Abstract

We report optical pumping and x-ray absorption spectroscopy experiments at the Pohang Accelerator Laboratory free electron laser that probes the electron dynamics of a graphene monolayer adsorbed on copper in the femtosecond regime. By analyzing the results with ab initio theory we infer that the excitation of graphene is dominated by indirect excitation from hot electron-hole pairs created in the copper by the optical laser pulse. However, once the excitation is created in graphene, its decay follows a similar path as in many previous studies of graphene adsorbed on semiconductors, i.e., rapid excitation of strongly coupled optical phonons and eventual thermalization. It is likely that the lifetime of the hot electron-hole pairs in copper governs the lifetime of the electronic excitation of the graphene.

Abstract

Today, we are living through a pivotal moment when the semiconductor industry is moving towards 3D-integration including the close integration of logic and memory, the tighter integration of mixed-signal circuits, spintronic, embedded memories, sensors, communications, and improved power management. It is expected that 3D monolithic and heterogeneous integration will result in a new, truly multi-functional platform that drives continued system progress in the coming decades. Thus, over the next 40 years, the semiconductor industry will require significant innovation. At the heart of that is the need for significant contributions from the materials ecosystem to drive materials from the laboratory to the factory. For this perspective article, a selected group of distinguished SRC Scholars have been invited to present their research in the context of the potential impact that their work will drive for the future of microelectronics. Abstract

Cancer cell extravasation, a key step in the metastatic cascade, involves cancer cell arrest on the endothelium, transendothelial migration (TEM), followed by the invasion into the subendothelial extracellular matrix (ECM) of distant tissues. While cancer research has mostly focused on the biomechanical interactions between tumor cells (TCs) and ECM, particularly at the primary tumor site, very little is known about the mechanical properties of endothelial cells and the subendothelial ECM and how they contribute to the extravasation process. Here, an integrated experimental and theoretical framework is developed to investigate the mechanical crosstalk between TCs, endothelium and subendothelial ECM during in vitro cancer cell extravasation. It is found that cancer cell actin-rich protrusions generate complex push-pull forces to initiate and drive TEM, while transmigration success also relies on the forces generated by the endothelium. Consequently, mechanical properties of the subendothelial ECM and endothelial actomyosin contractility that mediate the endothelial forces also impact the endothelium's resistance to cancer cell transmigration. These results indicate that mechanical features of distant tissues, including force interactions between the endothelium and the subendothelial ECM, are key determinants of metastatic organotropism.

Abstract

Objectives: Fungal tissue invasion in the setting of sinonasal malignancy has been rarely described in the literature. Only a handful of studies have discussed cases of suspected chronic and acute IFS (CIFS and AIFS, respectively), having an underlying undifferentiated sinonasal carcinoma, sinonasal teratocarcinosarcoma, and NK/T-cell lymphoma. Methods: Here, we describe 3 cases of carcinoma mimicking IFS from a single institution. Results: Each of our patients presented with sinonasal complaints as an outpatient in the setting of immunosuppression. Intranasal biopsies consistently were predominated by necrotic debris, with and without fungal elements, ultimately leading to a delay of oncologic care. The final pathologies included NK/T-cell lymphoma and SNEC. All patients were followed by radiation and chemotherapy, with 1 case of mortality. Conclusions: We aim to emphasize the importance of obtaining viable tissue as pathology specimens as the presence of necrosis with fungal elements may limit the diagnosis and ultimately delay the care of an underlying sinonasal carcinoma. 219. Reading Proficiency and Comparability of Mathematics and Science Scores for Students from English and Non-English Backgrounds: An International Perspective

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to examine the comparability of mathematics and science scores for students from English language backgrounds (ELB) and non-English language backgrounds (NELB). We examine the relationship between English reading proficiency and performance on mathematics and science assessments in Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and the United States. The findings indicate a strong relationship with reading proficiency accounting for up to 43% of the variance in mathematics and up to 79% in science. In all comparisons, ELB students either outperformed NELB students or performed at the same level. However, when statistical adjustments were made for reading proficiency, in both mathematics and science, the score gap between the groups became statistically non-significant in three out of the four countries. These findings point to differences in score meaning in mathematics and science assessments and limitations in comparing performances of ELB and NELB.

223. “Abrazame Que Ayuda” (Hug Me, It Helps): Social Support and the Effect of Perceived Discrimination on Depression among US- and Foreign-Born Latinxs in the USA

Abstract

Background: Higher level of social support is known to mitigate the effect of ethnic discrimination on depression symptoms, yet little is known as to which type of social support may be most effective for ameliorating the negative health effects of perceived ethnic discrimination among Latinxs varying in nativity status. The purpose of this study is to examine the association between perceived ethnic discrimination and depression among US- and foreign-born Latinxs, and to identify specific types of social support that may buffer the aforementioned association in this population. Methods: Data from 1340 Latinx respondents (70% US-born; 30% foreign-born) collected from the Texas City Stress and Health Study (TCSHS) was used in this study. The primary outcome was depression, and it was measured using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale Revised (CESD-R). Results: Findings showed that higher perceived ethnic discrimination were associated with higher depressive symptoms for both foreign-born and US-born Latinxs, with higher levels of social support, specifically positive interaction support, being associated with lower depressive symptoms for both groups. Importantly, results also showed that regardless of nativity status, higher levels of affectionate support mitigated the adverse association between ethnic discrimination and depressive symptoms. Conclusion: This study provides evidence that higher levels of positive interactions and affective support may be significant factors in helping Latinxs cope with ethnic discrimination. This information is essential to inform the development of interventions aimed at building resilience in the face of discrimination among the largest and fastest growing ethnic group in the USA

224. Evidence for thyroid hormone regulation of amygdala-dependent fear-relevant memory and plasticity

Abstract

The amygdala is an established site for fear memory formation, and clinical studies suggest involvement of hormone signaling cascades in development of trauma-related disorders. While an association of thyroid hormone (TH) status and mood disorders is established, the related brain-based mechanisms and the role of TH in anxiety disorders are unknown. Here we examine the role that TH receptor (TR, a nuclear transcriptional repressorwhen unbound and a transcriptional activatorwhen bound to TH) may have in mediating the initial formation of fear memories in the amygdala. We identified mRNA levels of TR and other TH pathway regulatory genes, including thyrotropin-releasing hormone (Trh), transthyretin (Ttr), thyrotropin-releasing hormone receptor (Trhr), type 2 iodothyronine deiodinase (Dio2), mediator complex subunit 12 (Med12/Trap230) and retinoid X receptor gamma (Rxrg) to be altered in the amygdala following Pavlovian fear conditioning. Using TH agonist and antagonist infusion into the amygdala, we demonstrated that this pathway is both necessary and sufficient for fear memory consolidation. Inhibition of TH signaling with the TR antagonist 1-850 decreased fear memory consolidation; while activation of TR with T3 (triiodothyronine) resulted in increased memory formation. Using a systemic hypothyroid mouse model, we found that intra-amygdala infusions of T3 were sufficient to rescue deficits in fear memory. Finally, we demonstrated that T3 was sufficient to activate TR-specific gene pathways in the amygdala. These findings on the role of activity-dependent TR modulation support a model in which local TH is a critical regulator of fear memory-related plasticity in the amygdala.

Abstract

Background: In the most severe stage of endometriosis, Stage IV, intestinal involvement is common. The true prevalence of endometriotic disease of the appendix in this population is not well described. A macroscopically normal looking appendix may harbour endometriosis. Aims: Our study aims to assess the role of routinely performing appendicectomy in Stage IV endometriosis surgery, and the histopathological prevalence of true appendiceal endometriosis in this population. Methods: This is a retrospective study of women undergoing surgery for Stage IV endometriosis between 2018 to 2022 in a tertiary public hospital in New South Wales, Australia. Patient demographics, age and post‐operative complications were retrospectively retrieved from hospital medical records. Inclusion criteria were women with Stage IV endometriosis who underwent routine appendicectomy as part of their endometriosis surgery. Exclusion criteria were women who did not have Stage IV endometriosis, those who had cancer surgery or emergency surgery for endometriosis. The primary outcome of this study was to determine the incidence of appendiceal endometriosis. Secondary outcomes included post‐operative complications and length of stay. Results: Sixty‐seven patients were included. The mean age was 36 years. All patients also underwent bowel resection for colorectal endometriosis. There were 35.8% who had confirmed appendiceal endometriosis on histopathology. Post‐operative complications included port site infections, colitis, urinary tract infection and ureteric injury. There were no complications related to appendicectomy. Mean length of stay was 4.4 days. Conclusion: Laparoscopic appendicectomy can be safely performed at time of laparoscopic surgical excision of Stage IV endometriosis and should be routinely considered in a subset of Stage IV endometriosis patients with colorectal involvement undergoing surgery. Abstract

Approximately 1%–2% of patients with colorectal cancer (CRC) develop para‐aortic lymph node (PALN) metastases, which are typically considered markers of systemic disease, and are associated with a poor prognosis. The utility of PALN dissection (PALND) in patients with CRC is of ongoing debate and only small‐scale retrospective studies have been published on this topic to date. This systematic review aimed to determine the utility of resecting PALN metastases with the primary outcome measure being the difference in survival outcomes following either surgical resection or non‐resection of these metastases. A comprehensive systematic search was undertaken to identify all English‐language papers on PALND in the PubMed, Medline, and Google Scholar databases. The search results identified a total of 12 eligible studies for analysis. All studies were either retrospective cohort studies or case series. In this systematic review, PALND was found to be associated with a survival benefit when compared to non‐resection. Metachronous PALND was found to be associated with better overall survival as compared to synchronous PALND, and the number of PALN metastases (2 or fewer) and a pre‐operative carcinoembryonic antigen level of <5 was found to be associated with a better prognosis. No PALND‐specific complications were identified in this review. A large‐scale prospective study needs to be conducted to definitively determine the utility of PALND. For the present, PALND should be considered within a multidisciplinary approach for patients with CRC, in conjunction with already established treatment regimens. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
