204. The Effect of Surfactants on Nocardia Foaming in Activated Sludge

Abstract

Biodegradation experiments of the non-ionic surfactants Igepal C-620 (an alkyl-phenol ethoxylate) and Neodol 25-7 (an alcohol ethoxylate) were performed, and biodegradation assessed by concentration, foam potential and surface tension measurements. Igepal C-62 0 biodegraded much slower than Neodol 25-7. The foaming of activated sludge was significantly enhanced by the presence of surfactants, but surfactants alone could not generate a stable foam if the sludge did not contain Nocardia cells. It was also found that products of surfactant biodegradation which were not detected by standard non-ionic surfactant analysis method (CTAS) might still possess some foam-enhancing ability. The results indicate that slowly biodegradable surfactants can enhance the foaming of Nocardia-containing sludge and increase the trapping of Nocardia foam in activated sludge plants.

Abstract

Solids retention time (SRT), biological scum trapping and recycle, and the dynamic equilibrium between Nocardioform populations in the foam and the mixed liquor are the controlling factors in activated sludge foaming events caused by Nocardioform bacteria. For the operating modes described in this paper, a cured mixed liquor foaming condition (filament counts of approximately 10(5) intersections/g volatile suspended solids) was only achieved when SRT control, selective wasting, and polymer addition were in effect. Solids retention time control, with the SRT remaining below 1.5 days, and selective wasting will cure a severely foaming mixed liquor, but effects will only be observed after 3 or 4 months after implementation. The combined wastage of Nocardioform bacteria from selective wasting and SRT control can ensure long-term foam control to the operation of a pure-oxygen activated sludge system with foam-trapping features. An SRT of 0.3 days will result in the complete washout of Nocardioform bacteria from the activated sludge system, which can then operate at an SRT of 3 days free of Nocardioform. Polymer addition to mixed liquor is only effective for foam control when a large portion of the system biomass exists as a heavy layer of foam above the mixed liquor.

Abstract

Image-based rendering takes advantage of the bounded display resolution to limit the rendering complexity for very large datasets. However, imagebased rendering also suffers from several drawbacks that polygon-based rendering does not. These include the inability to change the illumination and material properties of objects, screen-based querying of object-specific properties in databases, and unrestricted viewer movement without visual artifacts such as visibility gaps. View-dependent rendering has emerged as another solution for hierarchical and interactive rendering of large polygon-based visualization datasets. In this paper we study the relative advantages and disadvantages of these approaches to learn how best to combine these competing techniques towards a hierarchical, robust, and hybrid rendering system for large data visualization.

Abstract

This paper describes the concept of double quaternions, an extension of quaternions, and shows how they can be used for effective three-dimensional motion interpolation. Motion interpolation using double quaternions has several advantages over the method of interpolating rotation and translation independently and then combining the results. First, double quaternions provide a conceptual framework that allows one to handle rotational and translational components in a unified manner. Second, results obtained by using double quaternions are coordinate frame invariant. Third, double quaternions allow a natural way to tradeoff robustness against accuracy. Fourth, double quaternions, being a straightforward extension of quaternions, can be integrated into several existing systems that currently use quaternions with translational components, with a only small coding effort.

Abstract

Background: The pro-apoptotic protein Siva-1 functions in both extrinsic and intrinsic cell death signaling; however, the exact contribution of the endogenous Siva-1 to DNA damage-induced apoptosis is unclear. Using cisplatin, a chemotherapeutic drug, to induce DNA damage and cell death, we determined the role of Siva-1. Methods: Cisplatin treated HCT116 colorectal carcinoma cells (p53+/+ and -/-) were used in the study. With the help of recombinant lentivirus that can express siSiva (siRNA that specifically targets Siva-1), we also generated Siva-1 knockdown HCT116 cells. Apoptosis was determined by tetramethyl rhodamine methyl ester (TMRM) staining and propidium iodide (PI) staining. Results: Treatment with cisplatin induced Siva-1 expression in a p53 dependent manner. In Siva-1 knockdown p53+/+ HCT116 colorectal carcinoma cells, loss of Siva-1 expression conferred significant resistance to cisplatin-induced apoptosis. Although Siva-1 levels were positively regulated by p53, Siva-1-induced apoptosis did not require p53. Despite the fact that Siva-1 lacks even a minimal BH3 domain, similar to other proapoptotic Bcl2 family members induced by p53, we showed that Siva-1 mediated apoptosis is characterized by Bax oligomerization and cytochrome c leakage from mitochondria. The putative amphipathic helical region in Siva-1 (SAH) appeared to function analogously to a BH3 domain. Conclusion: The p53 induced Siva-1 is one of the effector molecules, which plays a significant role in DNA damage-induced cell death.
