Abstract

A new type of cool thermal storage, based on solid-liquid-vapor multiple phase transformation operation, has been introduced. In this process, ice is made for cool thermal storage at reduced pressure during off-peak power consumption hours and melted for producing chilled water during on-peak power consumption hours. The phenomena of ice storage, produced by vacuum freezing of water with sublimation of ice at the free surface, have been investigated. The equations for estimating the temperature-time history in the ice layer have been derived. The penetration distance of solidification from the original surface is also obtained from the mass balance. The estimation of the capacity of cool thermal storage has been illustrated with a constant-volume rate of sublimation as parameter.

Abstract

Neuroendocrine neoplasms (NENs) are a rare heterogeneous group of neoplasms that arise from neuroendocrine cells. Unknown-primary NENs (UP-NENs) are particularly challenging to diagnose and treat. Techniques such as immunohistochemical stains, functional imaging studies, and molecular cancer classifier assays may help clinicians identify the origin of a tumor. However, numerous medical facilities lack the necessary medical equipment, such as functional imaging scanning, to provide patients with a complete primary tumor survey. Even these tests are not enough to determine the original tumor in some cases. The present case series described the diagnosis and treatment outcomes of patients with UP-NEN in a single institution. The medical records of four patients treated between November 2012 and January 2022 were retrospectively reviewed and clinical symptoms, diagnostic methods, image findings and treatment modalities were considered. All patients were diagnosed having functional UP-NENs by using a short-acting somatostatin test. These patients were treated with long-acting release somatostatin analogs along with a positive result. Short-acting somatostatin is an alternatively simple method to determine if a patient has UP-NENs that are functional or expresses somatostatin receptors in the absence of imaging scanning. 250. Hypoadiponectinemia correlates with arterial stiffness in kidney transplantation patients.

Abstract

Background: Adiponectin is a fat-derived hormone produced and secreted exclusively by adipocytes that have anti-atherosclerotic effects. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between fasting serum adiponectin levels and arterial stiffness among kidney transplant (KT) patients. Methods: Fasting blood samples were obtained from 69 KT patients. Brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV) was measured in the right or left brachial artery to the ankle segments using an automatic pulse wave analyzer. Plasma adiponectin levels were measured using a commercial enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit. Left or right baPWV values of >14.0 m/s were used to define the high arterial stiffness group. Results: Thirty-five KT patients (35/69; 50.7 %) were defined in high arterial stiffness group. Diabetes ( P = 0.013), smoking ( P = 0.001), KT duration ( P < 0.001), body weight ( P = 0.013), waist circumference ( P = 0.013), body mass index ( P = 0.001), fasting glucose ( P = 0.013), systolic blood pressure ( P < 0.001), diastolic blood pressure ( P = 0.008), and pulse pressure ( P = 0.003) were higher, while serum adiponectin level ( P = 0.004) was lower in high arterial stiffness group compared with low arterial stiffness group. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that adiponectin (odds ratio 0.90, 95 % confidence interval 0.81-0.99, P = 0.034) was still the independent predictors of arterial stiffness among the KT patients. Conclusion: Serum fasting adiponectin level was inversely associated with arterial stiffness among KT patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
