which provides guidance for clinicians to identify patients at a higher risk of developing no-reflow and lowering their risk.

Background Although proximal femoral nail anti-rotation (PFNA) and bipolar hemiarthroplasty (BHA) are selected by most of the orthopaedic surgeons for elderly intertrochanteric fractures (ITFs) patients, there is still no consensus on the superiority of PFNA and BPH for the elderly with unstable comminuted ITFs. The study aims to compare the curative effects of PFNA and cementless BHA on unstable comminuted ITFs in the elderly. Methods From January 2012 to December 2016, we retrospectively reviewed 62 ITFs patients up to the inclusion and exclusion criteria in the study. Depending on the type of surgery, the patients were divided into two groups: Group BHA (n= 30) and Group PFNA (n = 32). The ITFs were classified according to Evans-Jensen. Hospitalization time, operation time, bleeding loss, weight bearing duration, Harris hip scores, 10-m walking speed, gait and postoperative complications were compared between the two groups. Results There was no significant difference between the groups in hospital stay (P > 0.05). The BHA group trended to have a shorter operation time and a larger volume of blood loss (P P P P > 0.05). There was no significant difference in postoperative complications between the two groups (P > 0.05). Conclusion The BHA allows an earlier return to weight-bearing activity, but ultimately has the same effective treatments as the PFNA for the elderly with unstable comminuted ITFs.

Iron is an essential micro-element, involved in multiple biological activities in vertebrates. Excess iron accumulation has been identified as an important mediator of lipid deposition. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unknown. In the present study, we found that a high-iron diet significantly increased intestinal iron content and upregulated the mRNA expression of two iron transporters (zip14 and fpn1). Intestinal iron overload increased lipogenesis, reduced lipolysis and promoted oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction. Iron-induced lipid accumulation was mediated by hypoxia-inducible factor-1 α (HIF1α), which was induced in response to mitochondrial oxidative stress following inhibition of prolyl hydroxylase 2 (PHD2). Mechanistically, iron promoted lipid deposition by enhancing the DNA binding capacity of HIF1α to the pparγ and fas promoters. Our results provide experimental evidence that oxidative stress, mitochondrial dysfunction and the HIF1α-PPARγ pathway are critical mediators of iron-induced lipid deposition.

This study aimed to investigate whether endostatin, a crucial anti-angiogenic factor, plays a negative role in angiogenesis and osteogenesis and aggravates the progression of osteonecrosis of the femoral head induced by steroid use in a rabbit model.66 New Zealand white rabbits were randomly divided into four groups: glucocorticoid model (GC) group (GC group, n = 18), glucocorticoid model and endostatin group (GC;ES group, n = 18), ES group (ES group, n = 18), and blank control group (CON group, n = 12). In the GC group, 10 μg/ kg lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was intravenously injected into the ear margin, and 24h after LPS injection, 20 mg/kg GC methylprednisolone (MPS) was injected into the gluteus muscle three times, each time at an interval of 24h. The animals of the GC;ES group were given as same treatment as the GC group, except for the addition of ES. MPS was not used in the ES group and CON group. ES group was only given ES, while the CON group was only given the same amount of normal saline. All animals successfully established models of femoral head necrosis, and then the difference among the Immunohistochemistry, Quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) analysis, Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, Biomechanical test, etracyclline-calcein double labeling, and Van Gieson staining indices were compared among the four groups.The combination of MPS and LPS was successful in establishing the femoral head necrosis model in New Zealand white rabbits. The incidence of osteonecrosis after MPS and LPS intervention was 70% (7/10), while that plus ES was 100% (10/10). At the same time, after MPS and LPS intervention, while the empty bone lacuna rate of the femoral head was significantly increased, the number of osteo- blasts was decreased. Also, the expressions of CD31 positive cells, Runx2, Osterix, COL1A1, and VEGF mRNA in the femoral head were decreased, and the levels of osteogenesis-related protein b-ALP, OCN, and angiogenic factor VEGF in the femoral head were decreased. The percentage of the trabecular bone area (%Tb.Ar), trabecular thickness (Tb.Th), trabecular number (Tb.N), labeled perimeter percent (%L.Pm), mineral apposition rate (MAR), and bone formation rate (BFR/BS) in the femoral head after MPs and LPS intervention detected by tetracycline calcein double labeling and Van Gieson staining decreased significantly, except trabecular separation (Tb.Sp) increased significantly. The compressive strength (CS), elastic modulus (EM), and strain energy (SE) of the femoral head examed by biomechanical measurement decreased significantly. All the above changes were more obvious after adding ES intervention. ES mRNA in the femoral head was undifferentiated and increased in the GC, ES, and GC;ES group compared with group CON.This study has revealed that ES can inhibit angiogenesis and osteogenesis in the femoral head and aggravate the occurrence and development of femoral head necrosis. Thus, antiangiogenic factors may play an important role in the pathogenesis of ONFH.

With the development of cellular, chemical, and molecular biology, such as, single-cell, single-molecule, single-nucleus, single-chromosome and other related biotechnologies for analysis of chromatin regions, and under the help of single-nucleus and single-cell transcriptomics of human diseases in cardiovascular system, there are many novel breakthroughs in the field of life science and medicine. It can be said that a new “single” era of biomedicine comes. As transforming medical research tools at single-cell levels, single-cell technologies including single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) provide high-resolutions insight into complex tissues covered cardiovascular and brain systems, they can help to understand molecular mechanisms of both COVID-19 and cardiovascular disease (CVD), such as atherosclerosis (AS), acute myocardial infarction (AMI), arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy (ACM), inherited thoracic aortic aneurysm (iTAA) or ascending thoracic aortic aneurysm (ATAA), calcific aortic valve disease, heart failure, and others as well as develop novel therapeutic targets and approaches relevant for CVD and COVID-19.

ObjectiveTo analyze the ultrasonic characteristics of false-negative and false-positive results of shear wave elastography (SWE) in the diagnosis of thyroid nodules to clarify the influence of nodular characteristics on SWE and to guide the clinical application of SWE.MethodsA total of 435 thyroid nodules from 343 patients with the diagnosis confirmed by surgical pathology were analyzed. Preoperative ultrasonography and SWE were conducted. The conventional ultrasound characteristics of thyroid nodules and the maximum Young’s modulus were recorded. The false negativity and false positivity of SWE for the diagnosis of thyroid nodules were calculated. The ultrasonic characteristics of thyroid nodules with SWE false results were analyzed, and logistic regression analysis was adopted to determine the ultrasonic characteristics associated with SWE false results of thyroid nodules.ResultsAmong 323 malignant nodules, the SWE false negativity was 27.2% (88/323). The false positivity of SWE in 112 benign nodules was 19.6% (22/112). Regression analysis showed that an increase in the nodule volume increased the risk of SWE false-positive results (odds ratio [OR] 3.286; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.572–6.871; P = 0.002) and decreased the risk of false-negative results (OR 0.238; 95% CI: 0.115–0.493; P < 0.001). Nodules with coarse calcification had an increased risk of SWE false-positive results compared with those without calcification (OR 5.303; 95% CI: 1.098–25.619; P = 0.038). However, nodules with scattered hyperechoic foci had a reduced risk of SWE false-negative results (OR 0.515; 95% CI: 0.280–0.951; P = 0.034).ConclusionNodular size and calcification were correlated with SWE false results, and the clinical application of SWE should be combined with conventional ultrasound features. Fine needle aspiration or a puncture biopsy should be conducted if necessary.

This article introduces current status of COVID-19 and its side-effects, and reviews emerging protective measures and strategies from lifestyle to traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for fighting against the SARS-CoV-2 and its major variants (Delta and Omicron) as well as the global COVID-19 pandemic, which include “Carassius auratus lifestyle” for high effective isolation, social and high-tech related medical strategies, traditional Chinese herbs “Bark-Flower-Fruit-Grass-Leaf-Nucleolus-Root (BFFGLNR)”, as well the combination of Chinese and western medicine. As a choice, little is known whether Chinese acupuncture is an effective method for confirmed and suspected COVID-19 patients, which include imported and asymptomatic cases. Definitely, acupuncture is effective for the recovery of COVID-19 cases. However, its effects and related mechanisms need further animal experiments and clinical trials to confirm and disclose. In conclusion, these emerging protective measures and strategies for COVID-19 will help to effectively combat the SARS-CoV-2 and its variants during the pandemic and post-COVID-19 era.

BACKGROUND: The extent to which health care systems have adapted to the COVID-19 pandemic to provide necessary cardiac diagnostic services is unknown.OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the impact of the pandemic on cardiac testing practices, volumes and types of diagnostic services, and perceived psychological stress to health care providers worldwide.METHODS: The International Atomic Energy Agency conducted a worldwide survey assessing alterations from baseline in cardiovascular diagnostic care at the pandemic's onset and 1 year later. Multivariable regression was used to determine factors associated with procedure volume recovery.RESULTS: Surveys were submitted from 669 centers in 107 countries. Worldwide reduction in cardiac procedure volumes of 64% from March 2019 to April 2020 recovered by April 2021 in high- and upper middle-income countries (recovery rates of 108% and 99%) but remained depressed in lower middle- and low-income countries (46% and 30% recovery). Although stress testing was used 12% less frequently in 2021 than in 2019, coronary computed tomographic angiography was used 14% more, a trend also seen for other advanced cardiac imaging modalities (positron emission tomography and magnetic resonance; 22%-25% increases). Pandemic-related psychological stress was estimated to have affected nearly 40% of staff, impacting patient care at 78% of sites. In multivariable regression, only lower-income status and physicians' psychological stress were significant in predicting recovery of cardiac testing.CONCLUSIONS: Cardiac diagnostic testing has yet to recover to prepandemic levels in lower-income countries. Worldwide, the decrease in standard stress testing is offset by greater use of advanced cardiac imaging modalities. Pandemic-related psychological stress among providers is widespread and associated with poor recovery of cardiac testing.

Background During cardiac arrest (CA) and after cardiopulmonary resuscitation, activation of blood coagulation and inadequate endogenous fibrinolysis occur. The aim of this study was to describe the time course of coagulation abnormalities after out-of-hospital CA (OHCA) and to examine the association with clinical outcomes in patients undergoing targeted temperature management (TTM) after OHCA. Methods This prospective, multicenter, observational cohort study was performed in eight emergency departments in Korea between September 2018 and September 2019. Laboratory findings from hospital admission and 24 hours after return of spontaneous circulation (ROSC) were analyzed. The primary outcome was cerebral performance category (CPC) at discharge, and the secondary outcome was in-hospital mortality. Results A total of 170 patients were included in this study. The lactic acid, prothrombin time (PT), activated partial thrombin time (aPTT), international normalized ratio (INR), and D-dimer levels were higher in patients with poor neurological outcomes at admission and 24 h after ROSC. The lactic acid and D-dimer levels decreased over time, while fibrinogen increased over time. PT, aPTT, and INR did not change over time. The PT at admission and D-dimer levels 24 h after ROSC were associated with neurological outcomes at hospital discharge. Coagulation-related factors were moderately correlated with the duration of time from collapse to ROSC. Conclusion The time-dependent changes in coagulation-related factors are diverse. Among coagulation-related factors, PT at admission and D-dimer levels 24 h after ROSC were associated with poor neurological outcomes at hospital discharge in patients treated with TTM.

Aim The aim of this study was to probe the rigorousness of the factor structure of the HDSMI and to test the instrument's construct validity. Design Cross‐sectional study. Methods The hemodialysis unit of four hospitals in Taiwan provided data from 628 patients with end‐stage renal disease (ESRD), through the period of September to December in 2012. The patients were divided into a calibration sample for CFA and model modification, and a validation sample for cross‐validation of the postmodification model. Goodness of fit was tested with standard fit indices. Results The four latent variables (i.e. partnership, self‐care, problem‐solving and emotional management) were verified as dimensions of HDSMI through CFA. The construct validity of the HDSMI was improved by omitting two items, allowing one inter‐item correlation and transferring the loading of one item. These modifications improved fit indices of the calibration sample. Cross‐validation of the validation sample verified the construct validity of the modified HDSMI‐18.

The overuse of agrochemicals for agricultural productivity to meet the global food demand of the rapidly growing human population is a great environmental threat, particularly for aquatic ecosystems. Being associated intimately with plant health, growth, and productivity, the plant microbiome is emerging as a promising environmentally friendly and sustainable resource for agricultural productivity. For the past decades, our understanding of the interactions between plants and microorganisms and our knowledge of how to improve the plant microbiome by using microbial inoculants has increased significantly. A better understanding of the impact of the plant microbiome on mineral resources will benefit plant and soil health. In this review, we highlight the importance of microbial inoculants and their interactions with mineral fertilizers in enhancing crop productivity, as well as current challenges.

OBJECTIVES We compared the diagnostic performance of C-11 acetate and F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) PET/computed tomography (CT) for the detection of extrahepatic metastasis in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and evaluated whether the improvement in the diagnostic performance of dual tracer PET/CT differs by the metastatic site. METHODS Fifty-eight patients who had extrahepatic metastasis on either C-11 acetate or F-18 FDG PET/CT were enrolled, and 193 metastatic lesions were analyzed in this retrospective study. The metastatic lesions were categorized based on six sites of involvement. According to each involved site, the tracer avidity of the metastatic lesions was compared using the maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmax). RESULTS Bone was the most frequent categorized metastatic site (44.8%), followed by lymph node (39.7%), lung (34.5%), soft tissue (27.6%), adrenal gland (6.9%), and vascular category (3.4%). C-11 acetate PET/CT showed a higher SUVmax than F-18 FDG PET/CT in metastatic bone lesions (P = 0.003). F-18 FDG uptake was significantly higher than C-11 acetate uptake in metastatic lymph node lesions (P
