This report summarizes the present status of neutrino non-standard interactions (NSI). After a brief overview, several aspects of NSIs are discussed, including connection to neutrino mass models, model-building and phenomenology of large NSI with both light and heavy mediators, NSI phenomenology in both short- and long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments, neutrino cross-sections, complementarity of NSI with other low- and high-energy experiments, fits with neutrino oscillation and scattering data, DUNE sensitivity to NSI, effective field theory of NSI, as well as the relevance of NSI to dark matter and cosmology. We also discuss the open questions and interesting future directions that can be pursued by the community at large. This report is based on talks and discussions during the Neutrino Theory Network NSI workshop held at Washington University in St.~Louis from May 29-31, 2019

BackgroundThe apamin-sensitive small-conductance calcium-activated K (SK) current IKAS modulates automaticity of the sinus node. IKAS blockade by apamin causes sinus bradycardia.ObjectiveThe purpose of this study was to test the hypothesis that IKAS modulates ventricular automaticity.MethodsWe tested the effects of apamin (100 nM) on ventricular escape rhythms in Langendorff-perfused rabbit ventricles with atrioventricular block (protocol 1) and on recorded transmembrane action potential of pseudotendons of superfused right ventricular endocardial preparations (protocol 2).ResultsAll preparations exhibited spontaneous ventricular escape rhythms. In protocol 1, apamin decreased the atrial rate from 186.2 ± 18.0 bpm to 163.8 ± 18.7 bpm (N = 6; P = .006) but accelerated the ventricular escape rate from 51.5 ± 10.7 bpm to 98.2 ± 25.4 bpm (P = .031). Three preparations exhibited bursts of nonsustained ventricular tachycardia and pauses, resulting in repeated burst termination pattern. In protocol 2, apamin increased the ventricular escape rate from 70.2 ± 13.1 bpm to 110.1 ± 2.2 bpm (P = .035). Spontaneous phase 4 depolarization was recorded from the pseudotendons in 6 of 10 preparations at baseline and in 3 in the presence of apamin. There were no changes of phase 4 slope (18.37 ± 3.55 mV/s vs 18.93 ± 3.26 mV/s, N = 3; P = .231, ), but the threshold of phase 0 activation (mV) reduced from -67.97 ± 1.53 to -75.26 ± 0.28 (P = .034). Addition of JTV-519, a ryanodine receptor 2 stabilizer, in 5 preparations reduced escape rate back to baseline.ConclusionContrary to its bradycardic effect in the sinus node, IKAS blockade by apamin accelerates ventricular automaticity and causes repeated nonsustained ventricular tachycardia in normal ventricles. ryanodine receptor 2 blockade reversed the apamin effects on ventricular automaticity.

Background: Subcortical volumetric abnormalities in schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder (MDD) have been consistently found on a single-diagnosis basis in previous studies. However, whether such volumetric abnormalities are specific to a particular disorder or shared by other disorders remains unclear. Methods: We analyzed the structural MRIs of 160 patients with schizophrenia, 160 patients with bipolar disorder, 160 patients with MDD and 160 healthy controls. We calculated the volumes of the thalamus, hippocampus, amygdala, accumbens, putamen, caudate, pallidum and lateral ventricles using FreeSurfer 7.0 and compared them among the groups using general linear models. Results: We found a significant group effect on the volumes of the thalamus, hippocampus, accumbens and pallidum. Further post hoc analysis revealed that thalamic volumes in patients with schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and MDD were significantly reduced compared to those in healthy controls, but did not differ from one another. Patients with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder also shared a significant reduction in hippocampal volumes. Among the 3 clinical groups, patients with schizophrenia showed significantly lower hippocampal volumes and higher pallidal volumes than patients with bipolar disorder and MDD. Limitations: Differences in psychotropic use and duration of illness among the patient groups may limit the interpretation of our findings. Conclusion: Our findings indicate that decreased thalamic volume is a common feature of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and MDD. Background: Frontal asymmetry plays a major role in depression. However, patients with treatment-resistant depression (TRD) have widespread hypofrontality. We investigated whether patients with TRD have a characteristic frontal activation pattern in functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) findings and how the frontal cortex responds to different levels of cognitive tasks. Methods: We enrolled 27 right-handed patients with TRD, 27 patients without TRD and 27 healthy controls. We used multichannel fNIRS to evaluate activation of the bilateral dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC) and left motor area in response to 3 tasks: finger tapping, a low cognitive-load motor task; verbal fluency, a moderate cognitive-load task; and a dual task involving simultaneous finger tapping and verbal fluency, a high cognitive-load task. Results: We found significant between-group differences in left DLPFC activation for all 3 tasks. The healthy controls had cortical activation in the left motor area during finger tapping and the bilateral frontal cortex during the dual task. However, patients without TRD had right VLPFC activation during finger tapping and left DLPFC activation during the dual task. Patients with TRD had bilateral DLPFC activation during finger tapping but exhibited increased bilateral VLPFC and left motor area activation during verbal fluency and increased left motor area activation during the dual task. In healthy controls and patients without TRD, we found that the right VLPFC was positively correlated with depression severity. Limitations: Our cohort included only patients with late-onset depression. Conclusion: We found different patterns of abnormal frontal activation between patients with and without TRD. In patients without TRD, the right prefrontal cortex (PFC) was recruited during simple motor tasks. ADHD comorbidity has been associated with delayed diagnosis of ASD, but no study has investigated this association in an Asian country. Children with ASD were included and divided into three groups: ADHD before ASD, ADHD same/after ASD, and ASD only. Timing of ASD and ADHD diagnoses were assessed. The logistic regression model was performed to investigate the likelihood of being diagnosed with ASD after 6 years of age between three groups. ADHD before ASD (OR 10.93) group was more likely to being diagnosed with ASD after 6 years of age compared with ADHD same/after ASD (OR: 1.37) and ASD only groups. ADHD comorbidity would delay the diagnosis of ASD in the general clinical settings in Taiwan.

Objectives: Previous studies have demonstrated poor oral hygiene in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, the association between ADHD and periodontitis is still unclear. Methods: In all, 16,211 adolescents with ADHD and 162,110 age- and sex-matched controls participated in the study between 2001 and 2011. To identify the occurrence of periodontitis, the participants were followed up till the end of 2011. Confounding factors, including smoking, diabetes, and depressive disorder, were assessed and adjusted in the Cox regression models. Results: Adolescents with ADHD (HR : 2.29) were more likely to develop periodontitis later in life than controls. We additionally observed the beneficial effect of atomoxetine (HR : 0.42) on the periodontitis risk among adolescents with ADHD. However, this finding should be interpreted cautiously given the small sample (n = 290) of children taking atomoxetine in the present study. Conclusions: ADHD is an independent risk factor for subsequent periodontitis development. Oral health should be closely monitored in adolescents with ADHD. Future investigation of the shared pathomechanisms between periodontitis and ADHD is warranted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article discusses a case of neurosarcoidosis in a 54-year-old female patient with a history of sarcoidosis. The patient experienced visual hallucinations and dizziness, leading to a diagnosis of neurosarcoidosis. Treatment with low-dose methylprednisolone pulse therapy followed by oral methylprednisolone resulted in rapid remission. The case highlights the importance of prompt diagnosis, personalized treatment, and shared decision-making in managing neurosarcoidosis, with a focus on patient-centered care. The successful outcome suggests that dose de-intensification strategies could be beneficial for other neurosarcoidosis patients, potentially influencing future treatment guidelines. Background: Children with dental caries are treated with stainless steel metal crowns (SSC), but the aesthetics and precision still need to be improved. Currently, both 3D‐printed resin crowns (PRC) and computer‐aided design/computer‐aided manufacture (CAD/CAM) resin crowns (CRC) meet the clinical requirements for crown applications in terms of strength, production time, cost, and aesthetics. Aim: This study replaced SSC with customized resin crowns by 3D printing and CAD/CAM. Design: In this study, PRC, CRC, and SSC were used for incisor and molar restorations, and 60 crowns were made with 10 for each group. The fabrication efficiency, surface characteristics, marginal fit, and stability of the two different crowns were evaluated. Results: PRC and CRC show superior color and surface characteristics, though production times are longer (5.3–12.4 times and 3.3–9.1 times, respectively) than for SSC (p <.05). They, however, can be completed within 80 min. Edge gaps for PRC and CRC are significantly lower (13.0–19.2 times and 13.0–13.7 times) than for SSC (p <.05). All materials exhibit good stability. Conclusion: The 3D‐PRCs and CAD/CAM resin crowns may replace SSCs as a potential choice for clinical child caries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aim: Evidence suggests an association between maternal hypothyroidism and risk of attention‐deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) or autism spectrum disorder (ASD) in offspring. We examined the risk of ASD and ADHD in individuals with congenital hypothyroidism (CHT). Methods: A nationwide population‐based cohort study enrolled a total of 1260 children younger than 12 years with a confirmed diagnosis of CHT and no prior diagnosis of any neurodevelopmental disorders, selected from the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan between 1998 to 2013. In addition, 12,600 controls matched for sex, age, and residence were selected. Cox proportional hazards analysis was used to investigate the association among CHT, ASD, and ADHD. Results: Children with CHT were associated with a higher incidence of ASD (7.1‰ vs 1.3‰, P < 0.001) and ADHD (39.7‰ vs 18.7‰, P < 0.001) than the control group. Cox regression analyses demonstrated that children with CHT were associated with elevated risks of ASD (hazard ratio [HR], 4.72 [95% confidence interval (CI), 2.08–10.70]) and ADHD (HR, 2.03 [95% CI, 1.49–2.77]), after adjusting for demographic data and family history of major psychiatric disorders, compared with the control group. Conclusion: Children with CHT were associated with approximately a two‐fold increased risk of ADHD and a four‐fold increased risk of ASD than the control group. A strategy to access fluorinated spiroindolenines has been developed, involving a selective functionalization of indoles with fluorinated moieties and subsequent catalytic dearomatization. Trifluomethylthio (SCF3), diethyl phosphono(difluoromethyl)thio (SCF2P(O)(OEt)2) and (phenylsulfonyl)difluoromethyl (CF2SO2Ph) groups were embedded at the C2 position of indole derivatives substituted with alkynes, allenes, and allyl carbonate moieties at the C3 position. A gold‐catalyzed cycloisomerization gave access to five spiroindolenines, and an enantioselective palladium catalyzed cyclization provided 10 fluorinated spirocyclic products with up to 77% ee. The alkylation of nucleophiles is among the most fundamental and well‐developed transformations in chemistry. However, to achieve selective alkylation of complex substrates remains a nontrivial task. We report herein a general and selective alkylation method without using strong acids, bases, or metals. In this method, the readily available phosphinites/phosphites, in combination with ethyl acrylate, function as effective alkylating agents. Various nucleophilic groups, including alcohols, phenols, carboxylic acids, imides, and thiols can be alkylated. This method can be applied in the late‐stage alkylation of natural products and pharmaceutical agents, achieving chemo‐ and site‐selective modification of complex substrates. Experimental studies indicate the relative reactivity of a nucleophile depends on its acidity and its steric environment. Background/Objectives: To update the perspectives of the association between diabetes (DM) and adhesive capsulitis (AC). Methods: Our findings were summarized in a narrative review. We searched PubMed, Embase, and Consensus databases, using keywords such as "diabetes", "adhesive capsulitis", and "frozen shoulder", for articles published from January 2015 to June 2024, covering both type 1 and type 2 DM. Results: After compiling relevant articles on DM-related AC published since 2015, we found that most studies show an increased prevalence of AC in DM patients, ranging from 3 to 10 times. A longer duration of DM is a risk factor for AC. Whether T1DM or prolonged insulin use will increase the risk of AC is still controversial. Poor blood sugar control seems to increase the risk of AC. Recent studies also show a correlation between blood sugar levels and the prevalence of AC. Cytokines, such as IL-6, IL-8, TNF-α, VEGF, and AGEs, related to inflammation and fibrosis may contribute to the pathophysiological processes of AC. Conclusions: Recent research findings have revealed new perspectives divergent from past notions, while also presenting some topics worthy of exploration. Due the close relationship between DM and AC, clinicians need to be alert to the presence of AC, especially early stage, in DM cases, and control the blood glucose level to reduce the risk of AC. Insecticide resistance in Plutella xylostella (Linnaeus) (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) is a major constraint on the global production of cruciferous crops. For effective management of insecticide resistance, it is necessary to develop a molecular detection tool for predicting insecticide resistance levels based on the mutation frequency of target sites. In this study, a susceptible strain (SHggt) of P. xylostella was subjected to chlorantraniliprole and tetraniliprole selection under laboratory conditions to obtain the CHLSel and TETSel strains, respectively, to determine their resistance development, cross-resistance and mutation frequencies of the P. xylostella ryanodine receptor (Px RyR). In addition, the tetraniliprole resistance and the mutation frequencies of the Px RyR from 7 field populations were evaluated. Continuous selection over 30 generations resulted in resistance ratios (RRs) of 7,073.2-fold and 6,971.0-fold for the CHLSel and TETSel strains, respectively, and thousandfold increases in cross-resistance to unexposed diamides, e.g. cyantraniliprole and flubendiamide, were observed. For the field populations, three out of seven populations have developed more than thousandfold resistance to tetraniliprole. Among the three investigated target site mutations in Px RyR, only I4790K was detected in both laboratory-selected strains. However, 2 mutations, I4790K and G4946E, were detected in field populations. A positive correlation between RRs and K allele frequencies was observed in the laboratory-selected/relaxed strains and field populations of P. xylostella. These results suggest a possible link between the development of anthranilic diamide resistance and the frequency of the Px RyR I4790K mutation, which can be used to develop effective strategies for diamide resistance management in P. xylostella. Background Inhibitory control function and proinflammatory cytokines play a role in the pathomechanisms underlying major affective disorders and suicidal behavior. However, the distinct or interactive effects of major affective disorders and suicidal symptom severity on inhibitory control function and proinflammatory cytokines remain unclear. Methods This study included 287 patients with bipolar disorder, 344 with major depressive disorder, and 169 healthy controls. We categorized the participants into 3 groups based on Montgomery–Åsberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS) item 10 (suicidal symptoms) score: 0, 2 or 3, and ≥4. The participants completed the go/no-go task and the measurements for C-reactive protein (CRP) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) levels. Results Errors in the go/no-go task were associated with suicidality (P  = .040), regardless of the severity of suicidal symptoms and diagnosis. An elevated CRP level was especially associated with a Montgomery–Åsberg Depression Rating Scale item 10 score ≥4 (P  = .001). An increased TNF-α level could distinguish bipolar disorder from major depressive disorder (P  < .001). Discussion Our study indicated the distinct effects of major affective disorder diagnosis and suicide symptom severity on inhibitory control function and CRP and TNF-α levels. Importantly, individuals with the poorest inhibitory control function and highest CRP levels had more severe suicidal symptoms. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
