219. The association between the -2518A/G polymorphism in the MCP-1 gene and the risk of pulmonary tuberculosis in Sichuan Chinese population.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: The -2518A/G polymorphism in the Monocyte chemotactic protein-1 (MCP-1) gene may play an important role in regulating immunological reactions and may be associated with pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB). However, the relationship for the populations in Sichuan province of China remains unknown. The objective of the current study was to analysis that association. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 386 PTB patients and 398 controls were recruited. The genotypes were identified using PCR-RFLP and sequencing method. Data was analyzed using SPSS 11.0 software. RESULTS: Significant association was found between the polymorphism and the risk of PTB: AG vs. AA: OR = 1.37, 95% CI = 0.98-1.92 and p = 0.06; GG vs. AA: OR = 1.69, 95% CI = 1.14-2.50 and p = 0.009; AG+GG vs. AA: OR = 1.47, 95% CI = 1.07-2.01 and p = 0.02; G vs. A: OR = 1.31, 95% CI = 1.08-1.60 and p = 0.007. CONCLUSIONS: The current study suggested that the 2518A/G polymorphism in the MCP1 gene was associated with risk of PTB in population of Sichuan province in China. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Aluminium (Al) toxicity is the major factor-limiting crop productivity in acid soils. In the present study, physiological and transcriptional responses of broad bean leaves to Al stress were investigated. Malondialdehyde (MDA) content, H2O2 content and protein carbonyls (PC) level in leaves were increased after 100 μm AlCl3 stress treatment, whereas the total protein content was decreased, compared with the plants without Al treatment. Stomatal closure in leaves of broad bean was increased after Al stress, suggesting that the photosynthesis rate might be affected by Al stress. The relative citrate secretion in leaves was decreased after Al treatment for 24 h according to the 13C-NMR analysis, indicating that citrate in leaves might be transported to the root to chelate Al3+. To investigate the molecular mechanisms of Al toxicity in leaves of broad bean, a suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH) library was constructed to identify up-regulated genes: cDNA from leaves subjected to 12, 24, 48 and 72 h of 50 and 100 μm AlCl3 stress were used as testers and cDNA from leaves subjected to 0 μm AlCl3 treatment for the same lengths of time as above were used as a driver. The SSH analysis identified 156 non-redundant putative Al stress-responsive expressed sequence tags (ESTs) out of 960 clones. The ESTs were categorized into ten functional groups, which were involved in metabolism (0·21), protein synthesis and protein fate (0·10), photosynthesis and chloroplast structure (0·09), transporter (0·08), cell wall related (0·06), signal transduction (0·05), defence, stress and cell death (0·05), energy (0·03), transcription factor (0·03) and unknown proteins (0·30). The effect of Al treatment on expression of 15 selected genes was investigated by reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT–PCR), confirming induction by Al stress. The results indicated that genes involved in organic acid metabolism, transport, photosynthesis and chloroplast structure, defence, stress and cell death might play important roles under Al stress. Abstract

Concentrations of ten mineral elements (P, S, K, Ca, Mn, Fe, Cu, Zn, Rb, and Sr) were determined in 27 genotypes of Chinese dwarf cherry using total reflection X-ray fluorescence spectrometry. The results indicated that Chinese dwarf cherry was a rich source of mineral elements, especially Ca, Fe, and Zn, with the highest concentrations being 524,24.2, and 4.86 mg kg-1 FW in genotypes C-12-5-7, A-9-1-3, and E-20-2-2, respectively. Among the 27 Chinese dwarf cherry genotypes examined, the coefficients of variation were > 30% for Rb, Fe, Ca, Sr, Zn, Mn concentrations, and 25 - 30% for P, S, K, and Cu concentrations. Principal components analysis was applied to the data matrix to evaluate the analytical results. Three principal components (PC1 - PC3) accounted for 75.6% of the total variance. Abstract

A study is made of the ultra-short laser pulse irradiation of Ar cluster targets. Experiments have been performed with large cluster sizes and using very high laser contrasts, which have allowed clear and unambiguous observation of exotic inner-shell transitions in near-neutral Ar ions. The interaction of the main laser pulse with the unperturbed target is a necessary requirement for observing these lines. Our measurements are supported by kinetics calculations in which a very detailed atomic model is used. The calculations predict all of the spectral features found experimentally, and support the notion that the X-ray emission arises from many ion stages of the Ar plasma, from near-neutral through He-like ions, and from a range of plasma temperatures and densities. Differences between X-ray argon clusters excited at the laser-cluster and laser-droplet interactions have been analyzed. X-ray spectral methods have been proposed to determine the parameters of the plasma formed at the early stages of its evolution. It has been shown that the spectra of hollow ions are the most informative in the first moments of the heating of a cluster, whereas the diagnostics of the late stages can be performed using the conventional lines of multicharged ions. 243. Making Fired Bricks with Spent Equilibrium Catalyst: A Technical Feasibility Study.

Abstract

The fluid catalytic cracking in an oil refinery uses a catalyst, such as silica-alumina zeolite, to convert heavy hydrocarbons to light hydrocarbons. A small fraction of the catalyst is continually replaced with fresh catalyst to maintain activity. In North America, more than 400 tons of this spent alumino-silicate equilibrium catalyst (e-cat) generated daily are disposed of, primarily in landfills (municipal and on-site facilities). Depending on geographic location and freight charges, the disposal cost can range from US$50 to US$250 per ton. In this study, researchers at the Illinois State Geological Survey chemically characterized the e-cat samples from two sources and compared the results with that of the conventional raw materials for fired bricks making. Also, a lab trial was conducted to make full-size bricks for firing evaluation. The results were optimistic that the fired bricks produced with 20wt% of e-cat show good physical appearance in color and texture, as well as good engineering properties. 244. Enhancement and Spatial Characteristics of Kα X-ray Emission from High-contrast Relativistic fs Laser Plasmas.

Abstract

We studied the hard X-ray emission and the Kα X-ray conversion efficiency (ηK) produced by 70 fs, 400 nm high-contrast femtosecond laser pulse focused on Cu solid target. At an intensity I = 2 × 1018 W · cm−2, the Cu ηK can reach 1 × 10−4. Compared with the Cu ηK obtained by using a 800-nm low-contrast laser pulse, the second harmonic exhibits a higher X-ray flux by a factor of 2. We show that the use of high-contrast laser pulses may be an effective method to optimize the Kα X-ray emission via the vacuum heating mechanism. In addition, the laser focusing was varied widely to give a range of intensities from 1015–1018 W · cm−2 by target offset from best laser focus. Two individual emission peaks are obtained, one is at best focal spot and the other is at larger target offset corresponding to ∼1015 W · cm−2. Abstract

This chapter summarizes recent findings regarding the functional organization of primary somatosensory cortex (SI) in primates when viewed through `windows΄ on the brain with optical imaging methodologies. These views have confirmed previous knowledge regarding topographic organization in SI. They have also revealed the presence of functional domains for the processing of different sensory tactile modalities (pressure, flutter, and vibration domains). Surprisingly, the representation of these tactile modalities is quite distinct in organization from that of visual modalities (form, color, and depth) in visual cortex. Rather, tactile modality maps appear similar to visual orientation maps in primate visual cortex. Implications of these findings for the relationship of cortical organization to the sensory scene are discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
